If you want to open RAR files on Windows 11, you can use almost any archiver software that’s compatible.

Although most archiver software can open RAR archives, they can’t create RAR data elements.

To open RAR archives without WinRAR on Windows 11, you can always use online converters to transform them accordingly.

Archives are great if you want to compress or group your files without compromising on the quality, but also reduce the size considerably.

There are many different archive formats, and ZIP is probably the most popular one. While the ZIP format is supported by default on Windows, that’s not the case with others.

Besides ZIP, the RAR format is also popular, but this format isn’t supported by default on Windows 11, which makes it harder to open.

This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to open RAR archives on Windows 11 and to prove that, we’re going to show you the easiest way to open them.

What is a RAR file?

RAR is an archive file and it’s used to hold multiple elements while also compressing them. This is a proprietary format, so it doesn’t work with all applications.

Even though you can’t create RAR files without specialized software, you can still open them with a variety of different applications.

Does RAR offer better compression than ZIP?

RAR files offer better compression than their ZIP counterparts, and according to tests, this format has a 26.53% better compression rate compared to ZIP.

File size after compression (Source: PeaZip)

Regarding the compression speed, the RAR format is slower when compared to ZIP when creating archives.

The extraction speed of the RAR files is slightly lower when using hard drive storage, while the extraction speed is better on SSDs.

Keep in mind that these values greatly vary depending on the archiving software that you’re using.

How can I open RAR files on Windows 11?

1. Use third-party software 1.1 Open RAR files with WinZip: 1.2 Open RAR files with 7-Zip:

This method might not be the most convenient, but luckily, you can open RAR files directly by doing the following:

You can also set RAR files to open by default with 7-Zip by doing the following:

Opening RAR files on Windows 11 isn’t possible without third-party software, so many are using 7-Zip to open RAR files.

2. Use an online file converter

1. Go to Cloudconvert’s RAR to ZIP page.

Expert tip:

4. Wait while the file is uploaded and processed. This can take a while depending on your upload speed and the size of the RAR file.

7. After downloading the ZIP file, you can open it like any other file.

If you want to open RAR files on your Windows 11 device without having to download any third-party apps, you can use an online converter. When using an online converter such as Cloudconvert, all you need to do is upload your file onto it, convert it into the desired format, and then download the file to your PC. The downloaded file will be in a format that can be opened by your device.

NOTE

What are the differences between RAR and ZIP?

The biggest difference between RAR and ZIP is that the latter is an open-source format, and it can work with any file archiving software. Almost all operating systems have native support for ZIP format, so you don’t need specialized software to open it.

On the other hand, RAR isn’t an open-source format, and while you can open these files with certain applications, you can create them only with the WinRAR software.

Although WinRAR is proprietary software, it never expires, so you can continue using it indefinitely.

The RAR format offers a better compression rate due to a different compression algorithm, and as for encryption, both formats support both 128-bit and 256-bit encryption.

Besides some differences in compression rate, and compatibility with different software and operating systems, RAR and ZIP formats aren’t that different.

What applications can I use to extract RAR files?

RAR files can be opened by almost any file archiver software, and if you’re looking to do so, you might want to try some of these tools:

However, if you want to compress files to a RAR archive, then your only option is to use WinRAR software since it’s the only software that can achieve good results consistently.

Windows doesn’t support RAR files out of the box, but you will be able to open them on Windows 11 by following the instructions from this guide.

No matter if you want to share holiday pictures with your family and need a compressed file, or you want to store valuable documents without cluttering up space on your HDD, using archive files is the best way forward.

How To Open Mdi Files

An MDI file, which stands for Microsoft Document Imaging, is a proprietary Microsoft image format used for storing images of scanned documents created by the Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) program. The program was included with Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007. It was discontinued in Office 2010 and above. It has basically been replaced by the Windows Fax and Scan service.

Even though MODI was not included with Office 2010, it can still be installed with Office 2010 in a couple of different ways that I will explain further in the article.

Table of Contents

If you have any of the versions of Office installed that include MODI, the easiest way to view an MDI file is to just install MODI and open the file. If you have Office 2010, you can either install MODI or use third-party tools to view or convert the MDI file.

It’s also worth noting that if you have Microsoft OneNote installed on your computer, you can use it to open MDI files without needing to install MODI. OneNote can also perform OCR, so if you were using MODI for OCR, you can now use OneNote instead.

Install MODI in Office XP, 2003, 2007

This will install MODI and you can now use it to scan, view, annotate and OCR documents. You can open the BMP file and then save it out in a different format like TIFF using MODI.

Install MODI with Office 2010

If you have Office 2010 installed, you can still install MODI, but you’ll have to use older media in order to install it. The first way is to simply download a free download from Microsoft called SharePoint Designer 2007. It’s a free download and comes bundled with MODI. When you go to install it, however, you deselect everything except for Microsoft Office Document Imaging like shown below.

The other way to install MODI with Office 2010 is to use older Office 2007 media. If you can get your hands on an Office 2007 DVD, then you can run the install, choose Customize and do the same thing as shown above.

Convert MDI to TIFF or PDF

If you want to convert the MDI file to another format like TIFF or PDF, you don’t necessarily need to use MODI. Microsoft has a free tool called the MDI to TIFF File Converter, which is a simple command line tool.

Once you download and install it, open a command prompt and navigate to the install directory by typing in the following command:

cd %ProgramFiles(x86)%modiconv

Once there, you can type in mdi2tif – help to see how to use the program. I would suggest simply taking your MDI files and copying them into the C:Program Files(x86)modiconv folder before using the tool. If you do this, it will make the command you have to type very simple.

mdi2tif.exe -source filename.mdi

The above command uses the source parameter and gives the name of the file. If you don’t add any more parameters, it will look for chúng tôi in the modiconv folder, convert it and output the file in the same directory. There are other parameters you can use, but the only ones that are of interest are dest and subfolders.

If you have a bunch of MDI file to convert, then you might want to use a slightly longer command like this:

mdi2tif.exe -source c:mdifiles -dest c:output -subfolders

If you don’t want to install any software on your computer at all, then you can use a free online service called Zamzar to convert MDI to PDF, TIFF and many other formats. Zamzar is a great online tool for converting between many different file formats.

How To Run .Reg Files As Administrator In Windows 11

In Windows 11, .reg files are used to store registry settings and can be employed to modify system configurations or to resolve specific issues. To ensure the proper execution of these files, it is often necessary to run them with administrator privileges. This article provides a comprehensive guide on running .reg files as administrators, along with additional insights and precautions.

Also see: How to Run Regedit as SYSTEM in Windows 11

When you are logged in to an administrator account, running a .reg file will typically be executed with administrator privileges by default. The User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear, requesting permission to make changes to your system. UAC is an essential security feature in Windows that helps prevent unauthorized changes to the system by asking for confirmation before allowing a program to run with elevated privileges.

However, if you encounter issues running a .reg file as an administrator, you can use one of the following methods to resolve the problem.

Useful tip: Create local admin account without password in Windows 11/10

Running the Registry Editor with administrator privileges allows you to import and apply the .reg file directly. Follow these steps:

Press Win + S to open the search box.

Choose Import from the drop-down menu.

Linked issue: Windows Registry Key “Access is Denied” Error

Third-party software like Advanced Run allows you to run any program such as the Registry Editor as an administrator or even as a user with higher authority, such as SYSTEM or TrustedInstaller. These higher authority accounts can access and modify system files and settings that are usually locked for even administrators. Here’s how to use Advanced Run:

Download and install Advanced Run from the developer’s website.

Extract and launch the software.

In the “Run As…” section, select the desired privilege level from the drop-down menu (e.g., Administrator, SYSTEM, or TrustedInstaller).

In the Command Line Arguments field, enter the path to your registry file: C:registryfile.reg (replace C:registryfile.reg with the actual path to your .reg file).

Another way to run .reg files as an administrator is by utilizing the Task Manager. This approach does not require any third-party software and can be done using the built-in tools available in Windows 11. Here’s how to use the Task Manager to run a .reg file as an administrator:

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.

Check the box next to Create this task with administrative privileges to ensure that the .reg file will be run as an administrator.

The Windows Registry is a vital component of the operating system that stores configuration settings and options for various applications and system components. Modifying the registry can have unintended consequences if not done correctly, potentially leading to system instability or rendering your computer unbootable.

To minimize the risk of causing system issues, take the following precautions:

Only apply .reg files from trusted sources. Downloading and running .reg files from unverified sources can introduce malware or unwanted changes to your system. Ensure that the .reg files you apply come from reputable sources, and if possible, inspect the contents of the file before applying it.

Familiarize yourself with the changes being made by the .reg file. If you are unsure of the effects of a particular .reg file, research the registry keys and values being modified before applying the file. This knowledge can help you understand the potential impact on your system and prevent unintended consequences.

If you are not comfortable working with the registry or are unsure of the changes being made, seek help from a knowledgeable friend or a professional technician. Making incorrect changes to the registry can cause serious system issues, and it is better to be safe than sorry.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that some .reg files might include settings that are specific to certain system configurations or software versions. Before applying a .reg file, ensure that it is compatible with your particular setup to prevent potential issues.

Musicbee Won’t Open In Windows 11/10

The problem we will tackle in this guide is where MusicBee refuses to open when you attempt to launch it. The most common cause of this challenge is that it gives your antivirus software false positives, and the antivirus blocks it in turn. MusicBee could also fail to run due to compatibility issues or software conflicts.

In this tutorial, I’ll explain the best solutions to fix your MusicBee and get it to run whenever you need it.

MusicBee won’t open in Windows 11/10

If your MusicBee player won’t open in Windows 10, there are a few solutions that have been confirmed to fix the issue. Try the methods in the list below:

Temporarily disable your antivirus software.

Turn on DEP for only essential programs and services only.

Use MusicBee in Windows compatibility mode.

Reinstall MusicBee

Use MusicBee Portable edition.

Troubleshoot in Clean Boot State.

Now, let’s go into more in-depth explanations for the above solutions.

1] Temporarily disable your antivirus software

If your MusicBee application doesn’t open, the first suspect is that your security software might’ve identified it as malicious and is blocking it from launching. We never recommend that you use your PC without antivirus protection.

However, to confirm that the antivirus isn’t blocking the program, you can disable it temporarily. With the antivirus disabled, attempt to run MusicBee again and see if it now opens. Most antivirus tools allow you to add specific programs to their whitelist, and this is a better option than disabling the tool entirely. So, if you have this choice, you can do whitelist MusicBee and try to open it again.

2] Turn on DEP for essential programs and services only

Go to Advanced system settings from the left-hand panel.

Select Settings from the Performance section.

3] Use MusicBee in Windows Compatibility mode

Alternatively, if MusicBee ran on an earlier edition of Windows, and you’re sure of this Windows version, you don’t have to run the compatibility troubleshooter.

Instead, check the Run this program in compatibility mode for: checkbox and select the Windows version from the dropdown menu there.

4] Reinstall MusicBee

Uninstall and then reinstall MisicBee software and see if it helps.

5] Use MusicBee Portable edition

If you try all the solutions on this page but haven’t had any luck fixing MusicBee, you may want to use the portable version of the player. Simply visit MusicBee’s download web page and get the setup for MusicBee Portable. Download MusicBee Portable on your PC and run it instead.

6] Troubleshoot in Clean Boot State

The final method we’ll explore is to eliminate software conflicts that might be preventing MusicBee from starting by performing a Clean Boot. Press the Windows key + R combination to invoke the Run dialog box.

In the Run dialog box, type MSConfig and hit ENTER.

Unmark the Load startup items checkbox and mark the Use original boot configuration and Load system services settings checkboxes.

Switch to the Services tab and unmark the checkbox beside Hide all Microsoft services.

Restart your computer now and try opening MusicBee after the machine comes back on.

If MusicBee works this time around, then a running process or application was the culprit. You need to identify it and remove it, if possible.

All the best.

How To Zip And Unzip Files On Android (Rar, Zip, 7Z)

If your job demands that you send many large files, or if you just want an easy way to send a large number of pictures to someone, zip files are a necessity – even on your phone! This article shows how to compress or decompress large files on your Android smartphone.

RAR is an unzipping tool developed by the people who created WinRAR, their Windows application for the same purpose. Using the mobile app you can unpack files from RAR, ZIP, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, 7z, ISO and ARJ formats. However, you can only archive, or zip files in RAR and ZIP formats. We’ll show you how to use RAR to compress files to the RAR and ZIP formats, then use ZArchiver to compress files to the excellent 7z format.

Using this app will allow you to handle these types of files easily. The following steps show what you need to do.

How to use RAR to unzip files in Android

Download and install RAR from Play Store.

Open the RAR app. It will take you directly to your files.

The program will then display the file(s) that were in the ZIP folder.

Create a ZIP or RAR file

Creating a zip file on your phone so it can easily transmit via email, or another method of your choice, is also simple to do.

Open the RAR app.

From the file manager select the files you want to send by checking the box next to them. Make sure the total size does not exceed 707 MB.

Hit the “Archive” button.

Create a 7Z File on Android

According to our own tests, 7Z (or 7zip) is the most effective compression format. While the RAR app above doesn’t let you archive files into the 7Z format, you can use another great app called ZArchiver to create 7Z files.

In ZArchiver, you can turn folders into 7Z (or ZIP) archives by simple long-tapping on the folder you want to compress, then tapping Compress.

On this screen, you can select the Archive format (choose 7z) and the compression level – the higher the compression level, the smaller the file will be but the longer it will take to compress.

When you’re done, tap OK and let the compression complete.

In the image below, you can see that the file was compressed by 37%, which is pretty good going!

You can now send these files with fewer worries about whether your recipient will not receive them due to their large size. Want to do more with Android? Here’s how to connect an Xbox One controller to your phone. We can also show you how to fine-tune your phone volume using these nifty apps.
