A. Install Linux Using a CD-ROM or USB Stick

Download .iso or the ISO files on a computer from the internet and store them on the CD-ROM or USB stick after making it bootable using Pen Drive Linux and UNetBootin.

1. Boot into the USB Stick

It would be best if you restarted your computer after attaching CD –ROM or pen drive to the computer. Press enter at the time of boot, here select the CD-ROM or pen drive option to start the other boot process. Try for a manual boot setting by holding the F12 key to start the boot process. This will allow you to select from various boot options before starting the system. You will get a list from which you must select all the options, whether it is USB or CD ROM or a number of operating systems.

You will see a new screen when your computer boots up called “GNU GRUB,” a boot loader that handles installations for Linux. This screen will only appear if there is more than one operating system.

Set the keyboard layout.

Now you will be asked What apps would you like to install to start with Linux? The two options are ‘Normal installation’ and ‘Minimal installation.’

Choose a type of storage on the physical hard disk. And choose the disk size(min 12 GB as per requirement)

Choose a username and password.

You are almost done. It should take 10-15 minutes to complete the installation. Once the installation finishes, restart the system.

As the economy picks up and IT budgets begin to loosen, the pent-up demand for new equipment will lead to the disposal of more and more retired gear. The big question many CIOs will face in the coming year is what to do with it?

Aside from the ethical and environmental implications of simply using the dumpster and/or shipping stuff overseas to third-world operators, there are serious legal issues every CIO must consider when getting rid of old gear. Like ensuring no personal data is on the hard drive.

Hostage PCs

Some companies have even been held ransom by people that have found data on equipment improperly disposed of, said Gartner Analyst Frances O’Brien. Of course, management insists they are just buying back gear that should have been disposed of properly, but they are paying a premium for the privilege, she said.

“I’ve talked to a lot of clients that have actually had to pay ransom to get their PCs back because they were disposed of with data on them,” she said. “They don’t want it to be in the press so they’re paying. They don’t want to bring the FBI in because they don’t want to see ‘Big Bank USA’s’ name in the press because client data got out.”

Ransoms aside, PCs in particular need to have the OEM operating system installed because of the licensing agreement, said Jenny Blank, director of Enforcement at the Business Software Alliance. But data and applications that did not originally come with the unit must be scrubbed.

Legislative Considerations

Hazardous waste regulations also must be adhered to or the original purchaser of the gear can be held liable. Asset tags need to be removed so equipment is not traceable back to the company of origin. And, if the tags are not, what questions does this raise about the processes and procedures used to cleanse the equipment of data?

Currently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not fine companies for improper disposal of eWaste. But, under the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, companies can be held liable for the toxins, such lead, cadmium, mercury, etc., found in all IT equipment. At the state level, where EPA likes to leave the regulatory work, more and more stringent legislation is being passed to control the proliferation of IT equipment in the waste stream.

There are currently 50 or so pieces of legislation under consideration in 24 different states, said O’Brien. This is because the problem of eWaste is expected to get worse, not better in the coming years. According to the EPA, over the next five years, some 250 million computers will be retired.

So, what do you do?

Another common method of disposal is charitable donations, said Bill Pogue, a senior systems engineer at Aztec Systems, an IT consultancy and services company. But, just because charities will take just about anything, if they can’t use it the problem of disposal does not automatically transfer to them. What ends up in the river or dumped in open field somewhere can, and does, come back on the original owner of the equipment, he said.

Leasing equipment, as many large companies do, doesn’t necessarily negate the problem either. Most lessors charge for disposal services and the OEM license and data issues are still ever present, said Glen Jodoin, vice president of Operations at GreenPages, an IT lifecycle management company.

Nor does responsibility for scrubbing data and adhering to licensing agreements transfer to a third-party vendor automatically, said BSA’s Blank. “You can’t take the operating system off and put it on your new machine and give away the hardware without an operating system,” she said.

What you can do is ask a lot of questions, said Jodoin. Find out about the processes and procedures your contractor will use to scrub data and dispose of gear. Are they just a broker that ships equipment overseas? If they don’t charge for their services, they probably are. Do they remove asset tags? They should. Do they use software that wipes drives down to just the DOS? They shouldn’t.

“But, keep in mind, there is nothing free. I guarantee you when HP (Hewlett Packard) is putting their leases together, in their lease rates included is the cost of disposing of (the equipment).”

A Simple Tool To Help Teachers Regulate Their Emotions

In a year that’s bringing a lot of stress, this tool is no cure-all, but it can help teachers keep their emotions in check.

I remember my first year of teaching being difficult and then each subsequent year getting easier as I improved at the job. But now, for many educators, each year is getting more difficult to navigate, and the emotional toll is devastating.

The reports of educators teaching through trauma and instructional leaders tending to the business of supporting their schools under drastically unfavorable conditions aren’t going away, unfortunately, anytime soon.

In my work with schools, there’s a lot of talk about the abovementioned issues and using emotion regulation strategies to combat the toll of the emotional pain that many educators are undoubtedly experiencing. Although social and emotional learning (SEL) strategies can be critical to restoring our own emotional health under chaotic conditions, it’s important to remember that emotional regulation strategies are not a panacea for the problems and issues facing our schools today—especially those out of our control.

However, neglecting our emotions over time may trigger excessive anxiety and cause apprehension, irritability, or anger. Some may withdraw socially or engage others negatively as a result. Not only can our mood be disrupted, but so can other aspects of life if we do not cope and heal by working through emotional exhaustion due to the buildup of stressors. Unfortunately, many in our profession are living with this.

In an episode of Queen Sugar (one of my favorite shows), a main character, Micah West, said, “I can’t control what happens, but I can control how to respond to things.” I think this is an empowering outlook—even in the most discouraging of times facing schools.

In a previous article, I covered using Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions to help students label and recognize the emotions they’re experiencing along with an emotions planner for self-regulation; with a few tweaks, I have revamped the tool for educators who may need it.

Accurately Labeling Our Emotions

Psychology tells us that emotion is a complex state of feeling that impacts people physically and psychologically. For those of us beginning to understand emotions, it’s essential to realize the way emotions affect the mind, body, and behavior by learning how to recognize and accurately label what we’re experiencing at any given moment. Leveraging a tool like Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions can give us a good starting point for recognizing the wide range of emotions that cause us to feel fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, joy, and love (among other things).

To start labeling accurately on your own, use Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions to recognize your emotions in different situations. The wheel simplifies emotions by causing us to focus on eight primary ones: anger, anticipation, joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, and disgust. This helps categorize emotions and responses to them. Additionally, over time and with practice, one can recognize that other emotions we experience daily are an amalgam of the eight basic emotions and can stem from others as well. This is critical understanding, as it can help us identify emotional triggers required for planning to respond with good self-regulation tactics.

Moreover, this insight is beneficial for understanding the impact of emotions on our own overall well-being and social interactions. For example, in the classroom, a teacher’s anxiety may result from the buildup of stressful situations like focusing on learning recovery, lax or rigid mask mandates, harmful TikTok challenges, or testing amid the pandemic.

Other helpful tidbits for demystifying emotions are that our brain creates emotions by assigning meaning to bodily sensations from our lived experiences; and although they are highly related, we experience emotions and feelings in sequential order—emotions precede feelings, and feelings precede our moods and behavior.

Using an Emotions Planner

During a podcast episode, Sarah Thomas, a school official in Maryland, explained that it’s OK to not be OK if you have a plan to get better. For this purpose, I developed this handy three-step Emotions Planner using my insights from the work of Stanford professor James Gross (see his process model) along with the range of emotions from Plutchik’s tool.

Now that we’ve developed a better understanding of emotions and have Plutchik’s tool for labeling and recognizing them, we can begin gauging where our emotions reside and identify strategies for regulating them effectively by using the Emotions Planner purposefully. This simple check-in can be in response to feeling off or having trouble restoring your inner peace after a difficult social interaction or an intense day at work.

Step 1: Describe the situation or the event that triggered your emotion(s).

Step 2: Label the emotion(s) you are currently experiencing. I recommend using Plutchik’s wheel as a reference, beginning with the eight primary emotions and then elaborating on other emotions.

Step 3: Identify possible emotion regulation strategies. You may also identify which of the five SEL competencies from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, or CASEL, your strategies pertain to. This is helpful if we are imparting SEL to students.

Before anything becomes a mindset, it needs to be a framework first. This tool provided me with a much more streamlined and straightforward process to implement daily or as needed. I found that by paying closer attention to situations and triggers, I began changing how I would experience certain difficult emotions (mainly annoyance and grief) over time. I eventually learned how to conquer some of them as I began to experience small successes in showing up emotionally and responding better to situations.

With more than 800 million monthly users (and growing), Instagram is the place to document life’s moments, big and small, in beautiful little snapshots.

Instagram has also rapidly become one of the hottest marketplaces in the world. By 2023, the app is projected to generate $6.8 billion in mobile ad revenue.

On Instagram, users actively invite the brand into their feed – 80 percent of Instagram users follow at least one brand.

E-commerce brands are particularly well-suited to thrive on Instagram, with 14 percent of users likely to make a purchase directly on the app, not to mention view-through conversion opportunities.

Let’s explore seven tactics to power your Instagram sales funnel to steady success.

Tactic 1: Add a Call to Action in Your Bio

One simple tactic is to add a call-to-action (CTA) in your bio directing your followers back to your e-commerce store.

If you have a current product special, new featured line, or anything else you’d like to promote, use your bio to direct followers where to find out more.

Here’s a good example of how to invite followers to “Shop our Instagram” directly from the bio:

With Instagram’s default functionality for accounts with fewer than 10,000 followers, that’s the only link opportunity you have. Use it wisely.

You can use a paid tool like Link in Profile to have multiple links in your bio.

Check out this example below, where each photo is linked back to your site:

Tactic 2: Link in Story

This feature is only available to accounts with more than 10,000 followers – all the more reason to prioritize Instagram and start building that audience.

Eligible accounts can include links in Instagram stories.

Instagram stories, added last year, allow users to combine photos and videos into a temporary slideshow that disappears after 24 hours.

Elite users can now put a CTA in the Instagram story for people to swipe up to read more.

You can direct followers to your website, a specific product, collection, blog post, and more.

You can even hide hashtags in your photo, using the photo match tool on the left side, next to the color swatch. Use the dropper to match the background of your photo.

By adding hashtags to your Insta-story, you’re giving a new audience an opportunity to find you and navigate to your e-commerce store using the CTA feature.

If you choose this option, make sure to use hashtags relevant to your brand.

While niche hashtags don’t have massive search volume, you are more likely to find a converting customer, so get very familiar with the key hashtags in your space.

Want to use popular hashtags? The sweet spot seems to be between 100,000 to 500,000 uses. More popular, and there’s no way your brand will have visibility in all the noise.

Tactic 3: Collaborate With Influencers

Brands spend an estimated $1 billion annually on Instagram influencer marketing.

Influencers, who range from local fitness trainers or photographers with small followings to A-list celebrities, have turned social media marketing into an art form.

While top influencers like Beyoncé can earn more than $1 million per post, the average sponsored post costs about $300.

With the right strategy, your brand can strike up a strategic partnership with influencers that generates great return on investment in terms of conversions and brand awareness.

In working with influencers, you’re able to leverage their network and brand to bring awareness to your e-commerce offerings.

Even with tightening restrictions on sponsored content transparency, followers continue to welcome endorsements from trusted Insta-stars.

Daniel Wellington does a great job of working with influencers and has made a big footprint on Instagram with their watches.

If you are dipping your toes into influencers waters, be vigilant. Just because they have a high follower count or charge a heavy price doesn’t make it a good fit or guarantee success.

To start, make sure that their audience is real.  Type their username into Social Blade and you can see some of their Instagram Analytics. If they have a real following they should generally have a gradual increase. If their following has a lot of peaks and declines, they most likely bought followers.

You can also ask for their demographics/media kit to ensure they are the right fit for your campaign. The higher the following, the higher the price per collaboration so micro-influencers are becoming more popular. These influencers have a modest but engaged following and often have a niche which helps to target your marketing.

Tactic 4:  Free Product, Just Pay Shipping

This can be a great approach to get your product out there and into the hands of consumers, especially if it is a product people are likely to buy more than once.

This strategy can draw a lot of attention, but you have to make sure it is executed properly.

Be wary about viewing these buyers as guaranteed future customers.

People might accept a free item, but that doesn’t mean they need or want to pay full price for an equivalent product in the future.

Just like social contests bring a lot of attention but rarely result in sustained success, this tactic has the same downside.

Additionally, you have to make sure you have enough inventory to follow through.

There have been a few scams using this tactic where people never received the product, and you don’t want your brand to be given a bad reputation due to inventory issues.

Tactic 5:  Shopify Integration

Shopify is currently in the testing phase of shoppable Instagram posts.

This integration allows e-commerce stores to sell to buyers directly through the Instagram app, without ever having to navigate to a website or outside platform.

This feature is now available to some accounts as a beta release.
