Three companies were critical to creating the PC of today, well, four if you include Apple.  But Apple only set a direction. The work of IBM coupled with Intel and Microsoft created the IBM PC, which founded what over 90% of us currently use as our desktop solution today.

Apple isn’t leading in anything but margins and revenue anymore, as that capability was lost mainly when Steve Jobs passed. Still, Pat Gelsinger is the closest thing Intel has had to Andy Grove since Andy Grove left the company, and I think Pat has proven to be one of the most well-rounded CEOs the tech market has ever had.

Now it is interesting that both Microsoft and IBM also have what may be perfect storm CEOs. Both are cloud experts, which is where most of the near-term revenue opportunity resides.  As part of Pat Gelsinger’s Vision talk this week, both IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella were on stage to support Intel’s vision. I think this opens the door for what could become a significant cloud pivot driven by the same three companies that created the PC revolution.

Let me explain.

Intel, IBM, and Microsoft A Potentially Game-Changing Partnership

While these companies have had trouble working together in the past, their current leadership had embraced open architectures, collaboration, and interoperability in sharp contrast to positions they took when they fought with each other.  This CEO alignment not only made this announced partnership likely, but it also made it sustainable because the firms are less likely to disagree to the degree that would cause them to break up again.

In short, they are even more able to come up with and execute a collaborative vision than when they loosely partnered to create the IBM PC. Interestingly, Microsoft’s and IBM’s cloud strategies are in direct conflict. Microsoft is trying to be the best volume cloud provider with Azure. At the same time, IBM is more focused on multi-cloud tools. Their cloud is positioned as a premium offering for buyers who need substantially more security (government, healthcare, and finance).

The New More Powerful Cloud

These new smaller distributed data centers should aggressively address latency issues making cloud computing more viable. The pandemic and Microsoft Teams created reduction in travel and should reduce desktop hardware’s need to perform disconnected.

Clean power needs will likely help fuel Geothermal and Nuclear energy generation’s interest at an ever-smaller scale. By the end of the decade, I expect many of these remote cloud data centers will primarily be self-powered, using more sustainable energy sources.

Automobiles, appliances, security systems, a new generation of fixed and mobile terminals (in PC and Smartphone form factors) will emerge mainly using the maturing 5G standard with ever-growing capabilities and greater flexibility to have redundant suppliers.

Wrapping Up

Intel, IBM, and Microsoft created the PC revolution showcasing they are collectively capable of great things. All three companies are now led by CEOs who are less combative and far more collaborative than their predecessors. All three companies clearly understand what can happen if they miss a market pivot.

And the best way to not miss a market pivot is to execute it yourself. Alone none of these companies (though Microsoft comes close) can do this, but little they can not do together.

There is incredible potential in this partnership. The cloud market is poised for a massive change; I think it likely that these three companies are setting up to drive that change and another disruptive revolution.

Ibm Spectrum Storage: Ibm Gets Serious With Sds And Hybrid Cloud

This week IBM announced IBM Spectrum Storage, targeting both software defined storage (SDS) and the hybrid cloud, and moving them back to center stage with their storage initiatives.

Interestingly, I worked on the software side of storage at IBM decades ago during far harder times. Seeing this group pull together to create something very powerful gives me some personal pleasure as a result. Let’s explore that this week.

One of the problems with IBM’s software storage offerings in the past was that they were distributed in various groups across the company. The collapse of the storage division and subsequent technology acquisitions resulted in fragmentation which created a lot of confusion both outside and inside the firm.

The announcement of IBM Spectrum Storage effectively ends this problem, bringing not only most of IBM’s software storage assets under a single brand and process but also uniting most of the distributed development groups. IBM now has a cohesive team, which will allow them to approach the market more like a storage pure play company.

Earlier this week, I had a chance to talk with City of Hope, which had implemented IBM FlashSystem Storage and reported almost unbelievable performance for an equally unbelievable cost. This was a mixed account that looked at a cross section of the alternatives and concluded that, for the price, nothing else was even close. Certainly, it is a powerful endorsement from a health care provider with massive data capacity and performance requirements.

If flash is the future, and I’m one of the folks who believes it is, then it appears that IBM plans to provide the highest value flash storage systems in the segment. In effect, their goal is to create products that provide so much for the money that customers won’t even consider anyone else.

To make a value play, they clearly can’t go with a forklift strategy, forcing customers to replace all they have in order to make use of their technology. Their secret sauce is tuning the software defined storage system for heterogeneous environments so that adding IBM Spectrum Storage components to an existing solution with servers, networking, and even other storage components from other vendors is as painless as they can make it.

This means a lot of the work has gone into making this family of products very easy to order and install in existing plants. A lot of the innovation has gone into making the related problems go away. Having worked on projects like this while at IBM myself, I can tell you this is neither trivial nor easy, making their progress particularly impressive.

This gives IBM an offering that incrementally provides value while minimizing the cost of the deployment to the near absolute minimum necessary for any third party vendor to dovetail on an existing datacenter. This is particularly important for hybrid cloud solutions where interoperability is critical.

In my conversation with the City of Hope, they mentioned that because the IBM FlashSystem was itself highly redundant, they didn’t feel they needed additional redundancy. So far, that has resulted in both their ability to meet their very aggressive SLAs and keep the overall cost of the deployment to a minimum.

This once again shows the result of IBM’s laser-like focus on providing the best value in the market because additional redundancy can significantly up the cost of a related deployment.

With the announcement of IBM Spectrum Storage, the firm is looking more like it did when it once dominated the industry. Using a value based strategy, they are already providing solutions like IBM FlashSystem Storage that are more than competitive against their peers. This feels like the old IBM I once knew, and, I expect, a lot of old IBM employees are feeling just a tad proud this week.

Microsoft today said it plan to release the beta versions for its first Service Pack updates to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 Release 2 (R2) in late July, giving corporate IT an opportunity for an early look at the releases.

The debut of Service Pack 1 (SP1) for any Microsoft OS is a key event for IT decision makers, who typically wait until the first major update before they begin planning and testing deployments. Although high interest in Windows 7 has led many in corporate IT to start earlier than usual, however, the most conservative IT buyers have still been waiting for the SP1 before beginning their evaluations and pilots.

But fanning the flames of excitement around the pending arrival of SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 wasn’t Microsoft’s only goal today. At the same time, it continued to drive home another message: Enterprise IT decision makers should also be getting ready to move to the cloud.

Bob Muglia, president of Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Server and Tools Business, made the announcements about Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 at the company’s TechEd developers conference today in New Orleans, amid a wider showcase of upcoming updates to Microsoft enterprise software.

However, Muglia spent much of his time onstage preparing developers and IT leaders for the new capabilities coming in the company’s Windows Azure cloud-computing platform.

“The cloud will change many things in IT. Some of the things you’re doing today will become cloud services,” Muglia told the audience. “We’re focused on taking you forward as you begin to move to the cloud.”

With getting customers onto a Microsoft-backed cloud being a key initiative for the company, it’s no surprise that Windows Server 2008 R2 will help drive that effort. As a result, besides the expected bug and security fixes, the upcoming service pack for Windows Server R2 SP1 includes two new virtualization-centric additions — Remote FX and Dynamic Memory.

“The new virtualization tools in SP1 will help Windows Server 2008 R2 users prepare for cloud computing,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in an e-mail to chúng tôi “Remote FX provides a rich 3-D graphical experience for remote users, and Dynamic Memory enables more control to adjust memory usage without sacrificing performance.”

Not all of the Windows Server updates are several weeks away, however. Microsoft today also announced it has released Windows Server AppFabric to manufacturing. Microsoft is busily ramping up new features and enhancements for its Azure services development platform, today releasing new details about what’s to come. Among the enhancements ahead is an updated version of the Windows Azure Software Development Kit, which adds support for .NET Framework 4, the company said in online statements. It also supports Visual Studio 2010’s IntelliTrace feature, which is meant to streamline cloud services debugging.

The company today also revealed further details surrounding SQL Azure, the Azure cloud’s database capability. SQL Azure will provide access to spatial data as well a public preview of the SQL Azure Data Sync Service and of Microsoft SQL Server Web Manager, according to the company. The sync service enables developers to have “more flexible control over where and how data is distributed across multiple datacenters,” Microsoft said in a statement.

Additionally, Microsoft released commercial pricing for the Windows Azure Content Network, beginning at $55.95 for a basic Development Accelerator Core subscription, which includes 750 hours of a “small” compute instance. A Development Accelerator Extended subscription starts at $109.95 and includes the core offering along with a six-month discounted rate for SQL Azure.

Microsoft today also shared new developments in two key enterprise software products: The beta of Exchange Server 2010 SP1 is available for download, while the company also demonstrated several previously undisclosed features of the next edition of Office Communications Server, unofficially dubbed “Communications Server 14.” The product will be available later in the year, Microsoft has said.

During TechEd today, Muglia and a small army of the company’s “demo-gods” also showed off previously undisclosed features of Communications Server “14” — the firm’s unified communications product.
