Suggested March 2024 Iphone 6 And 6 Plus: Six Months On, Choice Is King

We all knew it was coming following months of uncharacteristic leaks, but the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus double announcement of September 9th 2014 saw the biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since the handset was first brought to market. Apple launched two handsets, both with differing screen sizes but more importantly, both of those screen sizes were bigger than the iPhone 5s they were replacing.

After years of mocking users of Android phones that seemed to know no limits when it came to packing ever larger, ever more pocket-busting screens into smartphones it was time for Apple fans to embrace the idea of a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch device in their midst.

Whether people liked it or not, the 4-inch iPhone was gone. At least, beyond the lower-end iPhone 5c that was almost apologetically left in the iOS lineup.

We recently saw the six-month anniversary of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus‘s release – they went on sale on September 19th – and as the time has passed it is clear that many opinions have changed. Before the two new iPhones were announced everyone thought they were too big. Then, once they saw them, the iPhone 6 was the Goldilocks phone – just right – but that iPhone 6 Plus? Way too big.

Fast forward to today. As we stand right now, in late-March and six months after the two newest iPhones on the block were released to an eager public, it’s that iPhone 6 Plus which is getting attention. Having listened to podcasts and read written pieces over the last few weeks I’ve come across more than a few people who bought the smaller iPhone 6 at launch but are now seriously considering going bigger come upgrade time. It’s easy to see why, too.

If you’ve never had any time with an iPhone 6 Plus then it’s difficult to understand quite how lovely it is to look at. With a 5.5-inch screen and plenty of pixels to go around, the phone certainly looks the part. It’s just big enough to be on the cusp of replacing the iPad mini for some too, which is a positive if you’d rather save the cash or even better, use it to buy a larger iPad Air 2 instead. Whatever you do, I’d wager that anyone with an iPhone 6 Plus would find their usage of any small-screened iPad very limited indeed.

And then there’s the battery life. It lasts forever, or close to it. Going a couple of days without a charge is the kind of thing we haven’t been able to do since, well, ever. At least, not with an iPhone. The larger screen of the iPhone 6 Plus means Apple can pack more battery behind it which in turn means more time between charges. If you spend a lot of time away from a Lightning cable then that’s a big, big thing.

None of this is to say that the iPhone 6 is a bad bet though, because it’s not. I have the hands of a four year-old, and even though I’d love the screen estate offered by a 5.5-inch smartphone it’s barely practical for me. The iPhone 6 isn’t small by any stretch of the imagination, but I can just about hold it without having a heart attack every time its weight shifts.

And there, in a nutshell, is why the two-pronged approach of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus works for both Apple and its customers. Choice works for everyone, and it means nobody needs to shoehorn either of the two phones into a use case that it doesn’t quite fit. Six months on from when Tim Cook and his team announced the latest iPhones to hit the market both are still hugely popular. The mix between the two may be shifting slightly, but both very much have a place in the marketplace. There are rumors circulating that Apple is going to launch a new 4-inch iPhone alongside two updated models this year too, further cementing the notion that choice is now part of Apple’s make up.

Who could imagine Apple having three differently sized iPhones on sale a few years ago?

Not me.

Nokia 3.1 Plus Vs Redmi 6 Pro: New Kid Meets The Budget King

With the new Nokia 3.1 Plus, HMD Global is looking to make a splash in the budget market with the phone’s massive screen and the stock Android experience. In fact, if you read my first impressions of the phone, then you’ll know how much I like it. But I decided to do a customary comparison to find out if it holds its head against the competition.

Yes, looking at the specs alone, it may seem that they both would attract different customers. However, Nokia decided to attach an odd-ball price tag to the Nokia 3.1 Plus, making it difficult for me to compare it against the devices in its “league”. It seems like a bold move, but hey, the performance of a phone is not always defined by its price tag, right? Cue the comparisons.

Design And Build Quality

The Redmi 6 Pro, despite its notched display, doesn’t get rid of too much of the bezels, but the Nokia 3.1 Plus keeps it classic. I also love the silver accents on the Nokia 3.1 Plus’ dual camera unit and the fingerprint scanner. Both phones weigh almost the same, but the Nokia 3.1 Plus has an edge when it comes to the in-hand feel.

Look, neither of them is a head-turner, but the Nokia 3.1 Plus looks and feels arguably better than the Redmi 6 Pro’s plain Jane looks. So, if you ask me, I’ll say the Nokia 3.1 Plus should be your pick if you don’t want to compromise on the looks.

Moving on, both the phones also come with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a micro USB port. I’d like to give bonus points to Nokia for throwing in a dedicated slot for a microSD card as well. Good job, Nokia!

Display: Notch or No-Notch?

The Nokia 3.1 Plus sports a 6-inch HD+ 18:9 aspect ratio display, whereas the Redmi 6 Pro has a 5.84-inch FHD+ 19:9 panel. Yes, the Redmi 6 Pro is a clear winner here. I personally had no issues with the Nokia 3.1 Plus display, but there’s no denying that the FHD+ display looks way better than the Nokia 3.1 Plus.

That being said, I still prefer the classic no-notch design of the Nokia 3.1 Plus. It could be just me, but I had a great time-consuming media on the Nokia 3.1 Plus without having to put up with a notch.

Cameras

The Nokia 3.1 Plus comes with a 13MP + 5MP dual camera setup on the rear, which on paper seems to be better than the Redmi 6 Pro’s 12MP + 5MP combination. On the front, again the Nokia 3.1 Plus’ 8MP selfie shooter sounds better than the Redmi 6 Pro’s 5MP shooter. So, does the Nokia 3.1 Plus takes better photos than the Redmi 6 Pro? Take a look for yourself:

Hardware And Performance

As mentioned earlier, both phones are not in the same league when it comes to the internal specs. The Redmi 6 Pro’s Snapdragon 625 processor easily outperforms the Helio P22 found inside the Nokia 3.1 Plus. The Redmi 6 Pro also comes with up to 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, whereas the Nokia 3.1 Plus maxes out at 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.

But that’s not to say that the Nokia 3.1 Plus is pathetic when it comes to the performance. I am glad to report that the stock Android running on the Nokia 3.1 Plus keeps thing nice and smooth. I found it to be sluggish at times, but it shouldn’t have any trouble handling day-to-day tasks with ease. When it comes to running games and intensive applications, though, the Redmi 6 Pro is a clear winner.

Software

As mentioned earlier, the Nokia 3.1 Plus is running a stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. I don’t hate the MIUI 9 on Xiaomi’s Redmi 6 Pro, but I’ll pick a device running a stock version of Android any day of the week over the other.

Battery

On the battery front, the Redmi 6 Pro edges out the Nokia 3.1 Plus with a better battery. We are looking at 4,000 mAh battery on the Redmi 6 Pro against the 3,500 mAh battery in the Nokia 3.1 Plus. However, I’d say it is a close one considering the fact that Nokia 3.1 Plus is running a stock version of Android and it has fewer pixels to work with. I’ve been using the Nokia 3.1 Plus for the last few days myself, and I can confidently say that this phone can easily power through a full day of usage. I consider myself a moderate-heavy user, and as you can see from the screenshots below, I am ending my days with 6 hours of screen-on-time (SoT).

Nokia 3.1 Plus vs Redmi 6 Pro: Which One Should You Buy?

Well, if you are looking for a simple answer, I’d say the Redmi 6 Pro is undoubtedly a better phone. The Nokia 3.1 Plus, though it shares a lot of similarities, fails to impress on various parameters. Yes, it has an impressive build quality and it runs on stock Android, but the performance is frankly middling.

It is also worth pointing out that the base model of Redmi 6 Pro costs Rs. 500 less than the Nokia 3.1 Plus (at the time of writing this article). So, if you are fishing for pennies, then just go for the Redmi 6 Pro.

FAQ:

Yes, recording phone calls is illegal in some US States, depending on where you live or why you’re doing it. Before you record a call, inform the other party first to avoid getting into troubl

However, iPhone doesn’t record high-quality audio, especially when using the Memos App.

Technically, you cannot prevent someone from recording your calls. You can’t control the apps on other people’s phones. However, there are some hints that can be pointed out if someone’s recording your phone call.

Typically, when someone is recording other people, there will likely be a beeping sound at the beginning of the call. If you’re not sure where the call is coming from and you hear a beeping sound, chances are you are being recorded.

You should also be aware of the person who’s calling you and the topic they’re talking about. If any of these feels strange, it could be a signal they’re trying to gather information from the conversation.

Although it isn’t perfect, you can go to the control center in your phone’s settings, choose the customize control option and tap the “-” option on the screen recording and disable it.

Some blocking apps claim to prevent people from recording your calls, but these aren’t secure and could be scams, so be wary whenever you install them on your phone.

Conclusion:

Call recording apps can be helpful, but some people may dummy it, forcing Apple not to include this feature on their devices. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t record calls completely.

A third-party app or even the Voice Memos App on your phone can easily record calls on your iPhone. Select the option which suits you best.

Best Iphone 6/6S Wireless Charging Cases

The wireless charging case can be a fashion statement for young users of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s. Still, for any working professional or a businessman, who has to travel extensively, wireless charging is essential. Communication devices like iPhones need strong battery support, especially when users are away from home or office. A power bank is a good option, but the bank’s bulk requires some space in users’ travel bags. Therefore, a wireless charging case is a better option as it doesn’t add bulk to the phone.

Moreover, users don’t need any separate space to store the wireless charging case. We have listed here some of the best wireless charging cases for the iPhone 6 for you.

1. Gorilla Gadgets

As the name suggests, Gorilla Gadgets brings a robust wireless charging case for your iPhone. With its ten years of manufacturing experience and thousands of units used by people, you get complete peace of mind. ANGELIOX has manufactured a high-quality case with TPU material, which helps you charge your phone faster. The material is soft, strong, and feels good when you touch.

5. Antye

One more wireless case from Antye reserves its place on the list. As far as the case is concerned, it is almost identical to the one above in the list. What sets apart is the wireless charging pad included in the purchase. Why buy two things separately and then worry about compatibility?

The wireless charging pad has built-in safety features that protect your iPhone from overcharging, overcurrent, overheating, and other charging related issues. Lastly, it is available only in black color.

6. ZENS

Zens has created a slim wireless charging case for iPhone 6/6s along with an equally attractive charging pad. If you wish to charge your iPhone traditionally, plug in the micro-USB cable. You do not need to remove the case.

The charging pad is also quite presentable to keep on the office desk as it is slim without unnecessary bulk. Lastly, there are a few model variations available to choose from.

7. STACKED

Say bye-bye to your charging cable and bring home this versatile wireless battery case. One of the most useful features of the case is that it is a battery case as well. The 2750mAh power pack battery provides you with 100% extra juice.

You are never running out of battery on your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s. In a single product, you will get the charging/protective case, AC wireless charging wall, and a powerful battery case.

That’s all folks!

Your take!

To my mind, the battery case is a lifesaver, especially when you are far away from traditional sources of power supply. Unlike power banks and car chargers, battery cases are more comfortable to carry as they stick to your phone as a cover or case.

Supposed Iphone 6 Frame Leaks: It’s Ultra

The notoriously unreliable Digitimes last month called for a larger size iPhone in May and today Chinese website Huanqiu reiterated that an iPhablet would arrive in time for the next Galaxy S smartphone confirmed for May 2014.

The next iPhone – let’s call it the iPhone 6 for the convenience sake – is generally thought to come in two sizes, one 4.7-inch and the larger one with a phablet-grade screen measuring a whopping 5.7 inches diagonally.

And now, images of an alleged frame have appeared online to suggest a notably thinner appearance compared to the current-generation iPhone 5s. Could this part be genuine? My two cents are right below…

Not much to be gleaned from the low-resolution shots other than the visibly thinner frame versus the current-generation Apple handset.

Bear in mind that in the run-up to the official iPhone 5s announcement C Tech leaked a number of parts which later proved authentic. As for this part, maybe it’s an early trial production part though it doesn’t look genuine to me.

It could be also an aftermarket component, a hoax or simply one of the parts belonging to an iPhone prototype that never materialized.

For starters, what’s up with the edges having an old style roundedness to them? To me, this looks like a mid-plate, a design Apple long abandoned in favor of Unibody construction.

For additional analysis, read Eric Slivka’s take over at MacRumors.

Much of the next iPhone’s supposed thinness should be the work of its presumably larger form-factor making additional room for components such as the wireless and memory chips, the main processor, the cameras and the battery.

The media is of course quick to spell doom for Apple unless it jumps on the phablet bus. Take, for example, a recent write-up by Gareth Beavis over at TechRadar:

I don’t mean to sound alarmist, but 2014 could well be the year that Apple makes its biggest mistake in recent history.

No, I’m not talking about the iWatch – I still think that could actually be rather good – no, Apple has to, HAS TO, bring out a large screen version of the iPhone or it’s going to really struggle to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.

Countering his notion is Ben Bajarin who reminds us Apple hasn’t become so successful by skating where the puck is. “Apple has customers not competition,” he explains:

Folks claim that because Apple’s competition is doing something that Apple should also or they will lose. Yet what I love about Apple’s strategy is that it is never around what the competition is doing. Apple marches to beat of their own drum.

Apple has customers not competition. The decisions they make as a company are not based around what their competition is doing but around what is best for their customers. Like it or not, this is their strategy.

Sounds just about right to me, which isn’t saying that an Apple phablet of sorts isn’t being cooked up in Jony Ive’s kitchen as we speak.

In fact, when you take into account what Tim Cook & Co. have done last year with the iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina display, it’s becoming clear that 2014 could very well be the year of two form-factor iPhones, both based on exactly the same internals and design, the only difference being the screen size and price.

Make sense?

Does Apple really HAVE TO bring out a larger screen iPhone in 2014 or else…?
