Suggested December 2023 5 Things We Want To See From Gaming In 2023

Oliver Cragg / Android Authority

Despite promising beginnings, in many ways 2023 didn’t deliver on much of its gaming potential. Next-gen hardware is still impossible to find, highly-anticipated games were delayed even further into the future, and many of the big-name titles that did launch were disappointing or buggy (or both). But we have high hopes for next year. It could be the year where we finally break out of the pandemic lull and into a bright new next-gen future. With that in mind, here’s a short wishlist of what we want to see from gaming in 2023.

Ubiquitous access to next-gen hardware

Oliver Cragg / Android Authority

Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room: hardware. At this point, it’s been well over a year since the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles launched, and they’re still constantly out of stock at virtually every retailer around the globe. For PC gamers, the same goes for graphics cards, with entire shipments consumed by crypto miners and speculators.

Availability should improve by mid-2023, at least for next-gen consoles. And it’s about time.

No matter how good upcoming games look to be in 2023 (and there are some real bangers), without new hardware it’s going to be difficult to push into the next generation of games. Obviously, the global chip shortages affect all companies, not just Microsoft and Sony, but considering how long these consoles were in development (and how long they’ve been out at this point), we should start seeing some improvements.

We’re hoping that things are looking better by mid-2023, at least on the console front. PC hardware will likely take longer, but a recent report indicates that by late 2023 NVIDIA expects to increase production yields. Legislation outlawing the bots scalpers use to buy consoles and graphics cards as soon as they’re in stock may also make some headway in 2023, at least in the UK.

Cloud gaming going mainstream

Cloud gaming is here! And has been here for a few years now.

But for whatever reason, it hasn’t quite had its breakout moment. Google Stadia made waves when it was announced (for better or worse), but has failed to build any momentum two years later. Xbox Cloud Gaming, included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, works pretty well but is still in beta and tied to an expensive subscription.

But 2023 did provide a few blueprints for mass market success in the cloud gaming space. The first relates to the point above, and that’s the lack of availability of hardware. Earlier this year, GeForce Now launched a new “RTX 3080” plan that offers ray tracing and up to 1440p 120fps streaming. That kind of PC performance will cost you an arm and a leg in today’s hyperinflated graphics card market.

Revamped Sony PlayStation subscriptions

Oliver Cragg / Android Authority

One thing that became abundantly clear in 2023 is that Microsoft is on to something with Xbox Game Pass. The massive library of games that includes all first-party releases and several others on day one is just too good to pass up. The value is even better with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which includes Xbox Live Gold, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Cloud Gaming as well.

Sony, on the other hand, is woefully behind the curve. There are two pseudo Game Pass libraries, the first included in PlayStation Plus and called PS Plus Collection. However, that one is just for PlayStation 5 owners and it only includes a handful of games. The other library, included with PlayStation Now, is much larger, but doesn’t include very many new games.

If you want both, you have to subscribe separately. There’s no bundle for both services, and cloud capabilities (included with PS Now) are limited to PlayStation consoles and PCs. No mobile options here (even though Sony also makes smartphones).

More handheld gaming devices

2023 was (almost) the year of the Steam Deck, and despite a delay to early 2023, it still has a lot of potential to bring PC gaming to a portable form factor. The continued success of the Nintendo Switch, which at this point is terribly underpowered compared to its competitors even after its OLED revamp, proves that there is a market for this, and we’d like to see it exploited.

Sure, there are other handheld PC devices, but they’re expensive and overly niche. With the power of Steam behind this new device, it could usher in a new wave of portables. Or it could wash out with the tide like its Steam Machines.

Microsoft Tablets: 5 Things We Want To See

The buzz around Windows tablets is at fever pitch now, on the eve of Microsoft’s mystery announcement in Los Angeles on Monday.

[Follow PCWorld’slive blog of the Microsoft event starting at 3:45 p.m. Pacific/6:45 p.m. Eastern Time.]

Several analysts theorized that, as an entertainment capital, L.A. could offer the backdrop for media content on any new tablet, including games, movies, or more.

[Read: Microsoft’s Mystery Tablet Event: Dawn of a New Microsoft?]

Rob Enderle, an analyst at Enderle Group told our sister publication Computerworld that Monday’s announcement could be an Xbox-like tablet subsidized with games that users would buy. “Xbox does do announcements in L.A., and they did just announce Xbox SmartGlass at the E3,” Enderle said.

Or, he added, the news could be merely a speculative product “designed to get the industry excited” with a focus on the tablet as a content-consumption device. “Content is where I think Microsoft is focused.”

Whichever path Microsoft announces Monday, one thing is for certain. Windows 8 tablets are coming, and they’re coming soon. The question is, what will they bring to the party that other comers haven’t? And will these tablets be able to mount a credible challenge to Apple’s iPad, or the mounds of Android 4.0 tablets?

Easy Content Acquisition

Apple and Amazon have excelled in making it dead simple for consumers to shop for their music, videos, and TV shows. Apple makes downloading content for local use as easy as it gets via iTunes, while Amazon makes it easy to download and stream from its cloud services (the Kindle Fire’s limited local storage makes it less viable to store your media locally).

Microsoft tablets have a huge opportunity to take a lead here, if the company can master the shopping experience and cover its bases across music, movies, and television.

Competitive Pricing

Even though we’ve heard the first tablets announced in early June at Computex, we haven’t seen anything firm about pricing. Microsoft tablets will need to come in at a price that’s, at the least, competitive with its Apple and Android competition. And ideally, at a price that undercuts the competition–just enough so that consumers take notice, and are enticed to consider something new.

Hitting this kind of pricing may be difficult, however, if reports that Microsoft’s charging manufacturers around $80 to $90 for the OEM version of Windows RT prove true. (Windows RT is the version of Windows 8 that’s designed for use on system-on-chip ARM processor-based tablets. These tablets are the ones that will most directly compete with Apple’s iPad and the variety of Android tablets.)

Better-Than-The-Rest Specs

[Related: A Microsoft Tablet–What Will it Look Like?]

Things like a minimum of 32GB of built-in storage, and a high pixel-density display (at minimum, a resolution of 1920 pixels by 1200 pixels, which is less than iPad’s 2048-pixel-by-1536-pixel resolution but superior to the existing baseline resolution of 1200 pixels by 800 pixels on a 10.1-inch display) feel de riguer.

And upping memory wouldn’t be a bad move, either; current tablets are locked at 1GB of memory, but 2GB could go a long way to smoothing the playback experience while using the tablet for other tasks, too.

7. Razer Thunderbolt 4 dock – 10 ports in 1

Most gaming setups nowadays tend to have multiple connections that can be difficult to manage. Moreover, it’s utterly challenging to find a dock that provides Thunderbolt 4 compatibility as well. Thankfully, with Razer’s Thunderbold 4 dock, all of these problems are fixed.

The Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock is certified to provide USB4 compliance, up to 40Gbps speeds, and even backward compatibility with Macs. Additionally, it’s pretty versatile, with four Thunderbolt 4 ports, three USB-A 3.2 Gen2x2 ports, and even an Ethernet port. Furthermore, if you’re using an Intel-based Mac, you can connect up to two 4K 60Hz displays with the dock. For M1-based Macs, you can connect one 4K 60Hz display.

This device also takes away simultaneous charging concerns, as you can now charge your Mac and other connected devices at the same time. Overall, this dock will provide you the versatility and cable management that your gaming setup has lacked all this while. With a single hub, your setup management will become much easier!
