In this week’s edition of EduTech, we’re going to discuss how to turn paper documents and handwritten notes into searchable PDFs using your iOS device. There are a few apps that do this, but the app that we’re going to focus on is Scanbot…

Turning your physical documents and handwritten notes into searchable PDFs is a great way to stay organized in an increasingly digital world Many people still take notes with pen and paper, and that’s perfectly ok. If that’s how you learn best, there’s nothing wrong with it.

There are, of course, some pitfalls with handwritten notes, including difficulties in locating specific words and topics and not always having those papers with you. That’s what today’s EduTech aims to fix.

How to scan documents and make them searchable with Scanbot

The first thing you have to do is obviously scan in whatever document you want with the built-in camera. Simply tap the “+” button at the top of the app and take a picture of the document in question. Scanbot will automatically recognize the edges of the document and instruct you to move closer, move further back, increase the light, or something else.

Once the edges have been detected, the image will be captured. You can also enable “continuous mode,” which will automatically detect new edges and take new scans as you flip pages. From there, you’ll hit the save button and then have the option to perform optimal character recognition.

In order to make the scanned document searchable, you’ll need to run the optical image recognition process. This process is in addition to the initial scanning process, but it’s super quick. Once you initiate it, the optical character recognition process takes anywhere from a few seconds to a minute per page, depending on how many characters there are.

Once the OCR process is finished and you open the scan, you’ll be able select the text, search through it, and copy/paste. As far as accuracy goes, that really depends on the quality of the document you’re scanning.

Handwritten documents are obviously more prone to error depending on the quality of your writing. I’ve also had better luck when writing in pen rather than writing with pencil. I tend to have rather sloppy handwriting and therefore some issues with OCR, but your mileage will vary.

As for other documents, such as handouts, practice tests, and worksheets, Scanbot’s OCR is crazy accurate. Most of the discrepancies, if there are any, come with punctuation rather than letters and words.

Other options

There are other apps that support OCR and while we won’t dive into details here, below are some suggestions if Scanbot doesn’t suit your needs. My personal suggestion from this list is Scanner Pro.

There’s also, of course, the option of buying a physical document scanner. This isn’t necessarily something that I recommend, but they have gotten relatively affordable. Below are some recommendations:

Those are just some of the apps that make it incredibly easy to keep track of and scan documents and notes. Everyone has their own methodology for taking notes and it’s up to you find what suits your needs best. One suggestion I would have is to consider an iPad Pro + Apple Pencil setup. I’ve rounded up some of the best app for taking notes with those devices here.

Sticky Notes Windows 11 Not Working? (How To Fix)

Sticky Notes is one of the most widely used built-in apps in Windows. It allows users to quickly jot down notes and place them on the desktop. Since Windows 11, there have been issues with the Sticky Notes which cause users to not be able to open the notes, other errors that cause the app to not work, or the sticky notes app is simply missing from Windows 11.

The Sticky Notes not working issue is commonly encountered by users who just upgraded their PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11. This guide will show you several workarounds you can try to fix the problem.

How to fix Sticky Notes not working in Windows 11

In most cases, the issue is caused by a known bug that can be resolved by simply applying an update. Microsoft gradually releases updates and patches that fix known bugs including those that affects their popular apps such as Sticky Notes. You should first try to run the Windows Update if your Windows 11 is not of the latest build.

Another fix you should try before other solutions is to update check and see if there is any update to the Sticky Notes app via Microsoft Store. Sticky Notes is originally from Microsoft Store. It can be installed via the Microsoft Store if one doesn’t have the app pre-installed on their Windows.

To update Sticky Notes app in Windows 11, first open Microsoft Store from the taskbar or Start menu.

If the Sticky Notes app is still not working or won’t open after running Windows Update and updating the app through MS Store, the next thing to try is to repair the app via Settings. To repair Sticky Notes app in Windows 11, follow the steps below.

Now, try to open Sticky Notes again and see if the issue is resolved. If it doesn’t, you can try to reset the app. However, please be warned that resetting the Sticky Notes app will wipe all its data, which means all your local notes (if there is any) will be permanently deleted.

But if you have previously signed in to Sticky Notes using your Microsoft account prior to the problem and your notes did synced to your account (as back up), you can retrieve your notes by signing back into the same Microsoft account after the reset.

If Sticky Notes still doesn’t work or is missing from Windows 11 after trying all the solutions above, the last resort would be to uninstall and reinstall the app. Note: Uninstalling Sticky Notes will also delete all your previous notes locally. You can only retrieve your notes if you have previously sync your notes to your Microsoft account (if you did previously sign in to Sticky Notes with your Microsoft account).

To uninstall and reinstall Sticky Notes in Windows 11, follow the steps below.

2. After uninstalling the app, to reinstall Sticky Notes, open Microsoft Store via taskbar or Start menu.

3. In the Microsoft Store window, use the search bar to search for “Microsoft Sticky Notes” and select it.

Wait until the troubleshooter finishes the initial analysis. The troubleshooter will then suggest you one or a few solutions. You can select a solution you want to apply and then repeat if it doesn’t resolve the Sticky Notes issue.

If none of the above works to resolve your Sticky Notes not working issue in Windows 11, you may want to consider switching to a third party sticky notes app. You can find plenty of them in the Microsoft Store.

Still, I was hesitant about trying it out an iPad (it also works on Android devices and Amazon’s Kindle Fire).

GoToMyPC lets you see and use a PC remotely, but viewing all of its contents on the relatively small iPad screen can strain your eyes.

I needn’t have worried: GotoMyPC’s iPad app seamlessly connected me to my home computer, allowing me to slide, tap, and touch the screen to access the files and applications I needed. The iPad’s smaller screen limits how much you can do with the contents of your PC, but GotoMyPC for iPad is incredibly useful nonetheless.


LogMeIn is another excellent remote access tool, but with its Cubby service, I might never need to use it. That’s because Cubby stores files and folders in the cloud and allows you to access them from various devices—like an iPad, if you install the free Cubby app. (Cubby itself is free for limited personal use; plans with additional features, including more storage and security, start at $4 per month.) The app is easy to use and lets you access files and folders and save them for offline viewing. The iPad does limit what you can do with all of the files in your Cubby, as you might expect. Still, it’s a handy way to access important files when you’re on the go.

Note Taker HD

Note Taker HD lets you write notes by hand, but your handwriting may benefit from using a stylus.

I spend a lot of time jotting notes on a notepad. Then, when I need to find what I’ve written, I’m left digging through piles of paper, often left with what I need written on a crumpled piece of paper, if I can find it at all. Enter Note Taker HD: this $5 iPad app lets me create handwritten notes in digital form, right on the iPad screen. You can write notes with your finger, but you’ll have more control if you invest in an iPad stylus. Note Taker HD also lets you enter text by typing, insert images and shapes, and annotate PDFs.  I like how you can organize multiples pages into one document and then store documents in folders. I may never have to dig around my bag for a crumpled notepad again.

Why Your Laptop Won’t Turn On And 9 Ways To Fix

Pressing the power button on your Windows laptop or desktop computer turns on the screen and keyboard backlight. However, a faulty power button, overheating, or a loose battery connection can prevent your laptop from turning on.

If your laptop doesn’t turn on when charging or on battery power, the troubleshooting steps below should get it working again.

1. Disconnect External Accessories

External devices and accessories (monitors, SD cards, USB drives, HDMI cables, etc.) can prevent your laptop from turning on. Unplug any accessory connected to your laptop and try turning it on again.

2. Check Indicator Lights for Hints

Pay attention to your laptop’s indicator light when you press the power button. The LED lights on some Dell and HP laptops blink in a programmed sequence to indicate possible battery or CPU failure.

A blinking LED light could also signal problems with your laptop’s Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) battery. Without the CMOS battery, the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) program can’t boot your laptop’s operating system.

Contact your laptop manufacturer if one or more of your device’s LED indicator lights blink intermittently when you press the power button. You could also check the manufacturer’s support website or instruction manual to learn what the diagnostic LED lights depict.

3. Charge the Laptop

Your laptop won’t turn on if it’s out of battery power. Charge your laptop from a wall outlet for 10-15 minutes and try turning it on again.

Counterfeit or knockoff power cables may not provide enough amperage or voltage to charge or boot your laptop. Hence, we recommend using the power supply that came with your laptop.

If your laptop’s power indicator doesn’t come on when connected to power, your charger is probably faulty.

A faulty wall outlet won’t charge or power on your laptop. Plug your power connector into a functional wall socket and ensure the connection isn’t loose.

If the wall socket powers other devices but your laptop, the power cord or adapter is either broken or unsupported. Buy replacement power accessories from your laptop manufacturer or authorized resellers.

4. Reinsert or Replace the Battery

Your laptop won’t turn on if its battery is bad or inserted incorrectly. Detach and reinsert your laptop battery if it’s removable. You can also try restoring your battery by freezing or recalibrating it. Replace the battery if it still doesn’t power your laptop.

5. Leave Your Laptop to Cool

Your laptop may shut down randomly and refuse to turn on if the battery, CPU, or other system components are overheating. It’s a thermal protection precaution to prevent hard disk failure or motherboard damage.

Place your laptop on a flat table and ensure nothing blocks the cooling vents. You could also use a cooling pad or external cooling fan to reduce your laptop’s temperature. Wait at least 30 minutes before turning your laptop back on.

If the overheating persists, your laptop’s internal fans could be broken or clogged. Refer to our tutorial on fixing laptop fan issues for troubleshooting solutions.

6. Increase Screen Brightness

Does your power indicator or keyboard backlight come on when you press the power button? Do you hear the fan spinning or whirling, but the display remains black or blank? Your laptop likely has a black screen because the display brightness is low or on the lowest level.

Press the brightness-up key on the top row of your keyboard to increase your laptop’s display brightness. Press the key repeatedly until your laptop’s display comes on.

7. Wake Your Laptop’s Screen

Windows has two keyboard shortcuts that can snap your laptop out of a blank or black screen. Try the keyboard shortcuts below if your laptop’s screen won’t come on when you press the power button.

Press the Windows key + P on your keyboard and wait a few seconds. The shortcut opens the Windows “Project” pane, where you can choose a presentation mode.

Ctrl + Alt + Del is another key combination that can wake a Windows computer screen. It reboots Windows and could help your laptop startup correctly.

The key combination opens a screen with several device management options if your laptop is stuck on a black screen.

8. Restart/Reset Your Graphics/Display Driver

If your laptop screen still doesn’t come on, there’s possibly a problem with your display adapter. Restarting the display adapter might fix the issue with your screen.

Disconnect all devices or accessories plugged into your laptop and press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.

Your laptop should make a beep, and the screen should come on in 5-10 seconds. Contact your laptop manufacturer or visit a repair shop to assess and replace the display/graphics adapter.

9. Fix Your Display Driver in Safe Mode

Does your laptop come on and immediately go back off? Boot into Safe Mode and update or reinstall your graphics/display drivers to fix the issue. Roll back the driver if your laptop stopped turning on after installing a driver update.

Note: If your laptop’s hard drive is encrypted, you’ll need your BitLocker key to enter Safe Mode. For more information, refer to our tutorial on finding BitLocker recovery keys in Windows.

Having trouble organizing or finding the notes you need? With Smart Folders in Apple Notes, you can set up folders that automatically include specific notes. This gives you a great way to stay organized and on top of the notes you need most. So, let’s take a look at how you can create and use Smart Folders on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

What are Smart Folders in Notes?

As mentioned, you can create a Smart Folder that contains certain notes automatically. To do so, you set up a filter (condition) like a tag, date, or locked note. When the condition is met for a particular note, it pops into the Smart Folder. This gives you a convenient spot to quickly access the notes you need.

Uses of Smart Folders in the Notes app

View all notes for the current day, each day of the week.

See pinned notes that contain specific tags.

Gather notes that were created or edited in a certain date range.

Access notes that you share with particular contacts.

See notes with specific types of attachments like photos, videos, or documents.

Collect notes that contain checklists, including checked or unchecked items.

If you’re ready to set up your own Smart Folder, let’s get to it!

How to create a Smart Folder in Notes on iPhone and iPad

Launch the Notes app on your iPhone.

Select an account and tap the New Folder icon on the bottom left.

Next to Include notes matching, use the drop-down box to pick All or Any depending on if you want to match all of the filters or just a few of them.

As an example, we’ll select Shared and With Specific People. At the top, below Enabled Filters, you’ll see an option to Select People.

You’ll then see the Smart Folder in your list for you to select and view the contents.

Convert a normal folder to a Smart Folder on iPhone and iPad

Maybe you have an ordinary folder in Notes that you’d like to turn into a Smart Folder. Once you convert the folder, you’ll see all notes inside contain a tag with the folder name.

Keep in mind you cannot convert a Smart Folder to an ordinary folder, so be sure you want to change the folder type before you follow these steps.

Open a simple folder and then tap the three dots at the top.

Pick Convert to Smart Folder.

Confirm by choosing Convert at the bottom or Cancel if you change your mind.

Edit a Smart Folder on iPhone and iPad

If you’d like to change your Smart Folder, you can edit it easily. This includes folders you convert to Smart Folders.

Select the folder and tap the three dots at the top.

You can then sort or group the notes within the folder or choose Edit Smart Folder for the other changes below.

To rename the folder, simply enter the new name.

To adjust the filter(s), pick Manage Smart Folder, make your changes, and tap Done to save them.

Delete a Smart Folder on iPhone and iPad

You can remove a Smart Folder you no longer use in Notes. The notes in the folder don’t get deleted but remain in their original location(s). It’s only the Smart Folder container that’s removed.

On the main Folders screen, either slide the folder name from right to left and tap the Delete icon (trash can) or long-press the folder and pick Delete.

How to create a Smart Folder in Notes on Mac

Like on an iPhone or iPad, you can create a Smart Folder in Notes on Mac easily, albeit with a few changes.

Launch the Notes app on Mac.

Give your Smart Folder a name at the top of the pop-up box. You should see the Make into a Smart Folder box checked for you.

Convert a folder to a Smart Folder on Mac

Start with one of the following:

Select the three dots to the right of the name and pick Convert to Smart Folder.

Edit a Smart Folder on Mac

After you create a Smart Folder, you can make adjustments to it just like on iPhone and iPad. 

To change the filter(s) for the Smart Folder, pick Edit Smart Folder. Then, make your adjustments and select OK to save them.

Delete a Smart Folder on Mac

If you no longer want to use a Smart Folder you’ve created, you can delete it easily. Remember, this does not delete the folder’s notes.

Do one of the following:

Select the three dots to the right of the name and pick Delete Folder.

The Task Scheduler app lets you automate tasks in Windows. It allows you to run a program or a script at the times you specify. Follow these steps to make Sticky Notes run at Startup using Task Scheduler in Windows 11:

On the next screen, copy-paste the following text in the Program/script field:


Note: There have been many improvements in the Sticky Notes app in recent versions of Windows. It is now distributed as a Microsoft Store app, rather than the classic desktop app. So you won’t be able to locate the Sticky Notes EXE file on your system. However, you can use the shell:AppsFolder command to view all installed applications on your Windows 11/10 PC. The above command opens the Applications folder in the Windows File Explorer.

3] Edit Windows Registry

You can also make Sticky Notes open on Startup in Windows 11 by modifying Windows Registry. Here’s how:

Note: Create a system restore point before you make any changes to the registry.

Registry Editor will open up. Navigate to the following path:


If the Value data was already set as 1, change it to 0, restart the PC, then again change it back to 1.

Exit the Registry Editor and reboot your PC. All your notes should now appear on your desktop screen.
