When you factory reset your Mac, you erase the device and reinstall a new version of macOS. You may need to do this before selling it, giving it away, or troubleshooting complex issues.

How you reset a Mac will depend on its hardware configuration and operating system version, among other factors. We’ll show you how to erase and reset a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, MacPro, or an iMac to factory settings using different techniques.

Factory Reset Mac with Apple T2 Security Chip

The T2 Security Chip is Apple’s second-generation, security-focused, custom silicon chipset for Mac computers. If your Mac has a T2 Security Chip and runs macOS Monterey, follow the steps below to reset it to factory settings.

The Mac computers listed below ship with a T2 Security Chip:

MacBook Air models launched between 2023-2023.

MacBook Pro models launched between 2023-2023.

iMac (Retina 5K, 2023)

Mac mini (2023)

Mac Pro (2023) and Mac Pro (Rack, 2023)

macOS Monterey has an “Erase Assistant” that does all the heavy lifting needed to factory reset Macs with T2 Security Chip. Simply run the assistant, sit back, and wait for it to erase your Mac’s data.

Connect your Mac to the internet and follow the steps below to reset it using the Erase Assistant.

Select the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen and select System Preferences to open the Apple menu.

Keep the System Preferences window open and select System Preferences on the menu bar. Next, select Erase All Content and Settings.

That will launch the macOS Monterey Erase Assistant.

Enter your Mac’s administrator account password and select OK or press Return on the keyboard.

Select Continue to proceed.

The Erase Assistant will remove your data, Apple ID account, third-party apps and extensions, settings & preferences, etc. The data erasure process will also remove Find My and Activation Lock. So, you can’t locate or track your Mac after the operation.

You may also be prompted to create a Time Machine backup of your data to an external hard drive.

Enter your Apple ID password and select Continue to proceed.

Select Erase All Content & Settings on the confirmation prompt to start the factory reset process.

Your Mac will shut down, come back on, and display a progress bar. Wait for a few minutes and connect your Mac to the internet (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet) when a “Hello” message appears on the screen. That’ll activate your Mac. Follow the Setup Assistant’s instructions to set up your Mac from scratch.

Disk Utility is the best tool to factory reset Intel-based Mac computers running macOS Big Sur or older. Of course, you can also use the tool to reset Apple Silicon Mac computers running macOS Monterey.

You need to boot into macOS Recovery to factory reset your Mac using Disk Utility. If you’re using an Intel-based Mac, reset its NVRAM and unpair Bluetooth devices before performing a factory reset.

For Macs with Apple Silicon or M1 chip, press and hold the power button until your Mac displays the Startup Options page. Afterward, select Options and select Continue to enter the recovery mode.

Select the admin account on the macOS Recovery page, enter the password, and select Next.

Select Disk Utility and select Continue.

Select the startup disk (Macintosh HD – Data) on the sidebar.

Can’t find the “Macintosh HD – Data” volume? Select View at the top of the Disk Utility window, select Show All Devices, and check again.

After selecting the Macintosh HD volume, select Erase on the toolbar.

Enter a name for the drive and select a preferred disk format/file system—APFS or Mac OS Extended. Disk Utility will pick the best file system/format for your Mac’s hard drive type—SSD or HDD. Select Erase Volume Group to erase your Mac’s disk drive permanently.

Select Erase if you don’t find an “Erase Volume Group” button on the page.

You may be required to provide the password to the Apple ID account linked to your Mac. When the disk erasure is complete, reinstall macOS and follow the onscreen instructions to set up your Mac.

Quit Disk Utility, return to the macOS Recovery page, and select Reinstall macOS [Monterey].

“Find My” doesn’t just help you track and locate your Apple devices. You can use the tool to remotely erase (read: reset) your devices, too. To factory reset a lost or stolen Mac, open the Find My app on any Apple device linked to the same Apple ID as the Mac, and follow the steps below.

Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad, head to the “Devices” tab, and tap your Mac.

Tap Erase This Device at the bottom of the Mac info card.

How To Delete Touch Bar Data From Macbook Pro With Touch Bar

The Touch Bar equipped MacBook Pro stores additional data for the Touch Bar and Touch ID sensor that is not erased by default if you format a Mac or reinstall MacOS system software. Thus, if you want to completely clear out and erase all Touch Bar data, you will need to manually intervene via a multi-step process to clear out Touch Bar specific data from those MacBook Pro models.

This is obviously only applicable to Macs with the Touch Bar, and it’s probably only appropriate if you plan on erasing the Mac anyway, reinstalling MacOS, resetting a Mac to factory settings, or some other similar situation where you either want all personal data removed from the Mac, or you are going to be selling a Mac or transferring ownership, or even sending it in for service. Aside from those situations there is likely no need to ever delete or erase Touch Bar data on the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and attempting to do so can lead to unintended problems or data loss.

Want to clear out all Touch ID information and configuration data from a Mac with Touch Bar? Remember, this may cause data loss therefore only do this if you intend to erase all data on the Mac. Perform this action at your own risk.

Here’s how to erase Touch Bar data on a recently erased Mac:

Restart the Mac and immediately hold down Command + R keys to boot into Recovery Mode

At the “MacOS Utilities” screen, pull down the “Utilities” menu and choose “Terminal”

At the command line, type the following and then hit return:

xartutil --erase-all

Type “yes” when asked if you want to proceed

Pull down the  Apple menu and choose “Restart” to reboot the Mac as usual, or proceed with other tasks like reinstalling macOS or formatting the mac if desired

Once the Mac has restarted the Touch Bar data will be removed.

As mentioned earlier, on newer Macs any remaining data on the Mac may be rendered inaccessible and therefore this should only be performed after the Mac has been reset, if at all.

And yes you must boot the Mac from Recovery Mode (or Internet Recovery) to accomplish this task, thus you may want to do it before resetting a Mac to factory default settings or performing other similar maneuvers to reinstall Mac OS or to completely erase the computer.

Note this is erasing Touch Bar data, it is NOT force refreshing Touch Bar on the Mac and thus is really not a troubleshooting step, though it’ll undoubtedly be used as one for some unusual Touch Bar situations.

For those wondering, if you try to run this command on a Mac that does not have a Touch Bar it will not work, because there is no Touch Bar. You will get an error like the following:

“xartutil: ERROR: this hardware does not support the xART recovery service”

How To Reformat Your Macbook Without A Password

If you want to sell your MacBook, it’s considered good practice to reformat the internal storage before reinstalling macOS. That reduces the chances of having any personal data compromised. But what if you can’t remember the password to your Mac’s user account?

Reformatting the internal storage on a Mac with a forgotten password depends on its model, and if you’ve signed into it with an Apple ID or not.

If you use your MacBook with just an offline user account, you can quickly reformat it in macOS Recovery and set up macOS from scratch even if you’ve forgotten its password.

But if you’ve signed into your Mac with an Apple ID and have Find My Mac turned on, that might complicate things. macOS devices that run on Apple Silicon or contain the Apple T2 Security Chip deploy a feature called Activation Lock that prevents unauthorized access to macOS Recovery.

However, if you own the Mac, you can simply use your Apple ID’s passcode to reset the passcode or bypass the Activation Lock. 3. If the Mac consists of an Apple T2 Security chip and you’ve also signed into it with an Apple ID, select Forgot All Passwords? on the account selection screen and insert your Apple ID to proceed.

4. Choose Disk Utility and select Continue.

After entering macOS Recovery, you can load Disk Utility to format your MacBook.

1. Select Macintosh HD on the Disk Utility sidebar.

2. Select Erase.

3. Set Format to APFS.

4. Select Erase to format your Macbook.

5. Select Done.

After formatting your MacBook, you can reinstall macOS.

2. Select Reinstall macOS in macOS Recovery.

3. Select Macintosh HD as the target partition and work your way through the onscreen instructions to reinstall macOS.

Once you’ve finished installing macOS, you can set up your MacBook for personal use and restore backed-up data via Time Machine. Or, press Command + Q to leave the setup screen if you plan to sell it.

To show the traditional F1, F2, etc. keys, simply hold the Function (fn) key in the bottom left-hand corner of the keyboard to reveal them. These keys can be revealed within any app at any time.

Instead of tapping the brightness or volume key on the Touch Bar Control Strip, simply tap, hold and drag the slider to the desired level for a quick adjustment in one fell swoop.

Tap the chevron button to the left of the Control Strip to access an expanded list of system functions and controls.

If you tap the chevron button while in the middle of customizing the Control Strip, you’ll gain access to more system functions and controls, allowing you to customize the full expanded Control Strip.

If a Touch Bar-enabled app supports customization, you can go to View → Customize Touch Bar while using the app to configure its key layout in the Touch Bar.

While editing an app’s Control Bar settings, you can quickly switch to editing the Control Strip just by giving it a tap.

When invoking Siri via the Touch Bar, you can touch and hold the Siri key to make it listen to your commands for the duration of your touch.

When playing media on your MacBook Pro, you’ll notice a persistent media scrubber in the Touch Bar. This scrubber is present when playing music via iTunes, Safari videos, QuickTime videos, etc. You can even use it to scrub through YouTube videos while watching via Safari.

What makes the scrubber nice is that it is always available when eligible media is playing, even if that media isn’t a part of the top-most window. No matter where you are on your Mac, you’ll see a handy media key on the left side of the Control Strip in the Touch Bar area. Simply tap that key to reveal media controls.

When used with Windows, the Touch Bar will display basic controls for things like keyboard brightness, screen brightness and volume. You also get access to the Escape key and pressing and holding the physical Function (fn) key will reveal a set of 12 function keys. You won’t of course, gain any of the other dynamic benefits that the Touch Bar is known for in macOS.
