Suggested December 2023 Storage Vendors Show Support For San Standards

Most of the time they are bitter rivals, but four of the largest storage vendors Tuesday joined together under the umbrella of interoperability to announce support for some new storage area network standards.

The companies have encouraging all other storage vendors to join them, but conspicuously absent from the announcement were SNIA members such as EMC, Hewlett Packard, Legato, Computer Associates and Fujitsu Softek.

“There is growing concern among storage customers surrounding depth of integration, timeliness to market, and costs involved with API swapping,” said Enterprise Storage Group analyst Steve Kenniston. “Industry efforts that comply with, and support SNIA and SMI specifications are going to be embraced by storage customers.”

CIM/WBEM has been endorsed by SNIA as the technology to help enable simplified multi-vendor management of storage networks. All four companies helped in drafting the SNIA-adopted Bluefin/SMI specifications. These specs define how CIM technology is used to manage storage environments.

As part of their commitment, Hitachi, IBM, Sun and VERITAS are expected to ship compliant software next year, make their CIM Providers (SMI Agents) available to others for testing, conduct joint interoperability testing and qualifications and support both emerging SMI specifications and the CIM/WBEM interface as specified by SNIA’s Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF).

“Storage customers want management solutions that lower TCO, open the door to heterogeneous solutions and are standards based,” said SNIA chairman Brad Stamas. “The SNIA recognizes the importance of CIM/WBEM standards in building and achieving open, interoperable storage management, and believes that this announcement will accelerate development and acknowledgment of CIM/WBEM standards-based solutions in the industry.”

Each of the companies said they have individual plans to roll out CIM/WBEM-based products in calendar year 2003.

For example, Hitachi’s HiCommand Management Framework and suite of software products, announced in May 2002, is expected to ship with its first CIM compliant features and modules by the end of this quarter, and continue to ship with expanded features through 2003.

IBM said it has plans to ship new CIM-enabled disk storage products during the first half of 2003. Big Blue also has plans to CIM enable their Tivoli Software storage products and ship new CIM-enabled products during the first half of 2003.

In August 2002, Sun Microsystems shipped its CIM compliant Sun StorEdge Enterprise Storage Manager, but said it is still committing to enhance and expand ESM’s CIM compliance, and introduce CIM providers for more of its hardware products, during the first half of 2003.

VERITAS said it plans on tweaking its heterogeneous products such as VERITAS SANPoint Control and VERITAS Volume Manager to adapt to CIM through a specific program.

“Industry standards promise to simplify the interoperability of storage area networks that are part of our data center operations,” said Joe Aultman, Technical Director of Enterprise Storage, BellSouth. “The commitment to deliver standards-based storage products expressed today by these industry leaders has increased our confidence in deploying solutions based on the new standards.”

Analysts have thoughts of grandeur for the storage software market. Aberdeen Group proclaimed the storage spending will reach $21.2 billion by 2005. That is a general view for which there are many subsectors, such as storage resource management (SRM), which IDC said will reap more than $4.6 billion in revenue by 2006.

Egnyte For Cloud File Storage, Backup

However, no one has been able to replace that big server in the closet that serves up files and backs up the desktop computers.

Until now…

Now a new startup is planning on putting that last bit of server hardware out into “the Cloud”. Sunnyvale based Egnyte lets small businesses (read: 3-15 employees) operate their file server and backups outside of their local offices.

According to Egnyte’s CEO, Vineet Jain, more than half of their customers are Mac users. Of course, you’d expect to see small creative design shops using a tool like Egnyte, but he says he also sees a lot of people from the medical field that share, exchange and backup huge medical imaging files. He also sees video outfits who want to share large/HD videos with their clients in their original form, not compressed for YouTube or Revver streaming.

The company is small and nimble at this point but they have large ambitions. Just like the Basecamp and Google Apps crowd, they intend to service the millions of small businesses around the world that would like to offload some of their IT infrastructure to service providers.

How does it work? You sign up for a special URL on their webpage. The process is quick and you are ready to go in a minute. You can then upload files to the website like an FTP server. However, this is all web-based for those clients that can’t get their head around the FTP process. In a matter of minutes, I was able to upload a 350 megabyte video file from a web page using my hotel’s shotty Internet connection. I could then download the file quickly onto another computer. The Egnyte interface can also generate a public URL that you can pass along to your clients.

The application asks you to put in your company URL name and your username and password. Once successfully authenticated, you can set up your machine to do a granular backup using the web interface. You will also see a mounted share that contains the same directories that the web interface shows. It is all really, really easy.

Testing from Europe the speed was blazingly fast. From my Paris apartment on 100mb fiber, I uploaded a 700mb video in under five minutes. From our firm’s New York Office, files were downloaded from the web even quicker. Egnyte compresses files using the web interface to speed uncompressed files.

The downside is that this service, like all web services, exists outside of your office and largely outside of your control. If the Internet goes down, you are separated from all of your files. Egnyte is working on offering an appliance to its larger customers that will be an rsynced duplicate of their cloud shares.

There is also the small, outside risk of this company going under. Egnyte hopes to quell these fear with a 30-day guarantee. If they are canceling your acount or going offline for any reason, they will give their customers 30 days to download their information off of the servers.

The performance of this service also depends largely on your company’s (and clients’) Internet speed. Normal DSL broadband will be a little clunky uploading and backing up files. You’ll want to be as high end as possible to get the best performance out of Egnyte.

Overall, this is a fantastic service for small organizations. If I had any requests, it’d be that Egnyte work with Basecamp and Google Apps APIs or my company’s LDAP server to authenticate users so two directories don’t need to be created and transparency to users could be implemented.

What are the benefits of chatbots for businesses?

Chatbots offer several benefits for businesses. Here are a few of them:

Enhanced customer service: Chatbots can provide instant responses to common customer queries, reducing wait times and improving overall customer experience. They can also operate 24/7, ensuring constant customer support without a human agent.

Increased efficiency: By automating routine tasks, task oriented chatbots can free up human resources to handle more complex issues. This improves overall business efficiency and can lead to cost savings.

Scalability: A single bot can handle multiple conversations simultaneously. This means a business can scale up its customer service operations without a corresponding increase in human resources.

What is a WhatsApp chatbot?

A WhatsApp chatbot is a specific type of business chatbot that interacts with customers via WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging apps.

WhatsApp chatbots can fulfill most of the tasks a chatbot does, such as answering customer inquiries, providing product information, or booking appointments, all within the WhatsApp platform.

Using WhatsApp allows businesses to engage with their customers where they are already spending time, potentially leading to improved customer satisfaction and increased sales.

WhatsApp is the number one messenger application in Malaysia (see the figure below). As customers prefer to use WhatsApp as a communication channel, it becomes a necessity for businesses in Malaysia to connect to them via this platform.

What are the benefits of WhatsApp chatbots over other chatbots?

WhatsApp chatbots offer several benefits for businesses. If your business aims one or some of these benefits specifically, then it might be a better decision to choose a WhatsApp chatbot or include one into your other chatbot solutions.

Customer engagement: A WhatsApp bot can be programmed to send personalized messages and offer tailored product recommendations. This can help to increase customer engagement and loyalty.

Reach: WhatsApp has over 2 billion users globally, so using a WhatsApp chatbot opens up a large potential audience for businesses. In certain markets, like India, Malaysia, and many other countries, WhatsApp is the leading messaging app, making it a particularly effective channel for customer interaction.

End-to-end encrypted conversations: WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption for all its messages, making it a secure platform for sensitive business communication. While this doesn’t mean other platforms aren’t secure, WhatsApp’s universally applied encryption is a distinct feature.

Delivery of rich media content: While many chatbot platforms support rich media, the familiarity and ease of use of WhatsApp’s interface might make it particularly effective for delivering media content to customers. This could include product images, videos, audio messages, or documents.

Ibm’s Futuristic Storage Aims For Speed, Density

IBM highlighted two futuristic technologies that researchers are exploring now to address separate challenges: how to make primary data available faster and how to pack archived information into a smaller space. For the former, the company is developing so-called “racetrack” storage, in which data is stored in different magnetic regions that travel over short, nano-scale wires when accessed. It may come on sale in five to seven years, according to Bruce Hillsberg, IBM’s director of storage systems research. For the latter, researchers are using an unspecified magnetic technology that could store a petabyte of data in a standard 1U rack unit. Expect that in three years, Hillsberg said.

Storage Class Memory

IBM thinks “racetrack” technology will pave the way for Storage Class Memory, which will be nearly as fast as today’s memory but be able to scale up to enterprise storage capacity. It’s so dense that it could allow a portable music player to hold 500,000 songs.

With Storage Class Memory, the amount of space and power required to store large enterprise data sets could shrink dramatically by 2023. What would take 1,250 racks of hard disk drives today could be stored in one rack, with less than one-third the energy, Hillsberg said. The medium will also last longer than the flash SSDs (solid-state drives) now used for fast storage, he said.

A Petabyte in a Rack Unit

The other device IBM is working on, which it called simply the “petabyte storage device,” would be designed to store data for as long as 50 years without the need for migration to another medium, Hillsberg said. Moving content from one device to a newer generation of hardware costs money and time and can introduce record-keeping errors, he said.

Without giving more details about the device, Hillsberg said it would have some moving parts but not as many as a tape library, the typical solution for long-term archiving today. He envisions it being used not as a replacement for tape but in conjunction with it, possibly to provide access to archived data over a cloud infrastructure.

Hollywood’s Storage Woes

That data has to be stored and secured on location and sent each day to post-production facilities, which is done by transferring it to tape and physically shipping it, because networks aren’t fast enough, Ward said. The footage and associated metadata is used throughout the editing of the movie, and is then compressed into formats for use in theaters and homes. But studios want to keep all the original footage, just as they used to keep the uncut film, to use years later for sequels and other projects, he said. A 3-D movie may take up 1 petabyte of capacity, and the industry is still working on how to handle that.

Health-care Data Demand

The health-care industry is facing the prospect of even more data than the entertainment business, according to Paul Markham, vice president of global strategy and marketing at TeraMedica. On Thursday, his company is introducing a medical archiving system based on IBM hardware and software. The medical records of a patient in the U.S. represent on average about 1 terabyte of data today, and one 300-bed hospital may generate 30T bytes of data per year, Markham said. Those figures will only grow with higher-resolution medical imaging, he said.

Speed Is a Lower Priority

IBM’s proposed long-term storage device may be more crucial for enterprises than will Storage Class Memory, said Forrester Research analyst Andrew Reichman. Many IT departments have more speed than they need, because they want to make sure storage access doesn’t slow down applications. The bigger problem is how to deal with the data they need to keep for a long time, he said. That involves sunk costs in real estate and energy, as well as management.

“Being able to store a petabyte in 1U is going to be massively valuable,” Reichman said.

However, the biggest challenge of the moment for most enterprises is knowing what data to put in what form of storage, for the benefit of application users, he said. Application and storage managers need to communicate better to make that possible.
