Suggested December 2023 Why And How To Turn Off Background App Refresh On Iphone & Ipad

You can turn off Background App Refresh on your iPhone or iPad to save cellular data and extend the battery life.

In this tutorial, we’ll tell you what Background App Refresh is and how to disable it for all apps or only selected apps. Plus, we’ll show you how to turn it off only for cellular data or for both cellular data and Wi-Fi.

What is Background App Refresh on iPhone and iPad?

Background App Refresh on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch is designed to permit apps to check for new content in an intelligent and controlled manner, even when they’re not running or showing on the screen.

With background fetching, your favorite apps are always fresh and ready for the next launch with up-to-date content. For instance, Twitter may fetch new tweets in the background; Facebook Messenger may load new messages and their attachments so that they’re there as soon as you launch the app; a cloud storage app may retrieve newly uploaded files, etc. That way, apps launch faster and open with the freshest content.

Why should you disable Background App Refresh on iPhone and iPad?

With Background App Refresh enabled, apps are permitted to refresh content all the time constantly. This uses the internet and depletes the battery. Therefore, to save cellular data and extend your battery backup, you can turn off Background App Refresh on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Note: Background App Refresh is automatically paused temporarily as long as your iPhone or iPad is in Low Power Mode.

How to turn off Background App Refresh on iPhone and iPad For all apps

Open the Settings app and go to General.

Tap Background App Refresh.

Tap Background App Refresh once again. From here, select:

Off: To disable background content fetching for all apps and on both Wi-Fi and cellular data.

Wi-Fi: If you want Background App Refresh to happen only on Wi-Fi, tap Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi & Cellular Data: Finally, if you want to keep Background App Refresh enabled for all apps on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, go ahead and select Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.

For selected apps

As mentioned, Background App Refresh saves data and battery. Therefore, you’ll be inclined to turn it off completely. However, with some apps like WhatsApp, this can cause a problem and lead to delayed notifications for new messages. WhatsApp even goes a step further and asks you to turn on Background App Refresh if you turn it off.

Similarly, at times, some widgets, like Weather, may not show the updated information if Background App Refresh is off.

Therefore, you can choose to turn off Background App Refresh for all apps except a few, like WhatsApp and Weather. I have done this on my iPhone. Here’s how:

Make sure it says On or Wi-Fi next to Background App Refresh. If it’s Off, tap it and choose Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data. What these do is already explained in the above heading.

Scroll down the list of apps and turn off the switch for those apps for which you want to disable Background App Refresh.

I know many users who leave it off all the time. Are you among that group, and why?

Iphone Turning Itself Off And Won’t Turn Back On? Try These 8 Fixes

Does your iPhone switch off randomly even if it has sufficient battery left, and then refuse to turn back on? Follow along as we share why this happens and how to fix an iPhone that keeps shutting down on its own.

Why does your iPhone shut down randomly?

Your iPhone will shut down randomly due to high temperature, software bugs, app crashes, water damage, or glitches picked up during regular use. Secondly, your old iPhone can also keep turning off due to poor battery health. You can check the battery health of your iPhone and understand more here.

Backstory

During an episode of our podcast, I mentioned that I had overslept that morning due to my iPhone 11 Pro turning itself off overnight. It was positioned perfectly on a wireless charger, with plenty of battery left from the day before, and it had no water damage or any other notable hardware concerns. It simply turned itself off and wouldn’t turn back on.

As it turns out, this is just one of those things that sometimes happens to iPhone models X and newer. Luckily, after some stringent Googling, I could work out an easy fix for it. So I thought it would be helpful if I shared that fix (and some more) in case you’re ever unlucky enough to come across this weird bug.

How to fix an iPhone that won’t turn back on

Force restart your iPhone

Once you’ve confirmed your iPhone has at least some battery, and it won’t turn on with a simple press of the power button, go ahead and perform a force restart. We have a dedicated tutorial for all devices. If you have iPhone 8, X, or later, we have recapped the steps below:

Press the volume up button and release it quickly. This is more of a tap than a press-and-hold.

Do the same thing with the volume down button. Again, it’s just a quick press.

Press and hold the Power/Sleep button, and this time keep holding until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

The steps should be done rather quickly: press volume up, press volume down, and then press & hold the Power button. If you hold on to one of the volume buttons too long or don’t hold the power button long enough, it may not work.

Plug your iPhone into charging

If a force restart isn’t able to switch on your iPhone, plug it into charging for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Once the battery is adequately juiced up, try to switch on your iPhone normally or force restart it again.

Let the iPhone cool down

iPhone can heat up significantly if left on a wireless charger or a sunny day with maximum brightness, GPS, and many running apps. Once the internal temperature gets high enough, your iPhone becomes almost unusable or shuts down. You can turn it back on after it has cooled down.

Reset all iPhone settings

If your iPhone keeps turning off, reset all settings, and this should hopefully fix the problem.

Check for water damage

Your iPhone has a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) that is normally white or silver. But when it comes in contact with water, it turns red. Here’s how to determine if your iPhone is water damaged or not:

Set your device in bright light, and also make sure you have a flashlight handy.

Take out the SIM card tray and look inside.

If the LCI is red, water has gone inside your device, due to which it is performing inconsistently and turning off randomly or refusing to power on. Take it to an Apple Store to fix the problem.

Try DFU mode or full erase and set up

Once you have followed everything and the problem continues, put your iPhone in DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) and erase it. This will remove everything from your device and fix the software issues causing your iPhone to turn off and refuse to turn on. Before proceeding, make sure your back up your iPhone to iCloud or computer.

Related: How to erase everything on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Note: If you can’t use DFU mode due to lack of technical skills or fast internet, take it to an Apple Store, and they should assist.

Finally, if nothing helps, book an appointment at your nearest Apple Store or Apple-authorized store and get your device inspected. They will inspect the iPhone and tell you the exact hardware problem related to the internals or the battery.

Tick the Allow notifications to play sounds checkbox.

However, if you want to enable or disable notification sound for a particular app, you need to open an app from the Notifications from apps and other senders section and toggle the Play a sound when a notification arrives button to turn on or off.

Windows 11 will play the notifications sound depending upon your setting.

How to use Focus assist to manage notifications in Windows 11

Focus assist is equally responsible for showing or hiding notifications on your computer. It disables all the notifications at once. You can choose between Priority only and Alarms only options.

If you choose the former option, you can select the priority list. However, if you select the latter option, you won’t get any notifications other than your alarms.

Set Automatic rules for notifications in Windows 11

Automatic rules are the last thing you need to check in order to manage notifications in Windows 11. You can enable or disable certain types of notifications at a predefined time using this setting. It is recommended to read this article to know more about Automatic rules of Focus assist in Windows 11.

Why can’t I turn off notifications on Windows 11?

How To Turn Off Green Light On Apple Watch In 4 Steps

Although Apple Watch is the finest wearable for iPhone users, it might take some time to get used to everything it has to offer. Users are often unaware of the bright green lights that often illuminate the Apple Watch’s back. In this post, I’ll explain what that green light indicates and how you can turn it off on your Apple Watch.

What is green light on Apple Watch?

Your Apple Watch’s green light is an optical heart sensor that indicates your heart rate. Apple did this with the help of the green light because blood is an excellent absorber of this particular color.

They combined the green LED lights with light-sensitive photodiodes, which can measure how much blood is flowing through the wrist. When wearing your Apple Watch properly, it releases green light that passes through the wrist hundreds of times per second, measuring blood flow and counting the number of heartbeats each minute.

How to disable green light on Apple Watch

The green light on the Apple Watch doesn’t hurt your skin. However, if you find it irritating, you may disable it by employing the below-mentioned techniques.

Permanently disable the green light

You can completely shut down the green light emitting from your Apple Watch using either your iPhone or the Watch.

Using Apple Watch:

Press the Digital Crown → open the Settings app.

Tap Heart Rate.

Using iPhone:

Launch the Watch app.

Tap Privacy in the My Watch tab.

Temporarily turn off Apple Watch green light

The steps listed below will temporarily turn off the green light on your Apple Watch if you don’t want to disable it permanently.

Finish Heart Rate monitoring: Hold off until your heart rate has been recorded. While it is measuring your heart rate, the green light flashes continually. It will switch off automatically after completion. So, simply ignore it for a bit.

End a breath or reflection session: Swipe right and choose End when in a breath or reflection session. This ends the session and disables the green light while turning off the heart rate.

Stop a workout session: Swipe right on the Apple Watch display and choose End. This will end your workout and break heart rate monitoring, turning off the green light.

FAQs

Q. Why isn’t the green light on my Apple Watch working?

One of the prominent reasons that the green light isn’t working on your Apple Watch could be that you may have unintentionally disabled your Apple Watch’s Heart Rate functionality.

Q. Why is the green light on my Apple Watch on when I’m not wearing it?

Even if you aren’t wearing your Apple Watch, you may occasionally notice the green light emanating from the rear sensors. This is because an app may be active and trying to monitor your heart rate.

Q. What happens after you disable Heart Rate on your Apple Watch?

While you’re wearing it, the heart rate tracking ends when you turn off the heart rate function, which also permanently turns off the green light emission.

Wrapping up…

That’s it! It’s quick and straightforward to switch off the green light on your Apple Watch. While turning off the green light on your Apple Watch prevents it from providing regular heart rate data, it also offers you benefits, including battery life preservation and interruption prevention.

Why Your Laptop Won’t Turn On And 9 Ways To Fix

Pressing the power button on your Windows laptop or desktop computer turns on the screen and keyboard backlight. However, a faulty power button, overheating, or a loose battery connection can prevent your laptop from turning on.

If your laptop doesn’t turn on when charging or on battery power, the troubleshooting steps below should get it working again.

Table of Contents

1. Disconnect External Accessories

External devices and accessories (monitors, SD cards, USB drives, HDMI cables, etc.) can prevent your laptop from turning on. Unplug any accessory connected to your laptop and try turning it on again.

2. Check Indicator Lights for Hints

Pay attention to your laptop’s indicator light when you press the power button. The LED lights on some Dell and HP laptops blink in a programmed sequence to indicate possible battery or CPU failure.

A blinking LED light could also signal problems with your laptop’s Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) battery. Without the CMOS battery, the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) program can’t boot your laptop’s operating system.

Contact your laptop manufacturer if one or more of your device’s LED indicator lights blink intermittently when you press the power button. You could also check the manufacturer’s support website or instruction manual to learn what the diagnostic LED lights depict.

3. Charge the Laptop

Your laptop won’t turn on if it’s out of battery power. Charge your laptop from a wall outlet for 10-15 minutes and try turning it on again.

Counterfeit or knockoff power cables may not provide enough amperage or voltage to charge or boot your laptop. Hence, we recommend using the power supply that came with your laptop.

If your laptop’s power indicator doesn’t come on when connected to power, your charger is probably faulty.

A faulty wall outlet won’t charge or power on your laptop. Plug your power connector into a functional wall socket and ensure the connection isn’t loose.

If the wall socket powers other devices but your laptop, the power cord or adapter is either broken or unsupported. Buy replacement power accessories from your laptop manufacturer or authorized resellers.

4. Reinsert or Replace the Battery

Your laptop won’t turn on if its battery is bad or inserted incorrectly. Detach and reinsert your laptop battery if it’s removable. You can also try restoring your battery by freezing or recalibrating it. Replace the battery if it still doesn’t power your laptop.

5. Leave Your Laptop to Cool

Your laptop may shut down randomly and refuse to turn on if the battery, CPU, or other system components are overheating. It’s a thermal protection precaution to prevent hard disk failure or motherboard damage.

Place your laptop on a flat table and ensure nothing blocks the cooling vents. You could also use a cooling pad or external cooling fan to reduce your laptop’s temperature. Wait at least 30 minutes before turning your laptop back on.

If the overheating persists, your laptop’s internal fans could be broken or clogged. Refer to our tutorial on fixing laptop fan issues for troubleshooting solutions.

6. Increase Screen Brightness

Does your power indicator or keyboard backlight come on when you press the power button? Do you hear the fan spinning or whirling, but the display remains black or blank? Your laptop likely has a black screen because the display brightness is low or on the lowest level.

Press the brightness-up key on the top row of your keyboard to increase your laptop’s display brightness. Press the key repeatedly until your laptop’s display comes on.

7. Wake Your Laptop’s Screen

Windows has two keyboard shortcuts that can snap your laptop out of a blank or black screen. Try the keyboard shortcuts below if your laptop’s screen won’t come on when you press the power button.

Press the Windows key + P on your keyboard and wait a few seconds. The shortcut opens the Windows “Project” pane, where you can choose a presentation mode.

Ctrl + Alt + Del is another key combination that can wake a Windows computer screen. It reboots Windows and could help your laptop startup correctly.

The key combination opens a screen with several device management options if your laptop is stuck on a black screen.

8. Restart/Reset Your Graphics/Display Driver

If your laptop screen still doesn’t come on, there’s possibly a problem with your display adapter. Restarting the display adapter might fix the issue with your screen.

Disconnect all devices or accessories plugged into your laptop and press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.

Your laptop should make a beep, and the screen should come on in 5-10 seconds. Contact your laptop manufacturer or visit a repair shop to assess and replace the display/graphics adapter.

9. Fix Your Display Driver in Safe Mode

Does your laptop come on and immediately go back off? Boot into Safe Mode and update or reinstall your graphics/display drivers to fix the issue. Roll back the driver if your laptop stopped turning on after installing a driver update.

Note: If your laptop’s hard drive is encrypted, you’ll need your BitLocker key to enter Safe Mode. For more information, refer to our tutorial on finding BitLocker recovery keys in Windows.
