Although it hasn’t been long after the emergence of 5G, technology companies are already preemptively preparing themselves for the following generation of wireless technology, namely 6G. What exactly does this entail? How will it work?
A ClarificationBefore we get to the juicy bit, we have to clarify something: at the time of writing, 6G is nowhere close to being properly tested or implemented. Reports that China launched the “first 6G satellite” in November 2023 are not false but have a tendency to sensationalize the whole ordeal slightly.
Yes, China launched a terahertz-capable testbed satellite into space, but this was only testing a part of 6G technology.
What Is 6G?If it isn’t already obvious, 6G is the sixth generation of wireless communication technology. It’s not set in stone yet, but the standard promises to establish a more ubiquitous and reliable Internet presence across all cellular networks. To get more into the nitty gritty, we’ll have to explain what makes this standard different from its more well-known predecessors.
We call this new standard “6G” and not “faster 5G” or “enhanced 5G” because there’s a difference in how each standard is applied by hardware manufacturers. A 6G transceiver box that’s providing communications services to another device won’t have enough similarities in its internals to participate in the same generation as its predecessor.
Put simply, the requirements that 6G is supposed to meet will need manufacturers to completely redesign their products’ communications suites to work with those parameters. This was the same reason 5G became something “different” rather than just being considered an enhanced version of 4G LTE.
What 6G PromisesAt this point, no standard has fully been established, but telecom companies around the world are already speculating at what 6G could deliver. At the moment, it looks like this technology could deliver bandwidth of around 95 Gbits/second, providing a powerful platform for a multitude of devices to transmit and receive data with low latency and high reliability.
In essence, 6G looks to build on top of the powerful capabilities that 5G already delivers for the “Internet of things” ecosystem. People casually watching YouTube while taking a stroll on the sidewalk won’t notice much of a difference since older generations of communications tech already covers the bandwidth necessary for this.
The real difference will come when there’s enormous potential for network congestion in an area. Bigger pipes make large volumes of water flow more smoothly!
In short, since 5G (and to a major extent, even 4G LTE) covers the vast majority of mobile needs in our current society, 6G is just telecom operators anticipating new developments in consumer and business technology that will require even more room to breathe.
It’s Not Just the Hardware!Besides changing the way transceiver boxes are manufactured, 6G will also change the entire infrastructure of a local cellular network. As a rule, an increase in transmission rate requires a tighter distribution of cells.
In the end, all of this fancy talk about new standards boils down to different ways of using the radio spectrum to transform waves into data and vice versa. Each new generation uses a higher frequency of the spectrum while sacrificing wavelength. Having to make this sacrifice means that the cellular carrier will have to deal with range issues.
Each generation of cellular technology using shorter-wavelength signals forces both manufacturers and network providers to have to deal with new infrastructure challenges. 6G is no different.
It’s not just the devices that will have to change – it’s everything. And we’re not even done yet with 5G.
Trouble in ParadiseTo truly understand the scale of what strains our cellular networks are being put under, we’ll have to walk back one step and compare 5G to 4G.
A typical 4G LTE network transceiver can serve its local cell up to about 10 miles. This means that if you’re setting up a network with the intention of keeping your customers under a seamless 4G “bubble,” you would have to make sure that you set it up in such a way that no one is more than 10 miles from one of your powerful antennas.
If you want to scale up your network to 5G, you would have to shrink those 10 miles to 1,000 feet with the same amount of power. It’s not impossible, but the proposition becomes more expensive and invasive on existing city infrastructure.
6G will have a lot of trouble getting out of the drawing board and into practical application if it’s going to be blanketing entire areas of a city with transceivers.
The Road AheadWhile it’s clear that there are several challenges for 6G technology to overcome, not the least of which is the cumbersome infrastructure needed to get it up and running, it’s not too far-fetched to believe that telecom providers will gear up to compete for being the first to implement it in many communities.
All signs point to 6G becoming a reality in 2030, but speculation can only take us as far as our imagination can. The reality is that it will be quite a while before the technology is truly tested and implemented at an appropriate scale for consumption. In the meantime, 5G still has a long way to go before it becomes as ubiquitous as its predecessor.
For the moment, perhaps it is better for you to worry about what the various 5G icons on an iPhone mean and when 5G will reach your area rather than concerning yourself with 6G.

How to sign up for a new Slack WorkspaceSigning up for a new workspace is easy, and free. You just need to follow a few simple steps:

As its name implies, the new Walkie Talkie function lets users on Microsoft Teams connect with their team members by communicating with them in real-time using their voice. Users who are connected to Walkie Talkie in a channel can listen to each other speak in push-to-talk format, one at a time. This way, only one person can get the attention when they’re speaking and won’t be interrupted by others.
Microsoft is positioning this feature for frontline workers who, according to them, contribute to 80% of the world’s workforce. The company says Walkie Talkie can make communications within organizations more seamless for frontline workers dealing directly with end-users. This can come in handy for coworkers who need immediate assistance on an important topic, coordinate with superiors, contact the security team, and more.
This also negates the need for workers to carry around bulky radios to use push-to-talk (PTT) communication as they can just connect their phones to the internet and start using Walkie Talkie directly on Microsoft Teams.

How does Walkie Talkie work on Microsoft Teams?
Just like conventional walkie-talkies, you can tap and hold on a large size Talk button inside a channel when you wish to give your input on an ongoing matter. Releasing the Talk button will mute your microphone and allow others room to speak.
The new feature is available as an app that can be added to your Microsoft Teams organizations and can be used directly inside any channel without needing to start a meeting. All you need is an active connection to the internet and you’re all set to use Walkie Talkie inside the app.
When someone is speaking during a Walkie Talkie session, no one else can interrupt them in midst of their session. If you wish to speak in this channel, you will have to wait for them to lift up their finger away from the Talk button to be able to activate your microphone.
Who can use Walkie Talkie on MS Teams?
The new Walkie Teams feature inside Microsoft Teams is designed primarily for frontline workers of an organization who may want the help of others employees when dealing with end-users on a daily basis. The feature is thus only available for users and organizations who are subscribed to Microsoft 365 for frontline workers.
This means you can use the Walkie Talkie feature inside the Teams app on Android and iOS as long as you’re subscribed to any one of these plans – Microsoft 365 F1, Office 365 F3, or Microsoft 365 F3. If you haven’t yet subscribed to these plans, you can check out the new Walkie Talkie app for as low as $2.25 per user per month by activating the Microsoft 365 F1-paid license from this link.
Besides this, you also need to note that Walkie Talkie can be employed only inside channels and won’t be available for use inside one-on-one chats. When you’re using the feature with one channel, you won’t be able to use it on another one at the same time.
How to enable Walkie Talkie on Microsoft Teams
Walkie Talkie is an app that can be installed inside your Microsoft Teams account/org but this app isn’t pre-installed and won’t be available when searching for apps to install from the Teams home screen normally. In order to use Walkie Talkie, the administrator of your organization should first add the app to the App Setup Policy from your Teams Admin Center.
That’s it. Walkie Talkie should be available inside Microsoft Teams within 48 hours.
How to use Walkie Talkie on Microsoft Teams
When your Teams admin adds Walkie Talkie to your organization, you can start using it but before you do, you need to make sure that the Microsoft Teams app on your Android or iOS device has been updated to its latest version from Google lay Store or App Store.
Open Walkie Talkie inside MS Teams
You should now see the Walkie Talkie screen load up inside Microsoft Teams. Inside this screen, tap on Channel at the top left corner.
In the list that appears, select the team and channel you wish to start push-to-talk with.
After you select a channel, tap on Connect at the bottom of the screen.
Your device is now connected to the selected channel and you’ll be able to hear all the conversations taking place inside it actively. When connected, you should see a large size microphone icon at the center.
Start speaking with Walkie Talkie
To speak or start push-to-talk from your end, tap and hold on the microphone icon that Microsoft calls the Talk button.
When you’re the one who’s speaking inside the channel, you should see a ‘Live’ label appear above the Talk button and this button itself will be highlighted with a circle around it. You need to keep your finger pressed on this Talk button for as long as you want to speak.
When you’re done talking, release your finger from the Talk button to switch it off. Now, others in the same channel can start speaking by tapping and holding the Talk button on their devices.
When someone else starts speaking in the channel, their name and account picture should appear at the center instead of the Talk button at the center of the screen.
View who’s listening on Walkie Talkie
If you just started a Walkie Talkie session and nobody else has logged into it, you will see the “No one else is connected” message above the Talk button.
When you’re connected to a channel for a Walkie Talkie session, you can check out how many people are connected to this session by looking for a number adjacent to the Participants icon at the top right corner. This number will tell that these many people are currently connected to the channel apart from yourself.
To see who all can actively hear the conversation, tap on this Participants icon.
Pin Walkie Talkie to your Teams home screen
By default, when Walkie Talkie is added to your Teams org, it should be accessible inside the More tab at the bottom right corner of the screen. If you wish to use Walkie Talkie more often, you can pin it to the Teams’ navigation bar at the bottom for quick access. To do that, open the Teams app and tap on the More tab at the bottom right corner.
When the More tab expands, tap on Reorder.
You’ll now be taken to the Edit navigation screen and you should see the Walkie Talkie app appear under ‘More’. To pin Walkie Talkie to the Teams navigation bar, tap and hold the Hamburger menu adjacent to Walkie Talkie and drag it upwards beyond the More section.
Note: You can only have up to 5 active tabs on the Teams navigation bar. So, if you already have 5 tabs on it, moving the Walkie Talkie app to the nav bar will delete a tab with the least priority and move it to the ‘More’ section.
After you move Walkie Talkie to your desired location, tap on Done at the top right corner.
You should now see the Walkie Talkie tab on the Teams app’s Home Screen from where you can quickly access it in the future.
Disconnect from a channel’s Walkie Talkie
When you’re done communicating via voice inside a channel, you can stop Walkie Talkie or leave it by tapping on the Disconnect button at the bottom of the Walkie Talkie screen.
The Walkie Talkie screen will now minimize and neither you nor others will be able to communicate with each other anymore.
Do you need your phone unlocked at all times for Walkie Talkie?
Contrary to what you may think, you don’t need to have your iOS or Android phone unlocked and open to listen to others talk on Walkie Talkie. As long as your device is connected to the internet and you’re connected to a specific channel, you can listen to others speak on Walkie Talkie, even if you’re not using your phone.

To simplify things, here’s a breakdown of exactly what resolution is and the factors impacting its effectiveness — plus a few examples of how it works in real life. In the end, you’ll have a better sense for which resolution you’ll need for your next project.
What is resolution?It all comes down to pixels. Generally speaking, resolution is a measurement of how many pixels are packed into a given display area. Resolution is typically denoted in a width x height format. You might be familiar with some of these common resolutions:
Full HD = 1920 pixels x 1080 pixels
4K = 3840 pixels x 2160 pixels
8K = 7680 pixels x 4320 pixels
Pixels are the building blocks of digital images; they combine to form images like bricks combine to form a wall. And the more pixels you have in a given space, the higher fidelity those images can be.
Resolution and pixel pitch
Here’s where things get a bit trickier. Resolution is not only a function of how many pixels are housed in a given display space, but also how densely those pixels are packed together. This brings us to pixel pitch, which is the distance between each pixel.
Typically measured in millimeters (16mm on the high end, 0.5mm on the low end), the lower the pixel pitch, the more tightly packed the pixels — and the crisper the image. As you might imagine, the higher the pixel pitch, the bigger the display needs to be in order to reach a target resolution. In fact, it’s the combination of pixel pitch and the size of the display that determines the resolution itself.
The higher the pixel pitch, the greater the cost. That’s because as pixel pitch increases, so too does the number of LEDs that need to be mounted on a given display module. A significant part of the cost of building a display is in the manufacturing of these modules.
Which resolution is right for you?For use cases where your viewer will be up close to a display — environments like lobby walls, conference rooms and restaurants — you’ll need higher resolution to deliver a crisp, clear picture, even when they’re standing right in front of your display. The good news is, in these instances, you can use a much smaller display than you’d need in an outdoor environment.
On the other hand, for outdoor applications like a highway billboard, you won’t necessarily need the pixels to be as dense — because you’re operating with a larger viewing distance. According to the experts at Samsung, a good rule of thumb for considering pitch and viewing distance is that 1mm in pitch equals 8 feet of viewing distance.
Three types of resolution — and their use casesNow that we’ve covered the nuts and bolts of resolution, let’s take a look at the three main categories of resolution use cases — and a real example from each.
Communication display
At about 48 to 60 pixels tall, you’ve got enough resolution to display a text-based message to your audience. Whether that’s “Free Oil Change” or “25 percent off, today only,” words are usually all you need to captivate passersby and get them to take action.
Graphic display
Moving up to 61 to 100 pixels tall puts you in a new category — one where displaying visual imagery becomes possible. Icons, logos, 3D text and basic graphic representations of the products and services you’re promoting are all fair game.
Video display
Once you’re above 100 pixels tall, you’re in high-resolution video display territory. The content you can display here is more akin to what you’d see on your favorite streaming service. You can show video or premium images that look vivid and appealing.
