Apple Downtown Nashville anchors Fifth + Broadway, Nashville’s new shopping, dining, office, and living destination. Apple’s neighbor at Fifth + Broadway is The National Museum of African American Music, a space that celebrates the role African Americans play in creating the American soundtrack.

Starting in June, Apple and The National Museum of African American Music will collaborate on Today at Apple creative sessions celebrating Black Music Month. Nashville is also home to the studios of Apple Music Country, opening a door to unique performances by guest artists when in-store events return.

Apple Music To Gain More Livestreams, Pre

In a new interview with Wired, Apple Music’s Zane Lowe and Oliver Schusser dive into how the service will evolve and where it’s headed over the next year with more livestreams, behind the scenes content, and radio, but not as we currently know it.

The last official report from Apple put paying Apple Music subscribers at 60 million. While Beats 1 radio has grown in many ways in the four years since it started back in 2023, Zane Lowe’s goal its to raise awareness and discovery.

“I want more people to listen and discover this stuff,” says Lowe. “And I want to integrate what we do at Beats 1 into Apple Music more thoroughly. I would guess there are still subscribers who don’t realise Elton John has done over 200 shows. Those shows are works of art in their own right.”

Part of that work has been underway over the last few months with new branding for Apple Music playlists like the new ‘Rap Life‘ and ‘ALT CTRL.’

Further evolution of Apple Music and Beats 1 will include new radio hosts, in-depth pre- and post-album documentary coverage, and more.

The idea is also to amplify what Apple thinks no-one is doing with Lowe promising “some big new names” for Beats 1 hosts, alongside lead DJs Julie Adenuga and Ebro Darden, in the next few months. What’s interesting is that Beats 1 is now documenting the creative process in real time, with Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig discussing the album Father of the Bride pre- and post-launch on his twice monthly Time Crisis show.

Another interesting tidbit from the interview, Apple Music head Oliver Schusser said that the iTunes Music Festival wasn’t retired, but rather “paused.”

Meanwhile, Apple has put on gigs for emerging musicians in stores throughout 2023, and Schusser says the company wants to do more live events in the next 12 months. While there are no official plans for a relaunch, he says, “We never retired the iTunes Festival. We paused it.”

Another part of the future of Apple Music will be more livestreams.

There’s also the matter of how livestreams fit into the picture. After events with Shawn Mendes, French rap group PNL and Tyler the Creator, who did a live performance of his album IGOR, streamed on Apple Music the night before it came out, Lowe says “live music is definitely on the horizon” for the service. It’s all part of the team’s bid to “eventise” – his word – album launches. In the case of Tyler the Creator, “fans can tune in, then after watching it maybe you go to the album.”

And Apple has been able to pull some helpful data from users who “pre-add” albums to their accounts before they’re released.

It turns out users are four times more likely to complete an album if they’d pre-added it to their collection, 1.5 times more likely to listen to it again and they listen to music four times longer than other Apple Music subscribers.

How To Enjoy Apple Music Spatial Audio On Third

Spatial Audio is Apple’s branding around a rising standard in music, with songs authored as Dolby Atmos soundtracks. Dolby Atmos has become popular for home video for movies and TV shows (such as all the content in Apple TV+ is available in 4K HDR with Atmos sound) and is now starting to enter the world of music.

Dolby Atmos music is available in the Apple Music streaming library, but it’s also offered by other services like Amazon Music HD. The point is, it’s not an Apple-exclusive thing.

Dolby Atmos songs can theoretically be played on any headphones or earbuds because it doesn’t rely on special hardware. Instead, the iPhone plays tricks on your brain by sending audio to the left and right speakers/headphones with slight phase delays. It is these phase delays that simulate the wider soundstage and make it feel like audio is coming from above or behind you. (If you use Apple Music on Apple TV 4K with a surround sound home theater system, the extra speakers will transmit separate audio channels though for the best experience.)

Out of the box, any iPhone with iOS 14.6 will transmit music using the Dolby Atmos mode to all AirPods, AirPods Max and Beats headphones with the H1 or W1 chips inside. In my experience, the effect on the small AirPods earbuds is pretty minimal to non-existent. You really need proper headphones which are simply big enough to provide an engrossing audio experience. That doesn’t mean you need to shell out the $500+ on AirPods Max.

For instance, I have heard some great Dolby Atmos mixes through the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones. These offer decent sound reproduction and impressive noise cancellation for under $300 all-in. There is one trick you need to be aware of though to use the Sony’s — or any third-party headphones — with Spatial Audio for Apple Music.

By default, your iPhone or iPad will not recognize these headphones as Atmos-compatible. As not every audio accessory in the world can understand Atmos properly, Apple only sends Atmos sound to its Bluetooth devices automatically. With default settings, all other connected headphones will only receive a stereo mix.

You have to change your audio settings manually to fix this.

How to listen to Apple Music Spatial Audio on any headphones

Open the Settings app, on an iOS device running iOS 14.6 or later.

Go to Music settings.

Select ‘Dolby Atmos’.

Change the preference from ‘Automatic’ to ‘Always On’.

As the name suggests, the Always On setting will send the encoded Atmos stream to any connected headphones or speakers. This now means you can use your own headphones like the Sony XM4’s and experience the spatial soundstage. The reason why this setting is not enabled by default is because some equipment can actually sound worse interpreting Atmos than a standard stereo mix.

One final thing to be aware of: with iOS 15, Apple is enabling head-tracking for Apple Music Spatial Audio. This means that the direction of sound when listening through AirPods Pro or AirPods Max will change depending on your own head movements. This feature of Spatial Audio will not be available on third-party headphones as it uses the gyroscope sensors inside the AirPods. However, whilst head-tracking for watching movies is natural, it is less clear what the benefits are when listening to music.

Whereas when watching movies you are stationary and focused on the screen, you are often listening to music when walking around or doing other tasks. In those cases, the head tracking spatial effect can be annoying. In fact, many people currently the iOS 15 beta are hoping Apple adds a toggle to disable the head-tracking feature inside of Apple Music as they found the effect too distracting.

How To Set A Sleep Timer In Apple Music On Iphone, Mac, And Homepod

Do you like falling asleep listening to your favorite songs? Sadly, the official iOS or macOS Music app has no sleep timer functionality! Don’t worry. Let me show you straightforward ways to automatically stop Apple Music at the chosen time on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices.

Note: The steps below work for almost all music apps, including Spotify, Amazon Music, etc. However, most Apple Music alternatives already have inbuilt sleep timers!

2 Methods to set iPhone sleep timer using Apple Music

Method 1: Using the Clock app

Launch the inbuilt Clock app on your iPhone or iPad.

Tap Timer from the bottom right.

Chose the duration. I spend plenty of time thinking late in the night and set 45 minutes, which is around 10 to 12 songs.

Tap When Timer Ends. Scroll down and tap Stop Playing → Set.

Tap the green-colored Start.

Now, open the Music app and play your songs. The music will automatically stop after the set timer.

To cancel the Apple Music sleep timer: Open the Clock app and tap Timer. Finally, tap Cancel or Pause.

Method 2: Using the Shortcuts app

If you have a consistent routine, you can create an automation that automatically stops the music at the set time. Here’s how. It may appear long, but in practice, it is effortless. Try it once.

Open the Shortcuts app on iPhone or iPad.

Tap Automation.

Tap Time of Day. Set the time when you would like the music to stop.

Tap Weekly to select days. Once done, tap Next.

Tap Add Action.

Type Pause in the search box and tap Play/Pause from the search results.

Tap Play/Pause again and choose Pause. After that, tap Next.

Toggle off Ask Before Running. Finally, tap Done. You have successfully set the automation.

The music will automatically stop at the set time (see the image below).

If you no longer need this, open the Shortcuts app and tap Automation. Swipe right to left on the Play/Pause automation and tap Delete.

Though impossible to get rid of it completely, you can temporarily hide most of Apple Music’s aspects.

How to hide Apple Music on your iOS device
