How To Set A Static Ip Address In Windows 11/10

If you are experiencing trouble with your network connection and have it configured to DHCP then, figuring out your IP address can be quite a task. Using Static IP Address helps avert IP address conflicts between networked devices and enables their easy management. This article will show you how to assign a static IP address on a Windows 11/10 computer.

Assign a static IP address in Windows 11/10

In most cases, the IP addresses for PCs or computers are automatically configured to Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) by the respective router. This is useful as the devices connect to your network instantly. You save the trouble of manually configuring the IP address for each new device yourself. However, there’s one shortfall associated with the process – The device’s IP address can change from time to time.

Setting a static IP may be required if you regularly share files, share a printer, or when configuring Port forwarding. We will see four methods to do it:

Via Control Panel

Via Windows Settings

Using PowerShell

Using Command Prompt.

1] Setting a static IP address via Control Panel

From the list of 2 options displayed, select the latter one – Open Network and Internet settings.

Instantly, a separate window will open and direct you to the Network Connections section of the Control Panel.

After that, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) seen under ‘Networking’ tab and hit the ‘Properties’ button.

Switch the selector to ‘Use the following IP address’.

IP address (Find it using ipconfig /all command)

Subnet Mask (On a home network, it is 255.255.255.0)

Default Gateway (It is your router’s IP address.)

In the end, do not forget to check ‘Validate settings upon exit’ option. It helps Windows to quickly check your new IP address and other relevant information to ensure that it works.

If all looks good, press the ‘OK’ button and close out of the network adapter’s properties window.

2] Assign Static IP Address via Settings Windows 11

Select Network & Internet from the side panel on the left and expand the Wi-Fi menu.

Select your current connection, i.e., the network to which you are connected.

Now, when the ‘IP settings’ window pops up, hit the drop-down arrow and select the ‘Manual’ option.

Slide the toggle next to IPv4 to the On position.

Now, set the static IP address. Also, set the Subnet prefix length (subnet mask). If your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then the subnet prefix length in bits is 24.

Once done, configure the Default Gateway address, Preferred DNS address, and Save the changes.

Windows 10

Scroll down to IP settings section and hit the Edit button.

Then, when the ‘IP settings’ window pops up, hit the drop-down arrow and select ‘Manual‘ option.

Turn on the IPv4 toggle switch.

Now, set the static IP address. Also, set the Subnet prefix length (subnet mask). If your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then the subnet prefix length in bits is 24.

Once done, configure the Default Gateway address, Preferred DNS address and Save the changes.

3] Assigning Static IP Address via PowerShell

Open Powershell as Administrator and enter the following command to view your current network configuration-

Get-NetIPConfiguration

Following this, note down the following information:

InterfaceIndex

IPv4Address

IPv4DefaultGateway

DNSServer.

After that, enter the following command to set a static IP address and press Enter.

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 15 -IPAddress 192.168.29.34 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.29.1.

Now, change DefaultGateway with the default gateway address of your network. Make sure to change the InterfaceIndex number with the one corresponding to your adapter and IPAddress with the IP address you want to assign to your device.

When done, Type the following command to assign a DNS server address and press Enter.

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 4 -ServerAddresses 10.1.2.1

Save the changes and exit.

4] Assign a Static IP Address using Command Prompt

To set a static IP address in Windows 10 using a command prompt, follow the below suggestions:

Type cmd in the text box and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter keyboard shortcut to run the Command Prompt with administrative privileges.

In the Command Prompt window, type in the following text code:

ipconfig /all

When you press the enter key, it will show all the current network configuration.

Under the network adapter, write down the following information:

IPv4 Address

Subnet Mask

Default Gateway

DNS Server.

After that, execute the following command to set a new static IP address:

netsh interface ip set address name="Ethernet0" static ip_address subnet_mask default_gateway

In the above command-line, make sure to change Ethernet0 with the name of your current network adapter.

Also, replace the “ip_address subnet_mask default_gateway” the correct values for your case.

Again, type the following command and hit enter to set a DNS server address:

netsh interface ip set dns name="Ethernet0" static dns_server

In the above command-line, replace Ethernet0 with the name of your current network adapter. Also, change dns_server with the correct values of your DNS Servers.

After running the above commands, type exit and press Enter to close the Command Prompt.

I hope this helps.

What is Static IP connection?

A static IP as the name suggests is an IP address that remains fixed and never changes. So, once your device is assigned a static IP address, its number typically stays the same until the device is decommissioned or your network architecture changes. Static IP addresses are mainly used by servers or other important equipment.

What is Static IP used for?

A static IP address offers convenient remote access which makes it easier to work remotely using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or other remote access programs. Besides, it enables more reliable communication [use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for teleconferencing or other voice and video communications].

How To Fix The “Failed To Obtain Ip Address” Error On Android

“Failed to Obtain IP Address” is a common network error you might experience on your Android phone. This error occurs when your phone can’t acquire an IP address from your router. This is often an issue on your router, but sometimes your phone can be the problem.

A failed DHCP server, minor network glitches, problematic cache files, and MAC address filtering are the most common causes of the issue. We’ll walk you through the steps to potentially resolve your network problem.

Table of Contents

Reboot Your Router

Your router’s minor glitches are often why your devices can’t acquire an IP address. This usually results in a “Failed to Obtain IP Address” error on an Android phone.

One way to get around these minor problems is to restart your router. Doing so turns off your router’s features, including DHCP that assigns IP addresses, and restarts all these functions.

You can power off your Wi-Fi router by pressing the Power button on the device. If your router offers no Power button, use the power socket switch to turn your router off and then back on.

Turn Airplane Mode On and Back Off to Resolve the Obtain IP Address Error

When you experience a network problem like “Failed to Obtain IP Address,” it’s worth turning your phone’s airplane mode on and then back off. Doing so disconnects your phone from all your networks and then reconnects to all networks. This should fix most minor network problems with your device.

You can enable airplane mode by pulling down from the top of your phone’s screen and selecting Airplane mode. Then, wait for five seconds and turn the mode back off by tapping the Airplane mode tile.

After enabling and disabling airplane mode, your phone should successfully connect to your network.

Forget and Reconnect to the Wi-Fi Network

If you still get a “Failed to Obtain IP Address” error on your Android phone, try forgetting and rejoining your Wi-Fi network. This resolves any saved network configuration problems.

Back on the Wi-Fi screen, select your wireless network.

Type your network’s password and choose Connect at the bottom.

Your phone will acquire an IP address and successfully connect to your network.

Clear the Google Play Services Cache on Android

Google Play Services is an Android utility that provides core functionality to your installed apps and system functions. When you experience system-level problems, like “Failed to Obtain IP Address,” it’s worth clearing this utility’s cache files.

The cache files may have gone corrupt or become problematic for various reasons. Clearing the files should likely resolve your problem and let you successfully connect to your wireless networks.

Choose Clear cache to clear the utility’s cache files.

Restart your phone, and connect your phone to your network.

Use a Static IP Address on Your Android Phone

Your Android phone receives a unique IP address from your router’s DHCP feature. If that feature ever stops working or becomes problematic, your phone gets no IP address, resulting in a “Failed to Obtain IP Address” error.

One way to potentially fix that is to use a static IP on your Android phone. This way, your phone already knows what IP to use when you connect your phone to your wireless network.

Here’s how to configure a static IP on Android:

Expand the Advanced options menu and choose Static from the IP settings menu.

Enter 192.168.1.20 in the IP address field, 192.168.1.1 (your router’s IP address) in the Gateway field, 8.8.8.8 in the DNS 1 field, and 8.8.4.4 in the DNS 2 field. Then, tap Save to save your settings.

Try connecting your phone to your Wi-Fi network.

Turn Off MAC Filter for Your MAC Address

Most routers offer a MAC address filtering option that you can use to block specific devices from connecting to your network. Your Android phone displaying a “Failed to Obtain IP Address” error could result from your phone being on the MAC filter list.

This is an unlikely scenario, especially if you’ve never blocked any MAC addresses on your router, but it’s worth checking just in case. You’ll have to review your MAC block list and remove your Android phone from there. Once you’ve done that, your phone will connect to your network and get an IP address.

Access your router’s settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in your web browser’s address bar. This is the most common IP address to access a router’s settings page, but this may not work with all routers. Consult your router’s manual if this IP address doesn’t open the settings page.

Select Wireless Settings at the top of the router’s settings page. Your router might be using a different name for this option, but it should be similar enough for you to locate it. If your router options don’t appear at the top, they might be in the left or right sidebar on the settings page.

Note: We’re using an iball 300M MIMO Wireless-N router in our examples. Your router’s interface will look different, but you should see a category for accessing wireless configuration that features the same settings we’re covering in this article.

Choose Wireless MAC Filtering from the sidebar on the left.

Select your Wi-Fi network in the Select SSID field, choose Disable in the MAC Address Filter menu, and select OK.

Connect your Android phone to your wireless network.

Change the Encryption Method to WPA2-PSK for Your Network

Most routers offer multiple encryption methods to secure your network. Sometimes, some of these methods aren’t compatible with your Android phone, thus causing the “Failed to Obtain IP Address” error.

In this case, change your router’s wireless security mode to something widely compatible, like WPA2-PSK. That should resolve your issue.

Open your router’s settings page, usually located at 192.168.1.1, in your web browser. Again, this is the most common IP address to open a router’s settings page. If this doesn’t work for you, consult your router’s manual book to find the correct IP address.

Select Wireless Settings at the top. If you don’t see this option, it might be called something different on your router, but it should be something similar. Also, look for the option in the left or right sidebar if you don’t find it at the top.

Choose Wireless Security from the sidebar on the left.

Select WPA2-PSK in the Security Mode drop-down menu on the right.

Select OK at the bottom to save your settings.

Reset Network Settings on Your Android Phone

If your Android phone still displays a “Failed to Obtain IP Address” error, your phone’s network settings likely have issues. You can fix these settings by performing a network reset.

A network reset erases all your network-related settings and allows you to re-configure them. Here’s how you can do that.

Choose Reset settings.

Connect your phone to your Wi-Fi network when your settings are reset.

Make Your Android Device Successfully Acquire an IP Address

Android’s “Failed to Obtain IP Address” error prevents you from accessing the internet on your phone. If you ever experience this issue and struggle to get an IP address for your phone, try out the methods outlined above.

How To Find Your Printer’S Ip Address On Windows Or A Mac

Whether configuring your printer, troubleshooting an issue, or attempting to connect to a network, it’s very handy to know how to find your printer’s IP address. Thankfully it’s very easy to do, and there are several ways to do it on both PC and Mac. We’ll run you through each of them in this quick guide.

Before you start working it out through your computer, it’s worth checking the printer itself first. If your printer has an LCD display then you can probably navigate to the settings menu and find an option to display the printer IP address. We’ll go over four possible methods of finding the IP address if you’ve already tried this.

How to find your printer’s IP address in Windows

The exact instructions for finding your printer’s IP address in Windows might vary slightly depending on whether you’re on Windows 10 or Windows 11. But we’re mainly talking about names of menus and things like that. The steps are essentially the same.

In the Control Panel

Start by navigating to the control panel. There are a couple of ways to do this:

Hold the Windows key on the keyboard and press i to open the control panel.

Select the printer for which you want to find the IP address from the list of printers.

The printer’s IP address should be listed next to the Location field.

How to find your printer’s IP in your Router’s admin panel

Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

The steps to find your printer’s IP address in your router’s admin panel may vary slightly depending on the brand and model of your router. The steps will generally be along these lines:

Open a web browser on a device connected to the same network as your printer.

Type your router’s IP address in the address bar and hit enter.

You will be prompted to enter the login credentials for your router. Enter your username and password to log in to the admin panel.

Navigate to the Devices or Attached devices section of your router’s admin panel. This section may be located under a LAN or Network tab.

Look for your printer’s name or MAC address in the list of connected devices. The IP address of the printer should be listed next to it.

You may need to refer to your router’s manual to determine its IP address. It will also be one of the IP addresses listed when you type ipconfig into the Windows Command Prompt, as outlined above. There are some common default gateway addresses, including 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.2.1, and 10.0.0.1.

How to find your printer’s IP by printing the network configuration page

Mark O’Neill / Android Authority

Another option for finding your printer’s IP address involves returning to the printer itself. We mentioned in the intro that you might be able to find the IP address on a printer’s LCD display, but you can also get the printer’s IP by printing the network configuration page.

You’ll get precise instructions on how to do this from the printer’s user manual, as every model and brand will be slightly different. But broadly, the steps will be along these lines:

An IP address on a printer is a unique numerical identifier that is assigned to the printer to enable it to communicate on a network. The IP address allows other devices on the network to locate and communicate with the printer.

Yes, you can change the IP address of your printer. Most printers allow you to change the IP address manually through the control panel or menu. Alternatively, you can assign a static IP address to your printer using your network’s DHCP server.

The default IP address for a printer can vary depending on the manufacturer and model of the printer. Generally, printers do not have a standard default IP address across all devices. However, many printers are configured to obtain an IP address automatically through Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) when connected to a network.

If the IP address of your printer is not working, it may be because the printer has been assigned a new IP address by the DHCP server on your network. Try printing a new configuration or network status page to find the printer’s new IP address.
