Firmware update 2.2 surprised a few people who accidentally updated their iPhone. If that happened to you, you now have 2 choices: either stay and 2.2 and wait for the Dev Team to come up with a jailbreak method for 2.2, or you can try to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1.

I personally don’t have this issue. I haven’t updated to 2.2 but I figured that some of you guys may have, so I started looking for a solution to post here. The problem is there doesn’t seem to be a solution that works for one main reason: 2.2 updates your baseband and once your baseband is updated, you can’t downgrade it to 2.1 (not as yet anyway).

From what I read, only 2-3 people were actually able to get their iPhone back to 2.1 without issues but it is very unclear what they did exactly… Now let’s have a look at these different methods that supposedly show you how to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2 to 2.1.

Note that I haven’t tried this and I do not approve it. If you choose to try any of these methods, understand that you’re doing it at your own risks. If I were you, I would just wait for a new jailbreak method by the Dev Team.

For downgrading iPhone Firmware 2.2 to an earlier version you will need to downgrade the baseband and firmware, for this following software are needed:

Use Ziphone to downgrade the baseband using the settings as shown below.

Now, use Quickpwn to unlock and jailbreak using the same firmware flash file used to restore in previous step.

Your iPhone should be jailborken and unlocked now.

First you need to download iPhone firmware 2.1 (for 1st iPhone, use this download link and for iPhone 3G, use this download link).

You can then follow these steps to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2 to firmware 2.1:

Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. If things had gone horribly wrong while hacking your iPhone and iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.

You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode (this is required only if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone):

Connect your iPhone to your computer.

Turn iPhone off.

Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).

Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.

A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.

In the Summary Tab, Hold down Option and press the “Restore” button. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the Restore button. (This is an important step as just pressing the “Restore” button will result in restoring your iPhone with the latest firmware which is firmware 2.2 currently, by holding down Option in case of Mac or Shift in case of Windows, allows you choose the firmware file that you want to downgrade to.)

You should be able to see all the older iPhone firmware files you had downloaded so far, select iPhone firmware 2.1 file (iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw) to restore your iPhone or browse to the folder where you have downloaded it and select it.

You might get the any of the following errors: 1011, 1013, 1015, you can ignore them. However, if you get errors such as: 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and try again.

How to download correct firmware file

This is the important part!

Be sure to check and find the correct the model no. of your Galaxy Note Edge. Then based on your device’s model no., look for the appropriate firmware build from above.

Now that you know the model no., download the latest firmware from above for that model no. exactly.

How to Install Firmware

Backup, backup, backup! Create an appropriate backup of contacts, pictures, videos, songs and other important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have a backup of all your important files. Sometimes, firmware installation may delete everything on your device! Like, when you change the CSC of your device, knowingly or not.

Step-by-step Firmware Installation Guide

Let’s see how to install the firmware on your Galaxy Note Edge. Make sure you have more than 30% battery on your device.

Step 1. Make sure you have downloaded the correct firmware file on your PC. See above for how to download correct firmware file for your Galaxy Note Edge and download links.

Step 3. Also, download Odin PC software (latest version).

Step 5. Extract the Odin file. You should get the Odin exe file (other files could be hidden, hence not visible).

Step 6. Disconnect your Galaxy Note Edge from PC if it is connected.

Step 7. Boot into download mode:

Power off your device. Wait for 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.

Press and hold the three buttons Volume down + Home + Power together until you see Warning screen.

Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.

Step 9. Connect your device now using USB cable. Odin should recognize your device. It’s a must. When it recognizes, you will see Added!! message appearing in the Log box in bottom left, and the first box under ID:COM will also show a no. and turn its background blue. Look at the pic below.

You cannot proceed until you get the Added!! message, which confirms that Odin has recognized your device.

If you don’t get Added!! message, you need to install/re-install drivers again, and use the original cable that came with device. Mostly, drivers are the problem (look at step 2 above).

You can try different USB ports on your PC too.

Load the firmware files(s) on your device. This depends on how many files you got in step 4 above upon extracting the firmware .zip file.

Case 1: If you got a single .tar/.tar.md5 file, then load this into AP tab of your Odin software. Then go to next step.

Case 2: If you got more than one .tar/.tar.md5 file, then you must be having files starting with AP, CSC, Home_CSC, BL, CP, etc. stuff. In this case, choose the files as following. Select the firmware files as follows.

About CSC file: Using the HOME_CSC file won’t reset your device, and data on the phone shouldn’t be deleted. However, when we select regular CSC file, and it results in CSC on device being different than that in CSC file, your phone will be formatted automatically. You can even choose to ignore loading the CSC file, that may do alright too. But if it doesn’t works out, repeat the whole process and select CSC file this time around.

Info: When you load files, Odin checks the md5 of firmware file, which takes time. So, simply wait until that’s done and the firmware file is loaded. Don’t worry if Odin gets unresponsive for a while, it’s normal. Binary size will also show up in Odin.

Go back to Log tab now, as it will show the progress of firmware installation when you hit start button in next step.

Wait till installation is finished, after which your device will reboot automatically. You’ll get PASS message as shown below upon successful installation from Odin.

Some errors you may run into, and with respective solution.

If Odin gets stuck at setup connection, then you need to do this all again. Disconnect your device, close Odin, boot device into download mode again, open Odin, and then select the file and flash it again as said above.

If you get FAIL in the top left box, then also you need to flash the file again as stated just above.

That’s it. Let device restart automatically.

Restore Galaxy S3 I9300 With Xxblg8 Firmware, Get The Search Function Back, Too!

Update: The XXBLG8 firmware for Galaxy S3 was alreadya  very good firmware to apply on the phone, or for restoring it to normal Samsung state, but it has grown even more in importance because in order to try the latest pretty-cool unofficial Samsung Jelly Bean firmwares (also available as OTA updates), you need XXBLG8 as base. Meaning, you have to have XXBLG8 installed on your Galaxy S3 before installing the cool Android 4.1 Jelly Bean firmwares, like, XXDLI1 and XXDLI2. So, you better download and keep the XXBLG8 firmware on your PC, for you might need it again for new Jelly Bean firmwares for your favorite device.

Just a day ago Samsung released the XXBLG6 Android 4.0.4 update for the Galaxy S3 in the UK, which it turns out removed the universal search feature – i.e searching through the web as well as local data such as contacts, messages, apps, etc. – from the phone, which Samsung claims was a mistake (the feature is to be removed from the US variants as Apple has a patent on it and won a case against Samsung for its usage but isn’t needed to be removed from the international variant). Now, a new update – XXBLG8 – is rolling out that restores the search feature back to the devices that updated to XXBLG8.

If you are running the XXBLG6 firmware right now (check in Settings » About), you can update to the XXBLG8 firmware by following the guide below. Even if you aren’t, XXBLG8 is the latest firmware to come out so you can update to it no matter which country you may be in or what firmware you may be running.

NOTE: Even though the firmware is for UK/Europe, you can flash it on your Galaxy S3 as long as it is the international variant with model number i9300, though you might have to wipe your data (except SD card files) in order to get it to work and then restore them later.

Let’s take a look at how you can update to the XXBLG6 firmware on your Galaxy S3.

Compatibility

This hack and the guide below are compatible only and only with the international Galaxy S3, model number i9300. It’s not compatible with the US variants or other devices. Check your device’s model number in: Settings » About phone.

NOTE: Don’t forget to at least make a backup of your APN settings, which you can restore later if your data connection does not work after installing the ROM. Use the backup guide to find out how.

Extract the I9300XXBLG8_I9300OXABLG8_BTU.zip file on the computer to obtain a file named I9300XXBLG8_I9300OXABLG8_I9300XXLG8_HOME.tar.md5.

Extract the contents of the Odin3_v3.04.zip file to a folder on your computer.

Now, turn off your Galaxy S3 and wait for it to shut down completely.

Then, put the phone into download mode. To do so, press and hold these keys together: Volume Down + Home + Power till the screen turns on. Then press Volume Up to enter download mode.

If you don’t get this message, make sure you installed drivers correctly (using Kies or directly) as given in step 1. If it still doesn’t work, try changing to another USB port on the computer and also use the USB ports on the back if you have a desktop PC.

Important! Do not make any other changes in Odin except selecting the required files as given in step 11. Leave all other options as they are. Make sure Re-Partition check box is not selected.

What do if Odin gets stuck or doesn’t do anything: If ODIN gets stuck on setup connection or at any stage of this process after you’ve hit the Start button, and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or if upon completion of the process you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, do this: disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery for 4-5 seconds, re-insert it, turn phone on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 9.

After you get the PASS message and the phone reboots, the phone might get stuck at the booting animation. If that happens, perform the following steps to make it boot. Remember that these steps will wipe your personal data like contacts, apps, messages, etc. If your phone has already booted, skip these steps, your phone has been updated successfully:

Boot to recovery mode — for which, first power off phone (by removing battery and reinserting it), wait for 5-6 seconds, and then press and hold Home + Volume Up + Power keys together till the screen turns on, then let them go to boot into recovery. Once you are in recovery mode, use volume keys to move the selection up and down and home/power key to select the option.

Go to Wipe data/Factory Reset and select it. Select Yes on next screen.

Now, go to Wipe Cache and select it. Confirm Yes on next screen.

Then, select reboot system now to reboot the phone, which will now boot properly.
