Martin Splitt in a Duda webinar explained a concept called Centerpiece Annotation that discusses how Google analyzes content on a web page.
I won’t reproduce the question because it’s somewhat off topic and long.
But what Martin discusses is how Google separates out the boilerplate of a web page and then summarizes from the text content structure what the web page is about.
He mentions what’s called the Centerpiece Annotation.
Martin Splitt explained:
“That’s just us analyzing the content and, I don’t know what we have publicly said about this, but I think I brought it up in one of the podcasts episodes.
So I can probably say that we have a thing called the Centerpiece Annotation, for instance, and there’s a few other annotations that we have where we look at the semantic content, as well as potentially the layout tree.
But fundamentally we can read that from the content structure in HTML already and figure out so “Oh! This looks like from all the natural language processing that we did on this entire text content here that we got, it looks like this is primarily about topic A, dog food.”Screenshot of Martin Splitt Discussing Centerpiece Annotation
Next Martin talks about how the page analysis separates the web page into component parts, some of which aren’t relevant to the Centerpiece.
The parts of the page, he explains, is weighted differently. Weighting is a reference to how important a page element is. So if a section receives a light weighting score then it’s not as important that is weighted with a higher score.
“And then there’s this other thing here, which seems to be like links to related products but it’s not really part of the centerpiece. It’s not really main content here. This seems to be additional stuff.
And then there’s like a bunch of boilerplate or, “Hey, we figured out that the menu looks pretty much the same on all these pages and lists. This looks pretty much like that menu that we have on all the other pages of this domain,” for instance, or we’ve seen this before. We don’t even actually go by domain or like, “Oh, this looks like a menu.”
We figure out what looks like boilerplate and then, that gets weighted differently as well.”

Martin next mentions how after Google establishes what a web page is about, that if a section if off-topic then that off topic section is not given as much consideration, presumably for ranking purposes.
“So if you happen to have content on a page that is not related to the main topic of the rest of the content, we might not give it as much of a consideration as you think.
We still use that information for the link discovery and figuring out your site structure and all of that.
But if a page has 10,000 words on dog food and then 3000 or 2000 or 1000 words on bikes, then probably this is not good content for bikes.”
That’s really interesting because it seems to show that when Google determines what a page is about, then the off-topic content might not have a chance for ranking or as Martin says, is not given “as much of a consideration.”
Jason Barnard asked:
“So that sounds to me like you’re guessing the semantic HTML5. Does semantic HTML5e give you any help or do you just not care? There’s no point?”
What Jason was referencing was the HTML5 markup that defines the different sections of a web page, like the header, navigation, footer, etc.
At the beginning of Martin’s discussion he was making reference to analyzing the content structure and the actual text. So now the topic is kind of drifting a little here into the HTML5 semantic structure.
“It does help us, but it’s not the only thing that we look for. Yes.”

An annotation is a note that explains something. A centerpiece is something that is intended as the center of attention.
A centerpiece annotation seems to be like a summary of the topic of the main content.
Martin explains how Google splits the page out into different sections and weights the parts outside of the centerpiece annotation differently.
He also mentions how parts of a page that are different than the main topic aren’t give much consideration, which seems to mean that it might not be content that can rank.Citation

As soon as Google announced that page load speed had been added to its ranking algorithms, page load speed became a buzzword in the SEO community. Unbelievably, that was over five years ago now.The Real World Impact of Page Load Speed

Micro content, I keep hearing this term and thought it’d be useful to explore what it means; why content marketing is evolving and diversifying and what the practical applications of micro content are for marketing.
Essentially, micro content is as it sounds – short form content. Typically low cost, high value content appropriate to social channels. To all intents and purpose it’s social media content.
It’s not that detailed articles or long form, rich content are any less important, it’s simply a case of being relevant to the social media platform in question, and accessible to an ever detached consumer who’s on the move with a low attention span for your brand.Social and mobile are leading the change
As the world shifts towards mobile devices, and accessing information via social networks on a mobile, micro content becomes a more important and practical form of communicating with customers and prospects. Reading large amounts of text on the mobile just isn’t practical. This is the consumer’s reality now, the rise of short messages through Twitter and Whatsapp, as well visual messages such through Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat. Social media, and so content marketing, has to move with consumer behaviour. Authentically helpful: Whoever your audience is, think ‘serve’… what can you do for them? Serving might be educating, entertaining in some way, inspiring or connecting. The point here is huge but simple. It’s about them.
Focus on useful, concise information: Using your target audience wants and/or needs make your micro content short enough and often enough to become a part of your audience’s daily routine. Think, tips, updates, quotes, news headlines, horoscopes and sports scores. Less is more. And – make sure that the key phrases relevant to your natural search programme are designed into text used in micro content, especially link text.
Think repeatable-social-mobile: How can you build a schedule that enables the delivery of bite-size, snackable information, content that’s fun, easy and cheap to run, that works on the small screen for your moving, information hungry audience. Develop themes of content to open up areas for brain-storming the detail. The more consistent, the lower the cost and ease of repetition.
Curate: Often the best micro content is your short form review or share of somebody else’s stuff that might be useful to your audience, and it doesn’t get more social than that. That enables your appeal and reach to grow naturally through a trusted network.
Call to action: Social media is business. What are you drawing your prospects to do? It’s not that every tweet, vine, Facebook status update or Instagram requires a link back or offer, it really doesn’t and mustn’t, but once in a while deliver the ask. And always make your profile useful to translate who your are and what you do so that the inquisitive can easily learn more and visit your website.

Google Docs makes it easy to add manual page breaks to your documents and push content to the next page without repeatedly pressing the Enter/Return key. There are several ways to do that:

However, if you insert a page break that you no longer need or add one accidentally, it’s important to know how to remove it. To delete a page break in Google Docs:

.How to Remove Section Breaks in Google Docs
Like Microsoft Word, Google Docs on desktop devices allow you to add section breaks to documents. There are two types of section breaks:
: Starts a section break on a new page.
: Starts a new section within the same Google Docs page.
Section breaks help separate different sections of your document in Google Docs. However, unlike regular page breaks, it can be frustrating to remove section breaks unless you know how.
To remove a section break in Google Docs:
Position the cursor at the end of the paragraph before the section break.
If you have trouble locating section breaks in a document:
menu and select
Show section breaks
Show non-printing characters
. You should then see section breaks throughout the document as dotted lines.
Position the cursor above the section break’s horizontal line and press
(Chromebook) to remove it.

Welcome to another edition of Ask an SEO! Here’s today’s question:
For an already existing content, if it is updated, how can we indicate to Google that it has been revised?
We have seen that in some cases Google picks on its own while in some cases the update is ignored and it crawls the story on its own frequency.
Is there a rule around what proportion of the story should be updated for Google to realize that an update has occurred?
There’s not a rule per se as to how much content needs to be updated, but you can use your common sense.
If all you change is a few words or a date, or just add a picture for example, you aren’t really changing the content.
People like to try to game this system by moving paragraphs around but not really changing the point of an article, for example. Google is wise to this and will not reward you for it.
However, if you have an article like “5 Predictions for SEO in 2023” and you update it to be “5 Predictions for SEO in 2023” and actually change most of the content, there are ways to help Google find out about it more quickly.
But before I share that, I want to be clear: the content needs to be different.
You can’t just post the same five predictions you made in 2023 and put them in a different order.
You can’t use four of the same five and just change one.
That’s not going to fly.
I use a real-world test. If I sent this article via email to my loyal followers, would they find value in it, or would I be irritating them by sending the same thing I previously sent?
Google is likely to react similarly.
If your content changes pass that real-world test, the best thing you can do is go into Google Search Console and resubmit the sitemap that contains that page.
Google will usually grab the new page in a couple of days.
If you really need it to be indexed right away (like if it’s time-sensitive content), then often doing a Fetch as Google for the page in Search Console will get it crawled within hours.
Don’t abuse that though – like anything else, if you submit all of your pages all of the time, you’ll dilute the importance of all of them.
Remember, Google will generally trust you until you give them a reason not to.
