Without further ado, let’s just jump right in!

1. Clean your mouse and connect it to a different port

Sometimes a bit of dust can cause this problem to appear, and if that happens, open your mouse and clean it with pressurized air.

If the problem persists, you might want to try connecting your mouse to a different USB port.

If that doesn’t work, you might want to swap your left and right mouse button and check if the issue reappears. To do that, follow the steps above.

Check if the problem still appears. If not, your left switch may be worn out.

If your mouse is connected to a USB 3.0 and doesn’t work correctly, maybe there’s a problem with the port. Check out this step-by-step guide to fix issues with the USB 3.0 port.

3. Check for remote control software 4. Disable the touchpad

This is a minor issue, but it cannot be enjoyable, and to fix it, it’s recommended to turn off your touchpad. There are several ways to do that, but you can usually do it quickly right from the Settings app by following the steps above. After that, your touchpad should be disabled as soon as you connect a mouse.

Another way to disable your touchpad is to use its software. Touchpad software comes with all sorts of features, and it also allows you to disable your touchpad when the mouse is connected, so you might want to check it out.

Lastly, you might be able to disable your touchpad quickly simply by using a keyboard shortcut. On most laptops, this shortcut is Fn + F9, but it might be different on your device.

Simply look for a key with a touchpad icon and press that key while holding the Fn key.

Check your laptop manual for detailed instructions if you can’t find the keyboard shortcut. Once you disable your touchpad, the issue with your mouse should be resolved.

If you need more info on disabling the touchpad when a mouse is connected to your laptop, read our dedicated article for further details.

5. Consider purchasing a new mouse

As previously mentioned, your mouse switches can wear out over time, and if that’s the case, it might be a good time to consider purchasing a new mouse.

If your hardware causes this problem, purchasing a new mouse is the simplest way. We already covered the best mice for Windows, so check our list.

Expert tip:

To fix this problem, we recommend you disable this feature by doing the previous steps.

7. Disable the touchscreen

Once you disable your touchscreen, the problems with your mouse should be resolved. This is a workaround, but it works according to users, so feel free to try it out.

Need additional info on how to disable the touchscreen in Windows 10? Check out this expert guide to find out more.

8. Check the switches on your mouse

We’re not responsible for any damage that can occur as a result of this solution. Instead, according to users, they managed to fix the problem simply by adding a bit of oil to their mouse switches.

To do that, first, you need to disconnect and open your mouse. Then locate the mouse switches. Now gently add a drop of oil to the switch and keep pressing the mouse switch until all the oil is inside the switch.

Make sure that any excess oil is removed from your mouse. And if you get oil outside the switches, remove it, or you might damage your mouse.

Once the switch is oiled up, combine your mouse and connect it to your PC.

Can hackers move your mouse?

Yes, it is possible for hackers to move your mouse. This will mean that they have gotten control of your device using a remote control tool like the popular remote desktop for instance.

You should try disconnecting from the network and shutting down your computer.

However, once you are confident that the mouse is bad, we recommend you change it instantly, as repairs may be hard to effect, and you may need a technician in such cases.

Why does my mouse keep selecting everything?

Users of Windows may drag and highlight items inside the interface without needing to keep the mouse button down. Therefore, your mouse may begin to highlight without your instruction if this function is activated in your system without your knowledge.

If this is not the case, then it could be a sign of wear and tear on your mouse, and you will have to change the unit.

That’s about it. After following all the steps mentioned above, your mouse should work as intended.

This Squishy Little Robot Can Lift 1,000 Times Its Own Weight

There are plenty of good reasons to make your robot a squishy one. So-called soft robots are perfectly suited for squeezing into the tight spaces one might expect in a search-and-rescue scenario after a disaster. They’re also more impervious to damage than traditional bots made of hard materials, which are liable to shatter under too much force. And perhaps most importantly, they’re ideal for interacting with humans. A robot made only of yielding, soft material won’t accidentally puncture your heart muscle during surgery, nor will it cut you open as it scrambles to find you in a pile of rubble.

But there’s at least one good reason to make a robot out of harder stuff. It’s much more difficult to create a mechanoid with a strong grip if you’re using soft materials. Just imagine trying to pick something up without a single bone in your hand. First of all, ew? Second of all, you’d have a tough time of it.

Still, one does not need bones in order to grab things. Consider invertebrates like the noble octopus: this creature’s eight legs have nary a bone in sight, but they can manipulate their muscles in such a way as to move them without skeletal support. Even in animals that do have skeletons, some structures do without. Take tongues, for example, or elephant trunks. So engineers know that the proper workaround must exist.

A study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences presents a potential solution. By creating a flexible “skeleton” (don’t worry, it’s still relatively squishable) inspired by origami, researchers were able to make robots that can lift 1,000 times their own weight. They didn’t have to sacrifice the benefits of soft robots, either. While a 2.6-gram muscle could lift a 3-kilogram object, it could also grasp a flower without crushing the delicate blossom.

The inner skeleton can actually be made from a variety of cheap materials. The engineers folded up pieces of soft silicone rubber, for instance, as well as sheets of clear polyester. They even conducted successful tests with water-soluble materials, which could be used to make medical or environmental robots capable of dissolving in-situ when finished with their work. In a robot where total squishiness is not of the utmost concern, metal coils could provide extra strength, or the skeleton could be made of electronic boards to allow for screens or color changes. Depending on the material, the researchers note, any manner of fabrication technique—3D printing, machining, casting, forming, and even manual folding—might be used.

A snake-like robotic arm with a flower-like gripper. Shuguang Li

The skeleton goes into a bag filled with air or fluid (like the skeleton, the skin can be made of all sorts of materials), creating a single muscle. Then, vacuum suction causes the outer skin to collapse or expand, prompting the inner skeleton to unfurl or contract based on its “programming,” or the way engineers folded it. A simple accordion fold enables up and down movements, but other patterns could prompt the muscles to curl up when squeezed, or to twist into a circular gripping mechanism. The team calls the resulting structure a fluid-driven origami-inspired artificial muscle (FOAM).

“One of the key aspects of these muscles is that they’re programmable, in the sense that designing how the skeleton folds defines how the whole structure moves. You essentially get that motion for free, without the need for a control system,” first author Shuguang Li, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Wyss Institute and MIT CSAIL, said in a statement. That simple, physical programming cuts down on how smart a robot’s brain needs to be by dictating various movements based on air flow alone.

“The possibilities really are limitless,” Daniela Rus, the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT and one of the senior authors of the paper, said in a statement. “But the very next thing I would like to build with these muscles is an elephant robot with a trunk that can manipulate the world in ways that are as flexible and powerful as you see in real elephants.”

Iphone Turning Itself Off And Won’t Turn Back On? Try These 8 Fixes

Does your iPhone switch off randomly even if it has sufficient battery left, and then refuse to turn back on? Follow along as we share why this happens and how to fix an iPhone that keeps shutting down on its own.

Why does your iPhone shut down randomly?

Your iPhone will shut down randomly due to high temperature, software bugs, app crashes, water damage, or glitches picked up during regular use. Secondly, your old iPhone can also keep turning off due to poor battery health. You can check the battery health of your iPhone and understand more here.

Backstory

During an episode of our podcast, I mentioned that I had overslept that morning due to my iPhone 11 Pro turning itself off overnight. It was positioned perfectly on a wireless charger, with plenty of battery left from the day before, and it had no water damage or any other notable hardware concerns. It simply turned itself off and wouldn’t turn back on.

As it turns out, this is just one of those things that sometimes happens to iPhone models X and newer. Luckily, after some stringent Googling, I could work out an easy fix for it. So I thought it would be helpful if I shared that fix (and some more) in case you’re ever unlucky enough to come across this weird bug.

How to fix an iPhone that won’t turn back on

Force restart your iPhone

Once you’ve confirmed your iPhone has at least some battery, and it won’t turn on with a simple press of the power button, go ahead and perform a force restart. We have a dedicated tutorial for all devices. If you have iPhone 8, X, or later, we have recapped the steps below:

Press the volume up button and release it quickly. This is more of a tap than a press-and-hold.

Do the same thing with the volume down button. Again, it’s just a quick press.

Press and hold the Power/Sleep button, and this time keep holding until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

The steps should be done rather quickly: press volume up, press volume down, and then press & hold the Power button. If you hold on to one of the volume buttons too long or don’t hold the power button long enough, it may not work.

Plug your iPhone into charging

If a force restart isn’t able to switch on your iPhone, plug it into charging for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Once the battery is adequately juiced up, try to switch on your iPhone normally or force restart it again.

Let the iPhone cool down

iPhone can heat up significantly if left on a wireless charger or a sunny day with maximum brightness, GPS, and many running apps. Once the internal temperature gets high enough, your iPhone becomes almost unusable or shuts down. You can turn it back on after it has cooled down.

Reset all iPhone settings

If your iPhone keeps turning off, reset all settings, and this should hopefully fix the problem.

Check for water damage

Your iPhone has a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) that is normally white or silver. But when it comes in contact with water, it turns red. Here’s how to determine if your iPhone is water damaged or not:

Set your device in bright light, and also make sure you have a flashlight handy.

Take out the SIM card tray and look inside.

If the LCI is red, water has gone inside your device, due to which it is performing inconsistently and turning off randomly or refusing to power on. Take it to an Apple Store to fix the problem.

Try DFU mode or full erase and set up

Once you have followed everything and the problem continues, put your iPhone in DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) and erase it. This will remove everything from your device and fix the software issues causing your iPhone to turn off and refuse to turn on. Before proceeding, make sure your back up your iPhone to iCloud or computer.

Related: How to erase everything on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Note: If you can’t use DFU mode due to lack of technical skills or fast internet, take it to an Apple Store, and they should assist.

Finally, if nothing helps, book an appointment at your nearest Apple Store or Apple-authorized store and get your device inspected. They will inspect the iPhone and tell you the exact hardware problem related to the internals or the battery.

Iphone Home Button Not Working? 8 Fixes To Try

While newer iPhones no longer have a physical Home button, many older models still have this beloved feature. That is, until that button stops behaving as it should.

If you’re otherwise working iPhone suddenly has a problem with its physical Home button, you’ll want to fix iPhone Home Button problems with these troubleshooting tips.

Table of Contents

The iPhone models with a physical Home button include the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone SE (2023), and earlier models. These iPhones use a physical Home button for navigation and accessing features such as the Home screen, Siri, and the App Switcher. Later models, such as the iPhone X and newer, do not have a physical Home button and use gestures and facial recognition for navigation and accessing features, much like most modern Android phones.

1. It’s a Software Problem

If the apps or even iOS malfunctions, it may cause the Home button to stop working. To fix this problem, try restarting the iPhone, resetting the software, or restoring the iPhone to its factory settings. After turning the phone off and starting it up again, many software glitches disappear after the Apple Logo appears.

2. Restore Your iPhone Using Finder, or iTunes

One possible way to fix this issue is by restoring your phone from an iCloud or local backup using iTunes on a Windows PC or Finder on a Mac. Also, you can recover your phone firmware using DFU mode if something goes wrong.

3. Your Home Button Needs Recalibration

While this is rarely an issue, your Home Button may need calibration to respond normally. To calibrate the physical Home button on an iPhone, follow these steps:

Open any Apple stock app, such as

Calendar

.

Press the

Power button

until you see the “

Slide to power off” prompt

.

Instead of turning off the phone, hold the

Home button

until the screen flashes, and you’re taken back to the Home screen.

Test if the Home button works.

Once the calibration is complete, you can use the Home button to access the iPhone’s Home screen, Siri, and other features.

4. Your Home Button Is Dirty

If the Home button is dirty or covered in debris, it may not function properly. To fix this problem, clean the Home button with a soft, dry cloth or use compressed air to remove debris. Do not use chemical cleaning agents such as isopropyl alcohol to attempt cleaning.

5. Home Button Misalignment

The gasket between the Home button and iPhone might be torn or worn and need replacement. Unfortunately, this involves a complicated disassembly, so a trained technician with the right tools should only attempt it. It may also be due to a warped mounting bracket or missing or broken screws for the mounting bracket. In all cases here, a technician must inspect the phone on the inside to confirm if this hardware issue is the real problem.

6. Wear and Tear Caused by Age

One of the reasons Apple moved away from a physical Home button in the first place is that moving parts eventually break down through use, causing various Home button issues. The Home button sees far more action than the side button or volume buttons, so it made sense to go virtual.

If the Home button is not functioning due to age or wear, it may need to be repaired or replaced by a qualified technician.

7. Using the Charger Trick

If the Home button on an iPhone is not functioning correctly, pressing the charger cable may temporarily fix the problem. To fix the Home button by pressing on the charger cable, follow these steps:

Connect the iPhone to a charger using a Lightning to USB cable.

Gently press on the back of the plug in area where the charging cable connector meets the iPhone near the bottom of the device.

Press and hold the

Home button

for a few seconds to see if it responds.

If the Home button starts working, continue to hold the charging cable in place and use the Home button as usual.

This method may temporarily fix the Home button by applying pressure to the area where the charging cable connects to the iPhone. This may improve the electrical connection and allow the Home button to function properly. However, this is a temporary solution, and the Home button may stop working again.

8. Your Home Button Is Physically Damaged

If the Home button is damaged, it may not function properly. To fix this problem, the Home button may need to be repaired or replaced by a qualified technician. If none of the fixes you’ve attempted above resolve the issue, this is the last thing you can do.

Is It Worth Replacing the Home Button?

The iPhone will need to be disassembled to replace the Home button by removing and replacing it with a new one. This complex repair should only be performed by a qualified technician, as it involves disassembling the iPhone and handling delicate internal components.

Depending on the exact price you’re quoted and the age of your iPhone, it may make more sense to buy a new iPhone instead. You may even be able to trade your old iPhone for a significant discount on the price of a new phone.

Suppose your iPhone is still under its Applecare or Applecare + warranty. Take it to the Genius Bar since this issue should be covered when the problem isn’t abuse or accidental damage. Your insurance company may be willing to pay for the repair if it results from accidental damage.

If you decide to have the button replaced by a third-party technician rather than the Apple Store, the Touch ID will no longer work. The Touch ID sensor in the button is paired with the mainboard in your phone for security reasons, so replacing the button breaks that pairing. This also means that if you get a third-party screen replacement, Touch ID won’t work if you use the button that comes with the new iPhone screen. Only Apple can offer a replacement with Touch ID functionality left intact. If the button itself was fine and merely had to be aligned or repaired, you’ll keep Touch ID functionality.

How to Access the Virtual Home Button

If the Home button is not working, you can access the virtual Home button by following these steps:

Open the

Settings app

on the

iPhone

.

Select

Accessibility

.

Scroll down and select

Touch

to open the AssistiveTouch settings.

Select

AssistiveTouch

.

Turn on the

Assistive Touch toggle switch

to enable AssistiveTouch.

A small AssistiveTouch button will appear on the screen, which you can use to access the virtual on-screen Home button and other features. It looks like a small circle on-screen in the same position as the pictured “X.”

To access the virtual Home button, select the

Assistive Touch button

, then the

Home

button. This will simulate the physical Home button and take you back to the Home screen.

Select the

Assistive Touch button

, then tap on the “Siri” button. This will activate Siri and allow you to use your voice to give commands and ask questions.

To access the Control Center, select the

Assistive Touch button

, then the

Control Centre button

. This will open the virtual Control Center, which allows you to access settings and controls for the iPhone.

To access the Notification Center, select the

Assistive Touch button

and then the

Notification Center button

. This will open the Notification Center, which shows notifications and alerts from apps and services on the iPhone.

This workaround will let you use your phone until you can repair it.

Has Your Phone Been Repaired Before?

Have you repaired your phone before? It seems that in some cases, small mistakes such as loose or missing screws, an over-tightened anchor screw, or damage to logic board components cause the malfunction.

If your iPhone’s Home button stopped working after a repair shop worked on it to fix something else, consider taking it back and having them repair the issue under the workmanship warranty with the previous repair.
