A long time ago, when MTV was actually relevant for music, there was a deligthful video called ‘video killed the radio star’ playing almost constantly; as catchy as it was prophetic. Just as Charlie Chaplin was exposed by ‘talkies’, so were radio ‘stars’ who couldn’t duplicate their musical efforts on the exciting new visual format that was MTV. With Periscope, Twitter is morphing their own platform into something more, something different, something refreshing. Twitter now bridges a gap between immediate and contextual, live and lived-in. It also makes the global technology gap more apparent.

Part of what makes Twitter special is its ability to provide real-time info in quick bursts. Log in, and you get access to the world at-large, and are subject to a flood of opinion and news in 140 characters or less.

Twitter, as-is (or was, I guess) found favor with journalists and wannabe-comedians all the same; those who would rather say something quick and snappy than pen a dictum on a subject. Those who wanted to direct attention to themselves. Users who had something good to say, even if it wasn’t a lot.

Twitter is neat. It’s possibly perfect. It is (or was, I guess) also losing relevancy.

After an IPO, Twitter was made to share their user numbers in earnings calls. What we found was reality, and that Twitter — as expansive as it was — maybe wasn’t as large and in charge as we thought. More to the point, visuals seemed to be taking over. When compared to Instagram, Twitter may not be the most-used micro-social platform around.

Pictures were squashing the written word. Twitter’s small footprint, both in how many of those words we could smash out on the keyboard and when considering user numbers, were making the service an also-ran in many ways. We’d post Instagram photos to Twitter, but that was more to the benefit of Instagram.

Twitter was being leveraged. Still is.

Live video was the latest gut-punch, with many sharing links to Meerkat videos on Twitter. Twitter was turning into the fulcrum for social; a platform used to relay us elsewhere.

Periscope, though — Periscope brings everything back into focus for Twitter. Today, a tragedy in New York is being cast on Periscope, and shared widely via Twitter. The difference here is that Periscope is, as of a very recent acquisition, a Twitter property.

Twitter is now the video star. Twitter is leveraging itself.

Periscope was made for Twitter. Not literally, but the immediacy of live video and the easy access to Twitter make the tandem absolutely devastating for the competition. Forget Snapchat’s partnerships. Forget Facebook’s Techwire. When it comes to right now — and knowing what’s going on in the moment — Twitter and Periscope matter.

The downside to Periscope (other than being iOS-only and only available in the US for now, which will change) is that it isn’t handy for those on weak connections. Would protesters in countries with poor cellular connectivity be able to use it at this time? Likely not — and not even if they had the option to. Periscope highlights a digital divide the likes of Facebook and Google are working to rectify in their way.

But we’ll always have Twitter proper for those times, and blasting a quick tweet is still as breezy and effective as ever. Written words are also still the foundation of Twitter, even with Periscope anchoring its video efforts. In relaying his experience in New York today, Fusion’s Tim Pool routinely asked users to tweet to him with questions they may have.

Consider that for just a second. Not only are you getting real-time, live, contextual info — you’re able to interact. You’re able to help. We could wave goodbye to the days of Redditors trying to solve crime and welcome a new era of real-time, crowd-sourced info gathering.

That was always an aim of Twitter, too. With Periscope, the two services make those results easier, faster, and potentially much more effective.

Though it might be more functional and necessary in places Periscope just does not reach yet, the promise of Periscope and Twitter is massive. Just like Twitter was all those years ago at SXSW when it was “just” SMS-ing the world.

Google’S Quantum Computer Supposedly Just Made A Time Crystal

Google’s quantum computer supposedly just made a time crystal

Google’s quantum computer has been used to build a “time crystal” according to freshly-published research, a new phase of matter that upends the traditional laws of thermodynamics. Despite what the name might suggest, however, the new breakthrough won’t let Google build a time machine.

Time crystals were first proposed in 2012, as systems that continuously operate out of equilibrium. Unlike other phases of matter, which are in thermal equilibrium, time crystals are stable yet the atoms which make them up are constantly evolving.

At least, that’s been the theory: scientists have disagreed on whether such a thing was actually possible in reality. Different levels of time crystals that could or could not be generated have been argued, with demonstrations of some that partly – but not completely – meet all the relevant criteria. In a new research preprint by researchers at Google, along with physicists at Princeton, Stanford, and other universities, it’s claimed that Google’s quantum computer project has delivered what many believed impossible. Preprints are versions of academic papers that are published prior to going through peer-review and full publishing; as such, their findings can be challenged or even overturned completely during that review process.

“Our work employs a time-reversal protocol that discriminates external decoherence from intrinsic thermalization, and leverages quantum typicality to circumvent the exponential cost of densely sampling the eigenspectrum,” the paper suggests. “In addition, we locate the phase transition out of the DTC with an experimental finite-size analysis. These results establish a scalable approach to study non-equilibrium phases of matter on current quantum processors.”

If that has gone right over your head, you’re probably not alone. As Quanta Magazine explains it, the time crystal basically consists of three core elements. First, a row of particles each with its own magnetic orientation gets locked into a mixture of low- and higher-energy configurations. That’s what’s known as a “many-body localization.”

Flipping all of the orientations of those particles – effectively creating a mirror version – is known as eigenstate order. It’s effectively a secondary many-body localized state.

Finally, there’s the application of laser light. That causes the states to cycle – from normal to mirrored, and then back again – but without actually using net energy from the laser itself. The result is known as a Floquet time crystal, first proposed in 2024.

Google’s quantum computer – known as Sycamore – was able to use a chip with 20 of its qubits, or controllable quantum particles, each of which can maintain two states simultaneously. By tuning the interaction strength between the individual quibits, the researchers could randomize the interactions and achieve many-body localization. Microwaves then upended the particles into their mirror orientation, but without the spin change taking net energy from that laser itself.

Where exactly that leaves both the theoretical research and the possible applications of a time crystal remains unclear. Right now, the main implication according to the researchers is that there’s “a scalable approach to study non-equilibrium phases of matter on current quantum processors”; in short, it demonstrates that quantum computers could at least be good for this line of work.

Figuring out a practical application for quantum computers and the reams of theory that come with them has been a common issue for companies digging into the technology. Earlier this year, Google made some bold predictions about just what its quantum project could achieve, pointing to improving batteries, making more effective drugs and vaccines, and generating more effective fertilizers as possible outcomes from such research. As part of that, the company says it is working on a 1,000,000 physical qubit quantum computer, though conceded it would take years before even understanding how that might be constructed could be figured out.

That’s already bad, but then things got worse when customers who received this email started receiving the replies from others – complete with sensitive personal information.

Essential Products Customer Care

Some users in the Reddit thread are claiming that this could be a phishing scam, but one Reddit user by the name of RonnieSchnell says that it isn’t. Instead, he says, this whole mishap can be blamed on a miscommunication. The emails were indeed going back to Essential, but the problem is that they went to other customers as well, exposing all of this sensitive data:

It is not a Phishing scam. It is a misconfiguration. The DKIDs check-out, and the replies are actually going to Essential (and then many other people). I’ve accumulated quite a collection of D/Ls, Passports, credit card statements, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. This is unbelievable.

RonnieSchnell goes onto to say that it looks like these messages used Google Groups behind the scenes, with Essential authorizing Google Suites to send them out to customers. Should his analysis of the situation be correct, it sounds like this is a colossal screw up on the part of Essential.

For its part, Essential hasn’t really said much about this issue. On Twitter, the only thing to be found in reference to this is the most recent tweet on Essential’s account. That tweet offers little in the way of information, with Essential merely saying that it is aware of the situation and taking steps to mitigate it. We’re left with the promise that it will update us when it has more information, but at the time of this writing, that information hasn’t come.

If this was indeed a mistake on the part of Essential, then that’s a bad look at a crucial time for the company. With its flagship phone now starting to ship out, it’s a make-or-break time for Essential and consumer goodwill is of utmost importance. We’ll update you when Essential makes a statement and sheds some light on how this could have happened, so stay tuned.

An Independent Artist Just Made $20,000 In One Day Selling Nfts

Apple Maps And Siri Woes Again Make Headlines

Just when you thought the dust has settled over Apple’s digital personal assistant, Siri, and the company’s Google Maps replacement software in iOS, latest reports once again pan the two services over gross inaccuracies.

Worse, these stories paint Apple Maps and Siri in a not-so-favorable light – and very publicly, too.

The first report comes from Alaska and warns about people looking for directions to the Fairbanks International Airport, only to be instructed to drive onto an airport taxiway, which is located directly across the runway where airplanes take off and land….

According to AlaskaDispatch:

Twice in the past three weeks drivers from outside Fairbanks who relied on the iPhones built-in map app to get to the airport have driven onto Taxiway Bravo and proceeded to drive across the main runway. No one has been injured and Apple promises a fix by Wednesday.

The airport’s chief of operations, Melissa Osborn, warned Apple Maps instructed people to drive straight onto the airport taxiway. “These folks drove past several signs,” she said. “They even drove past a gate. None of that cued them that they did something inappropriate”.

Just out of curiosity, how come these folks did not notice they were being directed to the taxiway? I mean, it’s obviously not something one’d easily fail to grasp.

After airport personnel, police and the TSA converged on the driver of a rental car during the Sept. 6 daylight runway crossing, the airport staff complained through the attorney general’s office to Apple.

The airport has since closed the aircraft access route to Taxiway Bravo from the Float Pond Road. Even though Apple did promise a prompt fix by Wednesday, it was nowhere to be seen at press time, as per reports form the Apple legal department to the attorney general’s office and Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

I’m not sure why exactly it’s taking Apple that long to respond.

At the very least, Apple should have temporarily disabled those specific directions until the Maps team is able to correct such a downright dangerous error. If anything, Apple’s numerous job posts for Ground Truth specialists indicates the company’s willingness to put more experts on the Maps team to deal with these inaccuracies.

Keep in mind that Apple partners with dozes of local data providers so correcting a specific error involves paperwork and is not a simple matter of flipping a few switches.

Meanwhile, Siri continues to experience issues of its own.

Conan O’Brien had actress Jane Lynch on his show yesterday night, who didn’t mince words describing her first world problem with Siri. Specifically, she said Siri told her “I have no listing for Let Pam Cookie Ian” when asked for directions to Le Pain Quotidien.

Lynch and O’Brien then did some live Siri tests that didn’t go down well.

We’ve all been there and it’s no secret Siri isn’t perfect.

But when your personal digital assistant gets ridiculed on mainstream late-night shows whose audiences count tens of millions of people, bad press is unavoidable.

In Siri’s defense, O’Brien didn’t do her justice by allowing Lynch to converse with Siri using his own phone. As you know, Siri adapts herself to the user’s unique voice signature and pronunciation, getting better over time.

Siri understands its owner best so voices new to her tend to yield poorer results. Regardless, Apple should be credit for improving Siri in iOS 7 in a number of ways.

For instance, she can now search the web, images and Wikipedia inline, has higher-quality male and female voices, can change your phone and app’s settings and responds faster, thanks to backend improvements.

Also helping Siri is Apple’s use of Multipath TCP networking in iOS 7 which helps the digital assistant automatically switch between Wi-Fi or cellular connection on the fly, depending on network conditions.
