At the ‘Time Flies’ event, Apple announced two new Apple Watch models – Series 6 and SE. One big highlight was a new feature in watchOS 7 called Family Setup. You can now set up the Apple Watch of family members from your iPhone. Here’s how to do this and all the other related information you need to know!

What is Apple Watch Family Setup?

With Family Setup, now a parent or guardian can set up Apple Watch for kids or older people who do not have their own iPhones. The parent can use their iPhone to manage the kids’ Apple Watch.

Once set up, kids can use the Apple Watch freely without needing an iPhone. They can go to school, sports practice, picnic, and anywhere without any concern, and the parent can know about the whereabouts.

Set Schooltime Schedule

During School-time, the kid’s Apple Watch shows a yellow circle on the watch face. This helps the teachers in the classroom (or parent tutoring at home) easily recognize the apps’ whose access is restricted, plus Do Not Disturb can be enabled on the kid’s Apple Watch.

Apple Cash Family

How to Set up an Apple Watch for a Family Member

Before You Begin:

Make sure the watch is running watchOS 7, and the iPhone is running iOS 14.

Turn ON Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the iPhone.

Erase the Apple Watch if it isn’t new.

Ensure you have an Apple ID for you (parent or guardian) and one for the kid or older person whose watch you are setting.

Family Sharing must be set up.

Wear the Apple Watch and switch it ON by pressing and holding the Side button.

Bring the watch near the iPhone. Wait for a moment, and you should see “Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch” on the iPhone screen. Tap on Continue. After this, tap on Set Up for a Family Member → Continue. In case you do not see this, open the Watch app on iPhone → All Watches from the top right → Pair New Watch.

Point the iPhone over the animation on the Apple Watch screen. You will see a message that says the Apple Watch is successfully paired.

Agree to the terms and conditions (if you do), select text size, and set a passcode for the Apple Watch.

Select a family member from the screen or tap on Add New Family Member. Now, enter the kid’s (or the family member’s) Apple ID and proceed. It is a good idea to tap on Turn on Ask to Buy. (more about it above)

Set up cellular (if the carrier supports) and Wi-Fi on the Apple Watch. After this, you may turn on other options like location, Siri, Apple Cash Family, Health data, etc. You can also set up Schooltime and shared contacts. Once you are done, tap on OK. Now, the kid can start using the Apple Watch.

Family Setup Compatible Apple Watch and iPhone

Family Setup is available on cellular models of Apple Watch Series 4 and later running watchOS 7. You can pair the watch with iPhone 6s and later running iOS 14.

Note: Apple says that ‘a cellular plan isn’t required to set up an Apple Watch for a family member, but is necessary for some features.’

Regions and Carriers That Support Family Setup

At launch, 18 carriers in 12 countries and regions support Family Setup. This is a carrier support-oriented feature (separate phone number, data plan, etc.) Thus, in the coming months, it will expand to other regions and carriers as well. Views On Family Setup

In my opinion, this is a great feature. Now, you can give the kid an affordable Apple Watch SE or your old Series 5, and they get the power to stay safely connected to people that matter.

One thing that I feel strange is that Apple discontinued Series 4 and 5 but kept Series 3. And unfortunately, Family Setup requires Series 4 and above. So, that’s a bummer!

Now, instead of giving a smartphone, it is convenient to have a powerful tiny computer on the child’s wrist (that they won’t misplace) when on baseball practice or friend’s house. Likewise, it lets keep track of older people more conveniently.

Overall I think it’s a smart move to get Apple Watch to more people in an affordable way!

The idea is that if you’re streaming video at the same time as checking Facebook or Instagram, SmartByte will give more bandwidth to video since ordinary web apps don’t require as much. That was the theory, anyway.

Sometimes SmartByte is only installed as a service and driver. However, if you have an Dell Inspiron, G3, G5, or G7 you might have the SmartByte app or the Dell Cinemastream app. Both use the SmartByte driver and service.

What Else Does SmartByte Affect?

If slower Wi-Fi speeds don’t matter to you, SmartByte has also caused problems by dropping User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets in Windows 11, version 21H2, according to Microsoft. They say it was fixed by the KB5006674 update in October, 2023, so check if you have that.

Can I Update SmartByte to Fix It?

There are Dell Knowledge Base articles as new as January 2023 on how to troubleshoot network performance issues, and they point to SmartByte. So no, updating SmartByte doesn’t necessarily fix the slow speed issue.

How Do I Fix the SmartByte Issue?

If the second one is better, then SmartBytes was a problem. If the second one is the same or worse, then something else is causing the slowdown. You’ll need to find out why your download speed is slow.

How to Disable SmartByte

Why would we disable SmartByte instead of uninstalling it completely? It’s possible that SmartByte works for you under certain circumstances. Maybe you find that Zoom meetings do run better with SmartByte, but streaming 4K video is made worse by it. Or maybe you just want to make sure that SmartByte is the real cause of your Wi-Fi speed issues.

Select the Start menu and search for Services. Open Services when you find it.

Change the Startup type from Automatic to Disabled. Then select the Stop button in the Service status area, if it isn’t already stopped. Select OK to close the window.

The SmartByte service’s status is now cleared and the Startup Type is Disabled.

Check your internet speed and compare it to before. If it’s higher, there’s a good chance that SmartByte is the issue. You may want to completely uninstall SmartByte.

How to Uninstall SmartByte: Apps & Features Method

Did disabling SmartByte improve your download speeds? If it did, consider uninstalling SmartByte. It’s simple.

In the Apps & Features window, start typing smartbytein the search field. Any apps that use SmartBytes will show as results. In this case, it’s SmartByte Drivers and Services and the SmartByte app. You may also see the CinemaStream app.

Another alert may show a warning that the computer will require a reboot after the uninstall. Select OK to continue and when the uninstall is complete, restart the computer.

How to Uninstall SmartByte: Control Panel Method

This method of uninstalling SmartByte is more for the old-school techy. Some of us still do everything through the Control Panel

Select the Start menu and start typing control to find the Control Panel. Once found, open it.

In the Control Panel, select the Programs and Features option.

In the Programs and Features window, find and select SmartByte Drivers and Services, then select Uninstall.

A prompt will ask you if you’re sure you want to uninstall SmartByte Drivers and Services. Select Yes.

The uninstallation begins and it’s quick.

Once the progress bar window disappears, SmartByte Drivers and Services is uninstalled. Verify this by noticing it’s no longer in the list of programs in the Programs and Features window. It’s not listed in Services either.

Does Removing SmartByte Cause Other Problems?

SmartByte consists of a service and a driver, and you know that getting rid of services and drivers can cause problems. In this case, no, it won’t cause any problems. SmartByte is just a utility. Below you’ll see that all our network drivers are still there. Yours may look a bit different.

The drivers for your Wi-Fi and everything else will remain intact and there will be no harm done. In fact, some users have reported that other problems with their Dell PC were resolved. People’s issues with VPNs, FTP, and Windows crashes stopped. However, if you think removing SmartByte caused problems, you can reinstall it.

How to sign up for a new Slack Workspace

Signing up for a new workspace is easy, and free. You just need to follow a few simple steps:

One of the best things about Slack is that tons of services play nicely with it. Some apps integrate with services like Asana for team management, Google Calendar for shared calendars, Airtable for data management, Zoom for video calls, and, well, you get the idea. That’s just scratching the surface, as there are over 2,400 apps in the Slack App directory.

What Is 6G And How Does It Work?

Although it hasn’t been long after the emergence of 5G, technology companies are already preemptively preparing themselves for the following generation of wireless technology, namely 6G. What exactly does this entail? How will it work?

A Clarification

Before we get to the juicy bit, we have to clarify something: at the time of writing, 6G is nowhere close to being properly tested or implemented. Reports that China launched the “first 6G satellite” in November 2023 are not false but have a tendency to sensationalize the whole ordeal slightly.

Yes, China launched a terahertz-capable testbed satellite into space, but this was only testing a part of 6G technology.

What Is 6G?

If it isn’t already obvious, 6G is the sixth generation of wireless communication technology. It’s not set in stone yet, but the standard promises to establish a more ubiquitous and reliable Internet presence across all cellular networks. To get more into the nitty gritty, we’ll have to explain what makes this standard different from its more well-known predecessors.

We call this new standard “6G” and not “faster 5G” or “enhanced 5G” because there’s a difference in how each standard is applied by hardware manufacturers. A 6G transceiver box that’s providing communications services to another device won’t have enough similarities in its internals to participate in the same generation as its predecessor.

Put simply, the requirements that 6G is supposed to meet will need manufacturers to completely redesign their products’ communications suites to work with those parameters. This was the same reason 5G became something “different” rather than just being considered an enhanced version of 4G LTE.

What 6G Promises

At this point, no standard has fully been established, but telecom companies around the world are already speculating at what 6G could deliver. At the moment, it looks like this technology could deliver bandwidth of around 95 Gbits/second, providing a powerful platform for a multitude of devices to transmit and receive data with low latency and high reliability.

In essence, 6G looks to build on top of the powerful capabilities that 5G already delivers for the “Internet of things” ecosystem. People casually watching YouTube while taking a stroll on the sidewalk won’t notice much of a difference since older generations of communications tech already covers the bandwidth necessary for this.

The real difference will come when there’s enormous potential for network congestion in an area. Bigger pipes make large volumes of water flow more smoothly!

In short, since 5G (and to a major extent, even 4G LTE) covers the vast majority of mobile needs in our current society, 6G is just telecom operators anticipating new developments in consumer and business technology that will require even more room to breathe.

It’s Not Just the Hardware!

Besides changing the way transceiver boxes are manufactured, 6G will also change the entire infrastructure of a local cellular network. As a rule, an increase in transmission rate requires a tighter distribution of cells.

In the end, all of this fancy talk about new standards boils down to different ways of using the radio spectrum to transform waves into data and vice versa. Each new generation uses a higher frequency of the spectrum while sacrificing wavelength. Having to make this sacrifice means that the cellular carrier will have to deal with range issues.

Each generation of cellular technology using shorter-wavelength signals forces both manufacturers and network providers to have to deal with new infrastructure challenges. 6G is no different.

It’s not just the devices that will have to change – it’s everything. And we’re not even done yet with 5G.

Trouble in Paradise

To truly understand the scale of what strains our cellular networks are being put under, we’ll have to walk back one step and compare 5G to 4G.

A typical 4G LTE network transceiver can serve its local cell up to about 10 miles. This means that if you’re setting up a network with the intention of keeping your customers under a seamless 4G “bubble,” you would have to make sure that you set it up in such a way that no one is more than 10 miles from one of your powerful antennas.

If you want to scale up your network to 5G, you would have to shrink those 10 miles to 1,000 feet with the same amount of power. It’s not impossible, but the proposition becomes more expensive and invasive on existing city infrastructure.

6G will have a lot of trouble getting out of the drawing board and into practical application if it’s going to be blanketing entire areas of a city with transceivers.

The Road Ahead

While it’s clear that there are several challenges for 6G technology to overcome, not the least of which is the cumbersome infrastructure needed to get it up and running, it’s not too far-fetched to believe that telecom providers will gear up to compete for being the first to implement it in many communities.

All signs point to 6G becoming a reality in 2030, but speculation can only take us as far as our imagination can. The reality is that it will be quite a while before the technology is truly tested and implemented at an appropriate scale for consumption. In the meantime, 5G still has a long way to go before it becomes as ubiquitous as its predecessor.

For the moment, perhaps it is better for you to worry about what the various 5G icons on an iPhone mean and when 5G will reach your area rather than concerning yourself with 6G.
