What Is Sideloading?

Sideloading is the process of transferring files between two devices (as opposed to downloading and uploading). What makes it different from regular file transfers, particularly in the case of Android devices, is that it lets you install apps and games from outside of the Play Store, Oculus Store, or whatever first-party source a given device uses.

Oculus and Google want you to get things from their stores on their devices, of course, but you’re not legally obliged to, and sideloading helps you work around the basic-level restrictions these companies put in place to keep you on their stores and keep you filling their pockets.

Sideloading is a great way to explore apps and games that you may not find on the default stores that devices foist on you.

How To Access The Metaverse On Oculus Quest 2?

Virtual Reality is quickly gaining momentum in 2023. Facebook changing its name to Meta is only one of the steps in that direction. The Metaverse is a concept that has amazed and confused users at the same time. Part of you who already have an Oculus Quest 2 must be thinking about how you can get access to the Metaverse. I’m here to tell you there are ways you can make that happen. So keep your Quest 2 by your side as I show you the ways you can get into the Metaverse with it.

How to Enter the Metaverse on Oculus Quest 2? (2024)

While this guide will discuss how to get into the Metaverse with the Oculus Quest 2, it will also discuss some other requirements. However, if you already know them then use the table below to skip to the process itself.

What Is the Metaverse?

Ways You Can Access the Metaverse

Strictly speaking, there is no one way to access the Metaverse. The concept doesn’t fully exist yet since it will require a single universal world that is interconnected like the Internet. So there is no single app named the Metaverse that can be opened. However, since the Metaverse is essentially a digital universe, bits and pieces of it exist on multiple platforms. These pieces are in the form of different apps and games that allow users to jump inside them and socialize and play while using avatars. So in order to get the Metaverse experience before it’s fully here with your Oculus Quest 2, you will need at least one of these apps installed on your Quest 2. I’ll be listing these apps down below so keep reading.

Things You Will Need to Access the Metaverse with Oculus Quest 2

Ready to jump into the Metaverse with your Oculus Quest 2? Hold your horses for just a bit more. There are a couple of things you will need before you can start experiencing it. Have a look at the list below and make sure to cross every item off your list.

1. An Oculus Quest 2

2. A Metaverse Application/Game

Metaverse Apps and Experiences You Can Get

Given below are some of the most popular apps you can use to get the Metaverse experience. However, do note that not all of them might be available depending on where you live. Go through the list below and choose the one that takes your fancy.

1. Horizon Worlds

2. Horizon Venues

Horizon Venues is a bit of a different take into the Metaverse. Designed to bring real-life events online, Venues lets Quest 2 users attend live events right from the comfort of their homes. Remember Fortnite’s Concert? Horizon Venues is an app dedicated just to events like that. However, instead of it being just a concert, Venues houses all kinds of events.

Source: Meta

From music events, recorded documentaries, to sports and live events, there’s a lot on offer. Horizon Venues also ties into the previous Worlds so your avatar will carry over to this app too creating the Metaverse experience. Those wanting to step into the Metaverse like this, should get Horizon Venues (Free) and get going right away. Like before, Venues might not be available depending on your region.

3. AltspaceVR 4. Rec Room

Rec Room is an experience that sits right in the middle of Altspace and Horizon Worlds. The game boasts beautiful graphics coupled with servers full of people. Like the apps above, you can don avatars and walk about having fun either alone or with other people. However, Rec Room brings something more to the table. Rec Room’s experience is a bit more game-oriented.

The experience houses a wide variety of games that Oculus Quest 2 users can play together. The games themselves are created by creators and are very interesting. So if you’re a Quest 2 user who wants to play in the Metaverse, Rec Room is one such experience you can get. Simply add Rec Room (Free) to your Oculus account and begin playing.

5. VRChat

Created long before the release of the Oculus Quest 2, VRChat is a game that has captured the digital hearts of thousands worldwide. VRChat allows users to create their own custom avatars and drop in and out of worlds. There are potentially hundreds of custom worlds available and range across various locations.

How to Dive into the Metaverse with the Oculus Quest 2?

2. With either controller, select the App Drawer from the Universal Menu. Your list of installed apps will open up.

3. Simply select the one you installed by pressing the trigger on either controller.

4. Wait for the app/game to launch and have fun.

Oculus Quest 2 Review: The One You’Ve Been Waiting For

As well as being more comfortable to wear, it makes the Quest 2 more portable than its predecessor, and replacing the original rubber strap for a fabric one makes it even more compact. However, a number of Quest 2 users experienced skin irritation with the foam system, so Oculus now bundles a silicone cover in the box that fits over the foam interface.

That new strap system is designed to be simpler and more comfortable, making it easier for first-time VR users to get the best fit possible.

Oculus also boasts that the new strap system is more flexible than the original, accommodating all kinds of hairstyles and head shapes, but with relatively short hair, that’s not really a problem I’ve ever had with the Quest.

Refined design aside, the biggest change to the Oculus Quest 2 is undoubtedly the display. It’s a fast-switch LCD display like its predecessor, but that’s where the similarities end; the Quest 2 has upped the resolution of the display, now equating to 1832 x 1920 per eye compared to 1440 x 1600 of the original Quest, and there’s also a 90Hz refresh rate on offer this time around too.

Controllers and hand-tracking

Oculus essentially removed the thumbrest from the controllers when updating them for the original Quest, and that was a big complaint from VR fans – especially those that had the original Rift and knew what they were missing out on. Oculus heard the complaints, this time offering a larger thumb rest area next to the analogue sticks, and the controllers are generally a little larger than the originals too.

Design aside, there are other benefits to the updated controller, arguably most important being a boost to battery life. The original Quest controllers died a little too quickly, and that quickly became inconvenient – especially if you used disposable AA batteries to power the controllers. Oculus has done a lot of work behind the scenes and implemented a number of changes, like reducing the number of infrared LEDs in the rings, to offer a claimed 4x improved battery life.

That’s hard to verify of course, but after using the Quest 2 for a few weeks, I’m yet to replace the AA batteries in the controllers, and I certainly couldn’t say that of the original controllers.

Though the layout of cameras hasn’t changed on the Quest 2, there does seem to be a noticeable improvement to hand-tracking – possibly due to the improved processing power available.

It’s much more stable this time around, and I don’t seem to have to be so obvious with my gestures when playing games like Waltz of the Wizard. It’s still best performed in well-lit environments, with performance quickly deteriorating with available light, but I’d certainly class it as a viable alternative if your controllers are dead and you want to watch a bit of Netflix in VR.

Alongside the Snapdragon XR2 you’ll find an increased 6GB of RAM and either 128- (replacing the 64GB model) or a whopping 256GB of internal memory, depending on the variant you go for. It’s worth noting that storage space is the only difference between the two versions of the Quest 2, with identical hardware in every other respect.

You’ll need to be in a well-lit environment for the four on-board cameras to correctly calculate its position, but more importantly than that, your hands won’t be tracked if they’re out of view of the cameras – behind your back, for example. That may seem niche, but there’s a swathe of VR titles on the Quest that require you to reach behind your shoulder to access weapons and other gadgets, so it’s something you’ll likely experience often.

It does use the built-in sensors to estimate its position in the physical space, but it takes a split second to regain full tracking upon redetecting the controllers, and that can make all the difference in a gritty competitive shooter like Onward.

It’s not a problem exclusive to the Quest – it’s also a problem with the Oculus Rift S and the HTC Vive Cosmos – but unless you want to set up a dedicated play space with trackers placed around the room to completely capture movement, à la the Vive Cosmos Elite, it’s a compromise you’ll have to put up with.

Don’t get me wrong, it offers impressive 1:1 tracking and works flawlessly most of the time, but there are occasions where it might get a little confused.

Content & Oculus Link

Oculus claims that developers have found the Quest platform to be more profitable than other VR platforms, suggesting that there could be a swathe of apps and games actively in development for the platform. Couple that with the improved performance on offer from the XR2 chipset and it’s likely that the content available on the Oculus Quest will continue to grow over the coming months and years.

Essentially, you’ll never run out of things to play and experience on the Oculus Quest 2.

The original Oculus Quest had an RRP of $399/£399 for the 64GB variant and $499/£499 for a model with a boosted 128GB of storage, coming in at the same price as the Oculus Rift S and undercutting rivals like the HTC Vive Cosmos while offering standalone functionality. That’s a competitive price for what’s on offer, which makes the price of the Oculus Quest 2 even more surprising.

Then, in 2023, Oculus decided to bump the base storage up to 128GB without increasing the $299/£299 price tag.

Though a price hike is never welcome, even at its new price, the Quest 2 still represents great value for money compared to the £699/$699 HTC Vive Cosmos and £919/$999 Valve Index. It’s a little more expensive than Sony’s PSVR admittedly, but it’s much more capable in pretty much every way.

The Oculus Quest 2 is available to buy right now from Oculus and key third-party retailers like Amazon, John Lewis and Currys in the UK and US.

How To Hide Games On Steam

Steam has a mind-boggling impressive catalog of 50,000+ video games encompassing every imaginable genre. But it also contains lots of titles with terrible gameplay or embarrassing content that you’d prefer not to have your friends or family see you play.

Luckily, Steam provides a handful of options and privacy controls that you can readily use to hide specific games on Steam or your gaming activity from others. They aren’t perfect, but you should find them adequate in most circumstances.

Table of Contents

Hide Games in Steam Library

If you want to keep a Steam purchase private from someone else with access to your PC or Mac, you can quickly choose to hide it from your library. However, that won’t uninstall the game, hinder your ability to play it, or hide it from players on your Steam friends list.

1. Open the Steam app and switch to the Library tab.

3. Point to Manage and select Hide this game.

Hide In-Game Steam Status

If you want to stop players within your Steam friends list from seeing you as “in-game” while playing a particular video game, the best way to do that is to set your profile status to “Invisible.” That will make you appear as “Offline” in Steam, but you can still chat.

However, players shall continue to see your achievements and playtime related to the game should they decide to visit your Steam profile. You can prevent that by tweaking your privacy settings (more on that further below).

1. Open the Friends & Chat pane from the lower-right corner of the Steam app.

2. Select the arrow-shaped icon next to your Steam avatar.

3. Select Invisible.

Note: Selecting Offline also hides your in-game status, but you won’t be able to chat with other players.

Once you’ve finished playing, feel free to change your Steam status to “Online.” Just make sure to exit the game fully before you do that.

Hide Status From Select Friends

Blocking all communication with a player in your friends’ list prevents Steam from relaying your gameplay activity to them in real-time. That’s ideal for instances where you want to hide a game from a few select friends only.

However, your in-game status will still show up within a blocked player’s Friends & Chat pane if they decide to quit and restart Steam.

1. Open the Friends & Chat pane.

2. Select the arrow-shaped icon next to the player’s profile name.

3. Point to Manage and select Block All Communication.

Set Steam Game Details to Private

Setting your profile status to “Invisible” does not block your games list, achievements, or playtime from players in your friends’ list. If you want absolute privacy, you can hide all game details on Steam by modifying the privacy settings in your Steam profile. That will also stop Steam from displaying you as “in-game” to other players while playing any video game in your library.

1. Select your Steam profile avatar from the top-right of the Steam app or website and pick the View my profile option.

2. Select Edit Profile and switch to the Privacy Settings side tab.

3. Under the My profile section, set Game details to Private.

Alternatively, you can keep the Game details setting at Friends Only (which is the default setting) and check the box next to Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details to block your total game playtime only.

Steam should save your changes automatically. Make any additional modifications to the privacy settings if you want and exit the Edit Profile screen.

Remove a Steam Game Permanently

Suppose you don’t want to make your Steam game details private. But if you still want to hide a game from your online Steam profile, you can take the drastic step of removing it from your account completely. However, the only way to play it again is by re-purchasing it.

Permanently removing a game won’t hide any achievements or playtime related to it on your Steam profile.

1. Open the Help menu and select Steam Support.

2. Select the video game from the Recently Played list. If you don’t see it, type its name into the search box at the bottom of the screen to bring it up.

3. Select I want to permanently remove this game from my account and follow all remaining instructions to remove it from your Steam account.

If you’ve only played the game for less than two hours and have yet to exceed two weeks since the date of purchase, try requesting a refund from Steam instead.

Privacy Conscious Gamer

Your privacy matters, and Steam could be much better with more granular options to determine what others can and cannot see. For example, being able to hide the achievements and playtime for individual games instead of everything would be nothing short of terrific. But until Valve decides to improve its platform, the methods above should help you out a lot.

How To Fix Outlast 2 Graphics Issues Quickly

How to fix Outlast 2 graphics issues quickly

Stunning graphics is a must for all horror games, so high-quality and detailed images create a realistic gaming experience and help send shivers down your spine. In order to enjoy perfect Outlast 2 graphics, follow the recommendations below. In this article, you’ll learn what graphics settings to use for optimal results and what workarounds you can use to fix various Outlast 2 graphics issues.

Outlast 2 graphics settings

Try not to use larger textures than your RAM/VRAM can handle in order to avoid poor graphics performance.

Systems running Direct3D 10 should be restricted to low or lower.

Systems having 1GB of VRAM or less should be restricted to medium or lower.

Anisotropic filtering is available from 1x to 16x. Your video card might limit filtering to a lower value if it is not supported.

Shadow Quality

Using high values for shadow quality will require your video card to do more work. Direct3D 10 hardware should use low settings, meaning that shadows will be half the resolution (512).

Medium: Shadow will use the default resolution (1024) while High: Shadows double the resolution (2048).

Geometry Quality

Systems with low/mid-range CPUs should restrain from using high settings to reduce CPU strain.

Here’s what each setting does:

Low: Objects will use low polygon version more often and decals will disappear quite close to the camera.

Medium: Balanced draw distance.

High: Draw distances and geometry detail is greatly increased.

Restrain from using high settings unless your computer is equipped with a hi-range graphics card. Direct3D 10.0 hardware should use a lower quality version of the fog. Using high settings will add a lot of pressure on your GPU and only make a subtle difference anyway.

Direct3D 10 hardware should use the low settings for effects.

The game devs recommend using Temporal Anti-aliasing on all computers.

Running Outlast 2 without vertical sync might create tearing, but will allow you to run at a frame rate independent of your monitor refresh rate.

Enable and then disable V-Sync for testing purposes and then choose the option that yields the best results.

It is worth mentioning that when playing in windowed or borderless full-screen mode, Windows may enforce V-Sync.

Triple Buffering

Triple buffering allows you to run Outlast 2 with V-Sync enabled and without tearing, at a frame-rate relatively independent of you monitor. However, keep in mind that this comes with high input latency.

Expert tip:

Now, if your PC meets all the system requirements, use the following graphics settings:

Resolution: 1920×1080 (or closest native or recommended resolution)

Texture Quality: Very High

Texture Filtering: 1x (or slightly higher)

Shadows: Medium

Geometry: Medium

Fog: Medium

Anti-Aliasing: Temporal

Effects: High

Direct3D 10 PCs graphics issues

Bear in mind that if your video card doesn’t support Direct3D 11 (Shader Model 5.0), some graphical options will be disabled and the game will run at an overall lower quality.

If your CPU supports Direct3D 11 and the game detects it as a Direct3D 10 adapter, update your graphics drivers.

Advanced INI File options

You can also edit the INI files for additional options. Don’t forget to save the original file before applying any changes. You should also be aware that some combinations of options may lead to graphical issues and crashes. The INI files are available at this location: %userprofile%DocumentsMy GamesOutlast2OLGameConfig

Here are the features that you can edit within the INI files:

Chromatic Aberration: Disable the chromatic aberration effect by setting AllowChromaticAberration in OLSystemSettings.ini to False.

Borderless Fullscreen: Set the UseBorderlessFullscreen option to True in chúng tôi in order to enable borderless fullscreen.

Unlocked Frame Rate: To enable this feature, open the OLEngine.ini file and modify the MaxSmoothedFrameRate. The game will analyze your setting and the monitor’s refresh rate and pick whichever is the highest.

Sync Interval: If Outlast 2 runs at a very irregular frame rates, you can lock it down to 30. Open the chúng tôi file and tweak the SyncInterval. The devs explain that a SyncInterval of 2 will V-Sync every 2 refreshes of your screen, making the game run at 30 FPS on a 60 Hz monitor.

Unsupported graphics features on Outlast 2

SLI and Crossfire are not supported. The game will run both but will show no gain in performance.

NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync are not supported.
