They typically buy a new phone, use it for a short period of time, then immediately sell it – sometimes at a profit, sometimes at a loss – so they can get the necessary funds to finance the next big thing.


This type of consumer will buy a new phone, but doesn’t feel any particular need or rush to do so. It may be before their contract ends, it may be after their contract ends, or it may be if/when their phone breaks.

Contract Careful

This type of consumer will only purchase a new device when their current contract ends, be it to save on fees, or to get the most out of their purchase.


This category deals with where a customer purchases their device: locally or elsewhere.

SIM-Free Supporter

This type of spender will only purchase SIM-free (factory unlocked) devices. It may be a result of faster updates, no carrier bloat, hatred of carrier logos, faster availability, no local availability, or a combination of these or other factors.

Import Master

This type of consumer will frequently import devices to their country instead of purchasing directly. This may be as a result of wanting a SIM-free device, it may be a result of carrier-related issues, or it may be a result of availability issues. For these individuals, the accompanying tariffs associated with importation are irrelevant to their needs.

Carrier or Country Bound

This type of customer will only purchase devices that are officially released in their country, and/or sold directly through a carrier.

Psychological Behavior

This category refers more to the psychological conditions of the consumer’s habits.

Fundamental Follower

This type of consumer bases their purchasing decisions on the recommendations of others or on what is popular around them. They don’t necessarily care about brands or specs so much as having that which will allow them to better fit in.


This type of consumer wants exactly the opposite of what those around them may have. This might entail purchasing a device like the LG Vu or Galaxy Note Edge, or else a brand that is decidedly unpopular and unlikely to be seen around town.


This type of consumer will purchase a device, regardless of its specs or price tag, and stick with it for as long as possible. They may be interested in new phones, but are fine with what they have until theirs either breaks or else becomes unusable due to spec-related issues.

The Purist

This type of consumer will only purchase a device from the OEM’s home country of origin, either as a result of superior product accessories included in the box, or else a feeling that they must own the most “authentic” variant possible to truly have the “real” phone. Examples include Samsung Korean variants or HTCTaiwanese variants.

The Fanatical Fan

This type of consumer will buy literally any  device a company makes, or at least most of them barring a certain spec requirement. While they may enjoy the latest and greatest, they are equally interested – if not more so – in testing out all the offerings of their favorite OEM just to compare and contrast.

The Skin Trade

This category deals with the Android skin situation.

Flavor Free

This type of customer will only purchase Nexus devices as they do not want any skins or modifications whatsoever.

A Total Tinkerer

This type of consumer wants a phone that can easily be modded. They love to install custom ROMs and tinker with all kinds of settings.

OEM Please

This type of consumer doesn’t care about the skin, rather they just use whatever the OEM in question has put on their device.

Financing Options

This category deals with how the customer finances their purchase.


This type of customer buys and sells phones constantly in order to finance their next purchase. This may come at a net gain, a wash, or net loss as a result, however in all cases a new device will be procured after sale.

Saving Spender

Superfluous Spender:

This type of consumer saves every device he or she has ever purchased. Perhaps as a memento, perhaps because of data on the device, perhaps to use as a spare; the device is never discarded.

Could Care Less

This type of customer has no personal “connection” with the device, even if they may love the design or have had it through important moments in their life. It’s ultimately just a piece of tech and thus when the time comes, it’s either sold or tossed.

The steps above should help you to hide or stop the running search bar process—but only temporarily. If you want to stop chúng tôi or chúng tôi from running, you’ll need to use the Windows PowerShell to take ownership of and then rename the executable file to stop it running.

With the chúng tôi (or chúng tôi process stopped and renamed, the search bar will no longer function. You’ll need to follow the steps above to enter the correct folder, then type mv chúng tôi chúng tôi or mv chúng tôi chúng tôi depending on your version of Windows.

Running these commands will stop Windows from opening the search bar process—in effect, disabling it completely. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible (at present) to remove the app using Windows PowerShell or other tools, so this remains the best method for stopping it from working on your PC.

If you prefer to use the Windows search bar to search your PC or the web, you’ll need to leave the chúng tôi process running on your PC. If you’d prefer to limit the amount of data Microsoft records on you, however, it may be best to disable it fully using the methods listed above.

Optical zoom in the context of a smartphone sees telephoto or so-called periscope cameras being used for zoomed-in shots. These cameras only offer one level of optical zoom though (e.g. 2x, 5x) rather than DSLR cameras, which are capable of moving lenses to offer several optical zoom levels. Telephoto and periscope cameras should deliver the best results out of all zoom technologies.

Digital zoom is just like cropping the camera sensor to give the impression that you’ve zoomed in. Phone cameras will often use digital up-scaling to produce an output file size that’s equivalent to the 1x resolution (e.g. upscaling to 8MP if the camera is an 8MP sensor). However, the actual level of detail retained is equivalent to cropping in on the original 1x image.

Think of digital zoom like staring at a friend 100 meters away while looking through a toilet roll. Optical zoom on a smartphone is the equivalent of using a pair of binoculars (i.e. telephoto or periscope cameras) to look at that same friend, offering a more detailed look at them.

When optical zoom isn’t quite optical

We’ve seen Xiaomi and OnePlus blur the lines between optical and hybrid zoom with the Mi Note 10 and OnePlus 7 Pro respectively.

Xiaomi’s Mi Note 10 specifically touts “5x optical” zoom branding on the rear (see the picture above), when it later admitted it’s actually using a 3.7x 8MP camera and cropping in to deliver a 5MP 5x hybrid zoom shot. The OnePlus 7 Pro meanwhile, delivers an 8MP 3x zoom shot from a 13MP 2.2x telephoto camera.

In OnePlus’s case in particular, the firm was adamant about it being telephoto zoom and not lossless or hybrid zoom. This practice might not matter to the vast majority of users and picture quality might be great, but it does have the potential to be an extremely slippery slope. What’s to stop a company from offering a 40MP camera, cropping it down to 5MP, saying it’s 5MP optical zoom, and only admitting the practice when asked?

Some brands have taken to using high-resolution telephoto or periscope cameras and cropping in to tout a higher native zoom factor.

The most recent case of blurring the lines between optical and hybrid zoom centers on the Samsung Galaxy S20 series. Samsung claims 64MP 3x “hybrid-optic” zoom for the Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus, and 48MP 10x “hybrid-optic” zoom for the S20 Ultra. The sheer fact that Samsung invented a new term should tell you that we might not be looking at true 3x and 10x optical zoom respectively.

We’ve contacted Samsung to ask about the native zoom factor of these phones, and it’s confirmed that the S20 Ultra offers a 4x periscope zoom camera. We haven’t heard from Samsung about the S20 and S20 Plus as of writing, but NotebookCheck reports that the two devices offer a mere 1.06x zoom camera. The phones merely seem to be cropping via the ultra high-resolution cameras and using software processing to get to 3x and 10x “hybrid-optic” zoom then.

Even HUAWEI, which generally popularized the use of “hybrid zoom” as a term and has done a solid job of differentiating between optical and hybrid zoom, isn’t immune to this. The brand doesn’t mention “digital zoom” on its P30 Pro product page when talking about 50x zoom (although it did so in press releases). You can argue that the “digital” in “digital zoom” is implied at such high zoom factors, but the average consumer might certainly think there’s more to it.

The most recent example comes from realme and its X50 Pro 5G. The firm interchangeably uses “20x zoom” and “20x hybrid zoom” in its marketing for the phone, while claiming “5x hybrid-optical zoom” as well. So what’s the difference here?

“None, they’re the same,” a realme representative told Android Authority in an emailed response. “Hybrid always combines optical plus digital. Sometimes they indicate ‘hybrid optical’ and just avoid the ‘and digital’ part.”

But why make a distinction between “5x hybrid optical” zoom and “20x hybrid zoom” if they’re the same thing, then?

It might not be zoom-related, but Apple isn’t immune to clumsy camera marketing either. The firm failed to adequately explain that its night mode doesn’t work with the telephoto camera, even though you have the option of 2x zoom in this mode.

Multiple Ports On Your Pc: What Do They Do For You?

While the examples here focus on desktop PCs, most of these connections are available on various laptop PCs as well.

Schizophrenic USB

USB used to be simple. You had USB 2.0 and… that was it. USB 1.0 connections existed for a brief time, but once USB 2.0 came along, with substantially better throughput, it became widely adopted. As with any widely adopted standard, variants appeared. Let’s look at some flavors of USB you might find, and how they might vary.

USB 2.0 is the standard port type. These days, mice, keyboards, hard drives, optical drives, printers, and just about anything else can be found in a USB 2.0 flavor to plug into one of these ports. Even with the emergence of USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed USB), USB 2.0 is still the most versatile connection.

This particular type of USB port ships on certain recent Asus-manufactured motherboards. This is a standard USB 2.0 port, and can be used as a normal connection to USB 2.0 devices. However, it’s also able to auto-install a BIOS. You need to copy a special BIOS flash program to a USB flash memory key, as well as the BIOS you want to install. Then press a button next to the port when the system is powered up, and the BIOS auto-installs. This is a pretty geeky feature, tailor-made for hard-core enthusiasts who may have gotten themselves into trouble with severe overclocking or other tweaks.

These types of ports are available on motherboards made by Asus, Gigabyte and possibly other manufacturers. It increases the available trickle current out of the USB port to charge up mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. This is in response to devices like Apple’s iPad, which requires more current to charge than the normal USB 2.0 port might supply to charge in a reasonable amount of time.

USB 3.0 is the latest version of USB, and is also known as SuperSpeed USB. It increases maximum throughput to 5 gigabits per second (625MB per second.) Most PCs implement USB 3.0 through a discrete chip built onto the motherboard, but some AMD chipsets have USB 3.0 built into the PC’s core logic. Intel will be building USB 3.0 into its core logic in its next-generation Ivy Bridge chipsets.

USB 3.0 is backward-compatible, so you can plug in USB 2.0 devices, but you’ll get only USB 2.0 speeds. Also, USB 3.0 cables are different than earlier USB cables, so be sure to get the right cable type for your USB 3.0 device, if your spiffy SuperSpeed USB gizmo didn’t include a cable in the box.

Next: eSATA, Audio, and Networking

eSATA: Redundant, but Useful

Enter eSATA or external SATA. The latest eSATA connections can handle 6gbps SATA drives and connections, which is a little faster than USB 3.0. A variety of external SATA enclosures exist that support various RAID formats if you’re looking for redundant storage.

Networking Connections

The most obvious networking connection on desktop PCs is the ubiquitous ethernet jack.

Gigabit ethernet is built into most systems today, and if you have a wired house, there’s currently no faster network connection available, though that may change if 802.11ac wireless networking becomes a reality.

Some motherboards support wireless connectivity. Those that do now ship with 802.11n Wi-Fi on board, which does allow for throughput up to 600 megabits per second. And you can even occasionally find Bluetooth on board, as this image indicates. This allows easier integration with Bluetooth-capable devices, such as smartphones.

The Sound and the Fury: Audio Connections

The most commonly used audio connections are the analog minijacks on the back of the PC. If you’re one of those rare folk with a multichannel PC speaker setup, you’ll use three or four output connections–typically green, black, orange, and gray–to your speaker setup for multichannel audio. The pink one is the microphone input and the blue jack is the line input.

Of all the types of connectors, monitor connections seem to have the longest lifespan. It always surprises me when I unpack a Dell monitor to find the VGA cable pre-attached. What century is this again?

Systems supporting integrated graphics often still have VGA connectors. Most monitors shipping today still offer VGA as a connection as well, though we’re finally seeing some displays without that ancient analog connector. I see very few discrete graphics cards with VGA any longer, though most still ship with a DVI-to-VGA dongle should you need it.

DVI (digital visual interface) first appeared in 1999, while VGA emerged over a decade earlier, in 1987. However, both DVI and VGA will ride off into the sunset together in 2023. DVI was the first widely adopted digital connection for PC monitors, and will be superseded by DisplayPort.

DisplayPort seems redundant, given the existence of HDMI. But DisplayPort brings a few wrinkles to the table for PC monitors, wrinkles not available with HDMI. Licensing is one aspect–DisplayPort is licensed through the industry standards body VESA, and is royalty-free. With DisplayPort 1.2, you can daisy-chain up to two high-bandwidth monitors, and the standard will support DisplayPort hubs for connecting even more monitors. DisplayPort also supports bit rates up to twice the throughput of HDMI, enabling support for very-high-resolution displays.

DisplayPort can also carry audio signals, up to eight channels total, with an aggregate bandwidth of 49 megabits per second.

Mini-DisplayPort was originally popularized by Apple, but is included as part of DisplayPort 1.2. It’s common on current-generation graphics cards built with AMD Radeon HD 6000 and HD 7000 series graphics cards.

Next: The Past and the Future

Showing Their Age

A number of connectors still show up in a few systems, even though they’re rarely used by most home PC users. Some of these are more useful for businesses, which may need them to support older hardware still used to help run some applications.

FireWire, or IEEE 1394, is also still fairly common, though rarer on the newest motherboards. It’s useful if you have older camcorders or pro audio gear.

The nine-pin serial port is almost impossible to find any longer; this picture is from an old Pentium 4-based motherboard. Despite that scarcity, a number of laboratory instruments, point-of-sale devices, and other hardware in some businesses require serial connections. In fact, you’ll find serial-port pinouts available on many recent-generation motherboards, but no way to actually connect them. You can buy PCI bracket adapters with serial ports that plug into these motherboard connectors, and a few boards do ship with those adapters.

Future Connections

We haven’t shown some connections you’ll likely see in PCs this coming year, or may already exist on some Apple Mac OS systems. One example is Thunderbolt, the new high-speed serial interface that has appeared on some Apple systems. It’s likely that we’ll see Thunderbolt ports on upcoming Ivy Bridge-based systems running Windows later this year.
