Suggested April 2024 How To Emulate Ps2 Games On An M1 Mac With Aethersx2

AetherSX2 is a newly released PS2 emulator (which is still in Alpha) that can emulate PS2 games even on the base M1 Macbook Air at full speed. If you like the idea of loading up your favorite PS2 games on your shiny Apple Silicon computer, we’ll show you how it’s done.

What Is Emulation?

The Playstation 2 is a very different kind of computer than an Apple computer. Especially one with a CPU like the M1 in it. They don’t speak the same “language” at all and the arrangement of physical processors doesn’t align with each other.

AetherSX2 uses a technique known as “emulation” to make the PS2 game think that it’s running on original console hardware. Therefore, emulation requires more processing power than the original system offered.

That’s because you’re creating a computer within a computer in a sense. However, emulation methods have become quite efficient over the years. There’s no such thing as perfect emulation, but the results are often more than good enough for most players.

Why the M1 Is Perfect for Emulating Games

Apple’s M1 processor is actually a gaming powerhouse. Its CPUs perform just as well as much larger laptops, and it has more GPU power than a PlayStation 4.

Native M1 Emulators Are Scarce

There are quite a few emulators for various console systems for macOS. OpenEmu contains numerous “cores” that can emulate consoles like the PS1 or Atari 2600. There’s also PCSX2, which is perhaps the best-known PS2 emulator. PCSX2 has a macOS version, sort of. At the time of writing it’s an unofficial offshoot by a coder known as Tellowkrinkle.

What these macOS emulators have in common is that they are written to run on Intel Macs, and not the new generation of Apple Silicon machines. In other words, they have to run through the Rosetta 2 translation layer, which itself has a performance cost and occasional compatibility issues. In our tests with PCSX2, we could never emulate PS2 games at full speed.

AetherSX2 is the first PS2 emulator on macOS that runs native ARM code, which is the “language” that Apple Silicon processors understand. This means it can run many games at much faster performance levels than PCSX2 and it requires less CPU power and battery consumption to do it.

Legal Considerations When Emulating

Depending on where you live, emulation may be legal, in a gray area, or against the law. It’s your responsibility to determine which is the case in your region. In general, it’s legal to make backups of video games that you have paid for and then use them with an emulator, but if you download games from the internet without paying for them, it’s tantamount to piracy. So let your own moral compass be your guide.

AetherSX2 Requirements

AetherSX2 is actually a port of an Android application. Amazingly, the creators who ported it don’t even own a Mac! So the only requirement to run the emulator is an Apple Silicon Mac starting with the M1 and including anything faster, such as the M1 Pro, Max, Ultra, or M2. AetherSX will not run on any Intel Mac.

You need to connect the controller via USB or Bluetooth the same way you would for any game. There’s official support for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series controllers in macOS.

How to Set Up AetherSX

To get AetherSX2 running on your Apple Silicon Mac, the first thing you need to do is download the software archive. Then unzip it, if your browser hasn’t already done it for you. You may want to copy the app to your “Applications” folder, but that’s up to you!

Confirm any prompts asking you if you’re sure you want to run the software.

Now, search on Google (or the engine of your choice) for “PS2 BIOS files”. We won’t link to them directly here, but they shouldn’t be hard to find. Do scan the files for viruses just to be safe. The contents of the folder should look something like this.

You can drag your BIOS files here, though you’ll have to give AetherSX2 file access permissions to complete the process.

Next, copy your game disc image files to a dedicated directory. We’ve created a disc image of our physical copy of Valkyrie Profile 2. You’ll need a DVD drive to create such a folder along with an application to make disc images.

Note: You may also choose to simply download an image from the internet of the game that someone else has made, which would be identical to an image you’ve made yourself. However, this may have legal implications depending on where in the world you live, so you do so at your own risk.

Although AetherSX2 has a “Start From Disc” option in its menus, we weren’t able to play our game directly from its DVD. Hopefully, this will work properly in a future version. Fortunately, whenever you put new game images into this folder, the software will automatically list it.

Select “Add Game Directory” and pick the folder you’ve copied your games to.

Your games should now be listed.

The game should now be running easily!

              Additional AetherSX Settings When Emulating

Getting a game running is only the first step. You’ll almost certainly want to explore the settings menu to adjust aspects of how the game runs.

The only immediate change we’d recommend is changing the internal resolution to either 1080p or 1440p, which will dramatically improve the clarity of the game. Although this comes with a performance hit that may be too heavy depending on the specific game. Only change other settings after researching what each one does.

Different games may need different tweaks and settings to run correctly. So it’s a good idea to check out the community compatibility list to see how well various games run and if they need any specific tweaking.

              AetherSX2 Still Has Problems

AetherSX2 has amazing performance, running most of the games we’ve tried with it at full speed. However, it’s still a very early version of the emulator for macOS. This means that some games aren’t going to work perfectly and some might not be playable at all.

If you like what AetherSX2 has achieved on Apple Silicon Macs so far, you can support the developers on their Patreon so they can get the right test equipment to improve the software.

Like all console emulators, there’s always a little bit of work, you have to do to emulate PS2 games way you like, or to deal with minor visual bugs. Still, when AetherSX2 is firing on all cylinders it’s a sight to behold.

How To Remove An Image Background On Mac

In today’s visually-driven world, images play a vital role in getting your message across. You don’t have to be a graphic designer or professional to remove the background from an image on Mac. macOS provides a host of built-in features to remove the background of an image, and it is easier than you think. This step-by-step guide shows how to easily remove the background of any image on your Mac.

macOS provides multiple ways for you to remove the background of an image on your Mac. The following methods are focused on the latest version of macOS. If you haven’t already, update to macOS Ventura. However, many of the steps will work similarly, even if you’re using an older version of macOS.

              Finder Quick Actions

You will see a copy of the image in Finder. The file name will have “Background Removed” added to the original name.

              Photos App

The latest release of macOS Ventura provides a seamless experience to removing the background from an image. Follow the steps below to remove a background via the Photos app.

Paste the subject in the app you are working on via command + v. For this example, I’m using Google Docs, but it will work with any platform.

The last option allows you to change your outfit. Leave it as “Original” if you are happy with the picture as is.

Frequently Asked Questions Is it possible to retain the original image quality after removing the background?

Yes, to a certain extent. Remember that any time you save an additional copy of any photo, you are lessening the quality. Many times it is negligible, but if you do it enough times, it will be visible. As far as third-party websites are concerned, always try to download the highest available resolution of an image.

How To Hide Games On Steam

Steam has a mind-boggling impressive catalog of 50,000+ video games encompassing every imaginable genre. But it also contains lots of titles with terrible gameplay or embarrassing content that you’d prefer not to have your friends or family see you play.

Luckily, Steam provides a handful of options and privacy controls that you can readily use to hide specific games on Steam or your gaming activity from others. They aren’t perfect, but you should find them adequate in most circumstances.

              Table of Contents

              Hide Games in Steam Library

If you want to keep a Steam purchase private from someone else with access to your PC or Mac, you can quickly choose to hide it from your library. However, that won’t uninstall the game, hinder your ability to play it, or hide it from players on your Steam friends list.

              1. Open the Steam app and switch to the Library tab.

              3. Point to Manage and select Hide this game.

              Hide In-Game Steam Status

If you want to stop players within your Steam friends list from seeing you as “in-game” while playing a particular video game, the best way to do that is to set your profile status to “Invisible.” That will make you appear as “Offline” in Steam, but you can still chat.

However, players shall continue to see your achievements and playtime related to the game should they decide to visit your Steam profile. You can prevent that by tweaking your privacy settings (more on that further below).

              1. Open the Friends & Chat pane from the lower-right corner of the Steam app.

              2. Select the arrow-shaped icon next to your Steam avatar.

              3. Select Invisible.

Note: Selecting Offline also hides your in-game status, but you won’t be able to chat with other players.

Once you’ve finished playing, feel free to change your Steam status to “Online.” Just make sure to exit the game fully before you do that.

              Hide Status From Select Friends

Blocking all communication with a player in your friends’ list prevents Steam from relaying your gameplay activity to them in real-time. That’s ideal for instances where you want to hide a game from a few select friends only.

However, your in-game status will still show up within a blocked player’s Friends & Chat pane if they decide to quit and restart Steam.

              1. Open the Friends & Chat pane.

              2. Select the arrow-shaped icon next to the player’s profile name.

              3. Point to Manage and select Block All Communication.

Set Steam Game Details to Private

Setting your profile status to “Invisible” does not block your games list, achievements, or playtime from players in your friends’ list. If you want absolute privacy, you can hide all game details on Steam by modifying the privacy settings in your Steam profile. That will also stop Steam from displaying you as “in-game” to other players while playing any video game in your library.

              1. Select your Steam profile avatar from the top-right of the Steam app or website and pick the View my profile option.

              2. Select Edit Profile and switch to the Privacy Settings side tab.

              3. Under the My profile section, set Game details to Private.

Alternatively, you can keep the Game details setting at Friends Only (which is the default setting) and check the box next to Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details to block your total game playtime only.

Steam should save your changes automatically. Make any additional modifications to the privacy settings if you want and exit the Edit Profile screen.

              Remove a Steam Game Permanently

Suppose you don’t want to make your Steam game details private. But if you still want to hide a game from your online Steam profile, you can take the drastic step of removing it from your account completely. However, the only way to play it again is by re-purchasing it.

Permanently removing a game won’t hide any achievements or playtime related to it on your Steam profile.

              1. Open the Help menu and select Steam Support.

              2. Select the video game from the Recently Played list. If you don’t see it, type its name into the search box at the bottom of the screen to bring it up.

              3. Select I want to permanently remove this game from my account and follow all remaining instructions to remove it from your Steam account.

If you’ve only played the game for less than two hours and have yet to exceed two weeks since the date of purchase, try requesting a refund from Steam instead.

              Privacy Conscious Gamer

Your privacy matters, and Steam could be much better with more granular options to determine what others can and cannot see. For example, being able to hide the achievements and playtime for individual games instead of everything would be nothing short of terrific. But until Valve decides to improve its platform, the methods above should help you out a lot.

How To Backup Iphone On Mac

Smartphones are the means to things beyond just communication. You use it to get work done, get your daily scoop of news, entertainment, listening to music, stay in touch with your loved ones, and capture all the best moments around you. With so many use cases, your phone also stores a lot of information that you may want to protect when switching phones or in the worst case, lose it.

iPhone users have the option to choose between an iCloud backup or a Mac backup. If you have a lot of data to back up and the iCloud’s free 5GB storage isn’t enough for you, then your next best option is to back up your iPhone on a Mac. In this post, we’ll help you back up your iPhone data on a Mac using iTunes or Finder and then show you how you can restore it with ease.

What iPhone data can you back up on a Mac?

When you use your Mac to back up data from your iPhone, the backed up data covers almost all of your device’s data and settings except for the following items:

Face ID or Touch ID settings

              Apple Pay data and settings

Content from iTunes, App Store, Apple Books

Content synced using Finder or iTunes

Data already stored in iCloud – iCloud Photos, iMessage, text (SMS), and multimedia (MMS) messages

              Activity, Health, Keychain data

              Apple Mail data

Your iPhone backup can also be restored to a different iPhone or iPad as well but in doing that, you’ll have to keep in mind that some types of content won’t get transferred.

How to Back up your iPhone on a Mac

If you want to keep the data on your iPhone safe and secure, then backing it up on your Mac is the best possible way to make sure you don’t lose any information during the transfer process. Mac backups can also help you set up a new iPhone in such a way that all the content from your previous iPhone including its settings is copied.

You can back up your iPhone on a Mac in two different ways but you don’t get to choose which one yourself. If you’re using a Mac that’s running on macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, then you’ll have to go ahead and use iTunes to back up your iPhone on your Mac. For devices running macOS Catalina 10.15 or higher, you can use the native Finder app to get things started.

Before you start backing up your iPhone data on a Mac, you need to make sure of the following things:

Your Mac is updated to the latest macOS version

iPhone that you’re backing up is running the newest iOS version

You have the USB-to-Lightning cable that comes out-0f-the-box with your iPhone [This is needed to establish a connection between the iPhone and Mac]

              Using iTunes

You should follow this procedure only if you’re using a Mac that’s running macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier. Before you start backing up your device, switch ON both your Mac and iPhone and connect the two using a USB-to-Lightning cable.

Now, launch iTunes on your Mac from the Launchpad or the Applications folder inside Finder.

To establish a connection, you will also have to tap on the ‘Trust’ button on your iPhone when prompted with the “Trust this Computer” dialog and then enter your iPhone’s passcode.

On the right-side pane, scroll down and locate the ‘Backups’ section.

You can additionally back up Health and Activity data from your Apple Watch by checking the ‘Encrypt local backup’ box.

              Using Finder

To start backing up your iPhone, power ON both the iPhone and Mac, and unlock them. After the devices are booted up and unlocked, connect them using a USB-to-Lightning cable that came with your iPhone.

After a successful connection, open the Finder app on the Mac.

In the next step, you will have to tap on the ‘Trust’ option on your iPhone when it prompts you with the “Trust This Computer” dialog.

You will now be able to view your iPhone data inside the Finder app on your Mac once the authentication is successful. This is the screen that shows your iPhone device management and stores all the tools you need to back up your iPhone.

How to Restore an iPhone backup on a Mac

The backups you created can be used to restore your iPhone when your device is misbehaving or if you’re resetting it as new. Backups can also be restored when switching to a new device from an older iPhone. How you restore an iPhone from a backup saved on your Mac depends on the method you used to back up your iPhone data.

If backup was created on iTunes

You will need to rely on the iTunes app on your Mac again if you created an iPhone backup on a Mac running macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier. To restore an iTunes backup, connect your iPhone to the Mac using the USB-to-Lightning cable.

Inside the ‘Summary’ screen, scroll down and locate the ‘Backups’ section.

A new dialog will appear on the screen showing you a list of backups you have stored on the Mac alongside the date on which they were created.

Select the backup you want to restore and enter the password that the backup was created with if you had saved your backup with encryption.

iTunes will start restoring your iPhone with the backed up data. To make sure that the restoration process is successful, keep your iPhone plugged into the Mac until the end.

If backup was created on Finder

Similar to how you do it using iTunes, restoring your iPhone from a backup on Finder is pretty easy. You will need to connect your Mac and iPhone using the USB-to-Lightning cable and then open the Finder app.

If your iPhone is protected with a passcode, you will be asked to enter it. When you do that, you will be greeted with the iPhone device management screen.

You will now be shown a list of backups that were created on your Mac along with the date of their creation. Select the backup you want to restore your iPhone from, preferably the most recent one.

Also, enter the password that you may have set for the backup if you had enabled encrypted backup at the time of its creation.

The restoration process will now begin and your iPhone will restart when the backup has been successfully restored.

After this, you can go ahead and disconnect the iPhone from your Mac and check whether all your data has been accounted for.

Why can’t I restore a backup on your iPhone?

While restoring an iPhone with a backup on a Mac is a daily simple task, you might sometimes run into problems doing the same. If you’re having issues restoring a backup, it could be because of any of the following issues:

Either your Mac or iTunes isn’t running their latest versions

Your backup file may be corrupted, incompatible, or too old

You did not disable Find My iPhone before restoring your device

Your phone may not be unlocked

A wrong password was entered while restoring an encrypted backup

If there isn’t enough disk space on your iPhone or Mac

Backup may have been created on another Mac

If backup files got deleted from your Mac accidentally

The connection between iPhone and Mac broke down because of a faulty cable

Can’t restore a backup? Try these fixes

If you’re encountering issues when restoring an iPhone backup, then you can perform these fixes to solve them.

Restart both your iPhone and Mac: Often times, a simple restart can solve a ton of problems you may be encountering on your device. You can try restoring a backup after restarting both the Mac and iPhone.

Choose the right Mac to restore from if you have multiple Macs and you backed up manually on one of them.

Enter the right password for your encrypted backup and if you don’t recall it, create a new backup with another password.

Clear space on your device when creating or restoring a backup. You need ample space in both your Mac and iPhone to store and transfer your backup without an issue.

Create a new backup if an older backup has gotten corrupted or is incompatible. Apple doesn’t allow you to restore any amount of data from a corrupted backup.

Try a different USB-to-Lightning cable to connect your Mac and iPhone. This helps establish a better connection between the two devices.

Restore using an iCloud backup: iOS lets you back up your iPhone data wirelessly to iCloud so that you may restore them at anytime anywhere without using your Mac.

How To Install And Run Stable Diffusion On Apple Silicon M1/M2 Macs

Stable Diffusion is a text-to-image AI that can be run on personal computers like Mac M1 or M2. In this article, you will find a step-by-step guide for installing and running Stable Diffusion on Mac.

You will need a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or M2) for reasonable speed. Ideally, your machine will have 16 GB of memory or more. You will need to wait longer for an image compared to using a similarly priced Windows PC with a discrete graphics card.

Here are the install options I will go through in this article.

Draw Things – Easiest to install with a good set of features.

Diffusers – Easiest to install but with not many features.

DiffusionBee – Easy to install but with a smaller set of functions.

AUTOMATIC1111 – Best features but a bit harder to install.

Alternatively, you can run Stable Diffusion in Google Colab which uses AUTOMATIC1111 (This is what I use and I am a Mac user). Check the Quick Start Guide for details.

Read this install guide if you want to install Stable Diffusion on a Windows PC.

How To Manage Root Users On Mac

This tutorial shows you how to enable root user on your Mac, log in to it, use it, change its password, and finally disable it.

You may be familiar with admin and standard users of your Mac. If you own a Mac, you’re most likely its administrator (if not, you should seriously consider being that). Secondly, if you share your Mac with other people in your family or office, you can create a standard user account for them.

In addition to the above two options, macOS has a lesser know hidden feature to use it as a root user or superuser.

As an administrator on your Mac, you have plenty of privileges like managing other user accounts and changing their settings. But if you need to access additional areas of the system, then you might need to become a root user, which is different than an administrator.

This “superuser” is disabled by default on Mac. So, if you need to enable a root user, we’ll show you how to do that.

Take caution as a root user on Mac

A root user can access system files, additional areas of the system, and comes with a great amount of responsibility. For example, when you’re logged in as a superuser, you can access files even in other macOS user accounts!

Apple recommends the following for root users:

The root user account is not intended for routine use. Its privileges allow changes to files that are required by your Mac. To undo such changes, you might need to reinstall your system software. You should disable the root user after completing your task.

If you still want to enable the root user on your Mac, we’ll now show you how.

              Enable root user on Mac

              1) Open Directory Utility on your Mac. You can do it in a few different ways:

Method 1: Launch Spotlight and type Directory Utility in it.

You’re now a root user on your Mac.

How to log in to root user on Mac

After you enable the root user, follow these steps to log in to it:

              2) On the login screen, select the Other user, which is the root account.

              3) Enter root as the username.

              4) Finally, enter the root user password you created while enabling the root user (step 4 above), and hit the enter/return key.

You’re now using your Mac as a root user. You’ll notice that it almost appears like a fresh installation of macOS.

You can tweak a few settings, like setting Finder to show the root folder in its sidebar. And then, you can access the files of other users and even add files to their accounts!

Log out of root user on Mac

              2) Select your Mac’s admin account if required and enter its password to log in to it.

You’re now out of the root user and into your admin account. You must now disable the root user on your Mac.

              Disable root user on Mac

When you finish your task, you should disable the root user account. And you must never use the root user for your everyday use. You already have admin and standard accounts for everyday use.

Change the root user password on Mac

Now that you know how to enable a root user and change the password on your Mac, is this something that you’ll be using? If so, let us know what types of tasks you need to perform that require a root user level.
