What Is UAC?

Such changes can be initiated by users, viruses, malware, or applications. But if the administrator doesn’t approve the changes, they won’t be executed.

Among the changes that require administrative privileges include:

Each time you run a desktop app that requires admin permissions, the UAC pops up. You’ll also see it when you want to change important system settings that require admin approval.

Any users on your network can sign into their computers using a standard user account, but any processes they launch will be performed using access rights granted to a standard user.

For example, any apps started using Windows Explorer will run with standard user level permissions. This includes apps included with Windows 10 itself.

UAC Slider Levels in Windows 10 and What They Mean

In Windows Vista, there were only two UAC options: On or Off. In Windows 10 however, there are four UAC levels to choose from:

Always Notify: Notifies you before users and apps make changes that require admin permissions. It also freezes other tasks until you respond, and is recommended if you often visit unfamiliar websites or install new software.

Notify me only when programs/apps try to make changes to my computer: Notifies you when programs try to make changes to your computer or install software. This level also freezes other tasks until you respond, but it won’t notify you when you make changes to Windows settings.

How to Disable UAC in Windows 10

Note: We don’t recommend disabling UAC on your computer as doing this makes it easier for malicious programs to infect and manage your computer. If there are apps that keep triggering UAC, use Windows Task Scheduler to run those apps without admin rights and UAC prompts first, instead of disabling UAC altogether.

If you still want to disable UAC, you can do it via Control Panel, Group Policy, Registry Editor, or using a Command Line.

          What is USB Selective Suspend?

If your computer runs on battery power, these external devices will deplete your battery faster than usual. That’s why Windows temporarily suspends idle USB devices to conserve battery power.

          Say, for example, there’s a USB fingerprint reader connected to your computer, and you haven’t used it for over an hour. Windows may suspend the device and put it in a “low power state” where it consumes very little battery power. Think of it as Windows hibernating or putting your USB device to sleep. If you have several devices connected to your PC, Windows will only suspend the idle USB devices and ports.

Say, for instance, your USB drive stopped showing up in the File Explorer. Or, your Windows PC won’t detect a USB keyboard/mouse.

          How to Disable USB Selective Suspend on Windows 10

          Disabling USB selective suspend is an effective troubleshooting solution that can resolve the mentioned USB-related issues. There are always several ways to get this done.

          In the sections below, we’ll show you how to disable USB selective suspend from the Control Panel, Device Manager, or by using the Command Prompt.

          Disable USB Selective Suspend From the Control Panel

          One way to prevent your PC from temporarily suspending USB devices is to edit the Windows power settings. Follow the steps below for direction.

          1. Launch the Windows Control Panel and set the “View by” option to Category.

          2. Open the System and Security menu and select Power Options.

          3. Select the Change plan settings option next to your current power plan — Balanced or Power Saver or High Performance.

          If you’re using a laptop or tablet, you’ll find two options in the USB selective suspend settings: “On Battery” and “Plugged In.” Ideally, you’d only want to enable the feature when your PC is on battery power—since USB selective suspend is designed to extend battery life.           Once chkdsk is running, it’s not recommended to interrupt it. Even though, it’ll not bring any harm to your data if you interrupt the process, yet it’s better to let chkdsk complete its job.

          Note that, in order to run chkdsk, you must run the Command Prompt as an administrator. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to execute this command.

          Syntax of CHKDSK

          Below is the complete syntax of chkdsk command in Windows 11. However, all the parameters are optional and you can simply execute the chkdsk command without any other parameter to scan your disk.

          chkdsk /f /v /r /x /i /c /b [drive name]: [path]

          Parameters have different uses. You will be using them according to the situation. The following table shows the complete list of parameters that you can use with chkdsk command along with their uses.

It performs a less powerful scan of index entries thus completing the scan quickly./cIt is also used with NTFS. And reduces the scan time, as it does scan the cycles in the folder structure./b/b is also limited with NTFS only. The job of /b is to locate and remove bad clusters from the drives. After removing bad clusters it again scans the free clusters to check errors. /b also has all the functionalities of /r.Drive nameSpecify the drive letter that you are interested in scanning. Remember, the drive letter is followed by a colon like C: or D: without any space.PathThe path is only used with FAT and FAT32. If you are interested to scan a specific file or set of files, you have to add the path here. Else, you can skip this part. To separate file names, you can use ? and * wildcard characters.

          Running CHKDSK in Windows 11

          To execute chkdsk in Windows 11, simply follow the given instructions.

          Open Command Prompt as Admin

          Type the following command. This is just an example and you can change the parameters according to your situation.

          chkdsk /f c:

          Run chkdsk with Parameters

          You may receive the following message after hitting the return key “Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)”. If you do see such a message, then hit the Y button and restart your computer. The scan will automatically begin once the system restarts.

Starting with Windows XP SP2, Autoplay is enabled for removable drives as well, including Zip drives and some USB mass storage devices. If you enable this policy setting, Autoplay is disabled on CD-ROM and removable media drives, or disabled on all drives. This policy setting disables Autoplay on additional types of drives. You cannot use this setting to enable Autoplay on drives on which it is disabled by default. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, AutoPlay is enabled.

          Windows Update Delivery Optimization (WUDO) is designed to help Windows users get the Windows store apps and other Windows updates more quickly and efficiently – even if you have an unreliable Internet connection.

          The WUDO feature is enabled by default in all Windows 10 systems except the Enterprise versions. When enabled, all the Windows updates are shared among all the PCs in the same network. This helps save your Internet bandwidth, as every PC in your network will be sharing the updates among them rather than downloading the updates separately from Microsoft servers.

          Along with sharing and downloading the updates and apps over the local networks, the WUDO feature also shares them with other PCs over the Internet. Simply put, this new feature is much like a torrent and uses your bandwidth to share the updates with other PCs over the Internet.

          According to Microsoft, the WUDO feature has very little impact on your Internet connection. Moreover, when downloading the Windows updates from other PCs, Windows checks for the integrity of those files as if they are downloaded directly from the Microsoft servers. If there are any changes or inconsistencies in the files, Windows stops downloading from the target PC and checks for another source, be it another PC on the Internet or the Microsoft server.

          This is all good and well, but if you are on a limited or metered Internet connection, then keeping this feature enabled may not be an option for you unless you want to pay hefty bills in the name of the Internet. So it is a good thing to either configure or disable the feature so that it won’t waste your bandwidth.

          Customize or Disable the WUDO Feature

          As I said before, the WUDO feature is enabled by default and is also configured to download and share updates with PCs on the local network and on the Internet.

          If you want to completely disable the WUDO feature, toggle the button to “Off,” and you are good to go.

          However, if you just want to share the updates among the PCs in your local network, then select the “PCs on my local network” option.

          This action ensures that the updates are only shared with PCs on your local network and not with PCs on the internet.

          Curate: Often the best micro content is your short form review or share of somebody else’s stuff that might be useful to your audience, and it doesn’t get more social than that. That enables your appeal and reach to grow naturally through a trusted network.

          Call to action: Social media is business. What are you drawing your prospects to do? It’s not that every tweet, vine, Facebook status update or Instagram requires a link back or offer, it really doesn’t and mustn’t, but once in a while deliver the ask. And always make your profile useful to translate who your are and what you do so that the inquisitive can easily learn more and visit your website.
