Suggested December 2023 4 Free Tools To Remove Duplicate Files And Photos

Looking for some utilities to find duplicate files and photos on your computer quickly and easily? I recently organized all the data that my father had stored on multiple computers and multiple external hard drives into one safe backed up location, but found that there were duplicates of pretty much everything. There was no way I was going to manually try to figure out what was the same and what was a duplicate, so I went ahead and tried out a couple of duplicate finder programs.

In this article, I’ll mention the ones I used and give a short overview of how the program works, its effectiveness and any issues that I ran into. It’s worth noting that you should never completely trust the results of a duplicate finder program because there are always scenarios that can confuse the search algorithms and give you false positives. So always double-check once before you delete anything.

Also, it goes without saying that you should definitely make a backup of all data before you start this process just in case. Once you are certain the correct data was deleted, then you can get rid of the original backup.

NirSoft SearchMyFiles

If you’re looking for some of the most useful software tools for Windows, then NirSoft should be the first place you look. One of their tools is SearchMyFiles, which is basically a super search engine for your local files and folders. It has a ton of filters that let you search by wildcard, by file dates, by file content, by file size, by file attributes, etc.

Next, you choose the base folder where you want the search to start from. As you can see, everything else is self-explanatory. If you’re only looking for duplicate files and want to find all of them, then don’t change any of the filters or settings. By default, they are configured to search everything. If you want to restrict the types of files scanned, then you should use the filters.

This method of searching is good, but it’s not perfect for photos because there may be times when you have the same photo with two different names or the same photos in different sizes. I also ran into issues with documents that had the same contents and even the same name, but were slightly different in size and therefore didn’t show up in the results. It would have been nice if they also showed files with the same name even if they have different sizes.

It really depends on what your goal is, but I’ll mention other programs that search differently in case this is not what you’re looking for.

Duplicate Cleaner

Using these criteria, you can perform more complicated searches for duplicates like searching for all files with the same name, but not necessarily the same size and searching for all files with the same content, but not necessarily with the same name.

You may have also noticed the Image Mode and Audio Mode under Search Criteria and both work very well, but not all of the features are free. The image mode option is the best, but it requires you to purchase the Pro version for $30. I would highly recommend the Pro for anyone who really has to deal with a ton of duplicates including photos and audio files because I used it and it saved me a lot of time the free version could not accomplish.

With image mode, you can find similar images even if they have a different resolution or have been rotated or flipped. Audio mode will let you search for duplicate songs by metadata for free, but if you want to compare the actual audio data, you’ll have to purchase the Pro version.

Fast Duplicate File Finder

If you’re looking for just finding exact duplicates, then Fast Duplicate File Finder is a good choice. The free version will let you find unlimited exact duplicates, but only 10 groups of similar files. The similar files functionality is quite useful since it can help you find documents like Word docs that are exactly the same in terms of content, but for some reason have different sizes and other slight variations.

However, that functionality along with a few other features like filters and the ability to delete the duplicate files will set you back $40, which is a way too high for a program that just finds duplicates. However, the free version does a good job of finding exact duplicates.

Again, this program would not show me the two Word files that had the same name and had the same contents because they were slightly different in size. When I chose the Similar Files option and set the Similarity value to 75%, then it showed them correctly.  However, it will only show you 10 groups of similar files in the free version, which is kind of annoying.

Overall it is a good program, but only useful for exact duplicates. Works best with multiple copies of pictures, videos or audio files and not so well with documents.

Anti-Twin

In Anti-Twin, you have to choose from either one or two “base” folders and then from a couple of options. If you have two folders under a main folder, then you can simply choose the top-level folder as a base folder and then check the Include subfolders box. You would then select Only files in different subfolders for comparison.

If you have two folders that are in completely different locations, choose one base folder then check the 2nd folder box and choose the second folder as another base folder. Then you would check the Only files in different basic folders box. You can also select Compare all files to compare everything in the base folders and/or subfolders to each other.

For Comparison methods, you can either Compare names or Compare content or compare both. Note that if you check both boxes, the comparison will before an AND operation meaning that both criteria will need to match in order for it to show as duplicate.

As you can see, I had two files with the same name, but different sizes due to the resolution. When you reduce the match percentage, you’ll see a new checkbox called inc. 100%, which basically will show you the pictures that are exact duplicates also. Otherwise, you’ll only see the ones that are similar, but not exact matches.

How To Remove Duplicate Files In Google Drive With Duplicate Cleaner

Google Drive irrefutably is one of the most widely known cloud storage services. It allows the users to conveniently upload and store their documents, images, videos, archives, and other files directly on the cloud. That is not all, integration of Google’s web-based office suite has made it much easier to create, edit, and share documents across innumerable devices and networks. But have you ever thought how many duplicate files have been cluttering your space on Google Drive?

Earlier, finding duplicates on a Cloud-based service like Google Drive was tough. Also, Google Drive does not incorporate any options to search for duplicate files. In such circumstances, users are left with just 2 options – one download all the files and scan them with a duplicate finder, second manual comparison. But, not anymore, this guide will cover how to find and remove duplicate files in Google Drive.

How to remove duplicate files in Google Drive

Also, how Google deals with the problem of duplicate files. By removing duplicates, you can free up a lot of space and at the same time get your files more organized.

How does Google handle duplicate files?

Google Drive does have few measures to prevent unnecessary duplicate files from showing on your Drive space. Earlier, if you tried to upload a duplicate file to your Google Drive, the file would be uploaded and got extensions to its original name like this File (1), File (2), File (3) and so on. This created a lot of confusion and made it very tough to organize the files.

Use Duplicate Cleaner

Review: Alldup Is A Free And Flexible Way Get Rid Of Duplicate Files

Duplicate file finders can strip your hard drive of unnecessary clutter. In recent months, I’ve tested several duplicate file finders, including the free Auslogics Duplicate File Finder, the $30 Ashisoft Duplicate Finder, and the $40 Webminds Easy Duplicate File Finder. The free AllDup is yet another way to get this task done, and according to its website, is a flexible and quick to do so.

Setting up an AllDup scan is relatively simple, with many options and filters to choose from.

According to my tests, AllDup 3.4.18 truly is quick: It scanned my entire hard drive in well under a minute, finding 316GB of duplicates of all kinds. Althhough my current hard drive only contains around 50GB of data, the scan time was still impressive. Naturally, scan results depend on your chosen scan settings, and there are many to choose from with AllDup. The product’s interface includes buttons such as File Filter, Search Criteria, Search Options, and Source Folders, each offering a different set of scan preferences you can control.

Scan settings for AllDup are very flexible: You can scan for duplicates by name, extension, size, content, creation date, and other criteria, filter the scan by file type, search inside archive files such as ZIP and RAR, and exclude files of a certain size, to only name a few. Having included so many different settings to play with, AllDup takes into account the fact that you might not want to set all these very often. The Profiles button lets you create and save different scan profiles, so you can easily switch between your different scan settings.

Before we get into the most interesting part, the scan results, there are several more features worth mentioning. You can set AllDup to log any and all activities, in case you want to go back and remember what you found, what actions you took, and what errors the program returned. You can also set up an external comparison program to compare the contents of files, or set Microsoft Word to compare the contents of DOC, DOCX, RTF, and TXT files. It’s also possible to add AllDup to the Windows Explorer context menu, for a quick duplicate scan inside a specific folder.

AllDup presents scan results as usual, but further options hide in a toolbar clutter.

Everything about AllDup seems promising, including the clear yet somewhat dispersed interface, but things take a surprising twist when the duplicate scan is complete. My eyes widened in surprise at the sight of the scan results window. The results list itself looks ordinary enough, with previews available for many of the file types, but the incredible clutter of icon buttons placed in no fewer than six different toolbars  is quite overwhelming.

Upon hovering on each button, a tooltip appears helping you make sense of what each icon means, but the sheer number of them (56, according to my count, with some containing dropdown menus with yet further options) makes them almost impossible to use efficiently. Luckily, all options appear in the menus as well, and while those are also quite cluttered, it’s still easier to find your way when dealing with actual words.

Visuals aside, AllDup certainly finds duplicates of any kind, presenting them in the traditional way of file groups. Each file group can be expanded and collapsed, and by using the options, it’s possible to flexibly select only certain files such as all files from a certain folder, oldest or newest versions of files, biggest or smallest versions, etc. Even when performing these actions through the menus, you’re going to have to use some logical thinking when dealing with options such as “select all files except the smallest file.” To make things a bit more confusing, duplicate files in each group don’t always appear in the same order, so if you choose all files from a certain folder as duplicates, don’t expect them to appear in the same position in all file groups.

When you’ve managed to select all duplicate files, you can choose to delete them, move them to the recycle bin, copy or move them to a different folder, or rename them. Here, too, AllDup offers impressive flexibility, letting you create customized subfolders, keep the folder structure when moving or copying files, delete empty folders after moving files from them, and more. Dispose of duplicate files as you see fit.

How To Sort And Remove Junk Files From Your Android Phone

Android phones of this age have a generous amount of inbuilt storage but if you’ve come to own your device for an extended period of time, you might have ended up accumulating a pile of junk on it. These files aren’t dumped inside a particular folder so that you can easily delete them but are the result of installing and uninstalling a ton of apps, browsing through the web, and downloading files.

In order to speed up your sluggish phone and free up its storage, you’ll need to find a service that actually does the job, unlike the thousands of cleaner apps that are present on Google Play. Enter – SD Maid. The app, unlike its popular counterparts, can find and delete leftover files from uninstalled apps, duplicate files, superfluous files from the system, and optimize databases.

How to sort and remove junk files from your Android phone

In this guide, we’ll help you search and find junk files on your Android device and remove them so that you may retain some additional storage and also speed up your phone at the same time.

Step 1: Download and install the SD Maid and SD Maid Pro – Unlocker apps from Google Play. The latter of the two is a paid app but for the price you pay, you get all additional features present on SD Maid.

Step 2: Open the SD Maid Pro – Unlocker app and tap on Launch SD Maid at the bottom.

This will activate all the Pro features of SD Maid and also open the SD Maid app on your screen.

Step 3: Tap on the Scan button at the bottom to start checking for redundant files.

SD Maid will now check for files from uninstalled apps, duplicate files, databases and expendable files.

Step 4: After the scan is complete, tap on the Run now button. This button will also display the size of the junk files that will be cleared up during the process.

Step 5: Confirm the deletion process by tapping Run.

SD Maid will now start deleting the detected junk files from your internal storage.

Finding and deleting duplicate files

On many occasions, the space on your phone gets crowded simply because of your media files and how often you share them. Sometimes, your phone and the apps you use create a duplicate of files that you’re sharing to others and sometimes, you yourself might have created one for a particular use.

In addition to removing junk files, you can also sort through other folders in your storage and find duplicates through SD Maid. SD Maid will only display the fiches that are exactly the same by comparing sizes and checksums without keeping in mind the date of creation and names of files. In order to find and delete duplicate files on SD Maid follow these steps:

Step 1: Tap on the hamburger menu at the top left and select Duplicates.

Step 2: Inside this page, tap on the circle arrow icon at the bottom right to start searching for duplicate files on your storage.

You will be shown a list of duplicate files that are present and can be cleared up. A bunch of duplicate files will be clubbed inside a single box displaying their file sizes, the location they’re saved to and their date of creation. This will help you sort which files you need to delete and which one you might need to keep.

Step 3: To manually delete a duplicate file, tap on any of the two or more files and hit Delete.

Step 4: If you wish to mass-delete your duplicate files, tap on the wand bubble at the bottom right, and let SD Maid select your duplicate based on location data. After that, tap on the trash icon at the bottom right and confirm by tapping Delete.

Scheduling automatic removal of junk files

When it comes to cleaning up your device, you might find yourself forgetting about it and often, delaying it for a later time, only to realize that the storage on your phone is full and needs to be cleared ASAP. SD Maid doesn’t only clear your storage when you’re using the app but you can also schedule it to do the clean up for you after regular intervals.

In order to set up automatic cleaning through SD Maid, follow the instructions:

Step 1: Tap the hamburger icon at the top left corner of the SD Maid home screen and select Scheduler.

Step 2: On the next page, tap on the toggle adjacent to the type of cleaner you want to enable for scheduling. You can choose from CorpseFinder, SystemCleaner, AppCleaner, Duplicates, and Databases. When you enable a particular section, a sub-section labeled Delete will pop up, tapping which will allow SD Maid to not only look out for unnecessary files but also give them the permission to delete them on its own.

For best results, you can enable all of SD Maid’s cleaners with the Delete option except for Duplicates since the latter might sometimes include important files that you wouldn’t want to remove.

Step 3: In this step, you will be setting a schedule that the SD maid app should follow to automatically search for junk files and remove them. You can do so by tapping the clock icon at the top right, setting the time for the cleaning process and then sliding through the bar below the clock for adjusting the schedule interval. You can wish to schedule SD Maid’s auto-cleaning between once in a day to once every 31 days.

Step 4: Tap Set to confirm scheduling the automatic removal of junk files.

Clearing system files

Step 1: Tap the hamburger icon at the top left corner of the SD Maid home screen and select SystemCleaner.

Step 2: Tap on the circle arrow icon at the bottom right to start searching for unnecessary files from your system.

Step 3: SD Maid will show you a list of cleanups that needs to be done. In order to clear up your storage by deleting unnecessary files from your system, tap on the trash icon at the bottom right and then tap Delete.

Step 4 (optional): You can filter the kind of system files you want to remove by tapping on the cogwheel icon at the top right and selecting the toggles adjacent to the options you want to enable for SystemCleaner.

Removing unnecessary application files

SD Maid removes files that are no more essential to running an application on your phone or can be easily retained. For instance, a music app will save album covers on your device as thumbnails and sometimes these images could occupy hundreds of megabytes on your storage. The same goes for other applications present in your phone.

SD Maid will help users regain back some memory by finding these unnecessary application files and removing them from their respective folders. You can do so by following the steps given below:

Step 1: Tap the hamburger menu at the top left and select AppCleaner.

Step 2: Inside this page, tap on the circle arrow icon at the bottom right to start searching for unnecessary files from your apps. Once the search is complete, you will be shown a list of apps that no longer require some files. The number of unnecessary files and the expected storage to be cleared will be displayed for each app in their respective boxes.

Step 3: Clear the unnecessary application files by tapping on the red trash icon at the bottom right and confirm by tapping Delete.

Analyzing folders by size

While SD Maid is primarily used for cleaning purposes, the app can also help you search and find which folder takes up most of your space. The inbuilt Storage analyzer tool can be used to show files and folders sorted by size and will continue to show up inside every folder you open through it.

Step 1: Tap the hamburger menu at the top left and select ‘Storage analyzer’.

Step 2: Tap on the circle arrow icon at the bottom right to start scanning your storage.

Step 3: Once the app has analyzed the space, tap on the main directory and subdirectories to check which of your files and folders are taking up the most space. For example, tapping on the WhatsApp folder showed us different folders with a graphical representation of how much space a particular folder takes up.

Step 4: If there’s a file or folder you want to delete, long-press on it, tap on the trash icon at the top right and confirm by tapping ‘Delete’.

Free Duplicate File Finder And Remover Software For Windows 11/10

As we keep using our Windows 11/10/8/7 PC, we tend to accumulate tons of files, images, and music. Chances are that tons of files result in duplication, especially when it comes to images and music. These files take a lot of space on the PC, and they are not easy to figure out the duplicate files and delete them manually.

Find and remove duplicate files

Duplicate files are a problem, as you do not know which one contains the most current content. In the case of collaborating, you may miss out on changes your co-worker did to the document if you open the wrong one. The worst-case scenario may be that you and your colleagues do not know about duplicates and you all work on different versions of the file.

Though there are junk cleaners such as the Comodo System Cleaner and CCleaner, they fail to recognize and fix the problem of duplicate files. Hence you need dedicated software that can search and remove and merge duplicate files.

Duplicate File Finder & Remover software

This article talks about three such free software which will help you find and delete or remove duplicate files in Windows 10/8/7. Below is the list of software that can help you remove duplicate files on the Windows 10 PC.  Some are completely free, while some have a PRO version that helps you do more, and find files more accurately.

1] DoubleKiller

As evident by the name, DoubleKiller finds and removes duplicate files from your computer. The software from Big Bang Enterprises is available in two editions. One is free to use, and you have to pay for the other edition. Of course, the paid edition does more work, but you can get good results with the help of freeware too.

The software uses methods including a hash comparison to compare files. This software is easy to use, and hence I placed it in the first position.

2] AllDup

It’s a powerful software, feature-rich, which can find, and delete duplicate files. You can of course copy, and move as well. One of the riches aspects of this tool is finding duplicate MP3 files with different ID3 Tags. It has many options and filters to compare MP3 files and images by their content, rather different metadata such as ID3 Tag.

Apart from this, another unique feature of this software is that it lets you compare two folders for duplicate files. You can choose to compare with one source folder or files within the folder or between different source folders. Later is very useful if you have a habit of maintaining copies at multiple places. Download it from here.

3] dupeGuru

Known popularly as the dupeGuru Music Edition, the latest version of dupeGuru adds music files in comparison to the feature set.

In addition to removing duplicate files with similar filenames, this freeware also has the capability to search within files – especially MP3s – to know if they are similar even in case the filenames are different. It presents you with the search results allowing you to select which one to keep and which one to discard.

4] Duplicate Cleaner Free from Digital Volcano

When you download this software, look for “A basic, light version of Duplicate Cleaner, for Non-Commercial use only”. The download page offers you a pro version up front, but for home usage, the light version is more than enough.

The pro version tells you if they are alike and also can do byte-to-byte+algorythms. It also offers image mode and audio mode. The audio mode is very interesting. It can find files based on ID3 tags, but they are available only in Pro mode. Download it from here.

5] WinMerge

6] Auslogics Duplicate File Finder

This freeware from the stables of Auslogics will help you to find and remove useless duplicate files, stored on your Windows PC. It’s another brilliantly designed software that can find duplicate images, audio files, video, archives, and applications on your Windows 10 PC.  There are features which I absolutely loved about it. First, it makes sure to backup everything you plan to delete, and second, it ignores a set of system files and folders by default.

That said, once you search, the results are displayed in form of groups with highlighted colors. This makes it easy to understand. The results can be filtered by date and type, and you can then choose to select only duplicate files by modified date, select only one group, and so on.

Features:

Finds identical pictures, documents, and any other files

Compares files not only by names but by their content

Can significantly increase free space on your disk

Helps you to organize your media collections

Reduces the time needed to defragment your hard drive

A small warning here. During the installation, the software asks you to download its in-house products. Make sure to uncheck them from the installation. Download it from here.

7] Duplicate File Eraser

Duplicate File Eraser offers simple, but minute details you can take over to find duplicate files. You can search directories, subdirectories, hidden files as well as system files (ignore though) for duplicate files. You can choose between CRC32, MD5, SHA1 file comparison algorithms. If you want to find files based on size, type name, etc., it is possible. It can also search hidden files, but make sure to do it for folders that you own, and not use the system folders.

8] Dupscout Duplicate Finder

9] NoClone

NoClone is another free software that uses a real-time byte-to-byte comparison to detect duplicate files regardless of their file names. You can limit the search to specific file types (images, programs, etc.) as well as by size, date, and location.

This software uses the real-time byte-to-byte comparison to find the exact content and not related ones. The best part is that it supports a plethora of file extensions including s docx, xlsx, pptx; audio files, video files, Outlook emails, and more. To find similar images, it uses a fuzzy search algorithm. The free version restricts itself to 300,000 files in a single session. The free edition of NoClone restricts itself to 300,000 files in a single session.

Other similar freeware in this category are:

If you need to find duplicate images, try Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder.

Warning: When deleting files from your PC, be very careful. If you send up searching everywhere on PC, chances are you may delete system images, and it may cause the system to become unstable. So, be very very careful.

This list of freeware to remove duplicate files is based on my own experience. If you have any favorites, please let us know.
