‘Torchnc’ And ‘Instasnap’ Spice Up Notification Center On Jailbroken Iphones

Two new jailbreak tweaks have recently appeared in Cydia by the same developer, and they both happen to focus on Notification Center. Specifically, these tweaks aim to add handy shortcuts to the Notification Center pull-down pane.

The first tweak on the docket, TorchNC, adds a shortcut to activate the iPhone’s LED flash. There are other tweaks and apps that perform flashlight functions, but I always find it useful to have it within Notification Center, or directly on the Lock screen.

The second tweak, like the first, is a shortcut for Notification Center. Instead of interacting with the iPhone’s LED flash, InstaSnap is a tweak that allows you to quickly access the camera from within Instagram. Seeing as though this tweak doesn’t require the iPhone only LED flash, it works with both the iPhone and iPod touch perfectly fine.

Take a look as we profile both InstaSnap and TorchNC in our walkthrough videos inside…

TorchNC is a free jailbreak tweak that can be downloaded from Cydia’s ModMyi repo. It’s actually a sequel of sorts to another tweak simply entitled Torch. That tweak, too, allowed you to easily interface with the LED Flash, but it didn’t have the convenience of Notification Center involved.

Once installed, enabling TorchNC is as simple as venturing to the Settings app, selecting Notifications, and adding TorchNC to Notification Center. Once added, simply swipe down on the status bar to reveal Notification Center, and use the “Tap to torch” button to enable and disable the LED flashlight.

It’s a very simple tweak, but it’s great when you need quick access to a Torch, as they call a flashlight outside of the States. Correct me if I’m wrong with that assumption.

Now that we’ve covered TorchNC, lets talk about its cousin, a tweak called InstaSnap.

While both tweaks may look the same in Notification Center, their functions are radically different. As mentioned above, InstaSnap is a simple shortcut to the Instagram camera. I don’t know if you’re anything like me and have tons of apps installed and placed within various folders, but at times I have a hard time quickly locating the specific app that I need to use.

Needless to say, many wonderful snapshot opportunities have passed me by, because I wasn’t quick enough on the draw when opening the Camera app. InstaSnap solves this issue by placing a shortcut directly within Notification Center that will load up the camera section within Instagram. Once you press the shortcut button, the Instagram camera is ready to fire within a few seconds. Obviously you will need Instagram installed and be logged into your Instagram account before using InstaSnap, but I’m sure you knew that already.

Final thoughts

Neither of these tweaks are anything groundbreaking, and in fact, at least in the case of TorchNC, functionality of other jailbreak tweaks has been duplicated. That being said, both tweaks have low overhead, and can serve as a reminder as to the usefulness of the Notification Center shortcut. When iOS 5 was first jailbroken, these Notification Center shortcuts were all the rage, but now I feel as if we kind of take them for granted.

Considering that both apps are free, they both have my recommendation if you happen to have a jailbroken iPhone. What do you think? Would you recommend using either?

Install Android 4.2 On Samsung Captivate

We reported on an Android 4.2 ROM for the Samsung Captivate a week ago, but unfortunately that particular ROM had quite a few issues to be used as a daily driver and was more of a test build. But fret not, as an almost fully working version of Android 4.2 has now been released for the Captivate, by XDA Recognized Developer pawitp, who also brought Android 4.2 to the Galaxy S in a very stable form.

In case you were wondering, Android 4.2 is still called Jelly Bean but brings quite a few new features, such as a new keyboard with inbuilt Swype-like typing mode, Photo Sphere mode in the camera for 360 degrees panorama photos, Daydreams screensaver mode for displaying pictures and other info when the device is charging, lockscreen widgets, Quick Settings toggles in the status bar, and general performance and stability improvements. If you thought Android 4.1 was great, just wait till you try out 4.2.

However, there are a couple of issues in the ROM at this point, quoted from the source page, where you can always find the most updated list of known issues. Here’s the list of known issues in the ROM currently:

Wifi not working for some users (I’ve already included a fix which worked for some users (on I9000), but still doesn’t work for some users apparently.)

Sim Toolkit (STK) does not work

Bluetooth not working (Fix included in guide)

Follow the guide below to know how the Android 4.2 ROM can be installed on the Samsung Captivate. Keep in mind that this is an unofficial ROM that may have some issues, and no Samsung-specific features will be available as it is a ROM built from stock Android sources.

The procedure described below is only for the Samsung Captivate. Do not try it on any other device.

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky, so try them out at your own risk, and make sure to read each step carefully before attempting anything. We will not be held responsible if anything goes wrong.

How to Install Android 4.2 on Samsung Captivate

Make sure you have ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery installed on the phone.

Download the latest build of the ROM from the source page.

Also download the “Google Apps” file from the source page. AOSP ROMs like CM do not contain Google apps like Gmail, Talk, YouTube, Search, etc by default, so you will need to install the Google apps package as well to be able to use all the Google services.

Copy both the ROM and Google apps files (copy the files, don’t extract them) to the internal storage on the phone.

In recovery, use Volume keys to scroll up and down and power key to select an option.

Select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm. Wait a while till the data wipe is complete (this will only wipe installed apps and settings, but will not wipe personal files on the SD card).

Select install zip from sdcard, then select choose zip from sdcard. Scroll to the ROM file and select it. Confirm installation on the next screen.

The phone may reboot once during installation, then continue installing the ROM automatically. If it doesn’t resume and just boots into ClockworkMod recovery, repeat step 8 to install the ROM again.

After ROM installation completes, select choose zip from sdcard again, then select the Gapps file to install the Google apps package.

Once the installation of the Google apps package is complete, go back to the main recovery menu and select reboot system now to reboot the phone and boot up into Android 4.2. The first boot can take a few minutes, so don’t panic if it takes 5-7 minutes to do so.

[Bluetooth Fix] If you find that Bluetooth isn’t working for you, download the patch to fix it from this link. Then, copy the downloaded file to the internal storage, boot to recovery, repeat step 8 to install it, then reboot the phone. Bluetooth should then work.

NOTE: The ROM will get regular updates as development goes on, so be sure to check back on the source page for updated versions. To update to a newer version of the ROM, just download it, put it on the phone, and flash it from recovery, without wiping data. Be sure to flash the Google apps package as well.

Android 4.2 is now installed and up and running on your Samsung Captivate. Don’t forget to visit the source page for further details and updates on the ROM. Do let us know how it works!

In Pursuit Of A Dream

As I’ve grown, my values have changed and evolved.

Things that mattered to me in my twenties and early thirties don’t matter so much now.

As each year passes, what matters to me becomes clearer. A simple life, with a focus around family, regular outdoor exercise, and a good work routine is what I’m looking for.

(Honestly, I think this guy had it figured out 😉 )

Away from the bright city lights and hustle and bustle that defined our previous decade.

Near the trails and woods so we can spend time hiking, running, biking and camping with our kids.

My wife and I are incredibly fortunate to both work for ourselves, which means we can work anywhere we want.

So, over the course of the past 12 months, we spent time browsing Google Maps, looking for small towns that matched our criteria.

We read endless “20 best towns for hiking” and “Best mountain towns in the US” list articles from publications like National Geographic and Outside magazine.

We asked our friends — who last year upped and moved to Asheville, NC, following their dream — for their list and criteria for inspiration.

Finally, we found somewhere.

We kicked the tires on the idea, but couldn’t find a compelling reason why it wouldn’t work.

It was time to roll the dice.

Time to stop dreaming and turn it into reality. The only way to know whether we’d like it was to try it.

So we packed up and moved.

In May 2023, we left St. Petersburg, Florida and drove north to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. And we love it here!

It’s a beautiful, historic town tucked into the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, with mountains on both sides. The town is enchanting and the Appalachian Trail runs about 300ft from our front door.

It’s early days, but I think it’s perfect for us.

Coworking spaces are few and far between of course (although there are several good coffee shops in town), which means I’m primarily working from home now…

…but I love working from home now!

Welcome to My New Office

There were three big challenges to overcome working from home.

Firstly, I missed chatting with colleagues but I rarely feel like that now, largely because my online network has grown. I make a point of jumping on video calls with friends, fellow online creators and customers a few times a month.

Secondly, and one of the biggest challenges working from home, it’s important to be able to focus on work and not be distracted with home stuff.

Thirdly, it also took me a long time to appreciate the value of a good routine for getting work done.

Setting up a proper work space can help on all these fronts.

You want to be inspired by your surroundings and be able to focus entirely on work.

So it’s a hugely worthwhile investment to set things up the way you want.

I mentioned my previous, St Petersburg office setup briefly in 2023’s end of year summary.

The Stuff

In 2023, I shelled out what seemed at the time like an enormous sum on a lovely Jarvis standing desk. It’s been worth every penny.

I break my day into blocks of sitting and blocks of standing (no particular schedule).

On the left of this picture is the Chart of Cosmic Exploration by Pop Chart, which is a super cool visual history of spaceflight. I learn something new every time I look at it.

The picture on the right is the Success Canvas Art by Ikonick. It reminds me to work hard to achieve my goals.

Closing Thoughts

Whilst the past few weeks have been frustrating, chaotic and above all tiring — that’s moving with a 1 yr old and a 3 yr old for you — deep down I feel more content and at peace than I have in a long time.

Right now, I have to pinch myself to check it’s real and I’m not just on vacation. I can’t escape the feeling that someone is going to come along and say “Alright then, time to go back to reality…”.

I realize how incredibly fortunate I am to live and work here.

I’ve worked hard chasing this dream, or some variation of it, most of my adult life. Now I intend to make the most of it.

See you on the trails!

How To Install Matlab On A Chromebook

Install MATLAB on a Chromebook (2024)

Here, we have discussed three ways to run MATLAB on a Chromebook – the Web, the Play Store, and the Linux container. Based on your expertise level, you can choose the method from the table below.

Method 1: Run MATLAB in Chrome Browser

1. First, head over to this webpage and create a free account. You will have to verify your email ID.

3. Now, you need to fill a small form, where you have to mention all the details. Don’t worry, you don’t need to pay anything.

5. And that’s it. You can now use the web version of MATLAB on your Chromebook. And the best part is that this version will work on all Chromebooks, be it a school-issued Chrome OS device or otherwise. Moreover, you get 5GB of cloud storage for storing your codes and designs under the 30-day free trial. Post that, you will have to buy a license which starts at $21 for students.

Method 2: Install MATLAB on Chromebook Using Play Store

There is an Android version of MATLAB too, but it’s pretty barebones, and you can only perform a few algebraic functions. Also, this method will not work on school-issued Chromebooks since Play Store access is locked for students. Nevertheless, if you want to get started with MATLAB, you can try the MATLAB Android app on your Chromebook.

2. Next, open the Google Play Store and search for MATLAB (Free). Install the app.

3. Once installed, open this page on your browser and create a free MATLAB account.

4. Now, come back to the MATLAB Android app and sign in.

5. Voila! You can now use the MATLAB Android app on your Chromebook.

Method 3: Install MATLAB on Chromebook Using Linux

1. First and foremost, go ahead and set up Linux on your Chromebook. During the process, make sure to assign more than 20GB of space to Linux. If, for some reason, Linux is not installing on your Chromebook, follow our linked guide to fix the issue.

2. Next, I suggest you follow the first method of this article on how to run MATLAB on a web browser. Just sign up for a free account and enroll in the free trial.

4. The webpage will automatically select the latest version of MATLAB (R2024a) as the default download. Free users can’t choose an older release. If you have paid for a license, I recommend downloading MATLAB R2024b for better performance on your Chrome OS device. Next, from the drop-down menu, choose “Linux” and download the ZIP file.

5. Once downloaded, move the ZIP file to the Linux section in the Files app. After that, copy the name of the ZIP file. You can press the Chromebook keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + Enter” to copy the name of the ZIP file.

6. Now, open the Linux Terminal, enter the below command, and hit enter. Make sure to replace the filename with the actual file name that you copied above.

7. After the Terminal is done extracting the content, run the commands listed below one by one.

xhost + sudo ./install

9. The installer will connect to the internet and install the desktop version of MATLAB on your Chromebook. Once the installation is complete, close the window.

10. Now, to open MATLAB, you need to run these commands one by one.

cd /usr/local/MATLAB/R2024a/bin ./matlab

11. And that’s it. Here is the full-fledged desktop version of MATLAB running on my Chromebook without any issues.
