Factory Reset Mac with Apple T2 Security Chip

The T2 Security Chip is Apple’s second-generation, security-focused, custom silicon chipset for Mac computers. If your Mac has a T2 Security Chip and runs macOS Monterey, follow the steps below to reset it to factory settings.

The Mac computers listed below ship with a T2 Security Chip:

MacBook Air models launched between 2023-2023.

MacBook Pro models launched between 2023-2023.

iMac (Retina 5K, 2023)

Mac mini (2023)

Mac Pro (2023) and Mac Pro (Rack, 2023)

Refer to this Apple Support document for a comprehensive list of Mac computers with the Apple T2 Security Chip. Better yet, check your Mac’s chipset configuration using the System Information tool.

macOS Monterey has an “Erase Assistant” that does all the heavy lifting needed to factory reset Macs with T2 Security Chip. Simply run the assistant, sit back, and wait for it to erase your Mac’s data.

Connect your Mac to the internet and follow the steps below to reset it using the Erase Assistant.

Select the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen and select System Preferences to open the Apple menu.

Keep the System Preferences window open and select System Preferences on the menu bar. Next, select Erase All Content and Settings.

That will launch the macOS Monterey Erase Assistant.

Enter your Mac’s administrator account password and select OK or press Return on the keyboard.

        Select Continue to proceed.

The Erase Assistant will remove your data, Apple ID account, third-party apps and extensions, settings & preferences, etc. The data erasure process will also remove Find My and Activation Lock. So, you can’t locate or track your Mac after the operation.

You may also be prompted to create a Time Machine backup of your data to an external hard drive.

Enter your Apple ID password and select Continue to proceed.

Select Erase All Content & Settings on the confirmation prompt to start the factory reset process.

Your Mac will shut down, come back on, and display a progress bar. Wait for a few minutes and connect your Mac to the internet (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet) when a “Hello” message appears on the screen. That’ll activate your Mac. Follow the Setup Assistant’s instructions to set up your Mac from scratch.

Factory Reset Mac Using Disk Utility

Disk Utility is the best tool to factory reset Intel-based Mac computers running macOS Big Sur or older. Of course, you can also use the tool to reset Apple Silicon Mac computers running macOS Monterey.

You need to boot into macOS Recovery to factory reset your Mac using Disk Utility. If you’re using an Intel-based Mac, reset its NVRAM and unpair Bluetooth devices before performing a factory reset.

For Macs with Apple Silicon or M1 chip, press and hold the power button until your Mac displays the Startup Options page. Afterward, select Options and select Continue to enter the recovery mode.

Select the admin account on the macOS Recovery page, enter the password, and select Next.

Select Disk Utility and select Continue.

Select the startup disk (Macintosh HD – Data) on the sidebar.

Can’t find the “Macintosh HD – Data” volume? Select View at the top of the Disk Utility window, select Show All Devices, and check again.

After selecting the Macintosh HD volume, select Erase on the toolbar.

Enter a name for the drive and select a preferred disk format/file system—APFS or Mac OS Extended. Disk Utility will pick the best file system/format for your Mac’s hard drive type—SSD or HDD. Select Erase Volume Group to erase your Mac’s disk drive permanently.

Select Erase if you don’t find an “Erase Volume Group” button on the page.

You may be required to provide the password to the Apple ID account linked to your Mac. When the disk erasure is complete, reinstall macOS and follow the onscreen instructions to set up your Mac.

Quit Disk Utility, return to the macOS Recovery page, and select Reinstall macOS [Monterey].

Remotely Factory Reset Mac on the Find My App

“Find My” doesn’t just help you track and locate your Apple devices. You can use the tool to remotely erase (read: reset) your devices, too. To factory reset a lost or stolen Mac, open the Find My app on any Apple device linked to the same Apple ID as the Mac, and follow the steps below.

Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad, head to the “Devices” tab, and tap your Mac.

Tap Erase This Device at the bottom of the Mac info card.

Tap Continue on the confirmation prompt.

Finally, tap Erase to reset or erase your Mac remotely. If your Mac is stolen/lost, type a message for anyone who finds it. Be sure to include your contact information—phone number, email address, etc.—in the display message.

Factory Reset Mac on the Web

You can remotely reset your Mac using the web client of the Find My tool. Follow the steps below to reset your Mac from another device using a web browser.

Head to the iCloud Find My iPhone website and sign in to your Apple ID.

Tap the All Devices drop-down icon and select your Mac in the list of devices.

                          Select Erase Mac.

Select Erase on the confirmation prompt.

Remotely erasing your Mac requires an internet connection, and the process isn’t always instant. The erasure starts when your (stolen or lost) Mac connects to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Note: Activation Lock remains enabled when you erase your Mac remotely. So, your Apple ID (email & password) is required to reactivate the Mac.

                            How To Clean Macbook Screen

Last Updated on August 19, 2023

Even the best and latest models of MacBook can accumulate dirt on their screens, which can really ruin the fantastic visibility they are known for.

Despite this, many MacBook owners avoid cleaning their screens for fear that they will cause damage to them. As long as you follow guidelines and use the recommended products, cleaning your screen will not cause any damage to the device.

Whether it is fingerprint markings or dust, giving your MacBook screen the occasional clean will really make a notable difference, and once you know how to do it properly, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to do!

This article will be showing you how to clean your MacBook screen without causing any damage to it!

How To Clean A MacBook Screen

The following step-by-step guide can be done on any MacBook screen, such as the MacBook Air and Pro. It can also be done on the iMac, Mac Pro, and Mac Mini.

However, it shouldn’t bed used on any MacBook that has a nano-texture glass display. There will be a separate section discussing how to clean that kind of screen at the end of this article.

                            Switch Off Your MacBook

The first thing you need to do is make sure your MacBook is switched off and has been unplugged from the wall.

                            Use A Microfiber Cloth

Then, with a microfiber cloth, you are to wipe the screen softly to remove any dust. You should not use anything else other than a microfiber cloth, as paper towels can actually scratch your screen.

Dampen The Cloth With Some Water

If you are still seeing some smudges, then dampen the cloth with some water, and lightly continue to wipe the screen. You must only dampen the cloth, not submerge it in water, and water should never be applied directly to the screen.

Use Isopropyl Alcohol For Remaining Smudges

If there are still markings and smudges on the screen, then you can use a 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution. Again, this should only be applied to the microfiber cloth and not the screen, and no other kind of cloth or paper towels should be used.

                            Let Your Laptop Air Dry

Once you have wiped your screen fully, you should let your laptop air dry.

How To Clean The Rest Of Your MacBook

If you would like to clean the rest of your MacBook, the process is very similar.

                            Switch Off Your MacBook

You must ensure that it is unplugged and switched off, and wipe all areas with a lint-free microfiber cloth. This will remove any dust that is lingering.

You Can Also Dampen The Cloth

You can also dampen the cloth for more of a clean, but you must ensure you aren’t allowing any moisture into the openings.

Use Isopropyl Alcohol Wipes For A Deep Clean

If you’d like to clean your device further, you can use 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes to do this, as well as Clorox Disinfecting Wipes.

How To Clean A Laptop With Nano-Texture Glass

Laptops with nano-texture glass offer less glare and phenomenal image quality. However, because of this, you’ll have fewer options when it comes to cleaning the screen.

Laptops with this screen can only be cleaned using the cloth that was supplied along with your iMac or Pro Display XDR.

For more of a clean, you can dampen the cloth with a 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution as mentioned in the previous method. As mentioned earlier, this should only be applied to the cloth, and not to the actual screen.

                            Final Thoughts

Cleaning your MacBook screen every so often, will ensure that all dust, dirt, and fingerprints are kept at bay, enabling you to experience the top quality that these screens are known for.

We hope you have found this step-by-step guide helpful and enjoy your newly cleaned laptop screens!

How To Delete Touch Bar Data From Macbook Pro With Touch Bar

The Touch Bar equipped MacBook Pro stores additional data for the Touch Bar and Touch ID sensor that is not erased by default if you format a Mac or reinstall MacOS system software. Thus, if you want to completely clear out and erase all Touch Bar data, you will need to manually intervene via a multi-step process to clear out Touch Bar specific data from those MacBook Pro models.

This is obviously only applicable to Macs with the Touch Bar, and it’s probably only appropriate if you plan on erasing the Mac anyway, reinstalling MacOS, resetting a Mac to factory settings, or some other similar situation where you either want all personal data removed from the Mac, or you are going to be selling a Mac or transferring ownership, or even sending it in for service. Aside from those situations there is likely no need to ever delete or erase Touch Bar data on the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and attempting to do so can lead to unintended problems or data loss.

How to Erase Touch ID Data on MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Want to clear out all Touch ID information and configuration data from a Mac with Touch Bar? Remember, this may cause data loss therefore only do this if you intend to erase all data on the Mac. Perform this action at your own risk.

Here’s how to erase Touch Bar data on a recently erased Mac:

Restart the Mac and immediately hold down Command + R keys to boot into Recovery Mode

At the “MacOS Utilities” screen, pull down the “Utilities” menu and choose “Terminal”

At the command line, type the following and then hit return:

                            xartutil --erase-all

Type “yes” when asked if you want to proceed

Pull down the  Apple menu and choose “Restart” to reboot the Mac as usual, or proceed with other tasks like reinstalling macOS or formatting the mac if desired

Once the Mac has restarted the Touch Bar data will be removed.

As mentioned earlier, on newer Macs any remaining data on the Mac may be rendered inaccessible and therefore this should only be performed after the Mac has been reset, if at all.

And yes you must boot the Mac from Recovery Mode (or Internet Recovery) to accomplish this task, thus you may want to do it before resetting a Mac to factory default settings or performing other similar maneuvers to reinstall Mac OS or to completely erase the computer.

Note this is erasing Touch Bar data, it is NOT force refreshing Touch Bar on the Mac and thus is really not a troubleshooting step, though it’ll undoubtedly be used as one for some unusual Touch Bar situations.

For those wondering, if you try to run this command on a Mac that does not have a Touch Bar it will not work, because there is no Touch Bar. You will get an error like the following:

“xartutil: ERROR: this hardware does not support the xART recovery service”

Many Mac users likely don’t know that the Touch Bar has separate data storage that is Touch Bar specific, but Apple confirms this with an article here.

How To Reformat Your Macbook Without A Password

If you want to sell your MacBook, it’s considered good practice to reformat the internal storage before reinstalling macOS. That reduces the chances of having any personal data compromised. But what if you can’t remember the password to your Mac’s user account?

Reformatting the internal storage on a Mac with a forgotten password depends on its model, and if you’ve signed into it with an Apple ID or not.

                            Table of Contents

Your Mac May Be Secured With Activation Lock

If you use your MacBook with just an offline user account, you can quickly reformat it in macOS Recovery and set up macOS from scratch even if you’ve forgotten its password.

But if you’ve signed into your Mac with an Apple ID and have Find My Mac turned on, that might complicate things. macOS devices that run on Apple Silicon or contain the Apple T2 Security Chip deploy a feature called Activation Lock that prevents unauthorized access to macOS Recovery.

However, if you own the Mac, you can simply use your Apple ID’s passcode to reset the passcode or bypass the Activation Lock. If you bought or received the Mac from someone else, you must ask the person to lift the Activation Lock remotely via chúng tôi It’s impossible to reformat the Mac otherwise.

Try Lifting the Password Before You Start

Before you start, it’s always a good idea to try and reset the password to your Mac’s user account. That allows you to back up any data on your Mac, as well as sign out from your Apple ID to minimize iCloud-related complications later. If you don’t want to do that and just want to format your Mac quickly, jump ahead to the next section.

                            Use Your Apple ID Credentials

The first method involves using your Apple ID credentials. Try logging in a total of three times into your Mac’s user account. After the third failed attempt, you should get a prompt asking you to reset the passcode using your Apple ID. Do it.

Use a Different Administrator Account If You Managed to Lift the Password

If you managed to reset the password to your Mac, perform the following actions before formatting your Mac.

Optional: Erase All Content and Settings

If your MacBook runs on macOS Monterey or later, you have a built-in option that lets you wipe all data and settings before selling it. This is purely optional; you can still format your Mac and reinstall macOS regardless.

                            How To Enter macOS Recovery

MacBooks running on Apple Silicon and Intel chipsets require different procedures to enter macOS Recovery. The following instructions assume that you haven’t reset the password to your Mac. If you have, simply insert the password whenever it’s needed.

                            Apple Silicon Macs

                            1. Shut down your MacBook.

15 Touch Bar Tips And Tricks For The New Macbook Pro

The Touch Bar is the flagship feature for the new MacBook Pro. It’s a small touch surface that offers dynamically changing content based on the current app you’re using.

The Touch bar is simple to use, but it’s somewhat deeper than it may appear at first. In this walkthrough video, we’ll discuss 15 tips and tricks for the new MacBook Pro Touch Bar to help you get started.

                            How to show function keys

To show the traditional F1, F2, etc. keys, simply hold the Function (fn) key in the bottom left-hand corner of the keyboard to reveal them. These keys can be revealed within any app at any time.

How to always show function keys for specific apps

You can quickly show the normal function keys by pressing and holding the Function (fn) key on the keyboard. But what if there’s an app that requires you to use standard function keys often?

With this setting enabled for a specific app, function keys will be displayed by default while using that app. If you press and hold the Function key while using this app, the expanded Control Strip options on the Touch Bar will be revealed.

                            Quickly adjust brightness and volume

Instead of tapping the brightness or volume key on the Touch Bar Control Strip, simply tap, hold and drag the slider to the desired level for a quick adjustment in one fell swoop.

How to customize the Touch Bar’s Control Strip

                            Access the expanded Control Strip

Tap the chevron button to the left of the Control Strip to access an expanded list of system functions and controls.

                            Customize the expanded Control Strip

If you tap the chevron button while in the middle of customizing the Control Strip, you’ll gain access to more system functions and controls, allowing you to customize the full expanded Control Strip.

How to customize the app region of the Touch Bar for favorite apps

If a Touch Bar-enabled app supports customization, you can go to View → Customize Touch Bar while using the app to configure its key layout in the Touch Bar.

How to customize the Control Strip while editing an app region

While editing an app’s Control Bar settings, you can quickly switch to editing the Control Strip just by giving it a tap.

                            Escape key

The escape key is located in the upper left-hand corner of the Control Bar, but it doesn’t align perfectly with the hardware keyboard keys directly below it. But if you’re a touch typist, your Escape key presses will still register, even if your finger doesn’t fully make contact with the key.

                            Sleep and wake

The Touch Bar will dim after 60 seconds, and time out completely 15 seconds later. To wake the Touch Bar, tap the Touch Bar, trackpad, or press a key on the keyboard

                            Trackpad + Touch Bar

macOS allows you to interface with both the trackpad and the Touch Bar simultaneously. This means that you can do things like move a shape in Pixelmator while, at the same time, changing its color or the size of its border.

Take screenshots of the Touch Bar

Zac provided us with an excellent how-to that shows how to create Touch Bar screenshots. To use this functionality, you’ll need to run macOS 10.12.2 Beta 3 or later. It’s now available for public beta testers.

                            Make Siri listen

When invoking Siri via the Touch Bar, you can touch and hold the Siri key to make it listen to your commands for the duration of your touch.

                            Persistent media scrubber

When playing media on your MacBook Pro, you’ll notice a persistent media scrubber in the Touch Bar. This scrubber is present when playing music via iTunes, Safari videos, QuickTime videos, etc. You can even use it to scrub through YouTube videos while watching via Safari.

What makes the scrubber nice is that it is always available when eligible media is playing, even if that media isn’t a part of the top-most window. No matter where you are on your Mac, you’ll see a handy media key on the left side of the Control Strip in the Touch Bar area. Simply tap that key to reveal media controls.

You can use the Touch Bar on a Boot Camp Windows installation

When used with Windows, the Touch Bar will display basic controls for things like keyboard brightness, screen brightness and volume. You also get access to the Escape key and pressing and holding the physical Function (fn) key will reveal a set of 12 function keys. You won’t of course, gain any of the other dynamic benefits that the Touch Bar is known for in macOS.
