I described the Apple Mail bug I experienced with my new MacBook Pro, which I was relieved to find was not a hardware fault but rather a macOS bug affecting both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

It has rendered Mail unusable for now, which led to me trying – and really liking – the Spark email client.

I used to try out new email clients on a somewhat regular basis, just to see what was out there, and I have used a couple of third-party apps for extended periods – Postbox being one and Airmail another.

But at some point, I decided life was too short, and I standardized more on Apple’s own apps for Mail and other things.

Apple Mail bug

The application memory error, however, forced my hand. I asked my colleagues which email apps they would recommend for the Mac and was given a good steer to Spark – listed in our “best email apps for the Mac” roundup earlier in the year.

I’m not going to write a full review for the simple reason that I don’t yet know it well enough. It’s a relatively busy time on several fronts, so my priority has been to get my email up and running as it was before, in terms of filtering and so on, rather than explore what else the app can do.

I do have to say that I don’t think the app is super-intuitive. For example, a simple setting like having account names rather than email addresses appear in the sidebar was not where I expected it to be. But that aside, it was painless to set up.

Spark email app views

One thing I like a lot is that you can switch very simply back and forth between what Spark calls ‘Classic’ view – all your mail in reverse date order – and its own Smart view. The latter is Spark’s own attempt to sort your email into categories, like personal mail (People), Notifications, and Newsletters. This is very helpful once you have it tamed, but initially, I just wanted a Mail-like view, and there are still times when this is more convenient – so I love that you can tab between the two views.

I personally found Spark’s Notifications and Newsletters categorization rather random, so I disabled these. However, I really like the three categories I have enabled: People, Pins, and Seen.

As soon as you’ve read an email, it is automatically moved to the Seen list – so People is just my unread mail. Pinned mail appears immediately below People, which is where I want it as I pin a lot of mail to be dealt with later. Seen lets me sort through any non-urgent mail later.

If you’re an Inbox Zero person, as I used to be before I wrote it off as unsustainable, this would help a lot, as once you’ve dealt any Seen mail, you can just empty that category.

I also love how easy it is to see only the category you’re dealing with right then and there. I tend to do an initial skim-read of mail, at the end of which I will do one of four things:

Delete it

Reply immediately if it’s urgent or only needs a one-liner

Pin it

Leave it as read

I’m probably keeping it

As I say, I have had a tendency to revert back to Apple apps as a way of simplifying life. All I’ve done for now in Spark is get my essential filters set up, so I do have more work to do – and it’s possible at that point I might find a show-stopper or two.

But I see no sign of that yet. My only complaint to date is that the color-coding isn’t as visible as it could be in the sidebar, and I haven’t yet found a way to change that (I’m using the Light theme, and the Dark theme leaves the sidebar unchanged).

As of now, I’ve removed Mail from my dock and am in no hurry to see whether Apple has fixed the problem.

How To Factory Reset Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, Or Imac

When you factory reset your Mac, you erase the device and reinstall a new version of macOS. You may need to do this before selling it, giving it away, or troubleshooting complex issues.

How you reset a Mac will depend on its hardware configuration and operating system version, among other factors. We’ll show you how to erase and reset a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, MacPro, or an iMac to factory settings using different techniques.

Factory Reset Mac with Apple T2 Security Chip

The T2 Security Chip is Apple’s second-generation, security-focused, custom silicon chipset for Mac computers. If your Mac has a T2 Security Chip and runs macOS Monterey, follow the steps below to reset it to factory settings.

The Mac computers listed below ship with a T2 Security Chip:

MacBook Air models launched between 2023-2023.

MacBook Pro models launched between 2023-2023.

iMac (Retina 5K, 2023)

Mac mini (2023)

Mac Pro (2023) and Mac Pro (Rack, 2023)

macOS Monterey has an “Erase Assistant” that does all the heavy lifting needed to factory reset Macs with T2 Security Chip. Simply run the assistant, sit back, and wait for it to erase your Mac’s data.

Connect your Mac to the internet and follow the steps below to reset it using the Erase Assistant.

Select the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen and select System Preferences to open the Apple menu.

Keep the System Preferences window open and select System Preferences on the menu bar. Next, select Erase All Content and Settings.

That will launch the macOS Monterey Erase Assistant.

Enter your Mac’s administrator account password and select OK or press Return on the keyboard.

Select Continue to proceed.

The Erase Assistant will remove your data, Apple ID account, third-party apps and extensions, settings & preferences, etc. The data erasure process will also remove Find My and Activation Lock. So, you can’t locate or track your Mac after the operation.

You may also be prompted to create a Time Machine backup of your data to an external hard drive.

Enter your Apple ID password and select Continue to proceed.

Select Erase All Content & Settings on the confirmation prompt to start the factory reset process.

Your Mac will shut down, come back on, and display a progress bar. Wait for a few minutes and connect your Mac to the internet (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet) when a “Hello” message appears on the screen. That’ll activate your Mac. Follow the Setup Assistant’s instructions to set up your Mac from scratch.

Factory Reset Mac Using Disk Utility

Disk Utility is the best tool to factory reset Intel-based Mac computers running macOS Big Sur or older. Of course, you can also use the tool to reset Apple Silicon Mac computers running macOS Monterey.

You need to boot into macOS Recovery to factory reset your Mac using Disk Utility. If you’re using an Intel-based Mac, reset its NVRAM and unpair Bluetooth devices before performing a factory reset.

For Macs with Apple Silicon or M1 chip, press and hold the power button until your Mac displays the Startup Options page. Afterward, select Options and select Continue to enter the recovery mode.

Select the admin account on the macOS Recovery page, enter the password, and select Next.

Select Disk Utility and select Continue.

Select the startup disk (Macintosh HD – Data) on the sidebar.

Can’t find the “Macintosh HD – Data” volume? Select View at the top of the Disk Utility window, select Show All Devices, and check again.

After selecting the Macintosh HD volume, select Erase on the toolbar.

Enter a name for the drive and select a preferred disk format/file system—APFS or Mac OS Extended. Disk Utility will pick the best file system/format for your Mac’s hard drive type—SSD or HDD. Select Erase Volume Group to erase your Mac’s disk drive permanently.

Select Erase if you don’t find an “Erase Volume Group” button on the page.

You may be required to provide the password to the Apple ID account linked to your Mac. When the disk erasure is complete, reinstall macOS and follow the onscreen instructions to set up your Mac.

Quit Disk Utility, return to the macOS Recovery page, and select Reinstall macOS [Monterey].

Remotely Factory Reset Mac on the Find My App 

“Find My” doesn’t just help you track and locate your Apple devices. You can use the tool to remotely erase (read: reset) your devices, too. To factory reset a lost or stolen Mac, open the Find My app on any Apple device linked to the same Apple ID as the Mac, and follow the steps below.

Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad, head to the “Devices” tab, and tap your Mac.

Tap Erase This Device at the bottom of the Mac info card.

Tap Continue on the confirmation prompt.

Finally, tap Erase to reset or erase your Mac remotely. If your Mac is stolen/lost, type a message for anyone who finds it. Be sure to include your contact information—phone number, email address, etc.—in the display message.

Factory Reset Mac on the Web

You can remotely reset your Mac using the web client of the Find My tool. Follow the steps below to reset your Mac from another device using a web browser. 

Head to the iCloud Find My iPhone website and sign in to your Apple ID.

Tap the All Devices drop-down icon and select your Mac in the list of devices.

Select Erase on the confirmation prompt.

Remotely erasing your Mac requires an internet connection, and the process isn’t always instant. The erasure starts when your (stolen or lost) Mac connects to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

If you tap the chevron button while in the middle of customizing the Control Strip, you’ll gain access to more system functions and controls, allowing you to customize the full expanded Control Strip.

If a Touch Bar-enabled app supports customization, you can go to View → Customize Touch Bar while using the app to configure its key layout in the Touch Bar.

While editing an app’s Control Bar settings, you can quickly switch to editing the Control Strip just by giving it a tap.

Escape key

The escape key is located in the upper left-hand corner of the Control Bar, but it doesn’t align perfectly with the hardware keyboard keys directly below it. But if you’re a touch typist, your Escape key presses will still register, even if your finger doesn’t fully make contact with the key.

Sleep and wake

The Touch Bar will dim after 60 seconds, and time out completely 15 seconds later. To wake the Touch Bar, tap the Touch Bar, trackpad, or press a key on the keyboard

Trackpad + Touch Bar

macOS allows you to interface with both the trackpad and the Touch Bar simultaneously. This means that you can do things like move a shape in Pixelmator while, at the same time, changing its color or the size of its border.

Make Siri listen

When invoking Siri via the Touch Bar, you can touch and hold the Siri key to make it listen to your commands for the duration of your touch.

Persistent media scrubber

When playing media on your MacBook Pro, you’ll notice a persistent media scrubber in the Touch Bar. This scrubber is present when playing music via iTunes, Safari videos, QuickTime videos, etc. You can even use it to scrub through YouTube videos while watching via Safari.

What makes the scrubber nice is that it is always available when eligible media is playing, even if that media isn’t a part of the top-most window. No matter where you are on your Mac, you’ll see a handy media key on the left side of the Control Strip in the Touch Bar area. Simply tap that key to reveal media controls.

When used with Windows, the Touch Bar will display basic controls for things like keyboard brightness, screen brightness and volume. You also get access to the Escape key and pressing and holding the physical Function (fn) key will reveal a set of 12 function keys. You won’t of course, gain any of the other dynamic benefits that the Touch Bar is known for in macOS.

Evomail Review: A Modern Email App For Your Ipad

Mail clients are becoming a big deal in the App Store. Only a few weeks ago, Orchestra launched their popular Mailbox app to much fanfare. Before this, Twitter clients were trending, before that, RSS readers. Mail clients are likely to be the next wave of iOS apps for the months ahead.

Evomail is another mail client for the iPad to recently hit the App Store. This Gmail-specific app lets users access, organize, and respond to their mail in a way that incorporates Gmail’s interactions with Apple’s native Mail app…


As mail clients go, this one looks great. It has a classic design with clean features. It definitely has a modern business-like feel to it. The app can be used in portrait or landscape mode and looks about the same in either view. You just have more layers in portrait mode.

The app shows your email accounts at the far left of the screen, with your profile picture in a button at the top corner. The next section shows the inbox of the account you currently have selected. If you tap the three vertical lines at the top of the inbox, you will be able to see the email folders for that account.

To the far right is the actual email. When you have multiple emails in a single thread, all prior messages are listed in chronological order below the most current one.

Emails are created the same way they would be in Apple’s Mail app. When you enter the name of a person into the address line, a list of contacts will appear. To add an image, tap the attachment icon on the subject line.

The inbox, account folders, and messages are all displayed at the same time so that you can access any section without having to “tap back” to a different screen.

App Use

The first thing you will need to do is log into your Gmail account. You can have multiple accounts attached to Evomail, but at the moment, they must be Gmail accounts. The developers are promising other service support in the future. Once logged in, you will see your accounts listed on the right side of the app. The number of unread messages will be listed next to the account name.

Select one of your accounts to see your mail’s inbox. When you select the account, a new section will appear to the right that shows all mail in that account’s inbox. You can see your account’s different folders by tapping the icon in the section’s upper-left corner.

The folders will appear in a new section to the left of the inbox. Your labeled folders will have colored dots next to them.

You can label new mail in the inbox by tapping the label icon at the bottom of the screen. Once labeled, you can archive the mail by tapping the check mark icon right next to the label icon. To delete a currently selected mail item, tap the “x.”

You can also move, archive, or delete groups of mail by selecting the “Edit” tab in the inbox section.  You can then select any number of messages and then move them to a specific folder, archive them, or delete them all at once.

To respond to an email, tap one of the arrows at the bottom of the message. Like Apple’s Mail app, you can respond to the sender, reply to all, or forward to a new recipient. You can also respond to an email by swiping to the left from the current message. A response mail window will appear.

To start a new email, tap the create mail icon at the bottom left of the screen. You iPad’s contacts will automatically appear when you start typing into the address line. You can add images from your photo app, but you can’t attach documents.

The Good

This email client looks good and runs smoothly. I love being able to label messages and redirect them to their appropriate folder. I also like being able to see all messages in an email thread instead of only the most recent ones. Being able to see your account’s inbox, folders, and current message all on one screen is a very efficient use of the iPad’s screen.

The Bad

There are still some bugs to work out. On more than one occasion, I was unable to send an email. I’d tap the “Send” button and nothing would happen. When I closed the app in the multitasking bar and reopened it, it worked properly.

I also had trouble receiving email notifications. I only received two notifications in the two days that I used the app. One of the notifications came hours after the email was sent to me.

There is also no way to see the tutorial again after the first time. I wanted to know how to save an email address to my contacts, but wasn’t able to figure it out. The starting tutorial may have shown that, but I don’t remember and couldn’t find it in the app.

I also noticed a couple of bugs with the number of unread mail messages. Finally, I’d like to be able to join multiple account inboxes into a single inbox.


This email client costs $2.99. You are getting a fairly useful app for the price. However, because it is still in the early stages of existence, there are a few features that are missing and a lot of bugs to work out. If this were a free email client, I’d say it is a great bargain. However, for the three-dollar price tag, I wish it had launched with less bugs and more features.


Evomail is a great starting point for what will hopefully become an outstanding app. It looks fantastic, but has a couple of rough edges. First impressions are very important. Evomail is like a young go-getter entering the workforce who shows up to an interview wearing a really nice suit, but sports some ratty sneakers that smell bad. You will definitely give him a chance, but you hope he does something about those shoes.
