MacBook charge cycles and battery health explained
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
Very simply put, a healthy battery on a MacBook is anything which is 80% or over. When we say 80%, we mean the battery’s ability to hold that amount of charge at one time. This is called the Maximum Capacity, and we’ll look in the next section at how to find that on your machine.
As long as you have 80% or above, Apple considers the battery to be ‘optimal’ and won’t replace it. As soon as the battery dips to 79% and below, then that’s when the battery starts to head into sub-optimal territory, requiring possible replacement. The average MacBook battery lasts for an average of five years, or 1,000 charging cycles, although it will vary depending on your device usage.
The idea of a charge cycle is when your battery uses 100% of its charge. Anything with a rechargeable battery has charge cycles. For MacBooks, a full charge cycle happens when you use 100% worth of battery. You can do this over multiple charges. For example, if you use 50% of your battery one day and then 50% on the next day, you have used one 100% charge cycle. How to check your MacBook’s battery health

How to preserve battery health on a MacBook
Once a battery starts to physically deteriorate, there’s nothing you can do to stop its decline. Aging is irreversible, whether it’s a human or a laptop battery. So keeping the battery capacity permanently at 100% is just plain impossible. So you need to focus on how to keep the battery capacity at 80% or higher for as long as possible.
Here are 6 tips to keep your MacBook battery health optimized for as long as possible.Don’t charge the MacBook to 100%
It may make you feel better to have a full charge, but over the long term, a 100% charge is only going to degrade the battery faster. Try to keep to no more than 60%-70% at one time.Don’t let the MacBook charge drop to single digits
While a full charge is not a good idea for long battery life, neither is a low charge. If you allow your MacBook to constantly drop into the single digits, then you’re going to have issues later.
If the battery is fully discharged, and then you don’t use the machine for a while, it could go into what is called a “deep discharge” state. This means it won’t switch on again because it won’t be able to hold a charge anymore.Don’t leave the MacBook unused for long periods
Even if you stop using your MacBook for a long period, with a big charge, that charge will gradually start to go down. Once the battery is fully drained and you eventually try to switch it back on again, you’ll have the “deep discharge” problem that was just mentioned.
Apple recommends that you recharge the MacBook every six months to stop this from happening.Don’t leave the MacBook plugged in for very long periods
I made this blunder with my first MacBook way back in 2012. I was so used to desktop computers — and the fact they were plugged in 24/7 — that I subconsciously did the same with my first laptop. Needless to say, this didn’t do any long-term favors to the battery.
Laptops are not meant to be plugged into a charging cable for long uninterrupted periods. The extra heat from the charging cable will make the battery even hotter. That said, newer-model MacBooks do have the ability to manage charging and they can even halt charging if the laptop is left plugged in for an extended period of time. The battery management software that Apple employs on the M1 and M2 models can go a long way, and while leaving your laptop plugged in constantly still isn’t great, it’s not as bad as it used to be.Watch the surrounding temperatures
Try not to use your MacBook in extreme temperatures, whether that’s too hot or too cold. If you do, then the battery is going to suffer. If you live in an area with extreme temperatures, do your best to protect the laptop. If it’s too hot, try to keep the room as cool as possible. If it’s too cold, gently warm the room up a bit.
This also goes for moisture levels, so don’t take your laptop into the bathroom with you when having a nice hot steamy bath.Update the MacBook’s operating system software
Finally, the old standby to every problem — keep the MacBook’s operating system updated as new patches come out.

No. You can’t reverse battery degradation. You can only replace the battery.
When the battery goes below 80% capacity, you will receive a warning telling you that the battery is severely degraded, and Apple will replace it for you.
On average, five years, which is 1,000 charging cycles.
Not unless you have AppleCare+ and the battery is below 80%. Otherwise, they will charge a service fee.
A MacBook has a Lithium-ion battery. These batteries are typically not negatively affected by leaving the device plugged into a charging cable for short infrequent periods. Moreover, while this has been more true in the past, Apple’s battery management software protects your M1 or M2 MacBook’s battery, even when it’s left plugged in all the time. That said, it’s still better to unplug it.
No, it takes longer than that to complete the task. Your device will have to be sent off to be repaired.
When it comes to driving, there’s one thing you should never do: “check your phone,” and you should surely do is use Driving Focus on your iPhone.
Most people drive because they enjoy the freedom of cruising down the road while listening to music or talking on their cell phones. However, many forget that these activities can be quite risky. We’ve all experienced a time when the phone starts ringing while driving.
A simple solution to manage the situation is iPhone’s Driving Focus mode. But do you know how to use it? I’ll show you how to set it up and how exactly it works. What is Driving Focus mode on your iPhone?
Earlier dubbed as Do Not Disturb While Driving, it is now incorporated in Focus mode with iOS 15. It helps you to concentrate on the road and reduces clutter while driving. It temporarily limits calls, texts, and other notifications.
A “Motor Car” icon appears on your iPhone after you turn on the Driving Focus mode. The icon’s appearance indicates that your device will now support features such as auto-reply and read replies with Siri. How to set up Driving Focus mode
Setting up the Driving Focus was a bit complex on iOS 15. To fix it, Apple has smoothened it and made it fairly simple on iOS 16. We’ll see how to set up the Driving Focus mode in both versions. In iOS 16
Select who can or can’t call you: Tap the People tab; you’ll have two options to choose from:
Customize your Lock Screen: iOS 16 brings automation and customizations to the Lock Screen. Thanks to it, you can link your Focus mode profiles with a lockscreen to reduce driving distractions. In iOS 15
Note: If you’ve tried setting up Driving Focus before, simply go to Settings → Focus and select Driving to start customizing it.Turn on or off Driving Focus mode
To enable/disable the Driving Focus mode in iOS 16 or iOS 15.
Alternatively, you can also:
In iOS 16 – On the Lock Screen, long-press the screen → swipe left or right to choose the look screen for which you’ve linked the Focus status.
In iOS 15 – On the Lock Screen, long-press the Motor car icon (or Driving text) → tap Driving mode to turn it off.
Sometimes, you may get an alert when trying to unlock your screen. Choose, I’m not driving to disable Driving Focus.Automate replies while driving
You can even set a custom message to inform people that you’re driving or will call later, etc. Notably, you can select a certain person or group that this message goes to. To set an automated message:
Notably, the selected contacts can also notify you if there’s something essential that needs to be delivered by sending “Urgent” as a supplement message.Automate the Driving Focus mode
You can turn on Driving Focus mode on its own if the iPhone is connected to the car’s Bluetooth or CarPlay and the car is in motion (or you’re moving fast). To enable the automation:Share Focus Status
You can let others know you’re driving by sharing a Focus status. This will let others know that you have your notifications silenced. Apple has tweaked the setting with iOS 16 as the Focus status now gets a separate section.
In iOS 15: Go to Settings → Focus → Driving → Focus Status → Toggle on Share Focus Status.
And that’s how it’s done!
Tech Junkie and Computer Science Undergrad, who loves experimenting things and everything Apple.
Android users have been enjoying the swipe keyboard for years now. And it’s now time for iOS users to use it on their devices. Yes, you heard that right! The latest update of iOS 13 and iPadOS has now got swipe keyboard with a feature named as QuickPath. It works on gestures provided by you on the keyboard.
Of course, it was possible to use swipe keyboard feature on iOS devices but it was only possible with third-party keyboard apps. But now, the feature is built-in in the latest version of iOS 13 and iPadOS as well. In this post, I will guide you on how to enable and use QuickPath keyboard on your iPhone and iPad running on iOS 13 and iPadOS respectively. How to Use QuickPath Keyboard on iPhone and iPad
Let me breakdown this guide into two parts. One for those who are using the iPhone and the other one who is using an iPad. But before if you aren’t aware how this swipe keyboard works, you’re missing out something important. Here’s how it works. How Does QuickPath Swipe Keyboard Work
Usually, you type by placing your finger on each letter on the keyboard to complete a work or a text. But when swipe keyboard is enabled and if you want to type a word, say igeeksblog, you must start from ‘i’ and then swipe towards g,e,e and so on to complete the word.
Once you complete typing a word, lift your finger, it will give a space automatically and then you can start typing the next word and so on to continue. This will surely improve your typing speed, in fact, it’s swiping speed now after the addition of QuickPath.
This is how simple it is to use the swipe keyboard on your devices. Now let’s see how you can set up and use it on your iPhone and iPad both.
How to Enable and Use iPhone Swipe Keyboard in iOS 13
With the release of iOS 13, there are a plethora of features that makes me impressed and one of them is QuickPath swipe keyboard. Here’s how to use it on your iPhone.
Step #1. Launch Settings app and head over to General from the list.
Step #2. Now tap on Keyboard and look for Slide to Type option from the list. Toggle Slide to Type to ON.
Step #3. Now open any app that pops up the keyboard and type by swiping on the keyboard at a glance.
That’s how simple it is to set up the swipe keyboard function on your iPhone running on iOS 13. Let’s now see how to enable QuickPath in iPadOS.
How to Enable and Use iPad Swipe Keyboard in iPadOS
Step #1. Open Settings app on your iPad.
Step #2. Next, tap on General → tap on Keyboard and toggle Slide on Floating Keyboard to Type to ON.
Step #3. The swipe keyboard is ready to use but the laptop-sized keyboard isn’t comfortable for swiping. In order to solve this issue, simply pinch the iPad keyboard to make it as small as possible.
Step #4. You can now start swiping once the keyboard is small just like your iPhone. The best thing is, you can float the minimized keyboard to any corner of iPad’s screen so that you can choose a comfortable part to start swiping on the keyboard.
Step #5. Once you’ve used the keyboard, pinch out the mini keyboard to make things normal on your iPad.
