Suggested March 2024 Google: “Hard To Call A Site Authoritative After 30 Articles”

That’s especially true if the site has stopped publishing new content for a while.

Mueller says this in response to a Reddit thread asking why new articles for an “authoritative” site aren’t being indexed.

The original poster (OP) of the thread says they’ve published 30+ articles on their site, and believes it to be authoritative because of the links it’s receiving.

After a three-month hiatus between publishing new articles, Google isn’t indexing the new content as quickly as it did in the past.

OP asks why some URLs aren’t getting indexed even after a manual submission.

Mueller responds with a rude awakening for OP, saying it’s difficult for Google to see their site as an authority with only a few dozen articles.

Google’s John Mueller On Authoritative Sites

Mueller begins his response by clarifying there’s nothing wrong with Google’s indexing systems at the moment.

Indexing bugs do occur from time to time, but that’s not the problem in this case.

Rather, this is a case of Google being selective about what it’s indexing.

With the site having relatively few articles, coupled with the fact it hasn’t published new content in several months, Google is going to be more critical about what it indexes when the site starts publishing again.

“I don’t see anything broken in the way Google indexes stuff at the moment. I do see us being critical about what we pick up for indexing though, as any search engine should.

It’s really hard to call a site authoritative after 30 articles, and especially if you’ve stopped publishing for a while, I can see how Google might be a bit more conservative with regards to indexing more.”

Indexing may pick up over time when Google sees that the site has more to offer searchers than 30 pages of content.

Other than continuing to publish new content, there’s nothing the OP can do to move the process along any faster.

“Over time, as we see that your site is more than just “30 ok posts”, and instead something we’re keen on sending as many users to as possible, then indexing will pick up.

This isn’t something you can push through technical means though, it’s not the button-push before indexing that makes your site by far the best of its kind.”

Mueller concludes his response by encouraging the OP to aim higher in every regard.

These days it’s not enough for a site to be just as good as other sites on the web. It has to be significantly better.

“Making your site “just as good / bad as others” is not compelling — you should really aim significantly higher, and not just with regards to the text on your pages, but in regards to everything across your site, and its embedding within the rest of the world / web.”

There are two key takeaways from this exchange.

One is that a site is unlikely to be viewed as an authority with only 30 pages.

The second is that Google may slow down indexing for a site after it learns where the site fits in with the rest of the web.

It’s normal for Google’s indexing patterns to fluctuate, and even manual submission won’t guarantee a page gets indexed.

How To Add 30 Minutes To A Javascript Date Object?

In this tutorial, we will learn how to add 30 minutes to a JavaScript Date object. Here we will discuss two methods which are following.

Using the setMinutes( ) Method

Using the getTime() Method

Using the setMinutes Method

The setMinutes() function of the date object accepts an integer representing the Minutes and replaces the value of the Minutes in the current date with it.

Syntax Date.setMinutes(min, sec, ms); Parameter

min − An integer between 0 and 59, representing the minutes.

sec − An integer between 0 and 59, representing the seconds. If you specify the sec parameter, you must also specify the min.

ms − A number between 0 and 999, representing the milliseconds. If you specify the ms parameter, you must also specify the min and sec.

Approach

To add 30 minutes into the Date object using the setMinutes method first we get the value of minutes of the current time using getMinutes( ) method and then add 30 into it and pass the added value to the setMinutes( ) method.

Example

In this example, we are adding 30 Minutes to the current time/time.

Using the getTime( ) Method

JavaScript date getTime() method returns the numeric value corresponding to the time for the specified date according to universal time. The value returned by the getTime() method is the number of milliseconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00.

Syntax Date.getTime() Approach

To add 30 minutes to the Date Object first, we get the current time by using the Date.getTime( ) method and then add 30 minute’s milliseconds value (30 * 60 * 1000) to it and pass the added value to the Date Object.

Example

In this example we are adding 30 minutes to the current time using the getTime() method.

How To Record A Call On Iphone And Android

Being able to record a call may come in handy in a number of situations. Perhaps you’re interviewing someone over the phone or on a work call and want to ensure that you can remember everything that is being discussed. Depending on whether you’re using an iOS or Android device, you have several options available to you. This post details how to start recording your phone calls whether you’re using an iPhone or Android.

Tip: is your iPhone not ringing when you’re getting a call? We show you what to do to fix this annoying issue.

Is It Legal to Record Phone Calls?

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of recording phone calls, we need to first talk about the legal aspect. In the U.S., different states have varying laws when it comes to recording phone calls. The same applies to European countries and beyond. You can visit this Wiki page to verify a country’s policy.

In the U.S., for example, most states require at least one party consent to the recording for it to be considered legal. However, states like California, Florida, and Washington require that all participating parties be informed of the recording.

In Europe, things are a bit more liberal. For instance, Italy considers recorded conversations legal and even allows them to be used as evidence in court (even if the other party was unaware they were being recorded), provided that the recording party is part of the conversation.

In the U.K., on the other hand, a recording made by one party without notifying the other is not prohibited if the recording is for personal use. Recording without notification is prohibited, however, if the conversation is then made available to a third party.

Beyond what these laws actually state in your region, you should be mindful that a person’s right to privacy can be severely impacted if their calls are recorded without their express permission. As a result, we encourage you to ask for permission every time you want to record a call. If nothing else, this etiquette will help you avoid any unwanted legal issues. Let’s take a look at how you can get started recording phone calls that are made through a carrier.

How to Record a Phone Call on iPhone

Apple takes your privacy very seriously; hence, it won’t allow you to record phone calls using any native features. The company blocks recording through an iPhone’s built-in microphone if the handset is actively in a call using its own software. This means that despite your iPhone having a native recording app (Voice memos app) you won’t be able to press “Record” while you’re speaking to someone over the phone. Instead, you’ll need to resort to a few workarounds, which are detailed below.

Tip: just downloaded a file on your iPhone or iPad and can’t find it? Here’s where to look.

1. Use Another Phone to Record the Call

The easiest solution if you have another phone (even an older phone would do) laying around the house, is to use it to record the call. It doesn’t matter if it’s an iPhone or Android device. The important thing is that it has a recording app on board. Most phones, including Android devices, come with one preinstalled. If yours doesn’t have one, for some reason, you can easily download one from the App Store or Google Play Store. A few examples of these apps include:

Recorder Plus (iOS)

Rev Voice Recorder & Memos (iOS)

Hi-Q MP3 Voice Recorder (Android)

Smart Voice Recorder (Android)

Begin the Recording

Open the Voice Memos app on your recorder phone.

Start or receive a call on your other iOS device. Put the phone on “speaker.”

Once the other person starts speaking about the subject you’re interested in, make sure you press the red “Record” button in the Voice Memos app to start your recording – but not before informing the other person that you’re going to be recording them.

Make sure the phone that acts as the recorder is placed in the near vicinity of the phone involved in the call. Also, the phone you’re using for the call should have the volume turned up to the maximum (if that’s possible). This will ensure you get a better quality recording.

Once you’re done recording, press the red button once again. The file will be saved to your iPhone, and you can access it from the app. Tap on it to have it start the playback. You can also share it from there or edit it.

2. Use Google Voice

Google Voice is another alternative when it comes to recording phone calls from your iPhone. Unfortunately, the service is only officially available in the United States and Canada or for people who already have a U.S. phone number. If you meet the requirements, download the iOS app and sign up for an account.

Open the Google Voice app on your iOS device.

At the top, tap the hamburger menu and select “Settings.”

Under Calls, you will see “Incoming calls options.” Make sure the toggle next to it is on.

If it is, you’ll notice some information underneath. You’ll be instructed to press “4” to start recording calls.

Wait for the call to come in and answer it.

Once you press “4,” all participants in the call will hear an announcement alerting them that the call is being recorded.

To end the recording, press “4” once again. Participants will once again hear an announcement. By the way, hanging up the call also cancels the recording.

The resulting recordings can be found in the Voicemail tab.

3. Try a Third-Party iOS App

Apple is quite restrictive when it comes to call recording apps, not allowing many in the App Store. Even so, you can still find quite a few of them. The trouble is, most of them are paid apps. Fortunately, Rev Call Recorder is an app that works for free and is fully functional.

Download the app on your phone.

Open it and verify your current phone number.

Once you’re all set, press the “Call” button at the bottom of the display.

Enter the number of the person you wish to call.

Press the “Call [number]” button, and the recording should start automatically.

Both parties involved in the call will hear an announcement saying the call is being recorded.

To end the recording, simply hang up as you would normally do.

4. Use a Dedicated Call Recorder

An interesting alternative for mobile users is using a call recorder device, such as the RecorderGear PR200. This device can wirelessly record both sides of the conversation on Bluetooth-compatible Android or iOS devices.

How to Record a Phone Call on Android

Recording a phone call on Android has the potential to be easier, but only in some regions, as Google offers a native feature in this respect. For the rest of us, most of the options detailed in the iPhone section also work on Android, meaning recording the call using another phone (iOS or Android), Google Voice, and a dedicated call recorder device. Below we look at the Android-specific methods.

1. Use Google’s Own Phone App

On some Android phones, this app might already be preinstalled, but if not, you can download it from the Play Store. However, keep in mind that this feature is only available in certain regions of the world, and your carrier must also support the feature for you to use it. Also, your device needs to be on Android 9 or higher.

You can check whether you have this feature by opening the Google Phone app and tapping on the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.

Select “Settings.”

Go to “Call Recording.” If you don’t see it, it probably means your phone does not support this feature.

You’ll now have to answer a series of questions regarding which calls will be recorded. Follow the prompts that appear on the screen and select “Always record.”

Once you’ve done this, go back to the Phone app and try calling someone.

Look at the display during the call. You should see a “Record” button among the options. Tap on it to start recording.

Once you’re done, tap the “Stop Recording” button again to stop the recording.

2. With a Third-Party Android App

Like Apple, Google doesn’t like call recording apps, but even so, some have still made it to the Play Store. Call Recorder – Cube ACR, for instance, is a free app that can help you record calls without much fuss.

Open the app on your phone and give the necessary permissions as required.

Make or receive a call.

The app will automatically start recording. You’ll see a small notification at the top of the screen that the app is active and recording.

Once you’re done, just hang up, and the recording will be terminated.

The file will be available in the app where you can play it back. You can also easily share it via social or mail apps.

Tip: unclutter your Android agenda and learn how to organize your contacts.

Frequently Asked Questions How do I know my call is being recorded?

Some of the apps and services included on this list will notify both parties that the call is being recorded automatically. That might not always be the case, though. If you hear a constantly beeping sound during a call or a loud beep at the start of the call, it could be a sign that your call is being recorded. Remember that in some countries or states, recording without informing the other party is considered illegal, so it may be a good idea to always ask for permission regardless of the method you are using to record the call.

How can I stop my calls from being recorded?

Unfortunately, there’s no technical solution that could prevent your calls from being recorded. The best you can do is to pay attention to the signs, such as strange beeps during the calls or other noises. If you feel there’s something off about the conversation, hang up immediately and try to limit interactions with the person in question going forward.

Can I use my phone’s screen recording feature to record a call?

While on an iPhone, you can screen record with the sound on, but the moment a call comes through, screen recording will automatically turn off. On the latest version of Android, while it’s possible to screen record with microphone and device sound enabled, you will only be able to record your side of the conversation. If you never recorded your screen on an Android, check out our dedicated guide on the topic.

FAQ:

Yes, recording phone calls is illegal in some US States, depending on where you live or why you’re doing it. Before you record a call, inform the other party first to avoid getting into troubl

However, iPhone doesn’t record high-quality audio, especially when using the Memos App.

Technically, you cannot prevent someone from recording your calls. You can’t control the apps on other people’s phones. However, there are some hints that can be pointed out if someone’s recording your phone call.

Typically, when someone is recording other people, there will likely be a beeping sound at the beginning of the call. If you’re not sure where the call is coming from and you hear a beeping sound, chances are you are being recorded.

You should also be aware of the person who’s calling you and the topic they’re talking about. If any of these feels strange, it could be a signal they’re trying to gather information from the conversation.

Although it isn’t perfect, you can go to the control center in your phone’s settings, choose the customize control option and tap the “-” option on the screen recording and disable it.

Some blocking apps claim to prevent people from recording your calls, but these aren’t secure and could be scams, so be wary whenever you install them on your phone.

Conclusion:

Call recording apps can be helpful, but some people may dummy it, forcing Apple not to include this feature on their devices. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t record calls completely.

A third-party app or even the Voice Memos App on your phone can easily record calls on your iPhone. Select the option which suits you best.

More Things To Do After A Rankings Decline

In a webmaster hangout someone asked John Mueller what to do about algorithm update recovery. The site had suffered a loss of traffic, recovered and then taken another loss of traffic.

Here is the question:

“The last big core update seems to be provoking some drastic changes on the search results for some keywords. It’s a bit weird that for example this site stopped being relevant for some keywords in the first of August and suddenly it’s back again.

I know you’ll say there’s nothing wrong with your site but it’s a bit drastic for the site owner to see them kind of disappear and come back again.”

Google’s John Mueller responded:

“I agree sometimes these things are a bit drastic and it’s especially weird when things kind of bubble back up. But these are essentially changes that we make in our algorithms to try to improve things across the board.

The feedback that we get from people, from SEOs and from users really helps us to kind of improve these algorithms over time.

…it can happen that because of the feedback we’ll try to improve things in a way that will result in more visibility for sites as well.”

John Mueller went on to discuss how important feedback about algorithm changes are to Google. He also highlighted how important it was to provide examples of actual keyword phrases that Google is getting wrong.

Many updates feature what is known as false positives. False positives are algorithm changes that cause a site to incorrectly be seen as no longer relevant for a phrase. Traditionally this is because the site was incorrectly labeled as spammy. But with today’s algorithms it could be because the site is incorrectly seen as not relevant when in fact it is.

The following are my suggestions of things a publisher can do to help communicate what their site is about.

It’s Not a Medic Update

“The update we launched… around the first of August, was more of a general ranking update. Like we always do. So it’s not specific to medical sites. It’s something that could affect… any website out there.”

I declined to call the August update “Medic” because I understood that Google updates do not generally “target” specific industries.

What that means is we’re probably looking at issues related to relevance. Calling it a medic update and focusing on things like E-A-T, in my opinion, did not address all the actual reasons why a site has lost positions.

The Mobile Effect

Sometimes, some of the losses could be attributed to how users are searching, seeing or listening to search results on mobile. So if Google expands “answers” at the top of the mobile page, then unless you’re at the top of the page, you’re going to see a drop in visitors.

Images and Rankings

I think meaningful images could be useful. For example, if the article is about a specific topic or product, then an original photograph would be very useful. Especially if you put a caption beneath that image that describes what is happening in the image. Even if you do not have an original image, try to make that image original in some way or add context to that image with a caption or the file name.

New Article Schema

Google’s algorithm is about relevance. So it’s important to communicate as best you can what a web page is about. If your site is publishing articles then you may wish to implement the article schema. There are WordPress plugins that handle this.

Google has a new article schema that can be used as well. You just fill out the template and then place it in the code. If using WordPress, you can switch the editing view from Visual to Text and then add the code at bottom of the article. It won’t show up in the content. But Google will see it. The easier way of course is to use a plugin.

Just fill it out for each article if you want to skip using a plugin.

Links

Links are still important. Relevance is more important now than ever. If your link building has consisted of obtaining links to the home page or using somewhat questionable link building topics, then you may wish to consider obtaining relevant links to relevant pages other than your home page.

Losing search positions is tough. Sometimes it can be helpful to think outside of the ranking paradigm and focus on becoming a destination for a certain topic. Thinking in this manner can lead to ideas and strategies that can also lead to better rankings.
