It’s all too easy to get lost in a dizzying array of accessories for Apple devices, especially with too many companies rehashing same old ideas and doing the exact same thing. That’s why my initial experience with Twelve South instantly made me a believer.

On Thursday, the Charleston, South Carolina firm launched the Rutledge BookBook, a new edition of its popular BookBook case for MacBooks, hand-distressed to give each one a slightly different appearance, so no two look exactly alike…

Designed for the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display (including a version made just for the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro), this artisan leather case is basically a reworked version of the original BookBook which has been my only MacBook Air case for the past three years.

“While the case protects your MacBook, the design protects your unique sense of style,” says Twelve South. The main difference between the original BookBook and the Rutledge Edition is an entirely new leather-coloring technique that gives each one an even more distinct look.

This is what I’m talking about.

Don’t worry, your 13-inch MacBook with Rutledge BookBook fits inside a bag made for the 15-incher. Likewise, a 15-inch MacBook with Rutledge fits inside a 17-inch bag. As a rule of thumb, your bag should be the next size up from your MacBook.

It just looks gorgeous, those deep sepia tones of a vintage film strip and the shades of a sunburst guitar.

Each Rutledge is a story in itself.

Searching for something completely different, Twelve South developed an entirely new technique for finishing leather.

This innovative process involves applying multiple layers of color, and then carefully removing selected elements by hand to reveal a brilliant tapestry of hues and patterns.

Like a fingerprint, the resulting tones and patterns are completely unique to the natural variations of the leather itself.

Review: Bookbook Case, The Ultimate Hollowed Out Book Trick For Your Air

I took Twelve South’s BookBook for Air for an extensive spin through a bunch of everyday usage scenarios and in various urban and Mediterranean settings.

I have an admission to make: I’ve never been a big fan of protective cases for Apple products. There, I said it. I especially have an issue with notebook cases, many of which unfortunately can be brushed off as cheap-looking, overpriced gimmicks that don’t hold a candle to Apple’s industrial design. I didn’t cave even after the paint had started to come off of my first Apple notebook, a titanium-clad PowerBook G4, because I bumped it one time too many.

It is fair to say that in all those years I’ve never gotten my head around utilizing protective sleeves to keep my pricey hardware in pristine condition. To me, Apple gear is meant to be displayed, touched and marveled at. The BookBook case for Air has changed my preconceived notions overnight. Oozing style, premium quality, convenience and authenticity, it’s the first case I reckoned would actually protect my Air whilst keep those prying eyes at bay. It’s what notebook cases are meant to be, at least in my view.

If there ever was such a thing as the ultimate hollowed book trick, this is probably it.

For the record, I’ve seen, touched and tried hundreds of cases over the years, including sleeves by Twelve South, a small Mount Pleasant, South-Carolina-based shop renowned for the accessories engineered exclusively for Apple computers (their tagline fittingly proclaims “We’re not just Mac friendly – we’re Mac only”). Eagle-eyed readers might point out we already highlighted their hollowed out book case and its wallet-shaped counterpart for iPhone. TwelveSouth was kind enough to send along a review sample just as I was purchasing a 13-inch Air this summer.

As I hit the coastline at the time to work from the beach, an opportunity presented itself to put the case through its paces in a variety of environments and interesting settings. While ensconced in it, my Air’s definitely seen some action. I’m talking extreme heat, sun rays on the beach, sunscreen grease, slippery fingers, fingerprints – not to mention bars, nightlife, girls gone mad and what not.

Build quality and details are striking even at close inspection.

I often chuckled as folks would think I had plucked an ancient book from a local library, more often than not demanding to inspect the well-worn “tome” with genuine curiosity. Flipping the case open reveals the soft, brown padded interior and a pair of elastic bands that slip around the corners of your notebook’s display. This lets you open the case and begin immediately using your Air without pulling it out. Leather does a good job protecting the machine from liquids, pesky dust particles, harsh environment and even accidental drops. Overall, the case feels sturdy and compact.

Attention to detail: Designer cornices tell you which side is the top.

The genuine leather case is handmade and hand-distressed to ensure that no two are alike.

If you’re anything like me – that is, a suspicious and whining type – you’ll want to double-check my review by taking a look at the BookBook case in one of the stores. My two cents? Take the plunge and I’ll swear you’ll never want to settle for anything less than pure perfection. How to create a unique and cohesive Instagram aesthetic Step 1. Establish your brand

Here’s a list of questions to help guide you through this process:

Who is your target audience? When you understand who your content is trying to speak to, developing your brand’s aesthetic becomes second-nature. A luxury pet clothing store in Beverly Hills will have a different audience than a Portland skateboard shop.

What are your core values? Different brands have different priorities that inform their overall look and feel on Instagram. If you’re a hiking supplies company that thrives on nature and sustainable clothing, for example, your brand’s Instagram page will reflect these values. It doesn’t need to be in-your-face, but can show up through color choices (more on that later), content subjects, and any messaging that’s shared through stylized text posts.

What’s your vibe? This might sound like a new-age skater dude kind of question, but it’s important to consider. Does your brand like to keep things casual and fun? Or minimalist and cool? Do you use a conversational tone with the occasional swear word thrown in? Or are you formal and composed? These questions can all help establish the type of ‘feel’ you’re going for.

Step 2. Take color seriously

Color is the single most important thing when it comes to creating a unique Instagram aesthetic for your brand.

Research finds that color influences consumer buying decisions by around 85%. Not only that, but color increases brand recognition by 80%. Making the right color decisions for your Instagram posts can actually impact your bottom line.

There are many ways to use the power of color to develop your Instagram aesthetic. If you already have a website, logo, and a presence on other social networks, use your pre-established brand colors.

Once you’ve picked your colors, incorporate them into your content. This doesn’t have to be obvious, but rather a certain tone or color family to stick to. Once you start doing this, you’ll notice how cohesive your Instagram page starts to look. Even if the content isn’t identical from post to post, a uniform color palette is naturally pleasing to the eye and will bring your page together.

Consumers judge a brand within 90 seconds of seeing it for the first time — and up to 90 percent of this judgement is based on color. Make sure your brand colors help shape your overall brand voice. For example, a happy-go-lucky children’s daycare might not want to have a completely dark and dreary feed.

Choosing your Instagram page colors can be tricky, but the following tips can help:

Create a Pinterest mood board. Start saving Pins that inspire you or are relevant to your brand to a Pinterest board. For example, if you’re a bathing suit company your Pinterest mood board might have photos of the beach, palm trees, picnic scenes, pool parties, and sunsets. Certain imagery will attract you more than others, so take note of any color patterns you see popping up in the content you save.

Create a color palette. If your brand doesn’t already have a color guide, it’s time to get one. Find six or less colors that you can commit to using throughout your content. Reference this group of colors anytime you create content, whether that’s in the form of a photo, video, or text-based post. Make sure at least one of your established colors are present in your post to ensure your Instagram aesthetic is consistent. If you don’t know where to start, the free online tool My Insta Palette shows you the most-used colors on your feed. If you notice a theme, choose your colors from these selections. As you create content moving forward, stick to your chosen palette.

Step 3. Discover the power of editing

If you’ve ever seen an Instagram page that seems to have all the right components but somehow just doesn’t work, you’ve noticed the power of editing.

The most cohesive Instagram aesthetics will have their editing style down pat. There’s no flip-flopping between dark and moody images and light and bright content. It all looks as if it was created on the same day and in the same light.

The easiest way to ensure your Instagram aesthetic is consistent is by editing your photos with presets. Instagram presets are premade filters you can apply to your photos using an editing program like Adobe Lightroom. You’ll no longer have to fiddle around for hours trying to remember exactly how much brightness you usually add to your photos.

Step 4. Plan, plan, plan

Step 5. Don’t just stop at your feed

You did it. You have a unique and cohesive Instagram feed. You can’t stop here, though.

Imagine if your favorite vegan ice cream place randomly introduced one meaty option? You’d feel thrown off and confused.

If you have a stunning and consistent Instagram feed, but other components on your page don’t match, your audience might wonder what’s going on.

A good place to start is with your Instagram Stories. Once you’ve established your Instagram aesthetic, create a style guide so you have something to refer to when creating Stories content. It will also help anyone else who posts on your account in the future align with your look and tone.

Recess is a sparkling water brand that has taken what could have been a boring product and made it completely enchanting through their Instagram presence.

The company applies their irreverent and humorous brand voice to their Instagram content in a way that makes sense. With a definite color palette (lavenders, rosie pinks, and light tangerines), Recess shares illustrations, text posts, and creative product shots.

Key takeaway: Don’t stick to one type of content. When you use a cohesive color palette you can share an assortment of content types and themes. Recess shares photos oftheir cans next to a text post sharing a legal message. Because the color palette is cohesive, it works.

I follow lifestyle blogger Molly Madfis both for her hilarious sense of humor, and to see how she’s going to incorporate her neutral palette into every post.

While it might be obvious when it comes to interior design posts, Molly is able to bring her neutral color scheme into photos of her son, other subjects of her photos, and her Stories Highlights covers.

Key takeaway: Tie your entire page together. When you know exactly what colors represent your brand best, incorporate them into the rest of your page. The neutral palette of @almostmakesperfect’s Instagram Stories Highlights would look out of place on another page, but blend into her overall color scheme perfectly. A minimal solid color on her Instagram Stories Highlights set the tone for her page.

Hostel and travel company Hostelworld had a challenge on their hands when it came to creating their Instagram aesthetic.

With their imagery focusing on so many different locations around the world and relying on a lot of user-generated content (UGC), they had to find a way to tie all their content together. They came up with a creative solution that many other brands can put to use: a graphic stamp overlay.

Key takeaway: Use a template or add a digital stamp or visual element to your content (use an online graphic design tool like Visme for this). Hostelworld was able to take content that didn’t have much else in common, and add a graphic element that ties it all together. A feature like this makes your content instantly recognizable to your audience, too. Think of it like your brand’s Instagram signature.

When you think of a typical protein powder, you might picture a big black tub with uber-masculine branding. Unico Nutrition is different and their Instagram page reflects that. With diversity at the forefront, Unico features lots of colorful photos, bright and joyful imagery, and a lighthearted vibe.

Key takeaway: Know your audience. Unico knows that their audience is energetic, active, and young. They developed a bright and creative Instagram aesthetic that stands out from most other nutrition supplement brands but still reflects their unique brand voice.

Bohème Goods is an online vintage shop that features used decor, clothing, and accessories. With a very established brand and color palette, owner Sarah Shabacon brings her signature style to the shop’s Instagram page.

Aside from the deliberate color scheme, the consistent editing style adds a sense of instantly-recognizable warmth to the Instagram aesthetic. Bohème Goods isn’t about being dazzlingly bright, new, and trendy, but rather a refined way of slow living. The page’s editing style reflects this.

Key takeaway: Choose the right editing style for your brand. Even though a light and whitewashed aesthetic is extremely popular amongst interior designers and lifestyle brands these days, Bohème Goods’ knows that isn’t right for their page. The slightly moodier and aged 70s look aligns with the brand better.

Flamingo is a body care company that focuses on hair removal. They have a lighthearted, fresh tone that shows up in their Instagram page.

Selling razors, waxing tools, and personal care creams, Flamingo uses their Instagram page to relate to these products. From there, they’ve developed an individual aesthetic that keeps their product top of mind, but not in-your-face. Rather than just showing countless images of razors, Flamingo uses color and themes to create cohesion.

Key takeaway: Choose a color scheme and Instagram aesthetic that’s related to your product. Flamingo’s use of water and the color blue makes sense for their brand without showing the same boring imagery over and over again. Think about how your customers use your product or service (with Flamingo, it’s in the shower or bath and then before a pool or beach) and what these situations have in common (water, towels, etc.). Once you understand the way your customer is interacting with your brand, you can figure out the colors and images that most accurately represent who you are.

How To Reformat Your Macbook Without A Password

If you want to sell your MacBook, it’s considered good practice to reformat the internal storage before reinstalling macOS. That reduces the chances of having any personal data compromised. But what if you can’t remember the password to your Mac’s user account?

Reformatting the internal storage on a Mac with a forgotten password depends on its model, and if you’ve signed into it with an Apple ID or not.

Your Mac May Be Secured With Activation Lock

If you use your MacBook with just an offline user account, you can quickly reformat it in macOS Recovery and set up macOS from scratch even if you’ve forgotten its password.

But if you’ve signed into your Mac with an Apple ID and have Find My Mac turned on, that might complicate things. macOS devices that run on Apple Silicon or contain the Apple T2 Security Chip deploy a feature called Activation Lock that prevents unauthorized access to macOS Recovery.

However, if you own the Mac, you can simply use your Apple ID’s passcode to reset the passcode or bypass the Activation Lock. If you bought or received the Mac from someone else, you must ask the person to lift the Activation Lock remotely via chúng tôi It’s impossible to reformat the Mac otherwise.

Try Lifting the Password Before You Start

Before you start, it’s always a good idea to try and reset the password to your Mac’s user account. That allows you to back up any data on your Mac, as well as sign out from your Apple ID to minimize iCloud-related complications later. Use Your Apple ID Credentials

Use a Different Administrator Account If You Managed to Lift the Password

If you managed to reset the password to your Mac, perform the following actions before formatting your Mac.

Optional: Erase All Content and Settings

If your MacBook runs on macOS Monterey or later, you have a built-in option that lets you wipe all data and settings before selling it. This is purely optional; you can still format your Mac and reinstall macOS regardless. 

How To Enter macOS Recovery

MacBooks running on Apple Silicon and Intel chipsets require different procedures to enter macOS Recovery. The following instructions assume that you haven’t reset the password to your Mac. If you have, simply insert the password whenever it’s needed.

Apple Silicon Macs

1. Shut down your MacBook.

2. Hold down the Power button to turn it back on, but do not let go of it until the Loading startup options message shows up on the screen. 

3. On the Startup Options screen, choose Options and select Continue. macOS Recovery will load momentarily.

4. If you’ve signed into your Mac with an Apple ID, select Forgot All Passwords? on the account selection screen. Then, enter your Apple ID password to bypass the Activation Lock.

5. Choose Disk Utility and select Continue.

Intel Macs

1. Shut down your MacBook.

2. Turn it back on, but immediately press and hold Command + R. Release once you see the Apple logo. macOS Recovery will show up momentarily.

3. If the Mac consists of an Apple T2 Security chip and you’ve also signed into it with an Apple ID, select Forgot All Passwords? on the account selection screen and insert your Apple ID to proceed.

4. Choose Disk Utility and select Continue.

Formatting Your MacBook

After entering macOS Recovery, you can load Disk Utility to format your MacBook.

1. Select Macintosh HD on the Disk Utility sidebar.

2. Select Erase.

3. Set Format to APFS.

4. Select Erase to format your Macbook.

5. Select Done.

Reinstalling macOS

After formatting your MacBook, you can reinstall macOS.

2. Select Reinstall macOS in macOS Recovery.

3. Select Macintosh HD as the target partition and work your way through the onscreen instructions to reinstall macOS.

Once you’ve finished installing macOS, you can set up your MacBook for personal use and restore backed-up data via Time Machine. Or, press Command + Q to leave the setup screen if you plan to sell it.

Reformatting a Mac Without a Password Can Be Complicated

Tag Heuer Unveils Android Wear

Tag Heuer, a Swiss watch maker, announced at today’s event in New York City a brand new smartwatch that its outspoken CEO Jean-Claude Biver claims has “almost the same features as an Apple Watch”. Marketed under the Connected moniker, the $1,500 titanium-clad 46mm device is powered by Google’s Android Wear software for smartwatches, delivering “micro apps” to your wrist.

It has a classic design and Tag Heuer is offering a selection of six colorful bands (black, white, green, blue, orange, yellow and red). The watch is priced at $1,500.

Based out from La Chau-de-Fonds, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking in the middle of Alpine pastures and mountains, Tag Heuer has officially become the first Swiss watch vendor to officially make a smartwatch in partnership with Google and Intel.

Inspired by its classic Carrera watch (an auto racing timepiece that dates back to 1963), the Connected features an almost unchanged titanium case and sports a sapphire crystal-coated 1.5-inch circular LTPS LCD touchscreen display with a 360-by-360 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 240 PPI.

As for the sensors, you have your gyroscope and tilt detection in the form of an accelerometer but that’s about it, there’s no heart rate monitor or other dedicated sensors on this device. It also lacks GPS, cellular connectivity and a speaker, an odd decision since there’s built-in mic.

Build quality should be super because titanium is very strong and Tag Heuer is renowned for the durability of their watch cases. The Connected is 12.8mm thick and weighs in at 52 grams. Its sandblasted bezel has an anti-fingerprint coating and the watch is IP67-certified waterproof, making it splash-proof.

Specs game

In addition to running Android Wear, the Connected uses Intel’s Atom Z34XX dual-core chip clocked at up to 1.6 GHz, with 500 megahertz “normal operation speed.” The Intel chip includes one gigabyte of RAM. A built-in 410 mAh battery should keep you going for 30 hours with normal use. The watch provides haptic feedback and packs in four gigabytes of flash storage.

On the connectivity front, the timepiece features energy-efficient Bluetooth 4.1 and 802.11 b/g/n/ Wi-Fi networking. The Connected displays the time with an accuracy of one-hundredth of a second. A range of watch faces with classic TAG Heuer dials are available through the software, with customizable complications.

The watch connects with both Android and iOS devices.

It’s interesting that Apple last year poached Tag Heuer’s Vice President of Sales and Retail, Patrick Pruniaux, who is now charged with Apple Watch positioning and marketing.

“The difference between the TAG Heuer watch and the Apple watch is very important,” said Biver in July 2014. “That one is called Apple and this one is called TAG Heuer.”

He was half-joking, of course, but there’s one crucial difference between Apple and Tag Heuer when it comes to obsolesce: After two years, Connected owners can pay another $1,500 to have their unit swapped for a mechanical TAG Heuer watch. Oh, and you get a full two year warranty coverage for your purchase.

According to Bloomberg, the case and buckle are designed and manufactured in Switzerland by the same team that makes the rest of TAG’s watches, but it’s unclear if the device bears the ‘Swiss Made’ label reserved for watches with at least 50 percent of components made within Switzerland.

Apple CEO Tim Cook opened his segment by noting that while the computer industry as a whole has declined five percent year-over-year, Macs grew by twenty percent.

The installed base of Macs has swelled to 80 million as a result.

Over 40 million copies of Mavericks have been installed sine its debut last Fall. That makes over 51 percent of installed base working on Mavericks versus just fourteen percent of Windows adoption.

There’s an all new Notification Center akin to that in iOS 7, except it can now show widgets from apps that export them.

There’s a brand new dark mode UI as well.

And, the all-new Spotlight appears anywhere on the screen under the mouse cursor and it now taps into the information both local and online, using a number of web sources, making it that much more useful.

For example, it’ll do movie showtimes, entries from Wikipedia, online maps, Bing results, restaurants and so forth

Spotlight will now collate information from a bunch of sources like before, presenting different pieces of data in a more obvious manner.

For example, searching for a contact would also produce a list of recent documents and email messages sent to Phil. Again, like before, only presented in a more visually pleasing manner.

You’ll also notice the translucent title bar of each window showing your underlying content.

Mail in Yosemite promises to be more powerful while addressing the fundamental problem with email – large attachments.

Now, with a technology called Mail Drop instead of your message bouncing off mail servers, you can send your attahcment up to five gigabytes in size encrypted via iCloud.

If your recipient has a Mac, they get the message just like before. If they are someone else, they get a secure link to an attachment where they can download the file. More on that feature in another article here.

The new Markup feature in OS X Yosemite Mail allows you to touch up image attachments without using a third-party application. For example, you could draw pretty arrows, add text, created cartoon bubbles and much more.

Sfari in Yosemite shows all your smart search suggestions and Spotlight suggestions right there in the completion menu, with previews of suggestion snippets, which is really nice. It can now Subscribe to RSS feeds that show in Shared Links and it’s better with a reworked tab view, with stacks for invidivual websites.

You can create a new Private window alongside your ordinary windows. Previously, launching a Private window would close all your existing windows.

It now supports SPDY, WebGL, HTML5 Premium Video to efficiently stream video and other modern technologies.

It’s more power efficient, too – up to two hours longer battery life for streaming from Netflix on a MacBook.

Another new Yosemite feature – Continuity.

This allows for much easier and seamless transitions between mobile and desktop devices. This extends to the new Instant Hotspot feature, Messages, phone calls and more.

For instance, when you receive a phone call, you Mac shows a notification. You can accept a call on your Mac and it can even use the computer as a speakerphone. More on Continuity is available in this post.

Registered Apple developers can download a preview version of the software today and people who are on the OS X Beta Seed Program will be able to download Yosemite betas during the summer (so, not immediately).
