Suggested January 2024 The Startup Nation Israel And Its Top Startups
Israel’s capital Tel Aviv ranks sixth in the global startup hub rankings. Silicon Wadi the tech valley of Israel hosts 4300 startups. A desert nation surrounded by enemies and is short on water resources has managed to mark its place in the world rankings. Exactly, this is why it is also called as ‘Startup Nation’. The Israel Defense Forces in collaboration with the government and venture capital companies have pushed the nation to the level it is at today. It also finds its name among one of those countries where it is the easiest to pioneer a startup. The nation boasts of the highest per capita venture capital in the world. With a minuscule population of 8 million and total GDP of US$153 billion, about 14% of it is spent on the tech ecosystem of the country accounting for US$22 billion. Now such atmosphere attracts startups from other nations and eventually adds up to the economy of Israel.

Top 5 Best Cities For Millennial Startups
No matter what generation you call your own, you can’t deny this fact: the Millennial generation — those born between 1981 and 1997 — is changing the world and the way it does business.
The oldest Millennials are 35-ish right about now. The youngest are finishing high school. Together, they are 80 million strong and are the largest generation in U.S. history. According to studies, one-half to two-thirds of U.S. Millennials are interested in entrepreneurship. In 2011 alone, Millennials started 160,000 new businesses every month.
And they’re looking for homes for their startups. Understandably, America’s cities are launching marketing campaigns to entice young entrepreneurs and college graduates to their centers. But how does one determine which cities are most friendly to young startups?
Austin, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and SeattleBeginning in 2013, NerdWallet launched an annual report looking at the “Best Cities for Young Entrepreneurs.”
The reports take into consideration the factors that matter most to young entrepreneurial millennials. Those factors include:
Access to funding;
Opportunities to network, collaborate, and mentor and be mentored;
Economic health of the community; and
Affordability.
The latest NerdWallet report analyzed 181 metropolitan areas in the United States to determine which places are most friendly and the least expensive to launch a business, particularly for those just starting out in their careers.
Some top tier cities — think San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston — are home to most of Forbes’ annual 30-under-30 overachievers. But those cities, while full of Millennials, aren’t necessarily economically-friendly to startups and their needs.
However, three less-prominent cities show up in consistently in NerdWallet’s 2013, 2014, and 2023 lists.
Austin, TexasNerdWallet ranking in 2023: #1. Home to the annual South by Southwest Conference and Festival (SXSW), Austin is a rapidly growing technology hub that offers young entrepreneurs a low cost of living (10.9 percent above national average), low unemployment rate (3.5 percent), and a well-educated population (41.5 with a bachelor’s degree or higher).
Austin is also home to Dell and the University of Texas, with 50,000 students, so those choosing Austin for a startup will mean plenty of peers to work with and hire from. Austin ranked highest — 17.5 percent — in population ages 25 to 34, says NerdWallet’s 2023 report.
Minneapolis-St. Paul, MinnesotaNerdWallet ranking in 2023: #5. Like Austin, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area (known as the Twin Cities) is a smart place to live, just under Austin in formal education at 39.3 percent. The cost of living is a touch below the national average (.06 percent) and the unemployment rate about the same as Austin at 3.4 percent.
Minnesota is more diverse than one might think, given its Midwest location. According to the Star-Tribune, more than 20 percent of people ages 18 to 34 are people of color and the Twin Cities are friendly to both diversity and business. In fact, it ranks fourth on NerdWallet’s list of best cities for female entrepreneurs.
Minneapolis is also a growing tech town and is home to monster brands Target and Best Buy. For those young startups focused on the outdoors, the Twin Cities are a natural fit with a national park that boasts 72 miles of riverfront.
Seattle, WashingtonNerdWallet ranking in 2023: #6. Although Seattle’s cost of living is higher than average, it is home to a high percentage of young professionals (21.8 percent are between ages 25 to 34). Seattle is also very highly educated with nearly 50 percent of adults with a bachelor’s degree, providing Millennial entrepreneurs with great opportunity for collaboration.
Some target Seattle as the next Silicon Valley, as the tech climate has changed to allow smaller, but sizable, tech companies like Zillow and Expedia to grab a piece of the pie.
Forbes ranks Seattle the sixth best place in the country for business and careers and places it at 142 in cost of doing business.
Birmingham and BoiseTwo other locations popped to the top as best cities for Millennial entrepreneurs in another first-time ranking. IT training startup ITProTV talked to 8,000 business owners across the country to determine which cities have the most entrepreneur-friendly climates. As part of that survey, they looked at answers from founders under age 34 to get a better idea of those places likely to welcome young business startups.
At the top of the list: Birmingham, Alabama, and Boise, Idaho. Time will tell whether these two cities one day become the next gathering places for Millennials.

Nexus 5 Details Add Up: Appearing In The Uk And Netherlands Update: And Israel
Nexus 5 details add up: appearing in the UK and Netherlands UPDATE: and Israel
This morning the LG-made Nexus 5 appears to be showing up in-stock (or nearly in-stock) across the world. One of the several stock images appearing this morning comes from Carphone Warehouse, a carrier inside the UK that’s generally got leaks such as this just as often as the rest of the leaks universe. Another leak this morning comes from a Dutch website that’s contacted a local retailer and found – via pre-order information – that their stock of Nexus 5 devices will be arriving as soon as Wednesday – making way for a Halloween or November 1st launch.
Availability of the Nexus 5 appear to be in our midst. Word that the Nexus 5 was going to be available in late October may end up being proven true as a Halloween launch would add up quite well with the Android 4.4 KitKat tie-in. The same could be true of an early November launch, of course, as there are still 18 days left in the KitKat candy promotion as such.
UPDATE: LG Israel – via local brand RONLIGHT have confirmed a November 5th event for Android 4.4 KitKat on the Nexus 4 via TG Spot. This could very well mean that the software will hit larger areas in the world such as Israel in the immediate future, but looks to have little to do with the Nexus 5. Judge as you might.
The Dutch site suggests that the Nexus 5 will be arriving with a 459 Euro price tag for a 16GB internal storage edition. This pricing would suggest that the Nexus 4 would indeed be keeping a lower point while the Nexus 5 days the higher, the Nexus 4 here rebooted in a 4G LTE mode. This would allow the Google Nexus universe to hold sway over two different display sizes in phones as well as two different display sizes in tablets.
It’s also been suggested today that the Nexus 10 2013 edition is on its way, complete with some rather odd and off-putting tips. The tip we’re seeing here from the Netherlands seems a bit more on-the-level. The original source at Tweakers have since earlier this morning added an update suggesting the carrier, BelSimpel, had taken down their pre-listing page and suggested they never had official word in the first place – oddness!
Further details from Google+ user Jasper Vinkenvleugel on the link of Taylow Wimberly suggests that the (relatively high) pricing on the device may be due to LG selling the phone in the Netherlands rather than Google. It’s likely the Google-sold version in the USA and in the UK will be a bit cheaper.
Inside the UK you’ll find the White version of the LG Nexus 5 appearing in stock to the tune of 1,500 units. This local stock enquiry was brought to you by an anonymous source speaking with Android Police, one that they find reliable. This source appears to be using the same “archaic” system as leaking last year’s Nexus 4 from Carphone Warehouse in the UK. It’d be extremely strange if they only had the white, but it’s likely they’ve got just as many black in stock at the same time – one at a time, after all.
Thanks for the tip, Brian!
Have a peek at the Nexus 5 timeline below and keep your eyes open – there’s little doubt now that Google will be announcing a phone on its own, if not the phone, the larger tablet, and the operating system update all at once – soon!
No, The New Macbook (And Its Single Usb
No, the new MacBook (and its single USB-C) isn’t for everyone
More controversial than the keyboard, more divisive than the battery life: the thing that’s causing the greatest number of arguments about the new Retina MacBook is its paucity of ports. A single USB-C on the left side of the notebook isn’t, as Vincent observed in our own review of the 2023 MacBook, a deal breaker, but not everyone is quite so ready to be convinced. It’s a legitimate concern, even if in the grand history of tech it’s not a new one.
Apple’s minimalism is partly a side-effect of trying to build the skinniest, most power-sipping laptop possible, and another part “Grand Scheme” thinking. Sure, a second USB-C – a technology which can handle not only data, but hook up displays and even charge the MacBook – would’ve been a nice addition, but that’s just how the Cupertino designers and engineers made it.
So, you live with it, or you buy something else.
Living with it involves dongles and adapters, at least during the transition period. I’m not so worried about cost per-se – since USB-C is an industry-wide standard, not something any one company controls, I don’t have concerns of price-gouging – and I think that the standardization means we’ll see faster adoption than, say, Lightning or even Thunderbolt.
Dongles may not be the most elegant aspect of mobile computing, but in many ways they’re unavoidable. I currently carry around a 15-inch MacBook Pro, and always have a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter in my bag: sure, most of the time WiFi is sufficient, but there’ll occasionally be a point where a wired connection is faster, more practical, or simply the only option.
Am I ready to do the same for the outgoing USB port? At first glance it’s hard to imagine, though when I really think about it, there’s a limited number of things I’m found commonly plugging in. USB sticks and an SD card from my camera are probably the most frequent.
On the desktop, meanwhile, I rely on an iMac rather than plugging my MacBook Pro into an external monitor. Dropbox and other cloud services keep all of my files up to date across both machines. If I use a mouse, it’s Bluetooth not wired.
Most galling then, personally speaking, is the fact that Apple doesn’t include even the USB-C to USB adapter in the box. That seems a little miserly, to ask an extra $19 on top of a $1,299+ laptop, when it’s frankly impossible to imagine any MacBook buyer not needing to plug at least one old-school USB device in.
After all, right now there’s no such thing as a USB to Lightning cable, so even Apple’s own phones and tablets need a dongle if you’re not content with a wireless link.
Am I a niche user considering a laptop made for niche users? Certainly. For me, a dongle or two in my bag is preferable to a heavier computer overall. I’m not saying that’ll be the case for you, but I can weigh the compromises involved and decide that, like giving up on optical media, I’m at a place where I can make the leap to USB-C and all that entails.
Make no mistake, though, this is the direction Apple is headed, and other products will only fall in line in future. Just as earlier Macs did away with optical drives, and slimmed the number of ports down in favor of multifunctional ones like USB, so the chase for “one socket to rule them all” is almost certain to spread across the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and onto the desktop.
Is the new MacBook the laptop for you? Possibly not if, as Vincent pointed out, you have a bag or desk full of legacy devices you want to hook up. The lessons Apple learns from it will proliferate through the Mac range, though; USB-C specifically is meanwhile showing up on machines from other manufacturers already, so even if you’re not an OS X fan it’ll be something you need to consider eventually.
Early adoption isn’t for everybody. Neither is it always headache or compromise free. It’s the reason why the new MacBook sits alongside – rather than replacing – the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro: some people will buy it, but nowhere near every Mac lover. Happily, a little patience and many more will get to enjoy the fruits of Apple’s research.

Politics
POV: Redefining US National Security in a Divided and Unequal Nation “Our strategic tunnel vision is clouding our thinking on what it means to keep America safe”The primary responsibility of the US government is to keep every American safe from harm. China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran are all focused and determined on changing the post–World War II order. While America’s eyes are focused on the long-term challenge posed by China, Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine highlights the volatility of today’s strategic environment. America needs to stop looking through the myopic lens of enormous defense budgets as the sole barometer of our security. By negating other key items that should classify under the broad umbrella of national security, we are sacrificing the future safety of our children and grandchildren.
America’s defense strategy is focused on one major assumption—the next conflict will be an away game. Our entire defense establishment, capabilities, and organization is based on this core concept. This naiveté in strategy has paralyzed us into thinking that it is incomprehensible that the next war could be fought on our own shores. We are accustomed to watching wars unfold on cable news with virtually no impact to most of our citizens—Afghanistan and Iraq, and now Ukraine, are prime examples. While the best defense is a strong offense, our strategic tunnel vision is clouding our thinking on what it means to keep America safe. While adequately resourcing the US military is important, it isn’t the only requirement in our collective security.
We’re living in the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” world. Senior defense and military leaders continually complain that they don’t have enough resources. Yet the United States spends an astronomical amount on its military and national-security enterprise. The fiscal year 2023 Congressional-approved defense budget was a staggering $782 billion. The House Armed Services Committee recently approved its version of the fiscal year 2023 defense bill, with a top-line of nearly $840 billion. While the bipartisan nature of the Senate and House Armed Services Committees is a welcome respite from the partisan knife fights on Capitol Hill, pouring money into the Defense Department isn’t the cure-all of American security. It is impossible to have a strong defense, while on the other hand elected leaders are chipping away at the very fabric of our democracy on unfounded claims of fraud in the last election.
We’re spending nearly a trillion dollars per year on our defense budget, at the same time that we’re missing critical components of a comprehensive security strategy. The Biden administration has failed to produce a National Security Strategy and the Department of Defense has failed to produce an unclassified version of the National Defense Strategy and the Nuclear Posture Review. While most Americans don’t read or care about these documents, it is a fundamental right in our democracy that we understand the policies and guidance that are aligned to the trillions of dollars spent on national defense. Blindly following a leader’s will isn’t a democratic principle. Questioning our leaders is a moral obligation in our democracy.
Resourcing education as a national imperativeAmerica needs a highly educated and highly trained workforce to compete against the Chinese juggernaut; however, we’re already losing that battle. According to a paper published in 2023 by the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, “We find that China has consistently produced more STEM doctorates than the United States since the mid-2000s, and that the gap between the two countries will likely grow wider in the next five years…by 2025 Chinese universities will produce more than 77,000 STEM PhD graduates per year compared to approximately 40,000 in the United States. If international students are excluded from the US count, Chinese STEM PhD graduates would outnumber their US counterparts more than three-to-one…”
It is impossible to develop the complex weapon systems we need without a strong science and engineering workforce. Additionally, operating these weapon systems requires an equally educated force.
Allocating resources to America’s 16,800 school districts is a national security imperative. A high-quality education, regardless of where you live and how much money you make, must be a fundamental right in this country. In this same vein, making community colleges free and tackling the abhorrent cost of higher education is another imperative. Without the brilliance of NASA’s African American female leaders in the 1960s, we would not have beaten the Soviets in the Space Race. Today’s competition against China is equally as fierce. In a country whose population pales in comparison to China’s, we can’t leave anyone behind.
Education in America demands we understand our country and the world around us. Banning books is the antithesis to an educated populace. Nearly 140 school districts in 32 states issued more than 2,500 book bans during the 2023-22 school year, affecting nearly four million students across 5,000 schools, according to the [PEN America] report “Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools.” If our schoolchildren can’t distinguish opinion from fact and can’t embrace different cultures and beliefs, it will be impossible for them to develop the solutions to America’s most pressing problems. In some places in this country, ignorance is a badge of honor.
Acknowledging America’s broken democracyThe “Big Lie” in the 2023 election is indeed the biggest lie perpetrated on the American public. The hallmark of our democracy used to be the peaceful transition of power—our recent one-term presidents (Carter and Bush) showed the world the strength of our democracy. Winning at all costs and putting party above all has pitted Americans against Americans. It is in our normal vernacular to discuss red states versus blue states. But we’ve been here before and the outcome was America’s bloodiest war. I never understood why the road I took from my home in Virginia to the Pentagon was called the Jefferson Davis Highway—there isn’t an Adolph Hitler Highway in Germany. Seriously, we’re exalting the president of the Confederacy on the way to the headquarters of the US military.
Some governors are now attacking other states and using migrants as the weapon. Instead of embracing migrants that come to this country, they fly them (without their approval or knowledge) to blue states, and then they bask in the warm embrace of their constituents. The strength of a nation isn’t measured by the number of nuclear weapons or aircraft carriers they have, but on how they take care of the less fortunate in their communities.
Our democracy is broken when the legitimacy of an election is questioned when your candidate doesn’t win.
Our democracy is broken when instead of addressing the problem on immigration we use people as the weapon.
Our democracy is broken when the Nazi flag is displayed in the US Capitol and there isn’t an outcry from 535 members of Congress.
Our democracy is broken when women can no longer control their bodies.
Our democracy is broken when we make it difficult or impossible for every American to vote.
Our democracy is broken when we believe that this behavior is normal.
Repairing our democracy is a national security imperative.
Affluent to impoverished—all need to be treated equalThe recently approved Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a foundational component of national security. Our nation is weakened when some Americans don’t have clean water to drink, comprehensive healthcare, access to high-speed internet or are forced to live near an EPA superfund site. Every American community—from the most affluent to the most impoverished—needs basic services. To compete in a highly competitive world, every American needs the opportunity to be successful. This nation doesn’t have a resource problem—it has a priority problem. We always find the resources needed for the Pentagon, but taking care of Americans takes a back seat. Allocating some of these precious resources to communities of color is a national security imperative.
For America to compete in this new world order, we need to open our eyes and realize that our strength is more than our military. The path we’re on is weakening our nation. Only by broadening what we consider national security will we have a fighting chance in a complicated world. Putting the American flag on the back of your pickup truck isn’t patriotic. Treating everyone in America with respect is the most patriotic thing we can do.
