Suggested March 2024 How To Evalluate And Determine Risk Appetite?Introduction to Risk Appetite Explanation
The dictionary meaning of appetite is the desire to satisfy needs (especially food desire to satisfy the taste). Similarly, in the case of investment, the desire is for satisfactory returns. Risk appetite, therefore, refers to the capacity to bear the risk in case loss occurs.
This concept widely uses in risk management techniques to provide a bar on the maximum allowable risk for an investor. Risk appetite level famously refers to the tolerance level of risks.
The level of tolerance may differ from person to person. Tolerance also depends on the nature of the work & the objectives. Where public safety involves, the tolerance level is on the lower side.
Organizations must decide the risk tolerance or acceptable level of risk before making decisions. Because after the decision is made & action is implemented, there is no backing out. The person exposes to whatever consequences for the said decision.
The risk appetite statement is innovative nowadays, expressing the acceptable risk for the entire organization. This statement depends on all the concerns of stakeholders & interconnected persons with the entity.
From an investor’s perspective, risk appetite is the variation he is ready to accept in returns. The variation can be both positive as well as negative.
A greater risk horizon connects with the equities market, exchange-traded, or equity-based funds. Smaller risk horizons connect with bond markets or bond-based funds. Also, it depends on the investor’s age, net worth, and other demographic factors. How to Determine Risk Appetite?
People generally have misconceptions about risk appetite with risk management. Both start at different lines. Risk management is the daily or frequent analysis of the entity’s risks. Based on such analysis, it is that line above which the entity cannot bear the loss in case the risk crystallizes.
Determining the risk appetite requires the first determination of the probable risk. Probable risk determines using various techniques such as analyzing the past trend, competitor’s analysis, SWOT of the entity, possible downfall for the entity, change in macro-economic factors for the country & the business, etc.
Based on such analysis, the management calculated an acceptable figure beyond which the entity would not take a risk. The higher management approves such analysis & then the same implements it throughout the entity.Types of Risk Appetite
The risk appetite types are nothing but the levels of risk accepting capacity. These levels broadly explain below:
Start Your Free Investment Banking Course
Aggressive Level: This risk level refers to risk-loving, wherein the entity or the investor wants to take all sorts of logical risks, which would manifold the investment amount. The entity is not concerned with the level of aggressiveness of risk; they just want to grab all available opportunities for gains through a maximum stop-less on the negative returns.
Moderate Level: This is a mediocre level of risk, where the decision depends on the risk-to-reward ratio. Every risk is positively proportional to rewards. The entity or investor decides the ratio of risk acceptance for a given reward. In the case of moderate levels of risk, the basic objective is increasing the wealth of shareholders.
Conservative Level: This level also refers to a risk-averse level, wherein the entity or investor does not want to take any risk. It wants to satisfy hunger only through safe positions. As said earlier, risk & return go hand-in-hand. Thus, such a level of risk provides lower returns on capital employed. The basic objective is to safeguard the capital employed & an increase is acceptable only through risk-free investments at a conservative level.Risk Appetite Table
The risk appetite table is nothing but the quantum or level of acceptable risk for each risk category.
The best presentation can depict in the following picture:
In the above table, the categories are various business prospects. The second to fourth column presents the level of willingness to accept risk. Thus, it can be best judged accordingly.Measurement of Risk Appetite
It is described through a risk appetite statement since the exact risk calculation is impossible. However, A detailed rationale provides to assess the level of risk.
The level of risk appetite is different for different types of risk. The entity is risk-averse in case of an increase in raw material prices & thus, enters into possible hedge contracts.
Risk can measure by computing the maximum financial loss in case the risk crystallizes the maximum amount of delay in constructing a plant.
Over the period of experience in the relevant field, the managers acquire the possible risks in the business areas. Such as the managers knowing the possible deviation in input prices over the years or possible demand functions for their product.Benefits of Risk Appetite
Since the entity knows the level of possible risk, the entity can decide a borderline between the level of innovation and possible precautionary measures.
It provides a broader picture of the entire business risk.
If the expected risk is higher than the appetite level, risk management is involved in suggesting risk mitigation measures.
With a risk appetite level, the company can decide on the growth rates for the entity as a whole. The same goes for an investor; he can decide upon the quantum of return to earn.
The level of rewards rewards the level of risk appetite. More risk equals more chance of rewards.
Having the level of risk predefined, the entity can focus on other aspects of business growth without fearing future risk.Importance of Risk Appetite
An entity needs to understand where they stand regarding available exposure to risk.
It supplements the risk analysis of the management.
As a company or entity has defined the level of risk appetite as applicable to their business, they can focus on further expansion of the business segment & other business policies.
It helps the entity to evaluate the maximum possible return or ways to curb potential losses. Thus, it amplifies the efficiency of the investor & the entity as a whole. Conclusion
Risk appetite should not be seen only from the point of the investor. It mainly applies to the business prospects of the entity, whether the business will bear or sustain the possible loss of demand or margins, etc. Risk management deals with counter-measures if risk crosses the risk appetite levels. Thus, risk management & risk appetite are correlated but not the same. The objective of it is to provide clarity over the acceptable level of possible risks to the organization.Recommended Articles

The modern business environment is highly competitive and filled with uncertainties that organizations cannot avoid experiencing risks from time to time. Fortunately, the proper application of risk management strategies such as risk mitigation and risk remediation can help businesses to minimize the damage or eliminate threats to their operations. Risk mitigation and risk remediation help organizations improve their efficiency and performance by identifying and addressing security vulnerabilities and risks that threaten the success of projects and business operations. What’s Risk Mitigation?
Businesses should engage in risk mitigation because it helps them to establish action plans for existing and future security vulnerabilities. It also allows companies to focus and achieve their objectives and goals by creating strategies for controlling risks. Risk mitigation helps minimize risks and facilitate better business decision-making, which increases project success.
Consequently, risk mitigation allows businesses to improve communication and protect their employees, team members, and stakeholders against risks. It also promotes compliance, reduces legal liability, and protects the company’s reputation. What’s Risk Remediation?
Risks arise from unfixed vulnerabilities within a system. Therefore, risk remediation involves steps taken by a business to identify vulnerabilities that present risks and stop them before they become significant threats.
What are The Key Differences Between Mitigation and Remediation?
Although both risk mitigation and remediation are steps conducted during risk management, they involve different concepts and activities as follows;
Risk mitigation and risk remediation address different amounts of risk.
Risk mitigation and risk remediation focus on different issues.
Risk mitigation and risk remediation have different implementation processes.
Why Do Businesses Need to Pay Attention to Both? How to Implement Risk Mitigation and Risk Remediation Processes Risk Mitigation
Businesses can tackle the implementation of risk mitigation using five main processes;
When the consequence and effects of the risks are severe, a business may choose risk avoidance by canceling a project altogether or making schedule changes. However, a business may opt for risk acceptance when the project is ongoing, and the risk is already affecting the business without a possible remedy.
There are instances where the effects of the risk can be reduced and are not strong enough to warrant avoidance; hence businesses implement risk reduction. Businesses can implement strategies such as additional safety procedures during risk reduction to reduce the consequences of the risk. Another strategy for handling risk mitigation is risk transfer.
Businesses can tackle adding risk remediation using the four-step vulnerability risk remediation process, which involves;
Find – The first step is to find, which involves using scans and tests to identify and detect the vulnerabilities within the organization’s systems.
Prioritize – The business will prioritize and classify vulnerabilities based on the level of urgency and handle issues that pose a significant threat.
Fix – involves fixing and resolving vulnerabilities through strategies such as system upgrades to resolve data breaches.
Monitoring – involves tracking and monitoring vulnerabilities to ensure they do not transform into significant threats.
From 7-22 October 2023 it’s EU Coding Week (the astute among you will note this is in fact two weeks) and this makes it is an ideal time to learn to code. You can find out more on the codeweek.eu website and you can check Apple’s website as there will be free coding sessions at Apple stores for the same period (with thousands to follow over the next six months). What language should you learn?
With so many different programming languages and, indeed, types of programming, the first consideration is which languages you should invest your time and effort in learning.
Do you want to create apps for smartphones and tablets? Would you like to design and build websites? There’s even the programming of the embedded computers which are built into everything from your TV to your car. Each area requires radically different code, so while we can’t decide which is best for you, we’ll explain where to start looking.
If you expect to be learning to code in full-time education, there’s a good case for working with the languages most commonly used in schools. Alternatively, for those who hope to employ their coding skills in the workplace, we’ll give some thought to which languages are used in industry for various applications.
Just knowing which languages to learn isn’t enough, though. So we’ll also provide some guidance on what software you need in order to learn each language and which resources and courses will help you in your quest.Resources for kids and teens
There are also plenty of coding games and toys for kids, ranging from kid-friendly DIY computer kits like the Kano to programmable robots like the Sphero SPRK+. These generally build games into the way they teach coding to help keep kids entertained as they learn.
Another option is Apple’s Swift programming language. Apple has released a free iPad app called Swift Playgrounds which aims to teach kids to code in Swift using a fun game-like environment. It works on all iPad Air and Pro models, the regular iPad from 2023, plus iPad mini 2 and later. They will also need to be running iOS 10 or later.Programming by blocks
One of the two most commonly used programming languages in schools is Scratch, which was developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. Unlike most languages, Scratch programs are created by linking blocks together on screen.
This allows students to learn about the structure of programs and the concept of algorithms but without having to learn syntax, that is the exact textual format of an instruction in a conventional language. In addition, because the blocks resemble jigsaw pieces, their shapes reduce the likelihood of blocks being connected together when the end result would be nonsensical.
Despite this unconventional approach, Scratch genuinely is a procedural language, as are most of the popular computer languages. In other words, it allows the programmer to define a sequence of operations for the computer to carry out.
Scratch is often used in primary schools but it would be unwise to set an upper age limit, above which a student should learn a conventional language instead. It’s also used in secondary schools, indeed it could be beneficial for anyone who has never coded before, while recognising that it will always be a stepping stone to the types of language that are used in business and industry.
Scratch is available free of charge. You can either download a version to use offline or you can create programs directly on the website.
Another block-based language that is gaining popularity is Google Blockly – see our guide to getting started with Blockly. The BBC micro:bit also uses a block-based programming environment called Microsoft Block Editor. The BASIC alternative
When there was last a big push on teaching computing in schools, BASIC was the language of choice since it was available on the BBC Micro as well as on many of the cheaper home computers of the time. Although it was designed as an educational language, though, BASIC’s continued use for learning to programme is the subject of some debate.
Some would argue that it’s an old-fashioned language that will get students into habits they’ll find it hard to break when they start to learn newer languages. Others say that, because it’s such a simple language, it better illustrates the way processors work than more modern languages and is useful because it provides this insight.
Pragmatically, BASIC is still taught in schools quite extensively because it’s more familiar to a large number of teachers. What’s more, in contrast to the “bad habits” argument, there are suggestions that it’s useful to learn different programming paradigms, something that studying newer languages alone won’t provide. All of this seems to suggest that BASIC is still a good language to learn, at least as part of the mix.
In its 50 years, BASIC has spawned a huge number of dialects. Newer versions of BASIC include concepts such as block structure and object orientation but there’s a lot to be said for sticking with a version that is true to its roots.
For a fairly basic BASIC, but with extensions to carry out graphics programming, SmallBASIC (not the same as another variant of the same name published by Microsoft) would be a good choice – it’s freely available from http://smallbasic.sourceforge.net.
Note that Microsoft’s Visual Basic (formerly called Visual Basic .NET and commonly still referred to as such), is very different from BASIC of old. Indeed the current version of Visual Basic is object oriented (which we’ll explain in the next section) and is another possible contender if you want to learn this type of language.Object-oriented languages
The second of today’s most popular languages in education is Python. Unlike BASIC, this adheres to current thinking in programming such as block structure and object orientation. As such, it’s similar to C++ and C# which are widely used in industry (together with their predecessor C), although Python is generally considered as easier to learn.
We’re not going to delve into exactly what object orientation actually means – after all that will be something you’d become familiar with if you were to learn Python – but suffice to say that expertise in this type of language would be a very useful skill. You can download a Python interpreter from
If you’re interested in learning Python, there are numerous online courses available including the Complete Python Bootcamp and The Complete Python Developer Course.
This is another object-orientated language so would be a logical progression from Python or, if you don’t fancy learning two similar languages, an alternative to Python, albeit one that’s not as commonly used in schools. If you want to learn Java you have several options. The Java Development Kit (JDK) is freely available and runs on your PC.
However, if you specifically want to try your hand at Android app development, you’ll need Android Studio and, in addition to the Java language, you’ll need to learn about the Android environment. You can
Most of today’s most popular languages are object-oriented. Although the syntax varies between the different languages, having learned one such language you’ll be in a good position to migrate to another. If you want to discover which are the most commonly used in industry today, take a look at the Ttiobe index.Web programming – HTML and CSS
Coding for the web is very different from everything we’ve seen so far since, at its most basic, it uses a completely different type of language. Even so, it’s a vital skill to learn.
To create the simplest of web pages you’d use a language called HTML (and ideally the latest version, HTML5) which stands for HyperText Markup Language. As a markup language, it doesn’t provide a list of instruction that are executed in sequence as procedural languages do but, instead, it describes how text and images are displayed on screen.
This is just a simple example and it gets more involved when you start to add graphics, tables and links, but the concept of tags applies throughout.
Most web browsers will allow you to see the HTML source code that generated the page you’re viewing. However, going beyond this, dedicated HTML editors (e.g. CoffeeCup Free HTML Editor from
In addition to writing HTML code, unless you’re working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you’ll also need some graphics design skills. While we need to mention this to present the full picture, it would be stretching a point to refer to this aspect of web design as coding.
A webpage created using HTML alone will be static, but other languages allow you to create dynamic content. The very first step in this direction is the use of another language called CSS which stands for Cascaded Style Sheets.
We’ve seen how text can be turned into a header in HTML and, in the simplest of cases, the browser will use its own default font, size and colour for each level of heading. HTML does allow you to define these characteristics yourself but CSS provides a better way.
A separate CSS file defines exactly how each of the heading levels appears, making it easy to alter the appearance of an HTML document purely by specifying a different CSS file. Using a CSS file, every page on a company website can be given the same corporate look and feel without having to repeat the formatting information in every single HTML file.
The next stage in making web pages dynamic is to add code that responds to the user’s actions. This sort of dynamic code is executed, for example, when you login to a website.
There are hundreds of online HTML courses, including Build Responsive Real World Websites with HTML 5 and CSS3, Learn to Build Beautiful HTML5 and CSS3 Websites in One Month, and Learn Web Designing & HTML 5/CSS3 Essentials in Four Hours.Learning Resources
You don’t have to go it alone if you want to learn to code as there’s plenty of help out there. Many would-be programmers will already be learning to code at school, college or university but there are plenty of resources, either for those not in full-time education, or for those who want to augment their formal education.
The most easily accessible are the myriad online programming courses for just about any modern language you could imagine. As well as Googling for your preferred language, be sure to take a look at Codecademy. You should also check out Udemy, which has a broad range of online courses including plenty for coding.
Also look at adult education courses at your local colleges because being able to interact with a lecturer and chat with other students makes the learning experience so much easier. While some colleges only provide courses on using computers and software, some do offer evening programming courses at reasonable prices.
A concept that can benefit students in primary and secondary schools is the coding club. These are free, independent programming clubs for young people, that are led by volunteers and often sponsored by industry, that aim to supplement the teaching given in class.
Take a look at The Code Club and CoderDojo, both of which tend to concentrate on the languages most used in schools, and Apps for Good that teaches young people to create apps.

I’ve been asked how to convert a PowerPoint to DVD, Flash, or PDF so many times by my co-workers that I am finally going to just write a tutorial on how to do it! There are many occasions when you don’t have access to a computer running Microsoft PowerPoint when giving a presentation and in those cases it might be easier to load a DVD, play a movie file like flash or show a PDF document off an iPad.
Converting a presentation to DVD is great because it’s playable on any DVD player in the world, whether it be a laptop, desktop, or stand-alone DVD player. Converting to PDF is good for those who want to send the presentation slides electronically, but don’t want people to be able to edit or modify the slides. Finally, converting to Flash or video is useful for those who want to embed the presentation on a web site or simply show it using media player software.
Table of Contents
Converting to video is also a nice because you can then upload those videos to YouTube or Facebook for sharing. Converting to MP4 format will allow you to enjoy PowerPoint presentations on your smartphone, tablet or other mobile device! So let’s get into it.Convert PowerPoint to PDF
In the save as dialog, go ahead and choose PDF from the Save as type dropdown box. By default, it will be a standard size PDF, which means it can be used for printing or online publishing. If you want a smaller size PDF, choose Minimum size (online publishing).Convert PowerPoint to Flash or Video
If you’re looking for a free way to convert PowerPoint to video or flash, you have a couple of options. The first method is pretty much the same as how we saved our presentation to PDF format.
The second method involves taking a completed presentation and uploading it to a site called AuthorStream. You have to sign up to use the service, but it’s free and definitely worth it. AuthorStream will also keep any audio recordings that you may have in the presentation.
Once you have it uploaded and it is converted, you will see a dropdown for Download and one for Video. Under download, you can convert the presentation to Flash and under video you can convert it to an MP4 video (up to 5 minutes for free).
In addition to AuthorStream, you can check out Slideshare, iSpring, and Zoho Show for getting flash versions of your PowerPoint presentation. You can then embed them into your blog or website.
If you want to convert the Windows Movie Video to another format, you can use online video conversion tools or third-party software like HandBrake. Feel free to read my previous post where I explain the concept of transcoding and video file formats.Convert PowerPoint to DVD
Getting your PowerPoint presentation onto a DVD is also fairly simple once you get it into video format. So first you’ll have to follow the instructions above to get you video into any video format and then you can follow the directions to burn the video to DVD.
The easiest way to do this on Windows without any additional software is to use Windows DVD Maker, which is included with Windows Vista Home Premium/Ultimate and Windows 7 Home Premium/Professional/Ultimate. The software was removed in Windows 8 for no apparent reason. I’ll mention a third-party program below for Windows 8 users.
In Windows DVD Maker, first you have to choose the photos and videos that you want to include on the DVD. I just chose my short PowerPoint presentation and you can see it tells you how much time is left on the DVD and lets you change the title of the DVD.
On the next screen, you can choose from different menu styles and you can also change the menu text, customize the menu and preview the menu. Go ahead and play around with the options and settings until you are happy with the results. For example, I got rid of Scenes because I only have one video on the DVD and it doesn’t make any sense.
I won’t go into detail here about how to use the program namely because it’s super simple to use, but also because they have enough support docs on their website. This program also has a lot more options than Windows DVD Maker, so it might be a better choice if you want more customization of your DVD.
If you have the feeling Snapchat adds a new feature every few weeks, you’re not wrong, especially at the moment. It has only been a couple of weeks since the release of Snap Maps and now Snapchat has released new voice filters and backgrounds. This guide will show you where to find the newly added features and how to use them.
How to Find and Use Snapchats Snap Map.
Snapchat always seems to be a step ahead of the curb when it comes to new features and innovation, leaving Facebook and Instagram scrambling to implement an almost clone like feature at a later date. With the dust only just settling on the last big Snapchat feature Snap Maps, it’s quite surprising to see another feature added so quickly. Perhaps this is a strategy to overwhelm Facebook and Instagram with clone projects…. Whatever Snapchats reason for this, it’s always a great outcome for users, new features usually means more fun, so let’s find out a little more about Snapchat Backgrounds and Voice Filters.
Before we begin showing you how to use the new features, you will need to make sure you have the latest version of Snapchat installed on your mobile device, version 10.12.0.0. If you don’t, you won’t be able to use voice filters or backgrounds. To get the latest version, simply open your phone or tablet’s app store and check for updates. Once you have Snapchat version 10.12.0.0 you’ll have full access to all the features, regardless of whereabouts in the world you live. The Other Feature we Didn’t Mention in the Title. (Snap Links)
As well as adding backgrounds and voice filters, Snapchat has also added the ability to share links with friends in Snaps. This is probably the most useful feature included in the recent update, however, it is more a utility than a fun feature, never the less, it’s a handy option to have. To Share a link in a Snap, tap the new Paperclip icon in the vertical toolkit menu (the same toolbar that allows you to add text to snaps)
Once you’ve tapped the paperclip icon, you will need to give Snapchat permission to use the clipboard, after you have approved access, you can manually type a URL or more easily paste one into the box. When you have finished putting together your link inclusive snap, you can send it in the same manner as you would any other snap.Finding and Using Snapchat Backgrounds.
Each time Snapchat’s features list grows, the user interface usually become slightly more crowded, making some features near impossible to find. Unless you know exactly where you’re looking or more likely if you stumble on to them! The first feature we will be locating, is the Snap Backgrounds feature, which allows you to add custom backgrounds to your snaps.
To find Snapchat backgrounds you will need to take a snap, then tap the Scissors icon in the vertical toolkit menu (the same toolbar that allows you to add text to snaps) on this submenu look for the newly added backdrop icon, it looks like a square with slanted lines through it. Now, all you have to do is choose a background you think works with your image, once that’s done you can send your snap. For now though, the background options are pretty boring, however, Snapchat will no doubt add more as time goes on.Finding and Using Snapchat Voice Filters.
The last feature and the most interesting are the newly added Snapchat Voice Filters, which allow you to change your voice to a variety of crazy sounding novelty characters. One of the more notable and highly annoying options is the Chipmunk voice, which will no doubt be a fantastic way to drive your friends mad. There are a few others you can choose from, including a sci-fi robot.
To use the new Snapchat Voice filters you will need to record a Snap, (with voice included obviously) then tap the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen. Finally, all you need to do is choose the effect you like and you are done, you can now send the snap to all your friends or post it to your Snap following.
