Apple first introduced the notch design back in 2023, with the launch of the iPhone X.
There was a lot of tech inside the notch:
Ambient light sensor
Apple managed to shrink the notch in the iPhone 13, thanks to two changes. First, the speaker and microphone were moved from the notch to the bezel. Second, the separate Face ID components were combined.
For the iPhone 14, Apple is expected to be taking a different approach to the Pro and non-Pro models. The former will get two separate cutouts in the screen: a round hole for the front-facing camera, and a pill-shaped extended oval for everything else. Apple notes in their patent application that the use of the light-folded projector can reduce footprint of the imaging and sensing components of a device to increase the display area for the device such as a device with bezels.
In particular, the use of the light folding element can provide more flexibility for positioning the IR light emitter with respect to the other components such as the IR detector and front-facing camera.
Translated from patent-speak, what Apple is describing is using a prism. Instead of the infrared emitter being within the notch/pill area, it can be off to the side, beneath the display, with a prism used to turn the beam 90 degrees. The prism would take up less space than the emitter, enabling a smaller notch or cutout for the rest of the components.
The same result could be achieved by a mirror positioned at 45 degrees, but one of the illustrations in the patent application does specifically reference a prism. For infrared light, quartz glass is used.
If Apple wanted to use a mirror instead, it would use a polished metal mirror, rather than a glass one. Aluminum, copper, silver, and gold are all used for IR mirrors. It’s also possible to use dialectric-coated mirrors tuned to a specific wavelength, but that introduces complexity and cost.
We don’t have long to wait until we see the iPhone 14 lineup, with the launch event now confirmed to take place on September 7.

On Wednesday, Apple launched the iPhone 14 series. As with the past three years, the lineup is split, with two semi-affordable entries and two more expensive flagships. In this case, we have the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus on one end and the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max on the other.
What’s different this time, though, is the disparity between these two sets. This year, more than any other, Apple is working to appeal to two distinct types of iPhone buyers: the experts and the normies.
For the iPhone 11, 12, and 13 series, there was a lot of overlap between the regular phones and the Pro ones. For example, a person who uses their iPhone for CPU-intensive tasks would prize processing power, but they might not care about cameras. This hypothetical buyer could happily grab the iPhone 13 for just $799. They’d get the same CPU and general features as the iPhone 13 Pro but for $200 less.

Samsung has multiple smartphone lines, each with its own identity. The Galaxy S line is the best of the best for the general consumer, while the Galaxy A line appeals to multiple levels of budget shoppers. This creates multiple categories of phones, each with its own strict appeal to a certain demographic.
Apple only sort of does this. It has the iPhone SE, which strictly goes after a budget consumer. Other than that, though, every other consumer needs to get lumped into the main iPhone line. That sounds more simple than Samsung’s strategy, but it also is more limiting. With so much historical overlap between the four iPhones in the main series, Apple could only do so much to cater each phone to the many different types of buyers.
iPhone buyers must now put themselves into one of two distinct camps: ambivalent normies or passionate experts.
With the iPhone 14 series, Apple is dismantling those limitations. Now, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus can exist as phones for the average consumer who upgrades every few years. The Pro models, meanwhile, can specifically appeal to the power user who upgrades more frequently — even yearly. Apple can curate and market these devices for these two distinct sets of buyers.
This creates a very interesting situation. If you hold an iPhone 14 in one hand and an iPhone 14 Pro in the other, you’ll be looking at completely different devices for wildly different people. The Pro model will have a better screen by leaps and bounds, a cutout instead of a notch, a better camera system with an additional lens, and far more premium build materials. Inside, it will have a more powerful chip and better memory management that allow for much-desired usability improvements, including an always-on display.
The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro are completely different phones.
Meanwhile, in your other hand, you’ll have a phone that offers none of those things. You’ll be holding, in a sense, two completely different phones — and each one will land at very different price points.
Power users had better be ready to spend
Let’s go back to the hypothetical buyer who wants all the processing power but doesn’t care about cameras. Previously, they would have been able to buy an iPhone for under $800 and get what they wanted. Now, however, they will need to spend at least $1,000 to get the A16 Bionic, since the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus come with last year’s A15 Bionic.

The Pro has a slightly larger, slightly faster display and an extra camera lens on the back. That’s…pretty much it.
What we could see in the future is a larger separation between pro and non-pro models. This, of course, will mean fewer new features for the non-pro sector. Hypothetically, one could imagine a Pixel 8 that doesn’t offer too many upgrades over the Pixel 7, while the Pixel 8 Pro could offer a ton of terrific new features for much more money.
The iPhone 14 series will act as a litmus test for the rest of the industry.

Hold down the sleep/power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the power button

Even though the screen is black, that doesn’t mean the device can’t be interfaced with either iTunes or a custom firmware client (for jailbreaking, etc).
Remember that if you see the restore logo, iTunes logo, or any message on the iPhone screen, you are not in DFU mode but standard Recovery Mode. Again, DFU mode is signified by having a completely black screen on the device. If anything else is the case, repeat the steps above until you enter into DFU mode successfully.Restoring a Device from DFU Mode
Once you are in DFU mode you can restore the iPhone with firmware by selecting the appropriate iOS IPSW files, or set it up as new, restore from a backup, update with iTunes itself to the latest version of iOS, or whatever else you need to do. We cover using IPSW files in detail here.
Do note that you can usually perform a simple iOS update or restore with Recovery Mode, DFU is not always required, particularly for some more basic troubleshooting situations.How to Exit DFU Mode on iPhone
The simplest way to exit out of DFU mode is to hold down the Home and sleep/power buttons on the iPhone while connected to iTunes. Then just hit the power button as and this should reboot the device as usual.
And if you’re curious, yes this works all the same on an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, it’s all the same.
The most common use for DFU mode is to repair and restore a bricked iphone, sometimes to attempt an iOS downgrade to an earlier version, or for reasons pertaining to a jailbreak. In the latter situation, it’s not unusual for people to buy an existing iPhone and jailbreak and unlock the device to use the phone on another network or overseas.
