In terms of product announcements during that timeframe, Apple was relatively quiet; it expanded iTunes Radio to Australia and added NPR support, rebranded iOS in the Car as CarPlay with compatible cars arriving later this year, introduced a cheaper 8GB iPhone 5c in several non-US markets, replaced the iPad 2 with the iPad 4 at the same price point, and announced its worldwide developer conference scheduled for June 2. Apple is currently positioned to save new products for the latter half of the year as it did in 2013.

-Cook continues to cite 85% of iPhone 4s buyers were first time iPhone buyers, 69% iPhone 5c buyers, many switchers from Android (62% for iPhone 4s, 60% for iPhone 5c)

-Next question coming from Gene Munster (you all know him, Apple TV guru), asks about removal of hobby label from Apple TV and Amazon Fire’s HBO deal

-Cook says Apple TV being over a billion dollar market made it not a hobby, says Apple TV already has HBO GO, says Amazon got older content to fill its HBO need, says 20 million Apple TV boxes sold

-Call wraps up, will be available on iTunes for a brief amount of time

Earnings Before Interest And Tax

Definition of Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT)

Download Corporate Valuation, Investment Banking, Accounting, CFA Calculator & others

EBIT refers to the operating income the company earns by conducting its operations. It means the company’s net Income (Revenue-Expense) to calculate which tax and interest expenses are not deducted.

The formula for Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT)

Earnings before Interest and Taxes(EBIT) is calculated as follows:

Revenue or sales xxx

Direct Expenses:

(-)Cost of material xxx

(-)Cost of Labor xxx

(-)other direct expenses xxx

Gross Profit xxx

(-)indirect expenses xxx

(excluding interest and taxes)

Net profit before interest and Taxes xxx

It can also be calculated in another manner where:

EBIT = Net Profit After Deducting Interest and Taxes +interest Expense + Tax Expenses

Example of Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT)

For Example, The income statement of XYZ Inc is as follows:

Amount (in $)

Revenue from a sales operation 70,000

cost of raw material 25,000

cost of labor directed toward manufacturing 18,500

other direct expenses 6,500

 Indirect Expenses 16,000

Interest expenses 425

Income from interest 112

Net non-operating income 415

Total Earnings before deduction of taxes 4,102

Income taxes 3,500

Net earnings 602

To calculate Earnings before Interest and Taxes, we have to deduct direct and indirect expenses from the Net revenue, excluding interest and tax expenses. Other incomes are also included in the calculation of EBIT. So, the calculation of EBIT is as follows:

Amount (in $)

Revenue from a sales operation                 70,000

(-)Direct Expenses                 50,000

Gross Profit                 20,000

(-)Indirect Expenses                 16,000

Net operating Profit                   4,000

(+)Net operating income                       415

(+)Interest Income                       112

EBIT                   4,527

EBIT is calculated as

EBIT = Net Earnings +Income Taxes+ Interest Expenses

EBIT = 602 + 3,500 + 425

EBIT = $4,527

EBIT and Net Profit

For the calculation of EBIT, interest expense and Tax Expenses has to be ignored. The government, shareholders, or lenders use EBIT to analyze the company’s profitability. It includes deducting operating expenses like Rent of office, Salary of employees, electricity bills, printing, stationary, etc. So, before calculating the Net Profit of the company, a calculation of EBIT should be done. While calculating the company’s Net profit, the cost to operate a business, like interest expense, depreciation on assets, and tax expenses, has to be deducted from Earnings before interest and Taxes. Net profit is used while calculating earnings per share of the company. The company’s shareholders commonly use this figure as a dividend from this profit. The relationship between EBIT and Net Profit is shown below:

Revenue or sales xxx

Direct Expenses:

(-)Cost of material xxx

(-)Cost of Labor xxx

(-)other direct expenses xxx

Gross Profit xxx

(-)indirect expenses xxx

(excluding interest and taxes)

EBIT xxx

(-)Interest xxx

(-)Income taxes xxx

Net Profit xxx

Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) Analysis

EBIT is calculated in different ways, and it is not included in the company’s financial statements. It always starts with revenue from sales operations and subtracts direct and indirect expenses, excluding interest and tax expenses. Non-operating incomes are also included in the calculation in some cases. Interest income is included or excluded from the calculation of EBIT based on its source. If credit is provided to the customer as a crucial portion of its business, then this income is treated as operating income and included in the EBIT computation. If interest is received on investment or in the form of late fees from customers, it may not be included in the EBIT computation. EBIT is also calculated in reverse order by taking Net profit after interest and taxes and adding interest and tax expenses.

Importance of Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT)

It is important to calculate Earnings before interest and Taxes as it provides ideas to the owners about the profits generated by the company from its core operations without taking the cost of capital and income taxes into account.

Net Profit can be calculated only after Earnings before interest and taxes.

The shareholders use the net profit for calculating their Earnings per share.

Advantages of EBIT

Advantages are provided and discussed below-

With the help of Earnings before Interest and Taxes (EBIT), investors can compare different companies in the same industry. For example, suppose an investor wants to purchase a share. In that case, the EBIT of different companies with different rates of taxes under the same industry can be compared to ascertain the base profitability of the companies because the tax rate may vary from company to company.

Some industries require huge investments in fixed assets to produce goods and services. To Finance, these investment companies have to raise debt. Companies in the same industry can raise debt based on their need. So, the amount of interest may vary from company to company. So to analyze the company’s earning potential, interest expense is excluded from operating income by the investor.

EBIT is a more reliable source of comparison among different companies as it is not considering the effect of tax rates and interest expenses, which may vary from company to company.

As the calculation of EBIT includes the deduction of depreciation, sometimes it can lead to misleading results when different companies are compared under the same industry. For example: If an investor compares a company with a huge investment in fixed assets with another company with few fixed assets, the EBIT of the former company turns out to be lower as depreciation expense reduces the profit of the former company.

Thus, EBIT is calculated by reducing operating expenses from the operating income before considering interest and tax expenses. It is calculated before the calculation of the final profit of the company. It is a more reliable source of comparing the profitability of the companies in the same industry than Net profit, as taxes rate and interest expenses may vary from company to company.

2014: The Year Of The Iphone

There are some technologies that happened way earlier than they had any right to. Frankly, putting a man on the moon in the days when the Apollo Guidance Computer really did have less power than a pocket calculator was an insane achievement.

And then there are those technologies that have taken way, way longer than they should have done – with home automation heading the list. The main reason it was such a slow-burn was the lack of a standard interface (X.10 never really established itself in the home).

2014, however, looks set to be the year in which all that changes, with the iPhone the new standard interface. Steve Jobs once said that the Mac was the hub at the center of our digital lives; this year, it looks like the iPhone is taking over the crown …

We thought it would be useful to have a roundup of a bunch of the things you’ll be able to connect to with your iPhone this year, some of them already available and others launching soon.

Audiovisual equipment. This one is already well-established. Between Apple TV, AirPlay, iPhone remote apps, TV streaming apps and even multi-room wifi speaker system, there’s already not much you can’t do in the way of getting content to or from an iPhone or iPad, as well as using your iPhone as a remote for pretty much all your AV equipment.

Lighting. Change your lighting at will, or program it to switch on or off on a schedule, or when triggered by motion. Wemo provides remote-controlled plug sockets that tend mostly to be used for floor and desk lamps, and has just announced the addition of smart light-bulbs. Philips, of course, already has its own multi-colored Hue lightbulbs. There are also a number of iPhone-controlled table lamps, like the Holi mood lamp.

Heating. Control your heating from anywhere, have it learn your usage patterns or have it come on and off automatically as residents leave and approach your home. In the U.S., best-known is the Nest learning thermostat, while Europe has the Tado intelligent thermostat. Both use an iPhone app as the primary interface. There are others out there, and will likely be more launched in the course of the year. Tado has also said that an iPhone-controller for air-conditioners is on the way.

Door locks. August announced its Yves Behar-designed digital door lock last May, though it is not scheduled to launch until this spring. Okidokeys announced its own rival system yesterday, also set for spring availability, and there are again others on the way. Goji too is expecting to launch, you guessed it, in the spring. By the summer, no self-respecting gadgeteer will be unlocking their doors manually.

Home security. We’ve of course long had network cams whose video feeds can be viewed on an iPhone, with Dropcam Pro one of our favorites. But we’re also seeing the emergence of more specific security-orientated products, like Canary, expected to be available from July. Again, expect to see more product announcements soon.

Smoke detectors. Until recently, the height of smoke-detector tech was wirelessly-linked units, so that when one was triggered, they all sounded. Nest has improved on this with a detector you can silence by waving at it when your culinary skills have let you down, and which sends alerts to an iPhone app.

Home appliances. There have been high-end kitchen appliances which allow iPhone control for some time now, so you can put something in the oven in the morning and set it cooking once you know what time you’re leaving the office, but we’re expecting to see this reach more affordable products over the course of the year. Judging by a flurry of products promised by Belkin, there’s not very much in the way of appliances than won’t be iPhone-controlled before the year is out: the company announced an iPhone-controlled Crock-Pot slow cooker yesterday, and is promising this will be followed by a smart coffee maker, an air purifier and a space heater. There’s an iKettle on the way, and even an iPhone-connected toothbrush …

Toys. This is going to be huge. We’ve already seen quadrocopters, large and small. The awesome Anki race cars. Spy-tanks. Robot balls. Even an iPhone-controlled paper airplane! By next holidays, it’ll be hard to find a toy that doesn’t link to an iPhone app. Plus, of course, there are games controllers for use with iPhone games from SteelSeries, Logitech and Moga.

A year ago, you had to be a certified gadgeteer to be controlling anything with an iPhone. By the end of this year, your great-aunt Mildred will be doing it. There are already so many connected devices out there that Wolfram has created the Connected Devices Project to catalogue them all. It’s going to be an exciting year.

Apple Set To Beat Q2 Projections, Product Shortages Ending

Several financial analysts have issued earnings previews for Apple, which reports its June quarter figures on July 20, and all expect the firm to beat its own projections as well as the Wall Street consensus. Among the findings, they note that the iPad’s success is not coming at the expense of Mac sales.

Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall puts June 2010 estimates at $14.5 billion and earnings per share at $3.24. Piper Jaffrey’s Gene Munster puts the firm at $15.6 billion and EPS of $2.99, while Maynard Um of UBS projects $14.8 billion in sales and EPS of $3.01. Marshall’s revenue number is lower because he pushed sales of more than one million units of iPhone sales into the third quarter of the year due to an initial product shortage. Apple sold 1.7 million iPhone 4sin the first three days of availability.

For its part, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has projected revenue in the range of about $13.0 billion to $13.4 billion and diluted earnings per share in the range of about $2.28 to $2.39. A consensus estimate from analysts by Thomson Reuters puts Apple at $14.5 billion and EPS of $3.06.

As good as Q2 is shaping up to be, the third quarter could be a real tipping point because the analysts expect iPad and iPhone 4 shortages to clear up by then. The impressive iPad and iPhone 4 sales have actually been hamstrung by pronounced parts shortages limiting product availability and even bigger sales.

“Looking ahead, we believe management will again be conservative with the outlook, but expect continued ramp of the iPhone 4 and benefits from back-to-school spending to drive continued momentum,” Um wrote in his report.

Will the Mac be cannibalized by other Apple products?

The iPad is already at the three million sold markand is expected to ship a total of 3.3 million units for the quarter, despite constant shortages and product constraint. So far, it does not seem to be hurting the MacBook. From the May NPD data, it appears that the iPad has a minimal cannibalization impact on Mac sales, and could be slightly cannibalizing iPod sales,” wrote Munster in his research report.

“We believe in the long run, Mac cannibalization will exist, but will be minimal. Apple has successfully limited the iPad functionality to primarily content consumption, vs. content creation on a Mac. And relative to the iPod, the physical size of an iPad provides a meaningfully different value proposition,” he added.

The device most at risk is the iPod, already under pressure since it has reached market saturation. The iPhone has iPod capabilities, and now there’s the iPad that also has iPod capabilities. iPod sales are projected to be between nine and 10 million units in the second quarter.

“The iPhone/iPad has successfully integrated the functionality of an iPod into a sleek smartphone/media player and has effectively rendered a significant portion of the iPod product family obsolete,” Marshall wrote in his report. “Ever since the June ’07 introduction of the iPhone and the April ’10 introduction of the iPad, there has been a marked deceleration of unit sales of iPods on a year-to-year basis.”

The Best Ipad Calendar Apps (2014 Edition)

A few months ago, we shared our favorite calendar apps for the iPhone. We are big on making lists, organizing, and planning out our lives around here. One list is just not enough, especially if you use your iPad and iPhone for very different things.

A few months ago, iPad users were finally given the gift of Fantastical 2. This great looking useful app does much more than just increase the size of the calendar. Thanks to the Fantastical Dashboard, users have complete access to a variety of views on one screen, including a weekly summary, monthly quick-look, and daily events list. The app features natural language detection so you can add an event by typing something like, “Dinner with mom on Wednesday at 5” and the details will be added to the calendar. This app is available for $14.99.

Sunrise Calendar

This app makes transitioning to a third-party calendar on the iPad seamless since it is similar to the stock Calendar app. You can connect directly to a variety of social networking sites, like Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, and more. Add events from a convenient pop up window so you don’t even have to change the view. Use icons to quickly identify event categories. View the week ahead from the weekly planner view for detailed information of your upcoming schedule. This app is available for free.

Readdle’s rich-featured calendar app used to be my favorite app on the iPad until Fantastical 2 came around. I still love it. It has a great daily and monthly view so you can quickly switch between sections to see your schedule at a glance or in more detail. Create events, edit project lists, and get reminders sent through text message. Sync with your native Reminders app or Google Tasks to keep all your projects at your fingertips. The app features natural language detection so you can quickly add events just by typing, “Interview with Apple tomorrow at noon.” This app is available for $6.99.

What better way to describe your app than by just calling it “Awesome.” This app features three-in-one productivity with to do lists, photo notes, and weather. The to-do list creator lets you plan your events to ensure nothing gets left out of important meetings. The photo notes allow you to add important visual cues to help you and others see what is on the agenda. The weather report shows you an overview for the five-day forecast. This app is available for $6.99.

Calvetica Calendar

For a hearty and robust calendar, you may want to take a look at this one. It features continuous scrolling for monthly and weekly views so you don’t have to swipe between months or weeks. You can customize alerts to have notifications that are louder and longer than Apple’s native Calendar app. Plus, hit the snooze to check the notification later. It has a highly customizable recurrence setup so whenever your event repeats, you’ll be able to quickly program it. This app is available for $2.99.

Daily Routine

If you have trouble keeping a daily routine, there’s an app for that. This app helps you remember when to take a lunch break, when to check the mail, and when to drink a glass of water. Use it to hone a precise, productivity-focused day so you don’t lose precious time trying to figure out what to do next. It syncs with the iOS Calendar app so you can incorporate your events with you daily routine. This app is available for $1.99.

Pocket Informant

I’ve said before that Pocket Informant is the powerhouse of productivity apps. I know a few  CEOs of companies that use the PI standard. You won’t be disappointed with the incredible features this app has to offer. The app recently received a huge update that brings TravelAssist, which defaults travel itineraries to whatever the local time zone is. PI also now features iBeacon support. The app acts as its own iBeacon to send you notifications when you get near a friend or co-worker. The monthly scrolling vertical view makes it easy and convenient to see your schedule at a glance. This app is available for free.

This app is a great find for users of Outlook on PC. Use it to sync your work-based calendar program and always be in command of your schedule. Drag-to-drop events when you need to change the date or time. Create customized recurrences for repeating events. Create templates for events you add often, but aren’t recurring. Subscribe to additional calendars, like national holidays and sporting events. Sync with iCloud, Google, Exchange, Outlook, and Yahoo for a diverse calendar experience. This app is available for $2.99.

It takes a student (or at least a former student) to realize that homework needs a planner app of its own. When you are cramming 23 units into one semester, every second of the day counts and one missed day on the syllabus could spell disaster for your GPA. This app is specifically designed to keep you on track with your school activities. Color code classes. Add instructor’s notes. Organize end-of-semester projects. Set reminders for when homework is due or when a test is coming up. This app is available for free.

Whenever I have a list of productivity apps, one question that gets asked is “Can I share stuff with my family using this app?” The answer for this app is a definitive, “yes.” You can share calendar events, grocery lists, shopping lists, to-do lists, and more. Create a calendar and share it with your band mates, roommates, or co-workers. You can even have group chats regarding schedules, events, and more. This app is available for free.

Tell us what you think. Do you use the stock calendar app or a third party one? If so, which one do you think is the best iPad calendar app? Make sure to share your opinion below.

Don’t forget to check out our previous best-of lists.
