Internet is a big part of our everyday life, and even though most of us use the Internet on daily basis, many people don’t know how the Internet actually works.

Internet relies heavily on DNS, and in case you’re not familiar with it, today we’ll explain to you want DNS is and how it works.

What is DNS and how does it work?

You might have heard the term DNS before. DNS stands for Domain Name System and it’s a standard used for managing IP addresses. DNS was designed in 1983, and it’s a crucial part of the Internet that allows us to access websites with ease.

Every website has its own IP address, and computers use that IP address to connect to a certain website. If you’re not familiar with IP addresses, we suggest that you read one of our previous articles and learn what is an IP address and how it works.

You can even enter that address in your browser and it will open Google’s website for you. Since every website has its own IP address, it would be quite difficult for humans to memorize the IP address of every website that they want to access, therefore DNS was invented.

To explain it simply, DNS works as a phonebook, it has the names of all websites and their IP addresses, and it allows users to quickly find and access a certain website simply by entering its name instead of using the website’s IP address.

In order for DNS to work, it has to use DNS servers. As we mentioned, DNS servers hold information regarding all websites such as the URL of the website and the website’s IP address.

When you enter a certain URL into your browser’s address bar, you actually contact a DNS server that searches for an IP address that matches that URL.

If the address is found, you are immediately connected to that IP address. If the DNS server doesn’t have that URL and IP address in its database, it will contact a different DNS server and the process will repeat itself until the matching IP address is found.

We have to mention that computers cache DNS responses and your computer should have IP addresses of websites that you already visited, so you’ll be able to access them faster.

How can I check my DNS address on Windows 10?

Unlike humans, computers use IP addresses to connect to websites. Every website has its own IP address and you can easily find the IP address of any website.

You can easily find the address of the DNS server that you’re using by following these methods.

1. Via Network Connections 2. Via Command Prompt

If you’re using a router, it’s most likely that the router is forwarding your requests to your ISP’s DNS servers.

Bear in mind that you don’t have to use your ISP’s DNS servers since you can easily change that address to any other DNS server, such as Google’s Public DNS for example.

How can I change my DNS server on Windows 10?

Expert tip:

Bear in mind that sometimes custom DNS servers might work slower for you, so if you don’t have any problems with your current DNS server you shouldn’t change it.

1.  Press the Windows key and type Network Connections in the search box.

5. Select Use the following DNS server addresses.

6. Manually input the IP addresses you want to change the server address to. For example, Google’s Public DNS addresses are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

7. Press OK to save the changes.

It’s worth mentioning that sometimes malicious software and users can change your preferred DNS server and lead you to scam websites designed to steal your personal information.

If you notice anything strange with websites that you frequently visit, be sure to check your DNS settings.

For a more in-depth guide on how to set up the DNS server 1.1.1.1 on Windows 10, check out our dedicated article.

How can I find my computer’s IP address?

DNS is an integral part of the Internet, and without it, the Internet wouldn’t be the same.

We hope that you learned a thing or two from this article and that you now better understand how the Internet and DNS work.

How To Check Iphone Battery’s Cycles

Want to check the battery cycle count of an iPhone? If you’ve ever wondered how well the battery on your iPhone has aged over time, you may find that checking the battery cycle count can help you get a rough idea of battery health and usage. Knowing how many battery cycles your iPhone has been through can help to determine if the devices battery is in good shape, or if it may be time to consider a replacement.

If you’re not aware what battery cycle count means, it’s a measure of the total number of times a battery is fully charged and depleted. For example, if you fully charged your iPhone to 100% all the way from zero, and then completely drained the battery, it means you’ve completed one battery cycle. Realistically, no one charges and uses their iPhones like that, so let’s say you depleted the battery on your fully charged iPhone to 20% in a day and then recharged it to 100%. The next day, when you deplete your battery to 80%, you’d essentially complete one battery cycle.

Battery cycle count can be useful to determine the battery health, and if you’re interested in knowing how your iPhone battery has fared, we’ll guide you through the necessary steps to check an iPhone’s battery cycles.

How to Check iPhone Battery’s Cycles

Checking the battery cycle count directly on an iPhone is not as easy as you may think. You’ll need to fiddle with some files to actually view the count. Let’s take a look.

Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone.

Now, tap on the “share” icon to bring up the iOS Share Sheet.

Now you’ve learned how to check your iPhone’s battery cycles. Hopefully that wasn’t too hard, though admittedly this is not the most user friendly approach out there.

Once you’ve copy pasted the text within a note, your iPhone might start to slow down a little because of all that text, but please be patient and you’ll find things catch up and get back to normal after a moment or two.

* Note that if you do not see the log data, it may be because you have the iPhone data analytics feature turned off in the settings.

According to Apple, iPhone batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 battery cycles. This is its peak performance capability. However, this is just a rough number, because it heavily depends on your charging habits. As you can see here, my iPhone X has been through a lot with over 1100 battery cycles in the past two and a half years. However, my battery health is still at 79% which is really impressive for the cycle count.

Before you compare your battery cycle count with your battery health, you might want to learn how you can check the battery health percent of your iPhone. Apple recommends you to replace the battery when it drops below 80%. If you’re using the same iPhone for 2 years or less, it’s likely that your battery would stay above 80% health unless you have bad charging habits. If you have a low battery cycle count and a low battery health percent, you may need to adjust how you use the devices battery.

1] Windows PowerShell

Windows PowerShell is a built-in command line tool that comes pre-installed in all Windows computers. You can use this tool to check NTFS permissions. The command that is used to check NTFS permissions in PowerShell is Get-Acl. We will explain here how to use this command in PowerShell in different scenarios.

First of all, launch Windows PowerShell. There are different ways to open Windows PowerShell. The easiest method is to open it via Windows Search.

You can use the Get-Acl command with and without parameters. If you use it without any parameters, Windows will show you the NTFS permissions for the current working directory. For example, if I want to check the NTFS permissions for the folder located inside my D drive, the command is:

Get-Acl D:foldername

Replace the folder name in the above command with the name of your folder. If the folder name has spaces, you have to type it in quotations. For example, if the folder name is New folder, then the command will become:

Get-Acl D:"New Folder"

Now, let’s see how to use the Get-Acl command with different parameters. In all the commands, we will use the New folder as the folder name. Replace the New folder with the name of your folder.

If you use the Format-List parameter, you will see the detailed permissions as shown in the above screenshot. The command Get-Acl with the Format-List parameter is as follows:

The Select -ExpandProperty Access or .Access parameters give you a more detailed view of NTFS permissions, like file system rights, access control type, inheritance flags, etc. (refer to the above screenshot). Both the parameters give you the same result but commands to use both these parameters are different. The commands are given below:

(Get-Acl D:"New Folder").Access

You can use any of the above commands to get more detailed NTFS permissions.

The parameter ft -AutoSize gives the NTFS permissions output in a table format. The command Get-Acl with the ft -AutoSize parameter is used as follows:

If you want to see the NTFS permissions for a particular user name or group, say, Administrators, SYSTEM, Authenticated users, etc, you have to specify it in the command while using the ft -AutoSize parameter. The command for this is:

In the above command, replace the user name or group with the respective names. For example, if you want to see the NTFS permissions for Administrators, you have to type the following command:

In the above screenshot, I have used the above command for three different user names, users, SYSTEM, and Authenticated users.

2] Microsoft’s AccessEnum

You can save the permissions on your disk in text format. The “Compare to saved” is one interesting feature of this free software using which you can compare the permissions of the currently scanned directory or registry path with the saved permissions file.

How To Properly Check Your Internet Speed

If there is one thing that is consistently taken for granted by the majority of people, it’s internet speed. When it’s fast, we never give it a second thought. When it’s slow, we’re pulling our hair out. The question is what can you do about it? Unplug the router and plug it back in? It’s not a bad suggestion. After all, it worked in South Park.

It’s not uncommon for virtually everyone to experience some slow down in internet speed at one point or another. However if you are suffering from frequent slowdowns or interruptions, you’re going to want to find out the root cause of the problem. The very first thing that you should do if you’re experiencing slow network performance is to check your internet speed. Fortunately, there are a variety of web-based tools that will accurately test it.

How to Properly Test Internet Speed

As we mentioned earlier, it’s not uncommon for everyone to experience some type of slow down occasionally. This is why it is important to test your internet speed at various times, on different days. This may seem like a bit of a hassle, but if you’re interested in getting the most accurate results, this is the way to do it.

Think of it this way. Let’s say you come to the conclusion that you’re not achieving the sort of speeds you’re paying for. Your internet service provider probably isn’t going to admit this. Furthermore, it’s more than likely that they’ll simply brush you off and hope you forget about it. However, if you confront them with hard evidence, let’s just say they’ll have a hard time refuting the facts.

The best time to conduct these tests is when Internet traffic is heavy. Identify when you most commonly experience bottlenecking. Chances are it’s after work, at night or on the weekends, when everyone is streaming videos or playing online games. You’ll definitely want to run these tests during those times, but feel free to run them at odd times as well. Remember, variety is the spice of life!

Tools to Test Internet Speed

Testing your internet speed is really easy. In fact, the hardest part is simply remembering to collect the data. Fortunately, the tools you need to test your internet speed are free and easy to use. All of the tools featured on this list are web-based. This means you don’t even have to worry about downloading and installing software!

Speedtest by Ookla

At first glance, Speedtest by Ookla is very similar to chúng tôi To the untrained eye, most would assume that the only real difference is purely aesthetic. However, Speedtest does have a few slight differences. First of all, Speedtest displays both your download and upload speed by default. The Speedtest tool also allows you to change the server. By default, Speedtest finds the optimal server based on your ISP and location. However, if you want to change the server for whatever reason, the option is there.

Measurement Lab Network Diagnostic Tool

This Network Diagnostic Tool is handy for novices, but it’s really meant for network researchers. It functions similarly to all of the other tools on this list and will display your network’s upload and download speed. Where M-Lab’s tool differs is in the detailed information it provides about your network.

Testmy.net

The Internet speed test provided by chúng tôi is one of the most comprehensive on this list. In addition to one-off manual testing of download and upload speed, this one has a unique feature not found in any of the others. chúng tôi has an automatic speed test that will test the speed of your network over a period of time without you having to lift a finger. All you need to do is set it and forget it! Users can set the intervals of testing from every five minutes to once every twenty-four hours. Furthermore, they can determine how many times they want the test to run, from five times to fifty times.

How To Check Your Router For Malware

Your router is a prime target for hackers who want to freeload off your WiFi connection or infiltrate your network. If it’s compromised, they can redirect your personal or business internet requests to malware-infected servers.

Table of Contents

The most recent example of router malware attacks is the VPNFilter threat. Following the massive malware attack that compromised thousands of WiFi routers and networked devices worldwide, the FBI issued an urgent request to home and small office owners to reboot their routers in a bid to disrupt a massive malware attack.

Among the threats such malware poses include rendering routers inoperable, blocking network traffic, and collecting information passing through the routers. You could lose your sensitive or confidential information and data, which could cause a huge problem for you or your business.

Obviously, nobody wants to be in such a situation, which is why we’ve put together this guide on how to check your router for malware and what you can do to make it harder to hack.

Signs That Your Router Is Infected With Malware

Computer runs slower than usual.

Internet searches readdressed to strange sites.

Ransom request messages demanding a sum of money in exchange for unlocking your data.

Online account passwords aren’t working.

Some funds are missing from your online banking account.

Computer programs crash randomly.

New toolbar names that you don’t recognize appear on your web browser.

Several popup windows with fake antivirus messages appear on your screen.

New software installed unexpectedly on your computer.

One major sign that your router has been compromised is in its DNS server. Attackers “hijack” your router’s DNS seeking to modify them without your consent. The idea is to control, monitor and redirect your internet traffic to a phishing site.

For example, if you’re connecting to your online banking account through a device connected to your router, you’ll be redirected to a fake version of the banking site. If you’re alert enough, you may even notice that such malicious sites don’t have HTTPS encryption. From the phishing site, the attacker can access your banking session and take out money without your knowledge.

Here’s what to look out for if your router’s DNS has been hijacked:

If you’re still not sure whether your router has malware or has been hacked, you can the F-Secure Router checker. It’s a simple online tool that quickly checks the health of your router for potential malware threats and vulnerabilities. Although it’s not the most thorough tool to use, it’s a good place to start when checking if your router is infected.

What To Do If Your Router Is Infected With Malware

If you discover your router has malware, here are some simple steps to take to minimize the damage.

Backup Your Data And Files

Before trying to fix your computer or remove malware, backup your data and files to a cloud storage service or to an external hard drive.

Restart Your Computer In Safe Mode

If you get a false antivirus message and suspect your router has malware, turn off your computer and restart it in safe mode to uninstall any suspicious software.

When you’re done, restart in regular mode and check if the messages are gone, and then scan your computer again to pick out any remaining malware threats.

Secure Your Router And Install a Strong Antivirus

This is your first line of defense as it protects your devices online. Create a strong SSID (network name) and password, and turn on your router’s firewall.

You can also get a VPN (virtual private network) for your home or business if you want to be extra cautious.

Change Your Passwords

If there are accounts that have been hacked as a result of the router attack, request a password reset immediately and create a stronger one. You can also use two-factor authentication for added security.

Other steps you can take include:

Final Thoughts

Once you’ve checked your router for malware, and you find most of the signs mentioned above are present, you need to disinfect your computer to restore it to normal functioning.

Introduction to Spell Check in Excel Uses of Spell Check in Excel

Spell Check is used to identify spelling errors, typing errors, or any kind of duplicate words (I will explain it with an example) in Excel. It may be a useful tool when using some texts repetitively in Excel. Although many of us play with numbers in Excel, spell check is crucial in creating some reports and datasets that may have text. So, nobody will want to see any errors in it, or you don’t want to upset your managers/bosses with these mistakes.

Examples of Spell Check in Excel

In the below screenshot, I have the conversation between 2 guys saved in Excel. Don’t go with the content; it’s purely to make you understand better.

Screenshot 1

In Screenshot 1, you can see there are a lot of typing errors and spelling mistakes.

To run spell check in this particular workbook, you must activate the cells where you want to check spelling or typing errors and go to the “REVIEW” tab in the Excel ribbon, and there you will find the spell check option.

A shortcut to run spell-check is simply pressing the “F7” button from your keyboard after activating the cells/worksheet.

Screenshot 2

In the above Screenshot 2, you can notice that I have selected the A1 cell and the spell check option in the review tab.

Key Point: If you select cell A1, it will go through all the cells horizontally, i.e., all columns of the first row, then move to the second row and check all the column cells in the second row (from left to right) and then move to the third row and so on.

A spelling dialogue box will be displayed after going on to the last cell, where any value is stored and identifies any spelling error.

If you want to start to spell check from somewhere else, let’s take an example, cell D5, it will simply go through all cells of Row 5 and then rows below it, and when done will all rows after D5, it will ask you, “if you want to continue checking at the beginning of the sheet?”. Some dialogue boxes like the below screenshot will appear. If you select yes, it will check the remaining cells (A1 to D5 in our case) and shows suggestion. To make you understand better, I have selected the D5 cell and pressed F7 now; it will check all the cells after it, give spelling correction suggestions & after it will ask you to check the remaining cells or not and work accordingly. For your better understanding, please go through the below Screenshots.

Screenshot 3

Pressed F7 after activating B13 cell, now spell check dialogue box will appear with correction suggestions.

Screenshot 4

The results of the cell B13 correction through Spell Check is mentioned in the screenshot.

Screenshot 5

After completing the last cell with correction(C13), it has asked to check from the beginning of the sheet. As discussed above.

Features of Spell Check in Excel Dialog Box

You might have noticed in the screenshots that many spell-check options are available. Let us discuss them one by one.

Add to Dictionary: If there is an error in any text, but you anticipate using the word frequently in the future (such as a name or abbreviation), you can add it to the dictionary in Excel. It will become part of the dictionary and a list of acceptable words. Any word added to Excel’s Dictionary will not be detected as an error in the future in any workbook.

Change: you can use it when you want to change a word according to suggestions, and it will change it according to the selected suggested word. (You can see in Screenshot 3 the words suggested for text in cell C5.)

Change all: It will replace all the instances of that word in a worksheet according to the selected suggestion.

Autocorrect: If you go with this option, it will autocorrect the word with a selected suggestion, and it will be added to the autocorrect list viz; every time you type that word, it will be automatically corrected according to the selected suggestion.

Dictionary Language: We can change the dictionary used in Excel.

Options: Used to change the Excel default settings (discussed later in this guide), and it will open an option box where you can make changes accordingly.

Now I chose to continue to spell check from the beginning of the sheet. And chose options accordingly. All spell checks are done.

In the above Screenshot 6, you might have noticed some spelling errors in the worksheet, but Excel isn’t detecting them. Have you noticed? It has brought us to notice the default settings of the Spellcheck, and they are:

It ignores all errors in the upper case. For e.g., the words “AAM” and “FIINE” in cells C4 & D4 are not marked as errors.

All words with numbers in them will be ignored too. (cell B12 “newww123”)

It also ignores all internet addresses and file addresses. (D7 & B12)

Screenshot 7

Another important feature to note here is Spell check doesn’t ignore repeated words. You can identify it by comparing Screenshot 1 and Screenshot 6 carefully.

Cell F4 has “how are you?” and spell check has detected it. I have deleted it with the delete option, which only appears when we have any kind of repetition in Excel.

Things to Remember

Excel uses spell check to identify spelling errors.

It detects the repetition of words.

You can ignore, change, autocorrect, or add to the dictionary all detected errors according to your requirement.

It doesn’t detect errors in words written in uppercase or have numbers in it.

It ignores all file and internet addresses.

Using Chrome to Check Your Google Storage

How to Check Your Google Storage on Android

Since you’re not always going to be on your computer, it’s good to know you can also check how much storage you have on Google on your Android device. You can do this by using an app such as Gmail and tapping on the profile picture at the top right. When the menu opens, tap on the Manage storage option.

You can tap on the Cleanup space button at the bottom if you want to clear some things and make more space. What’ll happen is that your browser will open so you can choose what files you want to erase on Drive, Gmail, or Photos. If you go with this last option, it’ll show you the biggest files you have, and you can start erasing files you may have forgotten you had.
