How To Fix ‘Failed To Add Member’ Issue On Groupme
Microsoft’s group messaging app, GroupMe, has picked up quite a following especially with the younger crowd. It is especially useful to keep up to date with school work, assignments, or even just catch up with friends. Unfortunately, users have noticed recently that they cannot add new members to their groups. This being the crux of the app, naturally, people are annoyed.
If you too have encountered this, read on to find out how you can solve the ‘failed to add member’ problem on GroupMe.
What is GroupMe
GroupMe is a messaging platform that focuses primarily on group messages. While users can also directly message each other, this is less common. GroupMe is cross-platform accessible making it a good way to stay in touch with users on different platforms. A unique aspect of the program is that you do not even need to have the app to chat with your friends. You can add a friend using just their phone number, and that person will be able to send and receive SMSs to the group.
Why can’t you add people to a group
Recently a slew of complaints has popped up touting the same concern. When you try to add someone to a group, you get the message ‘*Name cannot be added’. The problem does seem to be a bug preventing users from adding people to groups.
It has been noticed that the problem only surfaces when adding people that do not have the GroupMe app installed on their device. This contradicts the app’s claim that users do not need to have the app to communicate with their friends. It should be noted that you cannot add people to a closed group in which you are not the creator.
Possible fixes for the problem
Here are some possible fixes that should help you add your friends to a group. If one of them doesn’t work, do try the others.
Restart the device
As easy as the solution is, a simple restart (soft reset) is all you need to fix a bug nagging you, whether it’s an issue with the system app or a 3rd-party app like GroupMe. Press and hold the power button to get the Restart option. Tap on Restart to reboot your phone. Let it restart. Open the GroupMe app again and try to add a member now.
Refresh the app
If you have tried to add a person to a group and get the message ‘*Name cannot be added’, don’t worry. It seems like the most common fix to this is simply going back to the main (conversations) page of the app and refreshing it.
To refresh the page just swipe downward. You should see the page reload.
Now go back to that group. You should see a notification tell you that the person has been invited. Copy the link provided and send it to the person.
Share the group link
If you still cannot add the person even after they have used the download link, you can try sharing the invite to your group. Note: If the group is closed, only the creator of the group can send the group invite link. However, for open groups, any of the members can send out the link.
To send the group invite link first launch the GroupMe app and tap on the group in question.
Now tap on the three dots in the top right corner. Select ‘Share group’. Choose the app that you would like to use to send out the group invite.
Try using the website
If you don’t have your phone around, you can access your GroupMe groups via the GroupMe website. Some users have found that adding members to groups via the GroupMe website circumvents the problem.
To add a member using the website, first log in to the Website with your GroupMe credentials. Now select the group that you would like to add the person to.
Check if the person has left the group
GroupMe does not let you add users that have left a particular group, back to that same group. While the users who left can always opt to join back in, they cannot be added back by someone else.
Clear app’s cache, and data (Android only)
If clearing the cache didn’t help, you can clear its data. This removes all the data the app has stored on your device, and thus gives it a clean start again. This should fix the issue, we guess.
Delete the app and re-install (Android and iOS)
Factory Reset
If it is very important for you to use GroupMe and none of the features above are working for you, then the Hard Reset of your device is the last option for you that can fix the issue.
Yes, it’s a very painful option as resetting the device will delete everything on your phone and you will need to install all the apps again that didn’t come preinstalled. You will need to set up the phone and apps again, too. Also, be sure to back up everything you need to.
Here’s how to do a factory reset on Android.
Here’s how to do a factory reset on iOS.
Is there a limit on the number of people that can be in a group?
GroupMe allows up to 500 people to be in a single group. However, they claim that any more than 200 will make the group too noisy. This is also why they have a limit on the number of group members.
In order to remain in a group, each member must reply at least once in the group. This helps confirm that all the members of the group are active.
How To Fix Sound Delay On Tv? 8 Proven Ways
It might not be a pleasant experience if the audio lags while streaming video on TV. The issue is generally due to poor signal quality or the use of an inappropriate audio format. However, trying to play an unsupported video codec might also be culpable.
The sound delay crops up when there is a significant time gap in the digital to analog-conversion of audio-video signals. Or in some cases, the cables used for transmitting audio may not support a higher bandwidth resulting in sound delay.
Luckily, the issue can be easily fixed with minor tweaks on the sound settings of your TV. You can even set the desired audio transfer rate that perfectly syncs with the video.
Since the sound delay problem on TV is not much of a hardware issue, making a few adjustments to the sound settings should fix the problem. However, you can always restart your TV and sound system as a preliminary fix. Also, don’t forget to check the connection between your TV and sound system.
Here, we have compiled a list of 8 ways to troubleshoot sound delay on TV. Let’s get straight into them.
The channel you are watching may be broadcasting content with delayed sound. So, the first thing you must do is to change the TV channel. If you face the issue only with a particular channel or every channel you watch, there is a problem with the TV signal. Please get in touch with the service provider.
Next, you can change the TV source. If you are streaming through a set-top box over an HDMI connection, stream a video through USB mode. If there is no audio delay while streaming through USB mode, contact the cable service provider and ask them to look into the problem.
However, if the cable provider reports everything as fine on their side, there is likely a problem with your TV. Please move to further fixes discussed below.
If there is sound delay only when streaming particular apps like Netflix or Hulu, there is probably a problem with the app itself. Clearing the cache and app data will help the application run smoothly and fix audio delay issues. Also, updating the application to the latest version can help. Likewise, check if you have a stable Internet connection.
Steps to clear cache data are quite similar in most TVs. Here, we are taking reference to the Samsung Smart TV for elucidation purposes.
You need to set the proper audio delay if you are using a soundbar or home theater system with your TV. Generally, 0 milliseconds is a preferred audio delay on the soundbar because using the audio delay settings on external speakers as well as the TV can create conflicts. Once you set the audio delay to zero on your soundbar, you can select the required delay on your TV.
Once you confirm the audio delay settings of external speakers, you need to adjust the audio settings on your TV. The audio settings should match the audio you are playing on the TV. Else, you may experience audio that is out of sync.
The ideal audio format for your TV is PCM. After setting the output audio to PCM, you should have no audio lag issue. Steps to change the audio format are similar in most TVs. Here we have taken the reference of Samsung TV and LG TV.
Some TV manufacturers like Samsung and LG also provide a built-in option to change the audio transfer rate. With this, you can solve the lip-sync problem in your video. You can either delay or speed up the audio rate as per your requirement.
If your TV has a Game mode available, disabling it can help fix the sound delay on the TV. While your TV is in gaming mode, there is no overhead of additional image processing that helps reduce video lags, but the sound gets delayed. In such a case, disabling gaming mode can help.
Here, we are referencing Samsung TV to illustrate the steps to disable the Gaming mode.
Resetting sound settings can come in handy if you need help figuring out the best sound configuration for your TV or have misconfigured the audio settings. It will reset the customized sound profile on your TV, thus solving the issues with the sound delay.
Follow these steps to reset sound settings on your Samsung TV:
Outdated firmware also causes sound delays on TV. So, updating the TV firmware will solve if the delayed sound was due to a bug or glitch in the existing TV firmware. Many users in the community forum reported that they solved the issue after a firmware update. So, give it a try. You can consult our comprehensive guide on updating the TV firmware for different TV brands.
How To Fix A Laptop That Won’T Turn On
However, it’s important to take a deep breath and run through what the potential causes might be. If it’s one of the six below, we’ve included information on how to hopefully get it up and running again.
1. Check the power supply LaptopsThere are various things that can go wrong here. You might have plugged in a power supply from a different laptop. Just because the connector fits, doesn’t mean it’s the right one. Laptops require a specific voltage, and they don’t all use the same. And even if the voltage from the power supply is correct, it may not deliver enough amps to power your laptop and charge its battery.
Check that the power supply is indeed the correct one for your laptop and is outputting the right voltage and amps. Stickers or markings on both the power supply and laptop should confirm this.
If your laptop is relatively modern and charges over USB-C, make sure you’re connecting the charger to the right USB port. Some laptops are particularly picky about having the official charger, especially Huawei MateBooks, so not just any USB-C power supply will do.
If it’s the correct charger, next check the fuse in the plug. Use a screwdriver to remove the fuse and swap it for one that’s known to be good. If you have a spare power cable that will plug into your power supply, this is a much quicker way to test that it isn’t the fuse at fault.
Check over the wire itself, as power supplies can have a hard life, especially if you carry them everywhere. Weak points are at the ends where it joins the black brick and at the plug which connects to the laptop. If you can see the coloured wires inside the black outer protection, it could be time to buy a new power supply unit (PSU).
If you’re having problems with a touchpad, it’s worth checking out our guide to fixing a cursor that’s not moving.
PCsPC power supplies can also be problematic. It’s unlikely you’ll have a spare one that you can swap in to check, so first test the fuse in the plug. There’s also a fuse inside the PSU itself, but it will require you to take it out of your PC (a pain) and then remove the metal case to check if that’s the problem.
One of the most common PC power supply issues is that the PC will turn off unexpectedly rather than fail to start up at all.
If the LED is on – showing that power is reaching the power supply – make sure the power button in your PC case is properly connected and working.
You can short the appropriate motherboard pins together (check which ones in your motherboard manual) to eliminate the power button from the equation. Some motherboards even have a built-in power button. So take the side off your PC’s case and have a look for one.
2. Check the screen LaptopsIf your computer’s power LED lights up and you can hear the hard disk or fan(s) whirring, but there’s no image on the screen, then make the room dark and check that there isn’t a very faint image on the screen.
It’s easy to think a laptop isn’t booting when in fact, the screen backlight has failed.
Older laptops which don’t use LED backlights have inverters, which can stop working.
Replacing an inverter is difficult and it’s crucial you buy the right replacement part. As inverters aren’t exactly cheap, you can’t afford to get it wrong. It’s a job best left for the professionals, but as your laptop is likely to be old, it’s probably time to buy a new one.
If your laptop appears to be booting fine, but there’s no image at all, the LCD panel could be at fault. Replacing a laptop screen is possible, but difficult, and screens can also be costly.
However, before jumping to that conclusion, disconned any external displays (including projectors and monitors) to make sure they’re not stopping your laptop from booting into Windows.
The Windows login screen might even be showing on a second screen that’s turned off, and you might assume the laptop – or Windows – is broken, but it’s simply that you can’t see the login screen.
PCsThere isn’t much you can do to fix a broken PC monitor, but it’s easy – or easier – to swap the power cable and HDMI (or DisplayPort) cable, or even the whole monitor to see if that’s the reason you don’t see the Windows login screen.
3. Unplug and removable USB drives or memory cardsA classic culprit here is a USB drive or memory card left inserted into a USB port or card reader. Typically you’ll see an error message such as “Operating system not found” which can lead to unnecessary panic.
For the majority of the time, it means the BIOS is set to try booting from removable storage drives (including cards) before the internal hard drive.
It could also be a disc left in the DVD or Blu-ray drive, so check those too.
4. Try a rescue discIf none of the above has worked, you can try booting from a rescue disk or USB drive.
If you have one, the Windows DVD can be used, but otherwise you can download (using another computer – obviously) a rescue disc image and either burn it to a CD or DVD, or extract it to a USB flash drive. You can then boot from this and attempt to fix the problem with Windows.
If a virus is causing the problem, use a rescue disc from an anti-virus provider as this will include scanning tools which can find and remove the malware.
5. Boot into Safe ModeEven if you can’t boot into Windows, you might be able to get into safe mode. Press F8 as your laptop is starting up and you’ll get a menu offering to boot into Safe Mode. Here’s how to enter safe mode. That won’t work in Windows 10 though, as you need to be in Windows before you can get to safe mode. In that case, you’ll need to boot from a rescue disc or drive as described above.
If you can enter safe mode, you might be able to undo any changes that caused your laptop or PC to stop booting. You could try uninstalling any new programs that you recently installed, uninstall a driver that was recently updated, or create a new user account if the account is corrupt.
Here’s a more detailed guide on how to fix a corrupt user profile.
If you see an option to repair your computer, try that.
6. Check for faulty or incompatible hardwareIf you’ve just installed some new memory or another piece of hardware, it might be preventing your computer from booting. Remove it (reinstalling the old memory if necessary) and try again.
If your motherboard has a LED readout showing POST codes, search the manual or online to find out what the code shown means.
Often it can be tricky to get a newly built PC to boot. The best tip here is to disconnect everything except the bare minimum needed to boot to the BIOS. All you need is a:
Motherboard
CPU (with heatsink attached)
Graphics card (if there’s a graphics output on the motherboard, remove any plug-in graphics cards)
One stick of memory (remove any others, and leave the single stick in slot 0 or whichever the manual recommends)
Power supply
Monitor
All other hardware is unnecessary: you don’t need a hard drive or any other components for the PC to start.
Common reasons why a newly built PC won’t boot are:
Occasionally, people have found that removing the drive and putting it in the freezer for a couple of hours (in a freezer bag) does the trick.
However, this is usually a temporary fix and you should have a second drive on hand to quickly back up or copy any files off the drive that you need.
If you can’t get the drive going again, it’s time to start afresh with a new hard drive. In fact, you’re better off buying an SSD. Hopefully you have a recent backup of all your important files!
To set up your PC to turn itself off automatically, here’s how to schedule Windows 10 shutdown.
