How To Convert Text Dates To Proper Date Format In Excel? – Webnots

Why to Use Proper Date Format?

Sorting of columns based on dates

Subtracting or adding dates

Filter data based year or month or date

Data analysis based on dates

Storing Dates in Excel

The default date display in Excel depends on the regional settings from your computer. However, when you enter the date in different format (like 24 Jan 2024), the cell will automatically use “Custom” format. It is also possible; the date cell’s formats are wrongly changed to “Text” or “Number” causing the following problems.

Dates look like numbers.

Cells with dates show a green triangle on top left corner of the cell.

Shows in different date format like 23/05/24 which may confuse you as do not know which is the year or date.

Formula errors due to wrong format.

Good part is that regardless of what you see, Excel stores the date as a sequential serial number from 01 Jan 1900 (or 01 Jan 1904) to 31 Dec 9999. For example, 01 Jan 1900 is stored in Excel as 1 and 01 Jan 2024 is stored as 45292. You can use one of the following methods to convert the serial number to proper date format as you like.

1. Dates Show as Numbers in Excel

When the cells use other formats like “General”, “Number” or “Text”, Excel will show the dates as numbers like below. You can change the cell formatting in column B to convert the numbers into dates. There are multiple ways to change the cell formatting in Excel. We explain here with Microsoft 365 Excel for Mac version and the steps are same in Excel for Windows version also.

1.1. Using Copy Paste Formatting

You change the formatting of first cell (B2) and copy paste on other cells (B3 to B6). Though our example is simple, this copy pasting of formatting is useful when the cells are scattered over different columns in the sheet.

Dates Showing as Numbers in Excel

Select “Format Cells” option from the context menu to open “Format Cells” pop-up. Alternatively, you can press Command + 1 in Mac or Control + 1 in Windows to open “Format Cells” pop-up.

Formatting Date Cells in Excel

Now, the selected cell will show the date instead of number and copy that cell (B2) by pressing “Control + V” or “Command + V”.

Format Applied to First Cell

Select all other cells showing numbers (B3 to B6) and paste by pressing “Control + V” or “Command+ V”.

Excel Paste Options

This will show lot of options and select “Formatting” to apply date format to other cells also. On Excel Windows version, you will see icons instead of text menu and select “Formatting” icon under “Other Paste Options”.

This will apply the date formatting to all selected cells and convert the number into date proper format.

Apply Formatting Paste Options

Remember, you can change the date display to any formats like 22-Jan-24 or 22/01/24 or 01/22/24 from the “Format Cells” pop-up. The selected format will be applied to all the cells when you paste.

1.2. Select Cells and Apply Date Formatting

In this method, select all the cells (B1 to B6) and apply the formatting at once.

Apply Long or Short Date Format in Excel

2. Date Cells Show with Green Triangle

Converting to 4 Digit Date Format

3. #VALUE! Formula Errors

When you reference cells with wrong date formats in date related formulas, Excel will show #VALUE! error as it can’t calculate the result.

4. DATEVALUE Issue

DATEVALUE function is useful to get the serial number for dates from a cell value. However, the cell SHOULD be in a plan text format for this to work. In this case, you SHOULD NOT use date format even though the cell contains a date. For example, referencing 20 Jan 2024 in DATEVALUE function will show the serial number as 45311 only when the referenced cell is in “Text” format. otherwise, you will see #VALUE! error.

Msi Gs65 Stealth Thin Review: This Thin Gaming Laptop Features 9Th

The MSI GS65 Stealth Thin 9SD has a tradition to uphold. Its predecessor, MSI’s GS65 Stealth Thin 8RE, was the laptop that changed our perception of just how much real gaming performance you could pack into a thin-and-light gaming laptop. With the next generation, we find essentially the same winning laptop design, stuffed with the latest toys from Intel and Nvidia.

The newest incarnation of the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin 9SD ups the ante with Intel’s newest 6-core 9th gen Core i7-9750H, along with Nvidia’s gift to those who just don’t give a damn about ray tracing: A GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. Thanks to a slight lack of coordination between Intel’s and Nvidia’s product cycles. The GS65 Stealth Thin will find itself battling with laptops such as Acer’s Predator Triton 500  or Alienware’s m15 Thin, both of which feature older 8th-gen CPUs, but Nvidia’s newer ray-trace-enabled RTX GPUs.

Adam Patrick Murray

MSI’s updated GS65 Stealth Thin features a 9th-gen Core i7-9750H and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU.

MSI GS65 Stealth Thin specs

As we said, the GS65 Stealth Thin is the first laptop we’ve reviewed with Intel’s 9th-gen mobile 6-core CPU. Let’s run down all the specs:

CPU: Intel 6-core 9th gen Core i7-9750H

Memory: 16GB DDR4/2667 in dual-channel mode

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

Display: 15.6-inch 144Hz “IPS-like” screen without G-Sync

Storage: 512GB WD SN520 NVMe M.2 SSD

Networking: 802.11ac using an Intel AC9560 controller and Rivet Networks E2500 Gigabit ethernet.

Dimensions: 14 x 9.75 x 0.75 inches

Weight: 4.4 pounds

That last bullet point is worth pointing out. While the original GS65 we reviewed last year was stupidly light at 4 pounds, MSI has added about 6 ounces to it. Some of that heft likely came from welcome structural reinforcements compared to the original run, which we called “flexible.” How flexible? Well, let’s just say it was a little scary to pick it up by one corner. The current version doesn’t flex much at all, but it’s definitely a little heavier unfortunately.

MSI GS65 Stealth Thin Ports

As a gaming and workhorse laptop, the GS65 brings on the ports. The right side gives you USB-A, Thunderbolt 3, miniDisplayPort and full-size HDMI. Careful observers will also note the dedicated power plug on the right side. That may tick off some right-handed gamers who don’t like power cords on the same side as their mousing hand, but MSI does at least provide a right-angle plug to make routing less obtrusive.

Adam Patrick Murray

The GS65 Stealth Thin 9SD controversially puts the power plug on the right side, which could annoy some gamers.

Adam Patrick Murray

MSI’s updated GS65 Stealth Thin features a 9th gen Core i7-9750H and Nvidia’s new GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU.

MSI GS65 Keyboard and Trackpad

The trackpad, however, is going to cause consternation among some people. It’s a wide aspect-ratio trackpad with a fairly smooth surface. The original GS65 Stealth Thin 8RE featured a more conventionally sized trackpad, centered on the Y key. The GS65 Stealth Thin 9SD’s trackpad is so wide it’s centered nearly an inch to the right of last year’s model, making it almost impossible to keep your right palm off of it while typing. To its credit, however, the palm rejection is excellent. And if you mouse with your thumb instead of your index finger, as some people do, this trackpad is for you.

Adam Patrick Murray

The keyboard features per key RGB lighting and a wide-aspect ratio trackpad with Microsoft precision driver support.

MSI GS65 Stealth Thin upgrade options: Not fun

Outside of hulks such as Alienware’s Area 51m, upgrades on gaming laptops are generally limited to storage and RAM. With the GS65 Stealth Thin, however, the inverted motherboard design places the two M.2 slots and two SO-DIMM slots out of reach. You’d need to remove ribbon cables and pull the motherboard out of the system to upgrade either. That’s just not something the average person is going to attempt, because bending a ribbon cable would likely brick the laptop.

Gordon Mah Ung

MSI’s GS65 Stealth Thin continues to use an inverted motherboard design which makes adding storage or RAM a scary proposition for most consumers.

MSI GS65 Stealth Thin CPU Performance

There are two big upgrades inside the GS65 Stealth Thin, and it’s worth looking at just what you get. If you read our story about 8th gen Core i7 vs. 9th gen Core i7, you that going from an 8th-gen Core i7-8750H to a 9th-gen Core i7-9750H is nothing major. There’s no core jump from one generation to the other, for example. You still get a decent 15-percent base clock difference (where the CPU runs at during worst-case scenarios), and a 9-percent increase in Turbo Boost.

We see that play out in our Cinebench R15 3D modelling test, which pushes all the cores of the CPU. The GS65 Stealth Thin outpaces all Core i7-8750H laptops by a decent margin and can actually stand with 8th-gen Core i9 chips. For the most part though, we’re looking at about 9 percent more performance.

IDG

We’re we too harsh? There’s no additional cores in the 9th gen Core i7-9750H but the performance boost is respectable.

Running Cinebench R15 on a single core, we also see the 9th-gen pull out ahead. The difference narrows to about 5 percent between the old GS65 and the new one.

IDG

Single-threaded performance is marginally better than older 8th gen CPUs but enough to upgrade?

As you can see, the GS65 Stealth Thin does relatively well (about 7 percent faster) compared to other 8th-gen Core i7 laptops, but surprisingly it ties with the Acer Predator Triton 500. Acer is likely driving its CPU at higher clocks than usual compared to other 8th-gen laptops. It also confirms that overall, the 9th-gen CPU is a minor upgrade from 8th-gen.

IDG

In our lengthy HandBrake encode, we can see the impact of running the CPU harder for a longer period of time.

MSI GS65 Stealth Thin 9SD GPU performance

Our first gaming test is UL’s popular 3DMark Fire Strike test. We focus on the graphics result, which filters out the CPU’s impact. First up, we can see that when compared to the previous GS65 Stealth Thin 8RE and its GeForce GTX 1060, the 9SD sees a hefty 19-percent step up in performance.

IDG

We saw about a 19-percent performance bump going from the previous GS65’s GTX 1060 to the newer GS65’s GTX 1660 Ti.

IDG

In DX12 tests with more shader and compute tasks, the GTX 1660 Ti easily steps away from GeForce GTX 1060 and GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q laptops.

To back up our synthetic tests we also run real games, and the results pretty much track as expected. In Rise of The Tomb Raider at 1920×1080 resolution set to Very High quality and in DX11 mode, the GS65 Stealth Thin’s GTX 1660 Ti runs away from the older GTX 1060, keeping pace with most GeForce GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Max-Q laptops.

IDG

Rise of the Tomb Raider echoes our synthetic 3DMark results for the GS65 and its GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU.

MSI GS65 Stealth Thin Battery Performance

Our last test looks at the all-important battery performance. While large desktop replacements will likely they spend most of their life on a desk, portable gaming laptops mat get called into service because they’re more mobile.

MSI’s design cues for the newest GS65 follow what it did for the original GS65: It puts in a decently-sized battery of 80 watt-hours instead of saving on weight and size with a smaller one.

It all adds up to to about six hours of battery life when playing a 4K video in airplane mode, at a relatively bright 250 to 260 nits. We’d rank that in the good range. In general use where you don’t push the GPU or CPU hard, we’d say expect from four to six hours depending on the task. If you run a game or CPU-intensive task, expect battery life to plunge to an hour or two, in a worst-case scenario.

IDG

The MSI GS65 Stealth Thin gives up about 6 hours of run time when playing videos. Expect far worse if using the CPU or GPU strenuously.

Conclusion

It’s hard to believe but when we first saw the original MSI GS65 Stealth Thin 8RE a year ago, there was scant competition in its class. Sure, you had Gigabyte’s Aero 15X series (heavier) and  the original Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 (faster but heavier, with compromised battery life), but few other players were pushing the kind of performance you got in the GS65 Stealth Thin.

Today, however, it feels like a whole different world. Besides Alienware’s m15, Acer’s Predator Triton 500 and the Razer Blade 15 among others, thin gaming laptops are a a crowded field now. Against this crowded field, the GS65 Stealth Thin offers top-notch performance in its class and is very price-competitive too. It just doesn’t have the same uniqueness it once did.

Using The Right File Format For Storing Data

This article was published as a part of the Data Science Blogathon

Introduction

We are living in an era of data. Every day we generate thousands of terabytes creating thousands and thousands of machine learning and deep learning models day by day to find solutions to modern problems. These problems include future sales prediction, fraudulent activity detection, the presence of diseases in patients, and so on. The accuracy and efficiency of these models highly depend on the data we feed to these models. As we are reaching closer to the era of Artificial Intelligence, the hunger for data for these models is increasing too, to achieve outstanding performance. A deep analysis is done on data and so it is important to structure and maintain the data properly in appropriate ways so that it could be accessed and modified easily.

In this article, we will be going to learn about different file formats. We will learn about how the same data can be stored in different file formats and which file format should be preferred for a specific application. We will also learn about row and columnar ways of storing data, how they two are different from each other and what could be the reason behind choosing one over the other.

Propriety vs Free file formats

A propriety file format is a specific file format that is owned and used by the company. Reading and editing in these file formats require propriety software. This is to ensure that the users cannot read, modify or copy the source code and resell it as their own product.

Free file formats on the other hand are open source and can be read using open-source software. Data present in these file formats can be read, changed, modified by users, and can be used for their own purpose using simple tools and libraries. We will be going to cover only open file formats in this article.

We start with one of the most common and favorite file formats for storing textual data of all time that is CSV.

CSV (Comma Separated Values)

CSV is one of the most common file formats for storing textual data. These files can be opened using a wide variety of programs including Notepad. The reason behind using this format over others is its ability to store complex data in a simple and readable way. Moreover, CSV files offer more security as compared to file formats like JSON. In python, it is easy to read these types of files using a special library called Pandas.

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)–

It is a standard format for storing textual data based on JavaScript object index. It is basically used for transmitting data in web applications. Unlike CSV, JSON allows you to create a hierarchical structure of your data. JSON allows data to be stored in many data types including strings, arrays, booleans, integers, etc.

JSON formats are easy to integrate with APIs and can store a huge amount of data efficiently. They provide scalability and support to relational data.

import pandas as pd # Reading json file using pandas file_json = pd.read_json("file.json")#replace file with actual file name # printing the top 5 entries present in the csv file print(file_json.head()) XML (Extensible Markup Language)

This file format has a structure similar to HTML and it is used to store data and transfer data without being dependent on software and hardware tools. XML language is Java compatible and any application that is capable of processing it can use your information, whatever the platform is.

import pandas as pd # Reading a xml file using pandas file_xml = pd.read_xml("file.xml")#replace file with actual file name # printing the top 5 entries present in the csv file print(file_xml.head())

Note: Pandas read_xml function is available in the latest pandas version 1.3.0 So you might have to upgrade pandas. You can do that with the below command

pip3 install --upgrade pandas YAML ( YAML Ain’t Markup Language) –

YAML is a data serialization language that is mainly used for human interaction. It is a superset of JSON which means it includes all the features of JSON and more. Unlike other file formats, YAML uses indentation as part of its formatting like python. The benefits of using YAML over other file formats are:

Files are portable and transferable between different programming languages.

Expressive and extensive format

Files support a Unicode set of characters

import pyyaml from yaml.loader import SafeLoader # Open and load the file with open('Sample.yaml') as file: data = yaml.load(file, Loader=SafeLoader) print(data) Parquet

Parquet is a binary file format that allows you to store data in a columnar fashion. Data inside parquet files are similar to RDBMS style tables but instead of accessing one row at a time, we are accessing one column at a time. This is beneficial when we are dealing with millions and billions of records having a very little number of attributes.

import pyarrow.parquet as pq # Read the table using pyarrow table = pq.read_table('example.parquet') # Convert the table to pandas dataframe table = table.to_pandas() # print the table print(table.head()) Row vs columnar file formats

Most of the files we use in our daily life are present in row file formats where we are searching each record before moving to the next. Data present in these formats are easy to read and modify as compared to columnar formats like parquet. But when we are dealing with a huge number of records, simple operations like searching and deletion cost a considerable amount of time. To deal with the problem,  we use columnar file formats

Why use columnar file formats Data compression techniques

Gzip – This file format is used for data and file compression. It is based on DEFLATE algorithm which is based on Huffman and LZ77 coding. This is a lossless way of compression. The amazing thing is that it allows multiple files to be compressed as a single archive. It provides a better compression ratio than other compression formats at the cost of a slower speed. It is the best for storing data that don’t need to be modified frequently.

Snappy – These file formats provide faster compression but fail to provide a better compression ratio than Gzip. However, this compression format can be best suitable to compress data that require frequent modification.

Conclusion

There are various file formats available for storing data and creating your own datasets. But choosing one depend upon the requirements and the type of data. To choose a format that is best suitable for your application, you should at least be aware of the available options. Other than that, you should be aware of your priorities like data security, size of data, speed of operations, etc. For example, if data security is the highest priority it is better to use CSV files over JSON, or maybe choosing propriety file format could be the best option.

How To Improve Your Linux Pc Audio With Pulseeffects

Is it possible to improve your Linux PC’s audio without having to buy an expensive dedicated sound card? Say hello to PulseEffects.

With PulseEffects, you can make the sound louder or apply auto-gain that “normalizes” frequencies automatically so that you can hear whispers in movies and explosions that don’t destroy your speakers. You can enhance your music’s bass levels or apply the equivalent of Creative’s “Crystalizer” effects, which can make your MP3s sound like a live concert.

Install PulseEffects

To install PulseEffects on Debian, Ubuntu, and compatible distributions, use:

sudo

apt

install

pulseeffects

On Arch and derivatives, try:

sudo

pacman

-S

pulseeffects

Fedora lovers can find PulseEffects in the official repositories and bring it on board with:

sudo

dnf

install

pulseeffects

Afterward, find it in your Applications menu and run it.

Limiter

Limiter does what its name states: it sets limits to the maximum allowed audio levels. Every audio equipment has limits, and if you exceed them, it under-performs. When the sound is louder than our equipment can output, it gets clipped off and becomes annoying noise.

By enabling the Limiter, you’re setting a ceiling to how loud your sound can go. Although the sound levels will initially be lower, they’ll soon catch up and normalize to what you’d expect. After that, the Limiter will catch any sudden loud noises and lower their volume so that it doesn’t exceed the limits you’ve set.

In other words, no more heart attacks from the blast of noise when the killer appears on-screen.

The Limiter works great with the default values. For movies, you may want to decrease the lookahead time to reduce any induced delay to the audio. For music, where delays aren’t annoying, you can increase it. This will allow the Limiter to look further ahead in the audio stream and have more time for smoother reactions to upcoming volume changes.

Auto Gain

With Auto Gain, you can turn up the volume on whispers without having to make everything louder. It works thusly:

By continuously monitoring your audio levels, it can detect loud noises and bring them down to your desired level (set in the “Target” field).

Everything at lower levels is boosted to be brought closer to your desired loudness level.

This happens dynamically. There’s constant re-adjustment as the audio plays so that loud noises remain loud but whispers still play at a lower volume than other sounds.

Let your audio play in the background and play with the Target level while monitoring the output levels on the right and the values at the bottom of the panel (Integrated, Relative, Range, etc.)

Increase the Target level so that the values are as loud as possible until you notice clipping. You’ll also see it visually with the displayed bars nearly always staying instead of being momentarily closer to their max value. At that point, slowly reduce the value so that your bars rarely reach 100.

Bass Enhancer

Does your audio sound hollow? Maybe enhancing its bass can help.

Bass Enhancer doesn’t only improve low frequencies, nor does it try to make the drums in music sound like explosions. Instead, it enriches the existing frequencies with new, artificially created frequencies.

The harmonics added to the original signal make our ears perceive the final result as richer and can be a significant upgrade to the usually thin sound of laptop speakers.

‘ To use the Bass Enhancer, leave your audio playing and enable the filter. You can:

Increase the “Amount” value to add more harmonics to the original signal.

Increase the “Harmonics” value to ask for more frequencies to be created apart from the original ones.

The frequency harmonics created are over the “Scope” value. By decreasing that, you increase the amount of the frequencies create and also the possible distortion range for your sound.

Decrease the “Floor” value. Bass Enhancer doesn’t create frequencies under this value. Lower “floor,” more space for more automatically generated harmonics – but as with the other values, increased possibility of distortion.

Note that the final result also depends on the sound material. Your settings may sound fine for some pop music but heavily distorted with metal or drum ‘n’ bass. You should try a range of audio and try to find the optimal values for what you usually listen to and your particular sound system.

Crystalizer

Popularized by Creative’s X-Fi series of audio cards, the Crystalizer can reduce the effects of compression for audio sources like MP3s.

The Crystalizer achieves its magic in a similar way to Bass Enhancer: by analyzing the available frequencies and creating new ones that complement the existing audio. The resulting audio has an expanded dynamic range and sounds much more vibrant than the original. Those who like Crystalizer believe it can make a highly compressed MP3 sound as if you were at a live concert. Audio purists, though, don’t like the artificiality of the enhanced sound, similar to the difference between a live recording and one produced in a studio.

Crystalizer’s default values are a nice middle-ground for most types of audio. Its impact is immediately felt after enabling it. You can play with the individual values afterward to increase or decrease its effect on your audio.

Improve Your Audio

We saw only a subset of the filters provided by PulseEffects. It’s worth looking into the rest of the available functionality to further customize your audio.
