Some users have said their Finder icon has disappeared and is missing from the Dock on their Mac. In this article, I explain what you can do to bring Finder back to your Dock. The Finder icon in the Dock can let you easily open a Finder window. Although there are a number of other ways to access Finder on Mac, you may still want it in the Dock for the convenience. As you can see in the screenshot below, instead of the Finder icon, there is an empty space.

What is Finder?

Finder is an app built into the macOS system. Apple calls this app Finder because it helps you find things like files, folders, and apps on your Mac. With Finder you can access your disks and iCloud Drive. The Finder not only lets you find things, but also helps you keep your files and folders organized. As stated above, there are a few different ways to open a new Finder window:

Bring back the missing Finder icon

Try these steps. After completing each step, restart your Mac:

Before continuing the steps below, restart your Mac first and ensure that you are running the latest version of macOS. That may be enough to fix the missing Finder icon problem.

Relaunch Finder

Try force-quitting Finder and relaunching it. This is like restarting Finder, and it may fix the issue. Here is how:

Unfreeze the Dock

Sometimes the Dock may freeze and become unresponsive, causing this problem. You can try the following tips to get the Dock working again:

Restart the Dock

Let us start with restarting the Dock. Here is how:

killall Dock

This will restart the Dock immediately. Does the Finder icon come back? If not continue:

Reset the Dock

If restarting does not work, reset it. You should realize that this is a reset, and doing this will reset the Dock back to its default settings. Here is how:

Open Terminal.

Enter the following command and hit enter:

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

Check to see if the Finder icon exists

Let us go and see if the icon really exists. Here is how:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/

You should see two finder png icons: “finder.png” and “[email protected].” The first one is for non-retina, and the other is for retina displays.

If the icons are present, clear the Dock’s icon cache. Here is how:

/private/var/folders/

    You will see a few folders. Enter com.apple.dock.iconcache in the search field and hit enter.

    Ensure that the “folders” option is selected for the search (see screenshot below).

    You will see a file called com.apple.dock.iconcache. Drag this to the Trash.

      Now we will force the Dock to rebuild this cache.

      Open Terminal, then enter the following code and hit enter.

      killall Dock

      This will restart the Dock. Do you see the Finder icon now?

      Safe Mode

      Restart your Mac in Safe Mode. Do you see the icon in Safe Mode? No matter your answer, exit Safe Mode by restarting your Mac normally, then check again for the icon.

      Clear macOS’s icon cache

      If the issue continues, you may be having a cache problem. Let us clear the cache. Here is how:

      Open Terminal.

      Enter the following code and hit enter. It is a big command, so you will want to copy and paste it. You will be asked to enter your admin password after entering the command:

      sudo rm -rfv /Library/Caches/com.apple.iconservices.store; sudo find /private/var/folders/ ( -name com.apple.dock.iconcache -or -name com.apple.iconservices ) -exec rm -rfv {} ; ; sleep 3;sudo touch /Applications/* ; killall Dock; killall Finder

      Hopefully, one of the steps above has brought back the missing Finder icon. If not, you can contact Apple support via live chat, or maybe take your Mac to an Apple Store to diagnose and fix the issue.

      Many Google Drive users share their files. Google Drive users in organizations share files on shared team drives that include members with different access permissions. Content within a shared drive is collectively owned by members of the drive.

      When a shared drive file disappears, a member has usually deleted it. However, users might sometimes need to restore deleted files on shared drives.

      Admin users can restore erased files on shared GD drives for 25 days after they’ve been deleted.

      Can files disappear from Google Drive?

      Shared Google Drive files also disappear for owners when they become orphaned files.

      That can happen when a non-owner of a shared file deletes it. Then the orphaned file disappears, but it still exists for the owner. File owners can recover missing orphaned files with Google Drive’s search tool.

      So, there are two alternative solutions for recovering shared Google Drive files that disappear. This is how you can recover deleted files on shared drives and shared orphaned files.

      How do I recover a shared file in Google Drive? 1. Use the Google Admin console

      Users can also find and fix orphaned Google Drive files with the GAT+ G Suite add-on. That’s an audit tool for G Suite apps that only admin users can install from the GAT+ page.

      The above solutions will often restore shared Google Drive files that have disappeared. If you know a shared GD drive file has been deleted, try restoring it with the first resolution.

      If you’re not sure what’s happened to a shared file, you might need to find an orphaned file as outlined for the second resolution.

      Laptop Keeps Disconnecting From Wifi? How To Fix It

      Your laptop’s Wi-Fi internet connection will be strong as it keeps receiving a signal from the router. If this signal gets interrupted, your internet connection will suffer as the laptop disconnects from the Wi-Fi.

      The PC might suffer disconnecting Wi-Fi issues due to multiple reasons. Perhaps the laptop is far from the router, or the router itself is not sending a strong signal. There are also cases where an outdated network adapter driver causes the laptop to disconnect from Wi-Fi.

      However, these are not the only reasons why your laptop disconnects from a wireless internet connection. No matter the cause, a straightforward solution would be to move the computer close to the router. This will fix any issues caused due to weak internet connection.

      If this does not work, you can try the solution mentioned below in the article.

      Before we jump into the solutions, let us look at a few of the causes that may be causing the Wi-Fi issue on your laptop. One of the common reasons why this happens is when multiple devices connect to a router. 

      Depending on the router you use, it will support hundreds of devices. However, as the number of devices increases, the router’s range decreases. This might be why your laptop keeps disconnecting from the internet.

      Weak wireless connection

      Outdated network adapter driver

      Corrupted system file

      An issue with the router

      Bad router placement

      First, make sure that you restart your router and your PC. Sometimes, an error or complication in the laptop’s network adapter or the router itself could be causing the issue. A simple restart will refresh the system, fixing any deadlock situation the devices might have encountered.

      If the above-mentioned generic fixes do not work, here are some simple steps that might fix the issue with the laptop’s internet.

      The troubleshooter feature in Windows scans your entire system for possible issues and changes necessary settings to fix any errors that it finds. You can find multiple troubleshooting options for different components on your PC. One such troubleshooter is the internet and the Network Adapter troubleshooter.

      These troubleshooters scan for errors in network configurations and internet connections. If the troubleshooter finds any error, it will change specific settings in the network adapter so that the PC does not run into these issues.

      To run the Internet and network adapter troubleshooter,

      The Wi-Fi adapter on your PC is responsible for detecting the correct Wi-Fi signal and connecting to it. Sometimes, the Wi-Fi adapter will not function as it should for various reasons like driver/system file errors.

      In this case, you can restart your Wi-Fi adapter. Restarting the Wi-Fi adapter will let the adapter refresh the driver/system files, which might fix any issues with the internet.

      To restart the Wi-Fi Adapter.

      Wi-Fi sense is a unique feature in Windows that lets the system choose the Wi-Fi network with a strong signal. However, the system will automatically connect to a different network even if you already have a stable connection on one network. 

      If you have issues with a laptop where the Wi-Fi network keeps disconnecting, try disabling Wi-Fi sense through Settings.

      Note: You may not find these settings if you are using Windows 10 version 1803 or higher.

      Resetting network configuration resets both the TCP stack and the DNS. By resetting the network configuration, all the network’s configurations will be set to default. Therefore, if a wrong network configuration was causing the problem, resetting the network configuration should be the laptop’s internet issue.

      Reset Using Windows Settings Using Command Prompt

      In windows, computers can turn off specific hardware components connected to it in order to save power. If you have enabled this setting, the computer can turn off devices that are currently idle. 

      Sometimes, if the network adapter is not sending or receiving data for a prolonged duration, the PC can mistake the network driver for being idle and unresponsive. If this happens, the PC will turn off this device.

      If that’s the case for you, you will need to disable this feature.

      When a PC connects to a VPN, the application creates a virtual network between a PC and the server. However, the connection is not strong when you use VPN to access the internet.

      Your internet speed usually decreases when you use a VPN to access the internet. You may see this happen, especially if you are using VPN software that is not optimized. Besides decreased internet speed, you may also face connectivity issues when using these types of VPN software. 

      To fix this, disable the VPN and try connecting to a wireless network.

      When you forget a wireless network, the PC will delete all its network information, such as the password or network configuration. It could also be that the laptop is disconnecting due to congestion. 

      To forget your Wi-Fi,

      The distance between the router and the laptop highly affects the connection strength between them. Besides distance, obstacles such as wood, cement, or even plastic affect Wi-Fi strength.

      Therefore, if you have multiple obstacles between the laptop and the router, Wi-Fi will most likely keep disconnecting. To ensure this is not the case, move close to the router and check if the computer keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi.

      If moving close to the router still does not fix the issue, there is probably something wrong with the router itself. To check your router, you can use an ethernet cable. 

      An ethernet cable allows a physical connection between the router and the PC. By doing this, you will remove any complications caused due to the router’s Wi-Fi signal transmitter. 

      The network driver on your PC is responsible for smooth communication between the computer’s OS and the network adapter. Failing to update these drivers may cause issues when the OS tries to use the network adapter.

      To fix this type of issue, we recommend that you keep your drivers up-to-date.

      Router manufacturers keep updating their devices with patches and firmware updates. These updates may fix technical bugs and even bring security upgrades to the router. If it is a firmware issue that is causing the laptop to disconnect from the Wi-Fi, updating the firmware may fix any issues with the router.

      To update the router’s firmware,

      Enter your router’s configuration.

      Navigate through the settings to find firmware update options.

      Note: Router’s configuration will differ depending on your router. If you do not find the desired settings, you can navigate to the router manufacturer’s official site and check if your router has any firmware updates.

      The laptop keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi could also be due to a bug in Windows. This is why Microsoft keeps providing their users with Windows Updates. 

      If none of the solutions work, you can update your Windows to see if it fixes the disconnecting issue on your laptop.

      The Dock In Watchos 3 Breathes New Life Into The Apple Watch

      The Dock in watchOS 3 was arguably the biggest new feature to hit the Apple Watch at WWDC 2024. It’s a feature that allows you to find and switch to your most used apps. It takes the best of the Glances model from previous versions of watchOS and merges it with an updated and actionable interface.

      The Dock promotes using apps in a way that no such feature on the Apple Watch has until now. In my opinion, it breathes new life into the Apple Watch, providing practical functionality that was missing in previous iterations of watchOS.       Out with Friends, in with Dock

      In versions of watchOS prior to watchOS 3, the physical Side button that rests below the Digital Crown was used for invoking the Friends carousel. In watchOS 3, the Friends carousel has been supplanted by the Dock. This is a fundamental change in the way the Apple Watch works, and is a surefire sign that Apple is willing to pivot when it comes to features on a platform that’s still fresh and malleable.

      Reassigning the Side button to the Dock provides an immense improvement in overall function and practicality. I, for one, never used the Friends interface, and I felt that such a precious hardware button was wasted by using it that way. With watchOS 3, the Side button has been reassigned to a feature that’s truly worthy of a physical hardware button, and that’s speaks volumes considering that there are only two buttons on the Apple Watch.

      Upgraded Glances

      In previous versions of watchOS, swiping up from the bottom of the screen while on the watch face revealed a list of Glances — cards that provided quick summaries of information pertaining to apps and system-level details.

      Glances have been replaced in watchOS 3, but the overall idea of Glances hasn’t been removed; it’s been improved. And unlike Glances, which were only accessible via the watch face, the Dock can be invoked from anywhere on the watchOS interface.

      Virtually everything about Glances is now achievable via the Dock, and provides a more reliable and consistent interface for gleaning quick details about apps, having access to your most recently used app, and launching apps.

      The Dock isn’t perfect yet, and there are still some issues that need to be worked out with features like the Now Playing interface, but as the watchOS 3 beta progresses, it should get better over time.

      Background App Refresh

      All of the apps placed in the Dock are kept in a suspended state in memory and are ready to launch at a user’s request. Once the user settles in on one of the apps in the Dock, it will be automatically resumed, even while it’s still shrunk down in the Dock. In the meantime, a snapshot of its last state is displayed.

      This is where the new background app refresh APIs come into play. Background app refresh APIs make it possible to update snapshots, which provide updated information to the user, even if just looking at an app in the Dock without fully switching to it. You can see examples of this with some of Apple’s stock apps. For instance, the Timer app will countdown the amount of time remaining while shrunken in the Dock.

      It’s even possible for Dock snapshots to differ from the information provided once a user taps and opens the full associated app. This could be handy for presenting more “glanceable” views while perusing the dock, but providing more detailed information when a user switches to the app in question.

      Invoking the Dock

      To invoke the Dock in watchOS 3, simply press the Side button. The great thing about having a physical button assigned to the Dock is that it allows you to access it from anywhere: at the watch face, while inside apps, etc.

      The Dock features a card interface that represents all of the apps you have stored there, along with the most recent app that you’ve used.

      You can use swipe gestures or the Digital Crown to navigate through the Dock. To switch to a particular app in the Dock, tap on the app that you wish to open.

      Adding apps to the Dock

      The whole point of the Dock is to allow users to add and access frequently used apps. To add an app to the dock, do the following:

      Step 1: Open the app that you wish to add

      Step 2: Press the Side button to open the Dock

      Step 3: Swipe up on the most recent app card, which should be the app you opened in step 1

      Step 4: Tap Keep in Dock

      Once you add an app to the dock, it will stay there until you remove it. Up to 10 apps can be added to the dock, along with the most recently used app.

      Note: You can also manage Dock apps via the Watch app on your paired iPhone.

      Removing apps from the Dock

      To remove apps from the Dock, perform the following:

      Step 1: Press the Side button to open the Dock

      Step 2: Navigate to the app card you wish to remove

      Step 3: Swipe up on the app card

      Step 4: Tap the Remove button

      Rearranging apps in the Dock Conclusion

      As the watchOS 3 beta progresses, it’ll be interesting to see how the Dock is refined and improved. Apple already has an excellent start with the Dock’s initial implementation, but there is room for improvement.

      I’d like to see the ability to switch to the Dock and select an app using only hardware buttons. You can already scroll through the list of apps with the Digital Crown, but you have to tap the screen to select an app from the Dock.

      I’d also like to see an improved Now Playing interface, perhaps even making it a standalone app.

      But even with those opportunities for improvement, the Dock is already far and away my favorite software feature of the Apple Watch. Launching, monitoring, and switching between apps now makes a lot more sense thanks to the Dock in watchOS 3.

      How To Create Reminders From The Google Search

      As if it was so hard to create reminders in Google Now, the company now lets you create new reminders right off the search function. Reminders have been like a boon for those who are overloaded with work and often miss things that they were supposed to do. But with this function built into your device and on your Google account, you will no longer miss any task that you are supposed to do.

      In order to create a reminder, all you need to do is type in a simple query with a specific syntax in the search box on Google. And this will result in you having your reminder created in your Google account.

      Note: For this to work, you must be already logged in to your Google account, and you should have Google Now turned ON on your Android/iOS/Chrome browser. One more thing, this only works in the Chrome web browser.

      As of this writing, this feature only works for Google Search in English.

      If you are wondering how you could go about enabling Google Now on your device, here’s how you can do that:

      Enabling Google Now on your Device

      1. Tap on Google app in your App Drawer.

      2. Press the Menu button and tap on “Settings”. It will open up the Google Now settings on your screen.

      3. On the screen that follows, you will see an option saying “Google Now.” Make sure the text next to it says “ON.” If it does not, tap on it and it will be enabled.

      4. And you are done.

      Awesome! The Google Now feature is now enabled on your device.

      If you want to enable the same in your Chrome browser, here’s how you can do that:

      1. Open Chrome on your computer. Make sure you are signed in to your Google account. If you are not, do so now.

      4. Check the box that says “Google Now.” It will enable the Google Now functionality in your browser.

      5. You are all set.

      Great! Since the Google Now feature is now enabled in your Chrome, you can follow the rest of the procedure given below to create reminders.

      Here’s how you can go about creating reminders from the Google Search.

      Create Reminders from the Google Search

      1. Head over to the Google homepage using any of your web browsers.

      2. Type in a query that indicates a task and a time, for example, “remind me to buy milk at 5pm tomorrow“, and hit the Search button.

      3. It should then show you the summary of the reminder that you are about to create. You can make any modifications in the reminder now. Once you are done, hit the link that says “Remind me on Google Now.”

      4. A confirmation message should appear on your screen saying that the reminder has been created and you will be reminded by Google Now on your device.

      5. You are done.

      And that’s it.
