There’s no doubt that some webmasters are excited about the potential Google’s new “Disavow Links” tool holds for removing the negative valuation associated with low value inbound backlinks. However, before you dive in and start pasting together lists of links to submit for Google’s consideration using the tool, there are a few weaknesses you’ll want to be aware of.
Specifically, here are three very good reasons to avoid using the Disavow Links tool on your website:
Reason #1 – Small Mistakes Can Have Major ConsequencesComments should be entered following the “#” sign (e.g., “# I have not been able to reach the webmaster to have this link removed”)
Each of these pieces of information should be listed on its own line, no matter how many links you’ve chosen to submit for devaluation. Once your file is complete, the entire thing can be uploaded to the Disavow Links tool within Google’s Webmaster Tools program.
Sounds simple, right? Well, in some cases, it will be. However, if your site is large or if your backlink profile is relatively complex, the size of this file will grow exponentially – increasing the possibility that typos and other mistakes will change the way your information is interpreted by Google’s processing programs.
As an example of just how wrong this process can go, imagine that you’ve uncovered a spam site that’s pointing dozens of bad links at you. You enter the domain into your disavowal file – intending to block all links emanating out from the site – but unintentionally spell the website’s address wrong. Instead, you accidentally enter the URL of a website that’s sending you dozens of good quality links and passing your website valuable PageRank. Once your file is uploaded and propagated across Google’s servers, these high value links are cut off, decreasing your website’s natural search performance as a result of the diminished link equity flowing into your site.
And yes, it’s true that Google offers mistaken webmasters some opportunity for redress by allowing them to upload files with any necessary corrections – but this isn’t a “better late than never” situation. Repairing mistakes made to a disavowal file can take weeks or months to propagate across the web, assuming you notice them in the first place. Even this slight disruption can result in a serious loss of web traffic and revenue, making it a good idea for most inexperienced webmasters to stay away from this tool.
Reason #2 – Identifying Diseased Links is a Time-consuming ProcessIn order to use the Disavow Links tool, you must first identify the diseased links that should be devalued within your backlink profile. Like so many things online, that’s easier said than done…
First, you must pay to use a program like Majestic SEO or Ahrefs (as the free list found within Google’s Webmaster Tools won’t give you access to all of the links found in your profile). Then, you’ve got to go over your list of backlinks with a fine-toothed comb in order to uncover any links that look even remotely suspicious.
But don’t think that you can just dump these links into a disavowal file, upload it to Google and call it a day. Given the risk associated with entering good links into your file on accident, it’s important that you carry out a little further investigation to conclusively sort the good from the bad.
Of course, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t submit a disavowal list just because it’s time consuming. If you have low value links pointing at your site, it’s important to do something about them – whether or not you’ve actually received an unnatural links notice or experienced a Penguin-related penalty.
However, I’d still argue that most webmasters will ultimately have better results by focusing their efforts on building better links in order to compensate for any lower quality backlinks that are discovered. As long as over-optimized spam links don’t constitute the bulk of a website’s backlink profile, it’s unlikely that these few bad apples will lead to diminished natural search performance – especially if they’re accounted for with a proportionate increase in newer, higher quality links.
Reason #3 – Disavowing links may have no impact on your site’s performanceFinally, be aware that Google doesn’t claim that it will take webmaster disavowal suggestions at face value and immediately devalue any listed links. According to the company’s initial announcement:
“This tool allows you to indicate to Google which links you would like to disavow, and Google will typically ignore those links. Much like with rel=”canonical”, this is a strong suggestion rather than a directive—Google reserves the right to trust our own judgment for corner cases, for example—but we will typically use that indication from you when we assess links.”
Basically, you could go through all the effort of diagnosing bad links and ensuring that your disavowal file is 100% accurate, only to have your requested changes make no difference in your website’s SERPs rankings. Currently, there are no documented cases of the Disavow Links tool resulting in a Penguin or negative SEO recovery, so take the hype surrounding this tool as a one-way ticket to better natural search performance with a grain of salt.
Overall, I’d recommend that most webmasters not worry about the Disavow Links tool at all, with the exception of those in a few well-defined circumstances:
Your site has lost rank as the result of the Penguin algorithm update, and you haven’t yet been able to restore your rankings despite working with external site owners to remove low value backlinks.
Your reconsideration requests following post-Penguin cleanup have been denied.
You’ve received an unnatural links warning from Google and have been unable to clean up the links identified on your own.
You can conclusively prove that your site has been the victim of a negative SEO attack (and really, this doesn’t happen nearly as often as webmasters believe it does).
You’re an experienced SEO who has spent enough time looking through backlink profiles to be able to diagnose low value backlinks quickly and effectively.
If you don’t fall into one of these groups, you’ll almost always be better off by investing your efforts into building better quality backlinks or working with past linking partners to modify your existing links than to worry about using the Disavow Links tool to request the devaluation of seemingly low value backlinks.

Protect Yourself from KeyloggingTo protect yourself from a software keylogger, you can use an anti-keylogger software like GhostPress which encrypts all your keystrokes. The good things about GhostPress are that it is free, small, and portable which make it a good choice when you want to use a public computer or a system that is not yours.
To start, head over to the official site and download the software. Once downloaded, extract the contents of the zip file.
Now, execute the EXE file in the folder. Being a portable application, there is no need for you to install it. Once the application has been launched, it automatically encrypts any and all keystrokes. There is no need for you to mess with any settings.
If you want to further increase the protection then you can do that by simply selecting “Options” appearing on the left panel and then navigating to the “Security” tab. Here, select the checkbox “Process Protection” and optionally, set the Delay Protection to “Enhanced.” When the Delay Protection option is enabled, all your keystrokes will be randomly delayed for a short time so that the keylogger software cannot detect who you are based on your typing behaviour.
If you want to regularly use this software on your machine, then navigate to the “Widget” tab and select the “Start with Windows” checkbox. When enabled, GhostPress automatically launches on system startup eliminating the need to manually launch it every time.
Obviously, all the software you use can only protects you from the software keyloggers. If the attacker is using a hardware keylogger which sits between the keyboard and the system, all your keystrokes can still be leaked. So be extra cautious when you can using public computers like in Internet cafes.

Google’s John Mueller On Good Links And How To Get Them
In a Webmaster Hangout, Google’s John Mueller was asked to define what a good link is and how to get them. John Mueller also made reference to “other signals” that can power up your rankings.
Example of a Good LinkThe question asked is a good one. Here is what the publisher asked:
“Could I get an example of… what a good link would be…?”
Google’s John Mueller answered:
“A good link… so I mean the traditional good link is someone who comes across your website and thinks it’s a fantastic website and recommends it to other people with a link.”
John Mueller probably understands that a good link doesn’t happen by itself. He said something interesting, he recommended promoting the website. There are many who feel that website promotion tied to link building is not necessary. But John Mueller acknowledged the obvious, that a ball isn’t going to roll until someone gives it a push.
Here’s what Google’s Mueller said:
“So basically on the one hand that involves some amount of self-promotion from your side like you have to get some people to come and visit your website somehow so that they can recognize that this is actually a good website.
And there are lots of ways that you can do that. And then that also involves one of those people or some of those people going well, this is a really fantastic website and I have another website that I can link, from where I can link to your website.
So it’s not the case that every visitor coming to your website will say it’s a fantastic website and I also have a website and let me link to your website from my website, but some of these people they can.”
The publisher responded that he doesn’t build links and like many, feels that it’s spammy.
He has a point. Many people approach link building like beggars asking for spare change. It’s a nuisance. Others approach it as a transaction and offer to pay for the links.
It seemed like the publisher didn’t like either options and was trying to find a way to build links that didn’t feel spammy to him.
Here is the follow up question:
“It seems like it would be a rarity. I’ve never really engaged in proactive link building but I honestly feel like we’ve kind of fallen behind because of that.
I think other websites maybe in the niche have a lot more inbound links and I’m not sure whether they’re actively reaching out to other webmasters, “Hey, can you link to us?”
I’m not sure… I should really do some more research on that but I think… there’s an importance there, right?”
Google’s John Mueller acknowledged the difficulty of links:
“I think it’s tricky because on the one hand it is sometimes useful to reach out to people and say like, “Hey, look at my website, it’s like you have a great website, I have a great website, take a look at my content, our content kind of aligns… maybe you’d be able to recommend my content if you like it as well.
I mean there are different ways of framing that, there are lots of really kind of more spammy ways of doing it, like you mentioned like people just saying, well look I have this web page that matches five keywords on your other web page. Can you link to it?” Like, that’s not really that useful.”
Other Signals Apart From LinksHere’s where it gets super interesting. I’ve long suspected that the role of links has been shrinking. Natural links seem like they don’t happen often anymore.
If Google is discounting non-natural links, then what else is Google using?
John Mueller seems to acknowledge there are other signals that Google uses:
“The other thing to keep in mind is we use a lot of different things for ranking and it’s not just links.
So especially if you’re active in an area where people tend not to link a lot, that’s something that the other competitors have to work with as well and where we do try to pick up other signals to see like this is actually a pretty good website.”
The “other signals” is an interesting reference. Something that needs an entire article to address. I sure hope someone asks him about that in a future hangout.
Links Are Still ImportantJohn Mueller finished by affirming the importance of links. His answer wasn’t an end to end link strategy, but it’s good that he affirmed that promotion is important and that it doesn’t need to be spammy.
Here’s what he said:
“Links are really important for us to find content initially.
So it’s like if nobody links to your website ever then we’re going to have a hard time recognizing that it even exists.”
Links Not CriticalOne more insight that bears pointing out. Mueller said that if the content is good, that once it’s found, links aren’t critical.
“But once we found it and started crawling it and started indexing its content and seeing that it’s pretty good stuff then those links are generally not that critical anymore.”

Why Apple Shouldn’t Pass On The Rumored Jet White Iphone 7
From an aesthetic standpoint, everyone is going to have their two cents on the necessity of it in the grand scheme of things. Simply by moving the discussion from the fashion sphere to the finance department though, the ambivalence in regard to whether or not this iPhone release is genuinely necessary quickly crumbles and clearly comes down on one side of the fence.
As we will learn in late January, Apple’s first quarter of the fiscal year 2023 is going to look after itself nicely, but in view of the Q2 figures and a long summer following, Jet White definitely needs to happen. Two key reasons must be paid attention to in order to understand the imperative of a Jet White iPhone for a healthier bottom line in the fiscal year of 2023.
Let’s kick this off by saying that by and large Apple is of course still flying incredibly high and unlike some, I am not going to exhibit the overbearing arrogance to tell you otherwise. With that out of the way, the Apple of late has seen quite a few hiccups and could be on the precipice of another negative record year. Yes the Q1 earnings report in January is going to look glorious for a variety of reasons (and good on Apple for that) with analysts predicting revenues of up to $76.96 billion – which would marginally best last year’s Q1 results – but that is hardly telling the whole story. The whole story namely comprises the fact Apple desperately needs that break, hopefully ending a negative streak of three quarters of year-over-year declines in revenue.
The answer to whether or not this negative record can be broken we will learn soon enough, and does not hinge on the possible introduction of a Jet White iPhone 7 some time around March. Yet it is important to remember that in spite of the assumedly strong figures that will be published by the end of January, it is not all smooth sailing at Apple. The truth of the matter is that the drop from the beginning of the fiscal year 2023 to Q2 and Q3 could be steeper than ever, which is why the new coating would play a crucial role. Here are the two central points to substantiate my claim:

The iPhone SE vacuumIt somewhat befuddles me to think the iPhone SE happened this year, but it did see the light of day just this March. Accordingly, Apple had an absolute crowd pleaser in the pipeline for that critical Q2 spell following the holiday quarter. The SE succeeded at bolstering the sales revenue from March onwards, appealing to both Apple nostalgics and segments with less buying power. But where there is light, there is also plenty of shadow, because despite the additional revenue stream (let’s ignore product cannibalisation for simplicity), the drop in revenues from Q1’16 to Q2’16 has been appreciably steeper than the corresponding curve back in 2023. The graph following below visualises that by pitting quarterly revenues of the two years against each other. The green wedge is visible enough already, so just imagine the drop of the curve without the SE pulling its weight in 2023.
What does that tell us about 2023? The gist is that not even the iPhone SE in 2023 could save Apple from continuing their quarterly year-over-year decline. Now imagine the additional revenue of a new introduction to the iPhone family in March breaking away altogether in 2023, and the impact this would have on the revenue curve. It is by no means a long shot to say that the dropout would be considerably worse than what we saw in April this year, when Apple reported a drop of $8 billion in revenue in year-over-year comparison for Q2 ($58bn in Q2’15 to $50bn in Q2’16). A white and shiny iPhone 7 fresh on the shelves to grab in March could counteract the trend of a back to back plummet in Q2. If Apple were to forfeit the chance of a white iPhone boost, I believe the Q2’17 numbers could dwindle down to a dismal $40 billion.
Aside from the iPhone SE vacuum occurring in 2023, other variables need to be factored in to understand the seriousness of the descent we might face after peaking in late January: Apple Watch sales are still rocky (although we might get a glimpse of the potential of the Series 1 and 2 in January’s earnings report) and have gathered zero to negative momentum in 2023 (more on that later) and analysts are expecting the iPhone 7 euphoria to wane quicker than in previous years, eventuating in much lower shipment numbers in early 2023. With the shine coming off the iPhone 7 earlier than it did for its predecessors, the Jet White iPhone could be the lifeline Apple needs. Perhaps not to fully tide them over spring 2023, but at least to soften the blow.
Botched product launches for ChristmasNo matter how hard Apple is going to try to put a spin on this, PR language can not gloss over the monumental fail the launch of the AirPods has been. At $159, the product must harvest margins that will make any Apple executive salivate. Add to it the fact that hundreds of millions of iPhone users are potential buyers and Apple really forewent a massive chunk of revenue for what they label ‘Other Products’. This category also contains Watch sales, which as touched on before evidently stagnated through 2023.
I don’t mention the wearable at this point because I like to go off on a tangent, but rather because the slow rollout of Series 1 and 2 could be indicative of what the AirPods might suffer from as well: we do not know at what point AirPods are actually going to attain a fair market saturation, we are not privy to how bad the bottleneck situation is right now and how distant a future lies in which we can promenade into an Apple Store and grab a pair on a whim. The backlog could easily carry into Q2 and hamper the value of ‘Other Products’, which is going to be covered up by tremendous iPhone unit sales in Q1, but laid bare in Q2.
Beats X are suffering an even grimmer fate, one where we know next to nothing about a possible release in 2023. Just like with the AirPods, this is going to be an accessory badly needed to counterbalance (as much as ‘Other Products’ worth $2-5 billion can offset dwindling iPhone sales) the sales revenue hit to be recorded in Q2’17. Besides, never mind the opportunity costs for Apple with those two big cash cows not providing the milk they could and should have if handled more professionally.
As you can see in the data, ‘Other Products’ are a far cry from the worth of any other product category, even though they were designated to enjoy a huge growth spurt right about now. The botched launches are going to thwart that development for months into the fiscal year of 2023, again calling for an alternative product to iron out such shortcomings. This is again where the Jet White iPhone enters the scene, ideally coming to the rescue.
In conclusion, those should be the two major motivations for Apple to launch Jet White in March. Another rather tongue in cheek point to consider is that the success story of iPhone 7 is in parts surely down to the simple fact that they were finally offered in new, black colors. Mind you, that is not to say the iPhone 7 boasted underwhelming specs, but at the end of the day visual stimuli often make or break purchase decisions. It has proven to work beautifully for iPhone 7 in 2023 and it would be smart business to make use of that strategy one more time next March.
