Suggested January 2024 Magic Eden 101: What To Know Before Creating Or Collecting

It once seemed that the Ethereum blockchain would always be the one-stop-shop for non-fungible tokens (NFTs). But times have changed since NFTs first gained mainstream attention, and the ecosystem has expanded far beyond the reach of a single blockchain. Now, NFTs are on nearly every major chain, and new NFT marketplaces are cropping up almost quarterly.

But these platforms aren’t all created equal.

Enter Magic Eden: A shiny new marketplace that does far more than facilitate transactions. With its exceptionally low transaction costs and no fees for listing NFTs, Magic Eden has become one of the strongest competitors in the NFT marketplace race.

The 101: What to know about Magic Eden

Magic Eden is the most popular NFT marketplace on the Solana blockchain. Launched on September 17 of 2023, it was created as a marketplace competitor that could act as a home base for NFT collections on SOL.

The platform is widely heralded for three things: the simplicity of its tools, its focus on community, and the diversity of tokens that can be created and collected on the platform (but more on this later).

In June 2023, Magic Eden raised $130M at a valuation of $1.6 billion. It goes without saying that this is a major feat for any startup, let alone one in the blockchain industry. And the raise was doubly impressive given that NFTs and crypto had been on a downward slump for the majority of 2023. This raises some notable questions: What’s so special about Magic Eden? Why would investors so adamantly support a platform that, at the time, was barely half a year old?

Well, let’s break it down.

Usability and Magic Eden

Magic Eden is one of the most user-friendly platforms on the market. It has quick processing times, solid security, and a host of compelling features that make buying and selling easy. For example, Magic Eden works hand-in-hand with creators on its Launchpad to help them create, mint, market, and successfully launch projects.

In an interview with nft now, COO Zhuoxun Yin said that the team spends a lot of its time ensuring that Magic Eden’s features are both cutting-edge and simple to use. He explained that, at the end of the day, the company needs to be focused on this blend of innovation in order to keep its product unique and stay ahead of the competition. “We aspire to be the first doing things. But that’s not just to create a headline and say we’re the first to do something. Innovation is still happening, and whoever is going to support new use cases really well is going to stand to benefit,” Yin said.

Additionally, Yin clarifies that he doesn’t just want the product to be easy to use, he wants it to be a joy to use. To this end, the platform’s team centers the user experience on exploration and discovery rather than price indexes.

“In the product experience of Magic Eden, you should be able to experience NFTs in a way without necessarily having to buy and sell them. It shouldn’t have to be a trader-focused mentality,” Yin said. “We let people discover content, play games on magic Eden…We want to be a discovery portal for the best Web3 content.”

Community-focused features

The next most important aspect of Magic Eden is its focus on community. Instead of expanding on the transactional nature of the NFT market, the founders of Magic Eden opted to create a user experience centered around the unique needs and desires of the creators and collectors that make up the NFT ecosystem.

How does this focus on community show up on Magic Eden? It all comes down to listening and responding. As Shan Shan puts it, “It’s not uncommon to see co-founder and CTO Sid Zhang respond to a feature request late at night, and then see that feature go live on the platform a few weeks later.”

The team’s community-centric focus is also readily seen within the Magic Eden Discord server. At 80,000+ members strong, the Discord almost feels like the hub of operations for the crew behind the influential marketplace. Anyone can join the Magic Eden community. Once there, they can also become a part of the conversation surrounding the platform’s management, initiatives, and more.

Enthusiasts are further incentivized to participate in decision-making by collecting one of Magic Eden’s Magic Ticket NFTs. These NFTs live in a collection featuring more than 30,000 tokens and grant holders access to Magic Eden’s Discord-based DAO, which is known as MagicDAO. There, community leaders deliver interconnectivity via social programs and rewards.

Yin explains this focus on community by noting that users often make the best ambassadors. “There are definitely a lot of things you can do from a top-down standpoint, but I think what’s really important is actually growing that grassroots interest and connectivity in the NFT ecosystem. I think that’s something we really do invest a lot of time and resources into. And I think we’re also really good at it,” he said.

Diversity of projects and blockchains

Finally, the diversity of projects on Magic Eden gives it a leg up on the competition. Mainly, this comes down to the variety of NFTs and experiences available on the platform and the ability to collect items cross-chain on Ethereum and Solana.

In terms of content hosted on Magic Eden, the platform excels in both PFPs and gaming. As PFP NFTs continue to maintain popularity within the NFT market, a range of these types of collections continue to dominate Magic Eden, with Okay Bears being among the most successful.

On the gaming side, Magic Eden is a great place for users to not only collect blockchain gaming NFTs, but to play games as well. With a growing roster of tokenized games, the platform is quickly becoming a one-stop shop for gaming purchases and activities.

And then there is the diversity in the blockchains. While the platform was built on Solana, in August 2023, Magic Eden announced that it planned to add and integrate Ethereum NFTs.

While we’ve seen other marketplaces like OpenSea add support for a range of NFT blockchains, Magic Eden could be one of the first to implement a cross-currency trading product to allow users to browse and purchase both Solana and Ethereum NFTs using SOL, ETH, or credit cards.

According to Huang, this move is all part of a grand vision to bring the Solana and Ethereum collector communities closer together by way of Magic Eden. “I think if you fuse these two communities together, you’ll realize it’s not really about SOL vs. ETH , but that there’s just a giant group of people who love NFTs. And we can deliver them cross-chain experiences that there are actually meaningful for them,” said Huang.

For projects on Ethereum hoping to launch a collection on Solana and vice versa, Huang says Magic Eden is the place to be. “When people realize that you’re not really constrained by a blockchain — based on the transaction currency that you use — then it’ll unlock a whole set of new experiences and potential.”

How to use Magic Eden: For creators

So, how do creators get started on Magic Eden? Well, there are a few different methods. It’s important to note, though, that you’ll need a Magic Eden account to both create and collect NFTs on the platform.

To set up an account on Magic Eden, you’ll need a Solana wallet. We recommend checking out Phantom, which is one of the most popular software wallets for collecting NFTs on SOL. Once you’ve created a wallet or already have one, watch Magic Eden’s video on how to connect it to their website.

And when it’s time to mint an NFT, creators can simply list their collections on the Magic Eden platform. Yep, it’s as easy as that. Whether you’ve already launched a project or have a mint coming up, you can head over to the Magic Eden Creator Hub, follow a few prompts, and submit your collection for verification. Watch the video below for an in-depth look at how this process works.

The other option for minting on Magic Eden is the platform’s launchpad. Billed as a more exclusive section of the marketplace, Magic Eden only accepts 3 percent of all Launchpad applications in an endeavor to feature only the best genuine and innovative projects.

Through the launchpad, creators can expect the greatest exposure and widest reach on the Magic Eden marketplace, more potential for secondary trading, and a hassle-free mint with dedicated development support. Again, this is a more exclusive section of the Magic Eden marketplace, and only a select few make it in.

Regardless of which avenue you travel, there are always fees associated with minting NFTs. And while you likely won’t lose out on too much SOL while creating a collection, Magic Eden employs a two-percent sales fee on the final sale price of every transaction. The platform also allows NFT creators to set their own royalty percentages — if you’re into that kind of thing.

How to use Magic Eden: For collectors

Launching an NFT project on Magic Eden can feel a bit daunting, but collecting on the platform couldn’t be easier. If you’ve already been collecting NFTs on Ethereum or Tezos, getting started with Magic Eden and Solana should be a breeze.

Popular NFT collections on Magic Eden

Unsure where to start once you’ve set yourself up to collect NFTs on Magic Eden? Here are some of the most popular collections on the platform. These should give you a sense of what the marketplace has to offer:

Okay Bears is a PFP collection that has easily become one of the most successful NFT projects on the Solana blockchain. The project has continued to solidify its place on the list of top 50 NFT projects of all time and has provided a collection similar to BAYC for enthusiasts to identify with.

DeGods is another Solana PFP success story. Second only to Okay Bears on Magic Eden, the collection has had its ups and downs but is revered as a global community of creators, developers, entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, experimenters, and innovators.

Genesis Genopets is one of the first-ever “move-to-earn” NFT games. Featuring a playable collection of 3,218 limited-edition NFTs, Genopets is the highest earning of any Magic Eden game.

The Remnants is a post-apocalyptic survivor game featuring 8,000 PFP-esque NFTs. As a play-to-earn game, The Remnants offers trading, crafting, and battling mechanics unique to the Solana blockchain.

Nyan Heroes is an NFT battle royale third-person shooter featuring cats and robots. Although the game itself is still under development, the project’s philanthropic mission to save one billion cats supercharged its path to success on Magic Eden.

Why we need Magic Eden

When NFTs first started to become popular, collectors often used OpenSea for everything. Whether for minting, collecting, trading, or auctioning NFTs, more often than not, the “world’s first and largest” NFT marketplace was the hub for it all.

But when OpenSea, sometimes called BrokenSea, would crash or otherwise go offline, there were only a few significant alternatives for most NFT endeavors. Users were forced to choose between Nifty Gateway, Rarible, MakersPlace, and a handful of other niche platforms. And the centrality of it all left NFT enthusiasts begging for more options.

In the absence of options, platforms like Magic Eden became a sight for sore eyes to those who had grown tired of jumping through hoops to trade NFTs. Yet, as the need for more NFT marketplaces has subsided, the desire for more usability and operability has grown.

A single-method approach to creating, buying, and selling NFTs does not exist, making top NFT marketplaces like Magic Eden — which focuses on a plethora of more features than simple transaction facilitation — invaluable for the long-term health of the NFT ecosystem. And this idea of longevity truly does seem to be front of mind for Yin and the rest of the Magic Eden team.

“If we are successful, and if the NFT ecosystem is successful in the future, one of the things that I really hope for us to be is not only a big voice and influence but also, I hope that our product can be a central focal point for a lot of really interesting content,” said Yin. “In crypto, there’s always a spirit of innovation, and there are quiet periods and growth spurts. So we’re prepared for whatever environment that comes.”

How To Stay Safe

That’s a massive list of application, but I strongly recommend check if there is any of those above listed apps on your device. The SpinOk is not here to play games. It’s one of worst malware discovered recently. It infiltrates into your Android phones through marketing SDKs (Software Development Kits) that even app developers might confuse as innocent.

The malware’s goal is often to gather personal data and files from unsuspecting users and transfer all that to remove servers for various shady purposes. For that reason, it’s STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to uninstall these apps from your phone as soon as possible.

Also, it’s better to conduct a good search through the web before installing any app on your device. It may be a little annoying at the start, but will keep you safe from future issues that comes from Malicious Android Apps. Be careful with apps that promise you money since they are one of the favorite spots for malware.

Nowadays, there are a lot of games with malware installed so do some research before installing less-known titles.

What You Need To Know Before You ‘Quit Your Job To Do Crypto Full

Blockchain technologies emerged onto the scene more than a decade ago. As a revolutionary moment in the world of business, finance, and so much more, the arrival of cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies heralded a revolution. Now, large institutions to bankers to executives across different fields have made the switch to this fast-paced, yet niche market.

Crypto, still a bubble or…?

Well, that’s what critics used to censure the industry. Even though, crypto fell into this bubble game- institutional giants/individuals want to play as well.

Recent history, in fact, has seen professionals leave lucrative employment opportunities to join this $2T valued industry. According to a LinkedIn report, jobs postings with titles containing terms like “Bitcoin,” “Ethereum,” “Blockchain” and “cryptocurrency” grew by 395 per cent in the U.S from 2023 to 2023.

In the seven days ending 16 July 2023, the share of crypto-related searches catapulted by 300% from the comparable period ending 1 September 2023. It’s a similar story for blockchain-related searches, which shot up by 137% over the same timeframe.

These postings varied from software and finance to other industries such as accounting and consulting, as well as the staffing and computer hardware sectors.

Neil Dundon, the founder of cryptocurrency-focused job agency Crypto Recruit, shared his position considering this immense demand for crypto-related jobs. The firm works with the largest projects in Layer 1 Blockchain to exchanges, Decentralised Finance (DeFi), NFT‘s, Blockchain Gaming and the metaverse.

Crypto Recruit specializes in placing quality talent into Blockchain and Crypto Projects globally. “We are the world’s first specialist in the industry,” Dundon claimed in a personal interview with AMBCrypto.

When asked about the current trend going forward in 2023, he added,

“Blockchain gaming and Metaverse projects, NFT’s and Defi are where the demand is. Huge amount of capital flowing into this space and therefore huge demand for all jobs – Engineers, Marketing, content, operations etc.”

But, why? Gaming, indeed, was the biggest segment of the entertainment industry, with nearly 3 billion regular participants. Sky Mavis, Axie Infinity’s developer, was the first to monetize NFTs in a gaming environment, but it won’t be the last. in fact, many investors have recognized the potential in crypto-gaming crossover.

As more brands leverage NFTs to build their communities in virtual worlds and as more consumers follow them in, technological and physical infrastructure moved into the foreground of the metaverse landscape. At the end of 2023, Intel had estimated that Web3 metaverse projects would eventually demand at least 1000x the computing power.

Beginner luck? No, definitely not. Might work once, but certainly not every single time.

Whether one has a finance background or not, intelligent investing is a crucial skill. Asset management and growth are fundamental to increasing wealth, and regardless of how much experience one may have, it’s never too late (or early) to start learning.

As cryptocurrency continues to solidify its role as the potential future of finance, here’s what one needs to know to get started as per the aforementioned executive.

Dundon asserted 3 points (in order) here,

c) Lastly, use a DEX – decentralised exchange, say Uniswap using Metamask.

He further added,

“If you do these 3 then you’ve given yourself a crash course in the subject matter. Landing a job then requires some research i.e where are your current skills most needed within Crypto”

Moving on, if one possesses the right skill, finding a job in the surging cryptocurrency field isn’t difficult. And, the plus side is that the salary bandwidth keeps increasing. Neil Dundon, in an interview with Yahoo Finance had stated,

“We have not recruited anything less than $100,000. But typically, even a year ago you might find some of these solidity developers would have been looking for $100,000. Right now, they are probably looking for $180,000 to $200,000.”

For instance, “If you want to make some money as a developer, learn how to code. We are talking anything from $150,000 to $250,000 for one of those developers at the moment.”

Forget stints on Wall Street.

— Bloomberg Quicktake (@Quicktake) February 5, 2023

Not just companies, but even countries have acknowledged the ongoing shift to the crypto-industry. Australia, then India are among those to recognise this exodus.

All good and no bad?

Regulation is among the most important factors affecting crypto-prices. The cryptocurrency’s rise has been arrested every time a government has cracked the policy whip, with countries taking varying approaches to Bitcoin regulation. For example, in November 2023, Bitcoin sank to a low when China accelerated a crackdown on cryptocurrency businesses, mirroring what happened when South Korea also made a move to regulate cryptocurrency trading back in 2023.

By their very nature, cryptocurrencies are freewheeling, not beholden to country borders or specific agencies within a government. But, this nature presents a problem to policymakers used to dealing with clear-cut definitions for assets.

Not just that, volatility or let’s say a dominant bear run could shift things or rather turn things south. In the 2023 bear market, several cryptocurrency companies laid off staff. Coinfloor, the exchange backed by TransferWise and UK’s oldest Bitcoin exchange  terminated the services of at least 40 employees to offset the losses. Blockchain startup Steemit also laid off close to 70 percent of its staff, citing the prolonged bear market.

“While we were building out our team over the last many months we have been relying on projections of basically a higher bottom for the market and since that’s no longer there, we’ve been forced to lay off more than 70 percent of our organization and begin a restructuring.”

Ergo, one needs to ask an important question before going skinny dipping into the crypto-pool. Are you ready to face the consequences? If yes, then surely enjoy the perks this space has to offer. However, keep in mind the cons as well.

Ten New Ipad Pro Details You’ll Want To Know Before Buying One

Just as predicted by my colleague Mark Gurman, the iPad Pro became available to purchase today, making a rare simultaneous appearance in Apple’s online and physical stores without any preorder period. Consequently, it’s actually possible to walk into an Apple Store today to buy one — and if my experience today is any indication, there probably won’t even be much of a line.

If you’re still unsure as to whether you want an iPad Pro, I’ve put together this quick guide to some of the real-world things people will want to know about the new 12.9″ iPad before making a purchase — including some comparison photos and other hands-on details. Enjoy the details and galleries below…

1. How Big Is Big? How much space are you really going to save carrying an iPad Pro instead of a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro? Not a lot, particularly if you’re also toting a keyboard around. Inside a keyboard case, the iPad Pro has a nearly identical footprint to the 13″ Retina MacBook Pro (above), and is noticeably bigger than the 11.6″ MacBook Air. (Check out the gallery below to see a shot of the iPad Pro in a keyboard case dwarfing the smaller Air.)

3. The Extra Speakers Actually Do Make A Difference. The iPad Pro has four speakers — two on “top,” two on “bottom” — and they’re much better than on any prior iPad. Believe it or not, the iPad Pro makes the 13″ Retina MacBook Pro’s speakers sound weak; they’re remarkably a step louder, noticeably clearer, and decidedly wider in frequency, better in both treble and bass. Apple’s promised stereo separation feature works seamlessly, too, properly switching the “left” and “right” channels over to the correct speakers as you rotate the iPad Pro around.

5. Most Of The Time, It Doesn’t Feel Materially Faster Than An iPad Air 2. Most apps, including Apple’s, feel like they’re running at the same speeds once you get them open, though the iPad Pro can and will load apps a little faster. As between the iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro, you’re more likely to notice Internet/wireless retrieval delays than CPU or GPU performance issues at this point. Oddly, Geekbench’s benchmarking tool shows a lot of variation between results. It consistently reported a gigantic jump in single-core scores from the iPad Air 2 (as wide as 1836 to 3146), but versus the iPad Air 2’s 4605 multi-core score, the Pro’s scores ranged from a barely better 4859 to a higher score of 5324. I’m guessing Geekbench needs an update, but there might be under-the-hood power management reasons for the benchmark differences.

8. Also, You Probably Should Stop Running Those Last Few Upscaled iPhone Apps Now. Sorry, Instagram users. iPhone app upscaling to the iPad was always a little iffy, but on the iPad Pro, it’s downright silly. 1X mode is tiny, and 2X mode no longer fills the screen, remaining closer to the size of an iPad Air screen with tons of black space on the Pro’s display.

10. Apple’s Smart Connector May Become A Game-Changer. For the first time in iPad history, the iPad Pro can actually connect to two wired accessories at once — one with Lightning, one with the Smart Connector. If this wasn’t obvious before due to the volume buttons’ placement, the Smart Connector now defines the “correct” way to use the iPad Pro in landscape mode: with the Home Button on the right side of the screen. It’s going to be really interesting to see how and whether most cases handle the new Connector, as no one knows yet whether it will be useful for things beyond (certain) keyboard docks. Since it was the first thing to show dirt on my Pro after it was unpacked, protection of some sort doesn’t seem like a bad idea, but accessing the port may wind up being challenging if it’s covered…

Here’s a quick gallery of additional iPad Pro images:

What Is Web3? What All You Need To Know About Web3 Technology?

What is web3? What do you need to know about web3 technology? Its features and layers

Web 3 or Web 3.0 has the potential to be disruptive and usher in a significant paradigm shift like Web 2.0 did. Web 3 is formed due to the fundamental ideas of decentralization, increased consumer usefulness, and openness. Web 3 technology plays the next step in the development of the internet.

Web 3 accurately translates and understands what you type through text, voice, or other media. The technology also understands what you say. In this article, we have discussed what is web3 and what all you need to know about web3 including its features of web3. Read to know about web3 technology.

What Is Web 3.0 Technology?

Web 3.0 or Web 3 is a third-generation world wide web built on top of blockchain developments and technologies in the Semantic Web. Web 3 is meant to be decentralized, and open to everyone which describes the web as a network of meaningfully linked data.

Key Features of Web3

Web3 has several distinguished features.

Decentralization: In web 2.0 computers search for the data that is kept at a fixed location mostly in a single server using HTTP in form of a web address. Information could be stored in multiple locations at the same time and become decentralized with Web 3.0 because it would be found based on its content rather than a single location. This would give people more power by destroying the massive databases that internet behemoths like Meta and Google currently maintain.

With the help of web 3, users will be able to sell their data through decentralized data networks, ensuring that they retain control of their ownership. This information will be generated by a wide range of powerful computing resources, including mobile phones, desktop computers, appliances, automobiles, and sensors.

Decentralization and open-source software-based Web 3.0 will also be trustless (i.e., participants will be able to interact directly without going through a trusted intermediary) and permissionless (each individual will be able to access without the permission of any governing body). This means that Web 3.0 applications, also known as dApps, will run on blockchains, decentralized peer-to-peer networks, or a hybrid of the two. DApps are decentralized apps.

Connectivity and ubiquity: With Web 3.0, content and information are more accessible across applications and an increasing number of commonplace internet-connected devices.

How Does Web 3 Work?

Your data is saved in web3 on your cryptocurrency notecase. On web3, you’ll interact with apps and communities via your wallet, and when you log out, your data will follow you. Because you own the data, you can theoretically decide whether to monetize it.

After we’ve established our guiding principles, we can look at how specific web3 development features are supposed to achieve these goals.

Data Ownership:

When you use a platform such as Facebook or YouTube, these companies collect, own, and recoup your data. Your information is saved in web3 on your cryptocurrency wallet. On web3, you’ll interact with apps and communities via your wallet, and when you log out, your data will follow you. Because you own the data, you can theoretically decide whether to monetize it.

Privacy, like data ownership, is a feature of your wallet. On web3, your wallet serves as your identification, making it difficult to link it to your actual identity. As a result, even if someone observes wallet activity, they will not be able to identify your wallet.

Some services of web 3 assist customers in connecting to cryptocurrency wallets used for illegal activity.

Although wallets improve the level of privacy for bitcoin transactions, privacy coins such as Zcash and Monero provide complete anonymity. Observers can track transactions on blockchains for privacy coins, but they cannot see the wallets involved.

9 Ways To Lock Down Your Iphone Or Android Device Before It Goes Missing

You know that icy stab of panic when you suddenly realize your Android phone or iPhone isn’t safe in your pocket where it should be?

Sure, features like “Find my iPhone” on iOS or the Android Device Manager can help. But if bad guys have snatched your phone or tablet, they can do a lot of damage before you zero in on its location.

Lock down your iPhone’s or Android phone’s security settings before it up and disappears. That way, if the worst happens, at least you’ll have the grim satisfaction of knowing that whoever swiped your device will have little more than a paperweight on their hands.

Read on for 9 easy ways to shore up your iOS or Android security, starting with a bonus tip…

Bonus: Lock your phone with a passcode, pronto

Here’s a tip that’s so obvious—well, to me, anyway—that I’m throwing it in as a bonus. Why mention it at all? Because I still run into far too many people who’ve never bothered to lock their phones or tablets with a PIN, even in an era of Touch IDs (for iOS) and traceable, easy-to-remember “pattern” locks (on the Android side).

Now, if your tablet never leaves your coffee table, that’s one thing. (Although… burglars!) But when it comes to your phone—and the emails, numbers, passwords, online banking apps, and other private data sitting in its memory—well, you’re nuts if you don’t have a lock-screen PIN.

And now, for the real tips…

1. Make sure Find my iPhone/iPad and Android Device Manager are up and running

Both Find My iPhone and Android Device Manager can pinpoint your missing devices, lock them remotely, set off their ringers, and even wipe all their data.

But neither of these apps will do you any good if they’re not enabled before your gadgets disappear (and yes, they’ll disappear, sooner or later).

And believe me, you don’t want your first time using Find my iPhone or Android Device Manager to be right after you’ve lost your phone or tablet.

For Android: Go to your browser of choice, make sure you’re signed into Google with the same login as you used to set up your phone or tablet, then visit the Android Device Manager page.

One of two things will happen: either your device’s location will pop up onscreen, or you’ll be prompted to send a notification to your phone or tablet. Tap the alert on your device to grant permission to Android Device Manager to track your handheld.

2. Set your device to require a passcode immediately (or almost immediately) after putting it to sleep [Android and iOS]

If you like, you can set your iPhone or Android phone to wake without a passcode after it’s recently been unlocked—say, within a few hours or just a few minutes.

Convenient, yes, but wise? Hmmm. For a tablet that usually sits at home, letting it wake without a passcode within an hour or so of being unlocked is probably OK.

For the phone in your pocket, though, five minutes or less without needing a passcode is a smart move. Personally, though, I don’t allow any of my iOS or Android phones to unlock without a passcode, ever.

Here’s how to see—and perhaps strengthen—your own “wake without passcode” settings.

3. Block access to Control Center [iOS]

Because you can access it from the lock screen, Control Center makes it easy to put your iPhone into “Do Not Disturb” mode without entering a passcode, or switch on “Airplane mode” before your flight takes off.

Unfortunately, Control Center also makes it easy for anyone to mess with your iPhone’s or iPad’s camera, alarm clock or wireless settings—even allowing, say, a thief to put your stolen iPhone into airplane mode, rendering the Find My iPhone app useless.

4. Use a stronger PIN, or a straight-up password [Android and iOS]

There’s nothing stopping you from upping the security ante with a longer PIN, or even a full-on password.

On an Android phone, you can create numeric PINs or alphanumeric passwords up to 16 characters in length, more than enough to stump casual crooks (assuming, of course, you don’t pick a password like “password123456789”).

Meanwhile, I tried creating a 50-character password on my iPhone, and iOS didn’t stop me. Whether you really want a 50-character password is up to you, but the option is there for the taking.

Here’s what you do…

5. Encrypt your data [Android]

Good news for recent buyers of new Android phones or tablets with Lollipop (the latest version of Android) pre-installed: The data on your device is already encrypted, rendering it well-nigh indecipherable until it’s unlocked with your passcode.

Older Android phones and tablets, however—including those that have been updated to Lollipop—don’t have encryption turned on by default. Switching it on is a simple matter of a few taps, but it could take anywhere from half an hour (in my case) to several hours before all your data is fully encrypted, and you won’t be able to use your phone or tablet during that time. You’ll need to keep your phone plugged into its charger during the entire process.

Careful, though: Google warns that you could lose “some or all” of your data if you abort the encryption process midway through. And if you want to go back and turn off data encryption, you’ll have to wipe your phone completely to do so.

6. Turn on Activation Lock [iOS]

Of course, plenty of phone thieves couldn’t care less about your personal data. All they want to do is wipe and sell your precious handset.

A new iOS 8 feature called Activation Lock, however, will prevent anyone without the proper passcode from reactivating a lost iOS device, essentially turning it into an impeccably designed paperweight.

If your phone or tablet somehow manages to go missing, you can always use the handy Android Device Manager to lock your device and flash a “rescue” message on the lock screen. With any luck, a Good Samaritan will find your handset and get it back to you.

It’s a smart idea, but what if your lost Android phone or tablet is in Airplane mode or otherwise out of wireless range? If that happens, sending a rescue message with your name and number won’t do much good.

Instead, try this: Add a message to your device’s lock screen now, before it gets lost—a message with your name, a phone number (not the number of your missing mobile, of course), an email address, or another reliable means of reaching you.

8. Set your iPhone/iPad to send a “ping” to Apple just before its battery dies [iOS]

As the fine print below the setting points out, your handheld will send out a final ping—complete with location data—to Apple’s servers, so at least you’ll know where your iPhone or iPad was before it died.

9. Hide notifications from the lock screen [Android “Lollipop” and iOS]

Lock-screen notifications make for an easy way to check your e-mail, text messages, calendar events, and other mobile goings-on without having to unlock your iPhone or Android phone.

Unfortunately, they also make it easy for perfect strangers to read your messages and otherwise take a peek at your digital life.

If you don’t want just anyone—and particularly smartphone thieves—combing through your notifications, you might want to preemptively hide them from your lock screen.
