Suggested December 2023 5 Ways To Crack Or Reset A Forgotten Windows Password

I recently helped a client recover his forgotten Windows password by using a couple of different tools. We eventually were able to reset the Administrator password to a blank password so that he could log into Windows. It was a fairly long and complicated process, but it worked. Unfortunately, there is no “one” way to reset a Windows password and depending on what version of Windows you are running, you might have to try different methods.

In the end, there is also no real guarantee that you’ll be able to crack the password. There are already so many articles written on how to recover or reset a password that I’m not going to reinvent the wheel, but instead will guide you to the best online resources that I have used to crack my Windows password.

Table of Contents

1. Ophcrack Live CD – My favorite ways to blank out or crack a Windows password is to use a Linux Live CD. These are special distributions of Linux that run directly from the CD (no installation required) and are specially designed for cracking Windows passwords. You can read the documentation to learn how to use it.

Simply burn the ISO and boot using the CD and the program will get right to work. It may not work, however, on very complicated passwords because it actually tries to determine the password rather than reset it. My buddy over at the How-To Geek site has a great tutorial on using Ophcrack.

Also, Ophcrack uses password tables to brute force crack the user passwords. You can download their free tables, but that won’t crack long passwords. For those cases, you can purchase larger password tables that range from $100 to $1000.

2. Offline NT Password and Registry Editor – This is a very small program, only 3MB in size that you can burn to a CD and boot to. It’ll auto-detect the Windows installation and the account names (that is if everything was installed in the default Windows directories). Using this program you can reset or blank out a Windows password, which means it doesn’t matter how long or complicated it is.

The program was recently updated after four years and now supports cracking passwords all the way up to Windows 8. It’s a bit hard to use, but chúng tôi has a great screenshot guide that walks you through the entire process, so be sure to check that out.

3. Login Recovery – Login Recovery is a web site that has a program that you can either download onto a floppy disk or a cd that you than use to boot up with. If the PC is connected to the Internet, it will automatically upload the encrypted data to their servers and begin the process of trying to recover the passwords. If you don’t have an Internet connection, it will generate a file, which you then manually upload to their site.

I have tried this site and it did not work for my password, which was 11 characters and mostly symbols, numbers, and letters. However, if the password is something simpler, they will probably be able to crack it.

5. Knoppix STD – G4TV has a good article on another Linux distro you can download and use to crack your Windows password. Follow the detailed instructions he gives and if the password is not too long or difficult, it should be able to crack it!

FAQs

To reset your Spotify password, you must have your account’s email address or username. That is all. You may have entered the wrong email address or username; however, you are not required to know your original password to get a password reset link via email.

You must know your email address to reset your password. Spotify recommends visiting their Password Reset page and entering possible email addresses you own, and “when you enter the right one, you’ll get the message that the password reset email was sent.” They also say that you can try logging in with other methods you may have used to sign up, including Facebook, Apple, Google, and a phone number. If you find a way to log in, you can see your email and username by going to your Account overview in your browser. If you signed up with Facebook, the email tied to your Spotify account will be the same one as the email you use to log into Facebook.

The best way to remember your password is by not having to! That sounds pretty contradictory, but many of us at Android Authority live and die by password managers. By entering your credentials and locking them away in a secure password manager, you can ensure you will always have access to your passwords in seconds. These are safe, easy-to-use “lockers” for your passwords. You can even have a password manager like LastPass generate a randomized password for you that will be very difficult for people to steal. Whenever you need to log into your account, your password manager will fill out the fields for you.

If you can’t remember your password, or its been changed by someone and you don’t have access, you will not be able to delete your Spotify account. Read our guide on how to get back a hacked account to learn more.

Adobe Launches New Software To Crack Down On Password Sharing

As Netflix continues to wage its war against password sharing, computer software company Adobe has decided to cash in by producing its own machine-learning software aimed at solving the problem.

Password sharing is a cybersecurity nightmare. But aside from making your system more vulnerable to hackers, Adobe’s own research suggests the practice can be costing streaming services in the US around $25 billion in annual revenue.

Sidestepping the inconvenience of strict device limits and multi-factor authentication, Adobe’s new solution might be able to resolve the issues of Netflix’s current strategy. But with the streaming giant currently testing its own account-sharing feature, Adobe’s high-tech development might have come a little too late.

Abobe’s New ‘Prime Account IQ System’ Aims to Tackle Password Sharing

As inflation rates reach a four-decade high and consumer spending takes a dip, big tech is bracing for impact – and major streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ aren’t exempt. But as these streaming providers start getting serious about password sharing to recover financial losses, Adobe claims to have the solution to their Achilles heel — and it relies on collecting a lot of your data.

The provider’s new software “Prime Account IQ System” uses sophisticated machine-learning models to collect user information and detect behavior patterns on their accounts. This information includes how many devices are on an account and the geographical locations of the users.

After compiling this user data alongside common usage patterns, the system produces a “sharing probability” score which determines the probability of credential sharing. The software also estimates whether these users are likely to be travelers, commuters, close friends and family, or owners of multiple homes.

If Adobe’s Prime Account IQ System decides you’re guilty of password sharing, they will hit you with an “Excessive Sharing” warning. Information regarding these ‘problematic’ accounts would then be passed over to the company, and if users decide to ignore the caution, they risk being blocked from the platform.

Netflix Isn’t Taking Password Sharing Sitting Down

There’s no denying it, Netflix is dominating the streaming services market. But despite being the most widely used platform of its kind, extensive password stealing is an issue that continues to plague the company.

Spurred on by the cost of living crisis, users are using the credentials of their family and friends — or even third parties on the internet — more than ever, leading to a decreasing number of new subscribers. And according to Adobe’s own estimates, this is costing the company around $9 billion each year.

In a bid to tackle this problem, Netflix is currently developing its own account-sharing feature that charges a flat fee of $2.99 for an additional account. This add-on can have its own location, log in details, and user profiles, so basically contains all the trimmings of the main account.

“Widespread account sharing between households undermines our long term ability to invest in and improve our service.” – Statement from Netflix

Netflix is also allowing its users to use their primary account outside of their homes for up to two weeks to cater for holidays or business trips. If users use their main account elsewhere any longer, however, they’ll be expected to pay extra.

This account-sharing option is currently available in Peru, Chile, and Costa Rica, but it’s predicted to be released in more countries, including the US, later this year.

5 Ways To Braid A Horse’S Mane

If you prefer button braids to dangling braids, you’ll need yarn, strong cotton thread, and a needle instead.

If the mane is too thick to braid easily, the sections can be as narrow as ½ inch (1.25 cm).[4]

Dampen the section of mane. Braiding in the yarn will be much easier if you keep the horsehair wet. Work in water, egg white, or hair gel for horses with a comb or your fingers.

Pull down along the horse’s side as you braid, not out toward you, or the braid won’t lie flat.[5]

If you want your braids to look as professional as possible, count the number of crossovers in the braid before you stop, so you can use the same number for each section.

You’ll quickly find out whether you need a shorter or long piece for your horse.

Once you know how long a piece to use, you can save time by laying the yarn back and forth to the correct length, and cutting it into strands all at once.

Insert the yarn in the braid. Fold the yarn over so the tips meet. Place the middle of the yarn over the braid, at the last crossover you did before stopping.

Continue to cross the braid over as usual, pulling downward to keep the yarn and mane taut. Stop when there are 4 inches (10 cm) of hair left hanging.

Tie off the end. Grasp both strands of yarn dangling below the braid, and loop them around the braid tip. Pinch the braid tip together, then thread one yarn end through the loop and pull into a tight knot. Leave the remaining yarn dangling below the braid.

Trim the hair tips (optional). Optionally, you can trim the hair strands beneath the yarn knot. Take care not to cut the yarn, and trim at an angle with a sharp pair of scissors to create a clean point of hair.

Repeat along the length of the mane. Repeat the steps above for the rest of the mane. Each braided section should use the same amount of hair. If the hair thins out toward the bottom of the mane, compensate by making wider sections.

Leave the braids as-is. (Not recommended for competitions.)

Continue to the next step to complete the yarn loop.

Tie off the yarn, cut off the extra, and skip down to the button braid section.

Do not pull any further. The braid tip should not push through the top of the braid, just rest against it.

Loop the yarn tails around the braid. Remove the latch hook and set it aside. Pick up the two yarn tails on a single braid. Loop one yarn tail under from the left and the other from the right, crossing each other under the braid next to the neck.

Repeat with each braid.

Each knot should be in the exact middle of the braid, or the braid will slant.

See the Tips section if you need to leave the braids in overnight.

To remove these braids, just snip the yarn knot and gently pull the yarn through the braid. When all braids are removed, brush the mane with a wet body brush.

How To Reset Windows Update Components On Windows 10

Windows Update is an essential component of Windows 10, as it allows downloading and installing the latest updates with bug fixes, security patches, and drivers. Also, it is the mechanism to download new feature updates and preview builds. However, there will be times when your device may not download or install updates because of a specific error message, Windows Update not connecting to the Microsoft servers, and other problems.

Typically, users may encounter this type of problem when the Windows Update agent-related services stop working, Windows 10 has an issue with the update cache, or some components get corrupted. You can reset Windows Update on Windows 10 to fix most problems in these situations.

This guide will teach you how to reset the Windows Update components using the “Windows Update Troubleshooter” utility. Also, you will learn the instructions to use Command Prompt to fix Windows Update manually to get security patches, drivers, and features downloaded again on your computer. However, before using the Command Prompt option, use the instructions to manually install the most recent update, Service Stack Update (SSU), and repair system files.

To reset Windows Update using the troubleshooter tool on Windows 10, use these steps:

Under the “Get up and running” section, select the Windows Update option.

Continue with the on-screen directions.

Once the computer restarts, try to update Windows 10 one more time, and now it should work as expected.

To install an update manually to fix problems with Windows Update on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open the Windows 10 update history website.

Browse to the latest update information for your version of Windows 10 and note the “KB” number from the left pane.

Open the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Search for the knowledge base (KB) number of the update.

Restart the computer.

To ensure that Windows 10 has the most recent Servicing Stack Update to fix Windows Update problems, use these steps:

Open Settings.

Under the “System type” section, check whether you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 10.

Open the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Download the most recent Servicing Stack Update for the version you have (32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)).

Restart your computer.

After you restart the computer, you should now be able to download and install the update using the Settings app.

To fix the system files using the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) tools to fix Windows Update problems on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open Start.

Type the following DISM command to repair corrupted system files and press Enter:

dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Type the following SFC command to repair system files and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

After completing the steps, the Windows Update components should start working again, and you can check for updates to verify.

To reset Windows Update manually from Command Prompt on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open Start.

Type the following commands to stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Windows Update service, and Cryptographic service, and press Enter on each line:

net stop bits net stop wuauserv net stop appidsvc net stop cryptsvc

Quick tip: You may need to run the command more than once until you see the message that the service has stopped successfully.

Type the following command to delete all the qmgr*.dat files created by BITS from your PC. and press Enter:

Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftNetworkDownloader*.*"

Type Y to confirm the deletion.

Type the following commands to clear the Windows Update cache to allow Windows 10 to re-download the updates instead of using the files already downloaded on the system that might be damaged, and press Enter on each line:

rmdir %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution /S /Q rmdir %systemroot%system32catroot2 /S /Q

Quick tip: We use the remove directory rmdir command with the /S option to delete the specified directory and all subdirectories within the main folder, and the /Q option deletes directories quietly without confirmation. If you get the message “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process,” repeat step 1 and try again, as one of the services might have restarted unexpectedly.

Type the following commands to reset the BITS and Windows Update services to their default security descriptor, and press Enter on each line:

sc.exe sdset bits D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU) sc.exe sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

Type the following command to move to the System32 folder and press Enter:

cd /d %windir%system32

Type the following commands to register all the corresponding BITS and Windows Update DLL files on the Registry and press Enter on each line:

regsvr32.exe /s atl.dll regsvr32.exe /s urlmon.dll regsvr32.exe /s mshtml.dll regsvr32.exe /s shdocvw.dll regsvr32.exe /s browseui.dll regsvr32.exe /s jscript.dll regsvr32.exe /s vbscript.dll regsvr32.exe /s scrrun.dll regsvr32.exe /s msxml.dll regsvr32.exe /s msxml3.dll regsvr32.exe /s msxml6.dll regsvr32.exe /s actxprxy.dll regsvr32.exe /s softpub.dll regsvr32.exe /s wintrust.dll regsvr32.exe /s dssenh.dll regsvr32.exe /s rsaenh.dll regsvr32.exe /s gpkcsp.dll regsvr32.exe /s sccbase.dll regsvr32.exe /s slbcsp.dll regsvr32.exe /s cryptdlg.dll regsvr32.exe /s oleaut32.dll regsvr32.exe /s ole32.dll regsvr32.exe /s shell32.dll regsvr32.exe /s initpki.dll regsvr32.exe /s wuapi.dll regsvr32.exe /s wuaueng.dll regsvr32.exe /s wuaueng1.dll regsvr32.exe /s wucltui.dll regsvr32.exe /s wups.dll regsvr32.exe /s wups2.dll regsvr32.exe /s wuweb.dll regsvr32.exe /s qmgr.dll regsvr32.exe /s qmgrprxy.dll regsvr32.exe /s wucltux.dll regsvr32.exe /s muweb.dll regsvr32.exe /s wuwebv.dll

Quick note: The regsvr32 helps to register “.DLL” files as command components in the Registry, and we use the /S option to specify the tool to run the command silently without prompting additional messages.

Type the following commands to reset the network configurations that might be part of the problem (but do not restart your computer just yet), and press Enter on each line:

netsh winsock reset netsh winsock reset proxy

Type the following commands to restart the BITS, Windows Update, and Cryptographic services, and press Enter on each line:

net start bits net start wuauserv net start appidsvc net start cryptsvc

Restart the computer.

Once you complete the steps, Windows Update should reset and work again on your Windows 10 device.

You can also use the above instructions to fix the update problems when Surface Pro 9, 8, Laptop 5, Studio 2, or any other Surface cannot seem to download a new firmware update.
