How To Show Or Hide File Extensions In Windows 11? – Webnots

Filetype decides the file format and the associated app to open the file. You can identify the type of file based on its extension which generally ends with three characters after the file name and a dot. For example, chúng tôi is an image file while chúng tôi is a Word document. Windows uses the file extension to open the .jpg image in Photos app and .docx file in Word app. However, file extensions are hidden in Windows by default and not shown in File Explorer. In this article, we will explain why to see the file extension and how to show or hide in File Explorer.

Why to View File Extension?

Let us say, you have downloaded a document file from a website and want to open that. However, after downloading you are suspicious whether it is a document file or a virus. Especially if you do not see the know file icon, you should first check its extension before opening the file. Otherwise, the file may be a malware and cause damage to your system if you open it.

Other problem is that Windows do not assign associated app for opening all file extensions. For example, you might have received an .eps graphics file (Encapsulated PostScript). Windows do not have any default apps associated to open .eps files. In this case, you should check the file extension and get a third-party apps like EPS Viewer to open the file.

No App Associated with EPS File in Windows

Note: Remember, Windows only hides the know file extensions like JPG, DOCX, PNG, GIF, PDF, etc. However, other filetypes like PHP will show the extension at the end of the file. This is even dangerous when a malware file does not show the extension. You may think it is a known filetype for system and open it wrongly.

1. Using Details View in File Explorer to See Extensions

The simplest option to view file extensions is to change the view in File Explorer.

Open File Explorer and go to the folder which contains the files.

Select Details View in File Explorer

This will change the view and show all file details.

Check the file extension under “Type” column.

View File Type in Details View

Though this an easy way, as you can see Windows shows JPG for image while “Microsoft Word Document” for a .docx file. If you want to see the full file extension, then follow one of the below options.

2. View File Extensions Using Show Menu

If you want to see the file extensions on desktop, File Explorer and all other places in your computer, then this is an easy option.

Select “Show” option from the dropdown.

Show File Name Extensions in File Explorer

Now, you will be able to find the file extension for each file in File Explorer. You can also go to desktop and check the files will start showing the extensions.

View File Extensions for All Files

3. Disable Hiding Known File Extensions

As mentioned, Windows by default will hide all known file extensions like JPG and DOCX. However, you can disable this feature from File Explorer settings.

Select “Option” from the list of menu items to open “Folder Options” dialog box.

Open File Explorer Options

Go to “View” tab and disable “Hide extensions for known file types” option under “Advanced settings” section.

Disable Hide Known File Extensions in File Explorer

This will instantly start showing all known file extensions. You can use this option to easily find suspicious or unknown files which do not show extension at the end.

4. Enable Showing File Extensions from Control Panel

The next option is to enable showing known file extensions from Control Panel.

Find and open “Control Panel” app from the search results.

Open Ease of Access in Control Panel

Open Appearance and Personalization Option

Select Show Hidden Files and Folders Option

This will open “File Explorer Options” dialog box where you can disable “Hide extensions of known file types” option under “View” tab.

Disable Hide Extensions Option

5. Edit Registry for Showing File Extensions

The next option is to use Registry Editor and enable showing file extensions. Try this option only if you really want to play with registry or use one of the above options.

Press “Win + R” keys to open Run prompt.

Type regedit in the box and press enter key.

Open regedit

This will open Registry Editor app.

Copy and paste the following path in Registry Editor’s address bar. Press enter key to go to that location.

ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced

Find HideFileExt DWORD in Registry Editor

Set HideFileExt Value as Zero

Close all apps and restart your system to find all files will start showing the file extensions.

6. Show File Extensions from Command Prompt

It is also possible to show or hide file extensions in Windows using Command Prompt (or Terminal app).

Press “Win + R” to open Run prompt.

Type cmd and press enter key to open Command Prompt app.

Type the following command and press enter.

reg add HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced /v HideFileExt /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

You will see a message “The operation completed successfully”.

Show File Extensions from Command Prompt

Restart your computer and check the file extensions and visible. The command will directly edit the HideFileExt DWORD in Registry Editor and set the value as 0 as explained above. If you want to hide the files extensions, replace the value 0 to 1 in the command.

Files Without File Names

There are also files without any name but only with extension. For example, .htaccess is the Apache server access configuration file used in popular content management systems like WordPress. Windows by default will hide these types of files and showing extensions will NOT show these files. You should enable showing hidden files option in File Explorer to view the hidden files.

How To Set A Static Ip Address In Windows 11/10

If you are experiencing trouble with your network connection and have it configured to DHCP then, figuring out your IP address can be quite a task. Using Static IP Address helps avert IP address conflicts between networked devices and enables their easy management. This article will show you how to assign a static IP address on a Windows 11/10 computer.

Assign a static IP address in Windows 11/10

In most cases, the IP addresses for PCs or computers are automatically configured to Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) by the respective router. This is useful as the devices connect to your network instantly. You save the trouble of manually configuring the IP address for each new device yourself. However, there’s one shortfall associated with the process – The device’s IP address can change from time to time.

Setting a static IP may be required if you regularly share files, share a printer, or when configuring Port forwarding. We will see four methods to do it:

Via Control Panel

Via Windows Settings

Using PowerShell

Using Command Prompt.

1] Setting a static IP address via Control Panel

From the list of 2 options displayed, select the latter one – Open Network and Internet settings.

Instantly, a separate window will open and direct you to the Network Connections section of the Control Panel.

After that, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) seen under ‘Networking’ tab and hit the ‘Properties’ button.

Switch the selector to ‘Use the following IP address’.

IP address (Find it using ipconfig /all command)

Subnet Mask (On a home network, it is 255.255.255.0)

Default Gateway (It is your router’s IP address.)

In the end, do not forget to check ‘Validate settings upon exit’ option. It helps Windows to quickly check your new IP address and other relevant information to ensure that it works.

If all looks good, press the ‘OK’ button and close out of the network adapter’s properties window.

2] Assign Static IP Address via Settings Windows 11

Select Network & Internet from the side panel on the left and expand the Wi-Fi menu.

Select your current connection, i.e., the network to which you are connected.

Now, when the ‘IP settings’ window pops up, hit the drop-down arrow and select the ‘Manual’ option.

Slide the toggle next to IPv4 to the On position.

Now, set the static IP address. Also, set the Subnet prefix length (subnet mask). If your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then the subnet prefix length in bits is 24.

Once done, configure the Default Gateway address, Preferred DNS address, and Save the changes.

Windows 10

Scroll down to IP settings section and hit the Edit button.

Then, when the ‘IP settings’ window pops up, hit the drop-down arrow and select ‘Manual‘ option.

Turn on the IPv4 toggle switch.

Now, set the static IP address. Also, set the Subnet prefix length (subnet mask). If your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then the subnet prefix length in bits is 24.

Once done, configure the Default Gateway address, Preferred DNS address and Save the changes.

Read: Types and Classes of IP addresses explained.

3] Assigning Static IP Address via PowerShell

Open Powershell as Administrator and enter the following command to view your current network configuration-

Get-NetIPConfiguration

Following this, note down the following information:

InterfaceIndex

IPv4Address

IPv4DefaultGateway

DNSServer.

After that, enter the following command to set a static IP address and press Enter.

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 15 -IPAddress 192.168.29.34 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.29.1.

Now, change DefaultGateway with the default gateway address of your network. Make sure to change the InterfaceIndex number with the one corresponding to your adapter and IPAddress with the IP address you want to assign to your device.

When done, Type the following command to assign a DNS server address and press Enter.

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 4 -ServerAddresses 10.1.2.1

Save the changes and exit.

4] Assign a Static IP Address using Command Prompt

To set a static IP address in Windows 10 using a command prompt, follow the below suggestions:

Type cmd in the text box and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter keyboard shortcut to run the Command Prompt with administrative privileges.

In the Command Prompt window, type in the following text code:

ipconfig /all

When you press the enter key, it will show all the current network configuration.

Under the network adapter, write down the following information:

IPv4 Address

Subnet Mask

Default Gateway

DNS Server.

After that, execute the following command to set a new static IP address:

netsh interface ip set address name="Ethernet0" static ip_address subnet_mask default_gateway

In the above command-line, make sure to change Ethernet0 with the name of your current network adapter.

Also, replace the “ip_address subnet_mask default_gateway” the correct values for your case.

Again, type the following command and hit enter to set a DNS server address:

netsh interface ip set dns name="Ethernet0" static dns_server

In the above command-line, replace Ethernet0 with the name of your current network adapter. Also, change dns_server with the correct values of your DNS Servers.

After running the above commands, type exit and press Enter to close the Command Prompt.

I hope this helps.

What is Static IP connection?

A static IP as the name suggests is an IP address that remains fixed and never changes. So, once your device is assigned a static IP address, its number typically stays the same until the device is decommissioned or your network architecture changes. Static IP addresses are mainly used by servers or other important equipment.

What is Static IP used for?

A static IP address offers convenient remote access which makes it easier to work remotely using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or other remote access programs. Besides, it enables more reliable communication [use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for teleconferencing or other voice and video communications].

Free Duplicate File Finder And Remover Software For Windows 11/10

As we keep using our Windows 11/10/8/7 PC, we tend to accumulate tons of files, images, and music. Chances are that tons of files result in duplication, especially when it comes to images and music. These files take a lot of space on the PC, and they are not easy to figure out the duplicate files and delete them manually.

Find and remove duplicate files

Duplicate files are a problem, as you do not know which one contains the most current content. In the case of collaborating, you may miss out on changes your co-worker did to the document if you open the wrong one. The worst-case scenario may be that you and your colleagues do not know about duplicates and you all work on different versions of the file.

Though there are junk cleaners such as the Comodo System Cleaner and CCleaner, they fail to recognize and fix the problem of duplicate files. Hence you need dedicated software that can search and remove and merge duplicate files.

Duplicate File Finder & Remover software

This article talks about three such free software which will help you find and delete or remove duplicate files in Windows 10/8/7. Below is the list of software that can help you remove duplicate files on the Windows 10 PC.  Some are completely free, while some have a PRO version that helps you do more, and find files more accurately.

1] DoubleKiller

As evident by the name, DoubleKiller finds and removes duplicate files from your computer. The software from Big Bang Enterprises is available in two editions. One is free to use, and you have to pay for the other edition. Of course, the paid edition does more work, but you can get good results with the help of freeware too.

The software uses methods including a hash comparison to compare files. This software is easy to use, and hence I placed it in the first position.

2] AllDup

It’s a powerful software, feature-rich, which can find, and delete duplicate files. You can of course copy, and move as well. One of the riches aspects of this tool is finding duplicate MP3 files with different ID3 Tags. It has many options and filters to compare MP3 files and images by their content, rather different metadata such as ID3 Tag.

Apart from this, another unique feature of this software is that it lets you compare two folders for duplicate files. You can choose to compare with one source folder or files within the folder or between different source folders. Later is very useful if you have a habit of maintaining copies at multiple places. Download it from here.

3] dupeGuru

Known popularly as the dupeGuru Music Edition, the latest version of dupeGuru adds music files in comparison to the feature set.

In addition to removing duplicate files with similar filenames, this freeware also has the capability to search within files – especially MP3s – to know if they are similar even in case the filenames are different. It presents you with the search results allowing you to select which one to keep and which one to discard.

4] Duplicate Cleaner Free from Digital Volcano

When you download this software, look for “A basic, light version of Duplicate Cleaner, for Non-Commercial use only”. The download page offers you a pro version up front, but for home usage, the light version is more than enough.

The pro version tells you if they are alike and also can do byte-to-byte+algorythms. It also offers image mode and audio mode. The audio mode is very interesting. It can find files based on ID3 tags, but they are available only in Pro mode. Download it from here.

5] WinMerge

6] Auslogics Duplicate File Finder

This freeware from the stables of Auslogics will help you to find and remove useless duplicate files, stored on your Windows PC. It’s another brilliantly designed software that can find duplicate images, audio files, video, archives, and applications on your Windows 10 PC.  There are features which I absolutely loved about it. First, it makes sure to backup everything you plan to delete, and second, it ignores a set of system files and folders by default.

That said, once you search, the results are displayed in form of groups with highlighted colors. This makes it easy to understand. The results can be filtered by date and type, and you can then choose to select only duplicate files by modified date, select only one group, and so on.

Features:

Finds identical pictures, documents, and any other files

Compares files not only by names but by their content

Can significantly increase free space on your disk

Helps you to organize your media collections

Reduces the time needed to defragment your hard drive

A small warning here. During the installation, the software asks you to download its in-house products. Make sure to uncheck them from the installation. Download it from here.

7] Duplicate File Eraser

Duplicate File Eraser offers simple, but minute details you can take over to find duplicate files. You can search directories, subdirectories, hidden files as well as system files (ignore though) for duplicate files. You can choose between CRC32, MD5, SHA1 file comparison algorithms. If you want to find files based on size, type name, etc., it is possible. It can also search hidden files, but make sure to do it for folders that you own, and not use the system folders.

8] Dupscout Duplicate Finder

9] NoClone

NoClone is another free software that uses a real-time byte-to-byte comparison to detect duplicate files regardless of their file names. You can limit the search to specific file types (images, programs, etc.) as well as by size, date, and location.

This software uses the real-time byte-to-byte comparison to find the exact content and not related ones. The best part is that it supports a plethora of file extensions including s docx, xlsx, pptx; audio files, video files, Outlook emails, and more. To find similar images, it uses a fuzzy search algorithm. The free version restricts itself to 300,000 files in a single session. The free edition of NoClone restricts itself to 300,000 files in a single session.

Other similar freeware in this category are:

If you need to find duplicate images, try Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder.

Warning: When deleting files from your PC, be very careful. If you send up searching everywhere on PC, chances are you may delete system images, and it may cause the system to become unstable. So, be very very careful.

This list of freeware to remove duplicate files is based on my own experience. If you have any favorites, please let us know.
