Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9650 on sale Thursday for $150
Verizon has announced that the BlackBerry Bold 9650 will go on sale from Thursday June 3rd, with the QWERTY messaging phone priced at $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and assuming a new, two-year agreement. The Bold 9650 has EVDO Rev.A and 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA for global roaming, together with WiFi b/g, a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, and GPS.
There’s also a copy of VZ Navigator – including international functionality – and push-to-talk support, while memory consists of 512MB of RAM and a microSD slot (a 2GB card is included). Bluetooth 2.1, a 3.5mm headphone jack and 2.45-inch 480 x 360 display round out the key hardware features.
The Verizon Bold 9650 will show up online for purchase from tomorrow, and in stores from June 10th. A camera-free version will also be on offer, and of course you’ll need to sign up to both a voice and data plan.

Galaxy Nexus For Verizon: First Impressions
The best Android phone to date, the Galaxy Nexus dazzles with its curved display, sleek design, fast performance, and, of course, the Ice Cream Sandwich update.
If you’ve been holding out for the next great Android superphone, your time has come: The Galaxy Nexus has arrived on U.S. shores. We’re lucky enough to have one in the PCWorld offices, and so far the Galaxy Nexus looks to be worth the wait. We’ll be posting our full rated review of the Galaxy Nexus tomorrow morning, after we conduct performance tests in the PCWorld Labs.
Taking a cue from Apple products, the Galaxy Nexus comes in attractive, minimalist packaging. Other than an embossed Verizon logo, the white box is completely plain. Opening the box reveals a red interior with a USB cable, a wall charger, headphones, and the Galaxy Nexus itself.
When I picked up the Galaxy Nexus, my first thought was, “This looks like a Samsung phone, but it doesn’t feel like a Samsung phone.” The glossy display, piano-black bezel, and textured back are all characteristic of Samsung design. But unlike other Galaxy phones I’ve reviewed, the Galaxy Nexus feels high quality. At 5.1 ounces, it has a nice substantial weight to it without being too heavy. As you can see from the photos, the Galaxy Nexus has a subtle curve, which nicely contours to the hand. If you have small hands like me, however, you might find the Galaxy Nexus a bit large (it measures 5.33 by 2.67 by 0.37 inches).
The display is a roomy 4.65 inches, but really only 4 inches of that real estate is usable. The remaining 0.65-inch space is occupied by a customizable shortcut bar that appears at the bottom of the home screens as well as some other internal screens. Even so, the screen feels plenty spacious for all of your gaming, video, and other multimedia desires.
The Galaxy Nexus sports an HD Super AMOLED display. Colors pop from the display and blacks look deep, while fonts and details appear sharp. My only complaint is that whites aren’t as bright as they could be. One of my colleagues remarked that the screen had a slight yellowish tint. Still, I was pleased overall with the quality of the display.
Ice Cream Sandwich is everything I’ve wanted Android to be: intuitive and attractive, while maintaining a high level of customization and performance. Ice Cream Sandwich truly has mass appeal. Icons are sharper, menus are easier to navigate, and performing basic tasks is more efficient than in previous versions.
The photos I shot with the Galaxy Nexus’s 5-megapixel camera looked a bit flat. Colors seemed a bit washed out, and details were a little fuzzy. But even if your photos don’t come out perfect, Ice Cream Sandwich has your back with its suite of photo-editing tools. You get an array of filters (like your very own Hipstamatic app), the capability to adjust the image angle, red-eye removal, cropping capabilities, and more.
Verizon’s 4G LTE network, of course, plays a huge role in the speediness of the Galaxy Nexus. In my tests using the FCC-approved Ookla Speedtest app, the Galaxy Nexus achieved download speeds ranging from 6.69 to 12.11 megabits per second and upload speeds of 21.18 mbps. In other words, the Galaxy Nexus is blazingly fast.

Rim To Support Android Apps For Blackberry Playbook
RIM has just announced that it will be expanding its apps ecosystem to include support for Android apps in its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The tablet is scheduled to launch on April 19, and will support both BlackBerry Java and Android, along with C/C++ development, HTML 5, Flash, and AIR.
Two optional “app players” will be launched that provide application run-time environments for BlackBerry Java apps and Android 2.3 apps and allow users to download the apps to their PlayBook from BlackBerry App World. The native SDK for the tablet will also be released to enable C/C++ development on the BlackBerry Tablet OS.
New support from Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies, will allow game developers to use the cross-platform game engines to bring more games to the BlackBerry PlayBook. “Supporting a new OS can be a challenge for developers,” says Alex Caccia, President of Ideaworks Labs, “however, integration of the BlackBerry Tablet OS with the Airplay SDK makes this a non-issue. We think this is a far-sighted move by RIM: the BlackBerry PlayBook is a great device for games and applications, and combining this with content distribution via BlackBerry App World brings an exciting new ecosystem for developers.”

Support for BlackBerry Java and Android Apps

Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility. The new optional app players will be available for download from BlackBerry App World and will be placed in a secure “sandbox” on the BlackBerry PlayBook where the BlackBerry Java or Android apps can be run.
Developers will simply repackage, code sign and submit their BlackBerry Java and Android apps to BlackBerry App World. Once approved, the apps will be distributed through BlackBerry App World, providing a new opportunity for many developers to reach BlackBerry PlayBook users. Gaming Engines

Iphone On Verizon? 5 Reasons To Be Skeptical
Another day, another iPhone rumor–so is this one for real? The current buzz around the blogosphere is that Apple is preparing to offer its iPhone over Verizon’s network, therein ending its thus-far-exclusive arrangement with AT&T. Before you immediately believe the hype, allow me to provide a few reasons to think twice.
The rumor, published by Indian blog chúng tôi and attributed vaguely to “deep throats” within Apple, states that an iPhone-Verizon announcement will be made “soon.” The site also points to past job postings on Apple’s Web site for engineers specializing in EVDO and CDMA technology–two wireless broadband standards currently supported by Verizon’s network and not AT&T’s. (The standards are said to provide a far faster network than AT&T’s EDGE-based platform.)
“While EVDO could cover a wide range of 3G skills, it is more likely that Apple is specifically after the Verizon Wireless standard,” chúng tôi infers.
The report goes on to note past rumors that AT&T has been dissatisfied with the reach of its iPhone coverage on AT&T’s network alone, suggesting that “Steve Jobs misjudged [AT&T’s] control over the U.S. wireless market” and that Apple may be “hammering out a more open deal” while Jobs is away from the office on medical leave.
Reality Check, Aisle Two…
Right now, the rumor is no more than speculation–and, as anyone who follows iPhone news knows, there’s always plenty of that to go around. Apple, of course, is staying mum on the matter (representatives weren’t immediately available to answer our questions), but here are five reasons for some healthy skepticism about this latest scuttlebutt:
Yessir, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about an iPhone-Verizon deal. Back in September, Apple blog chúng tôi suggested agreements between the two companies would be finalized by the end of 2008. (At least one tech publication is already distancing itself from this week’s report because of that.) The site said an announcement could come as early as MacWorld 2009. To be fair, it also said the deal could be revealed anytime during the year, so interpret as you wish.
While the details have varied over time, most news outlets have put AT&T’s exclusivity deal with Apple at a minimum of two years. This past July, USA Today said AT&T signed an extension that gave it exclusive distribution rights through 2010, modifying the original contract that provided Apple the option of bringing in other carriers in 2009.
Jobs may be off the clock right now, but one has to question whether he would be completely uninvolved in such a major decision–and whether his staff, knowing his plans to return within a matter of months, would even consider doing something he is said to oppose.

In the iPhone’s infancy, Verizon turned down a deal for the smartphone–apparently because Apple was “demanding control of marketing, pricing,” and other considerations. Execs even later stated they were “relieved” they hadn’t accepted the offer. Given the iPhone’s success, is Apple likely to loosen the reins and ease those concerns now?
With all of that said, of course, things do change–and hey, sometimes rumors do turn true. (Like with the long-discussed $99 iPhone deal. Sort of.) All I’m saying is that we have to keep things in perspective and look at the big picture. There are plenty of holes in the Verizon deal theory, and even if there weren’t, you can’t be certain of anything with Apple until it’s made official.
