Suggested December 2023 ‘Windows 11 Memory Integrity Is Off’ Issue: How To Fix

The security of your Windows PC is paramount for its proper functioning. If the system is secured from hackers and malware attacks and its core functionalities are stable, then Windows has a safe environment to execute integral functions.

Windows has a few security features that leverage different components for this purpose, and Memory Integrity is one of them. But such features can also sometimes come in the way of system performance, especially when they are imposed upon you by default.

In this guide, we take a deep dive into all things related to Memory Integrity – what is it, its pros and cons, and how and why you should enable or disable it for different purposes.

How does Memory Integrity work?

To understand the breadth of how memory integrity works, we need to understand two other features that are related to it – Core Isolation and Virtual Machine Platform (VMP).

Core Isolation: This is a set of virtualization-based security features that safeguards important core processes by isolating them in the memory and creating a virtual environment where these processes can run undeterred.

Virtual Machine Platform (VMP): VMP provides the virtual machine services that the ‘Core Isolation’ feature relies upon.

Memory Integrity: Also referred to as Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI), this is a Windows security feature that comes under the main ‘Core Isolation’ umbrella and helps prevent malicious software and programs from getting access to drivers and gaining control over high-security processes.

When these features are turned on, Windows isolates the core decision-making processes from the rest of the memory and creates a safe working environment for them.

When a program is run, memory integrity has to verify its driver code and ensure that the driver installed is trustworthy before it can have access to Windows’ core features. As highlighted by Microsoft itself, this whole process is analogous to a security guard inside a locked booth, where ‘Memory Integrity’ is the security guard in the isolated environment created by ‘Core Isolation’.

All this increases system security, and although all this happens very quickly, with so many checks, there’s bound to be some impact elsewhere.

What impact does Memory Integrity have on the performance of your PC?

Microsoft has noted that the virtualization technology and memory integrity features can have some impact on performance, especially when gaming or running resource-heavy applications.

In a blog post, Microsoft said that “in some scenarios and some configurations of gaming devices there may be a performance impact with Memory Integrity and VMP on… “.

The whole process of driver verification takes up crucial system resources and is bound to have an impact on performance. However, it must be noted that on modern systems that run Windows 11, the impact can seem negligible when one is running day-to-day tasks. It is only when a resource-hungry application is run that precious resources feel the squeeze.

When should you disable Memory Integrity on Windows 11?

The whole set of core isolation features is an important aspect of Windows security. It is an essential cog in the overall safety of your PC and your data against malicious software and hackers. But the performance tradeoff may not be worth it, depending on where you stand.

Even though the impact on performance may or may not be noticeable for general productivity, it is a different story when it comes to gaming. That means that if you are experiencing performance setbacks with these features turned on, you should perhaps look at disabling them before starting a game.

According to Microsoft, “Gamers who want to prioritize performance have the option to turn off these features while gaming and turn them back on when finished playing. However, if turned off, the device may be vulnerable to threats.”

‘Windows 11 Memory Integrity is off’ issue: How to turn it on in 3 ways

If you have decided to turn off memory integrity, here are a few ways that will help you do so:

Method 1: Using Windows Security

Press Start, type “Windows Security” and hit Enter.

Here, under Memory integrity, flip the switch to “Off”.

You will get a Windows Security notification asking you to restart your system for the changes to take effect.

To turn memory integrity back on, come back to this window and toggle “Memory Integrity” to “On”.

Method 2: Using the Registry Editor

Another way to turn Memory Integrity off is to do so using the registry editor. Here’s how to go about it.

Press Start, type “regedit”, and hit Enter.

Once the Registry Editor opens up, navigate to the following address:

ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlDeviceGuardScenariosHypervisorEnforcedCodeIntegrity

Alternatively, copy the above and paste it into the registry editor’s address bar, and hit Enter.

Then set its value data from ‘0’ to ‘1‘.

Now close the registry editor and restart your PC for the changes to take effect.

Method 3: Using the Group Policy Editor

The group policy editor can be used to enable or disable the whole virtualization-based security that memory integrity depends upon. To do so, follow the steps below:

Press Start, type “group policy” and hit Enter.

Select Disabled to turn it off.

Now close the group policy editor and restart your PC.

To turn it back on, select Enabled instead.

Select Enabled with UEFI Lock.

Now close the group policy editor and restart your PC.

FIX: Memory Integrity is off and cannot be turned on

For some users, simply flipping on the Memory Integrity switch doesn’t turn it on. In its stead, what they get is an error message telling them that they have incompatible or rogue drivers installed.

In most cases, Windows will tell exactly which driver is causing problems. You will need to check with the device manufacturer if there are any compatible drivers available. If that is not the case, uninstalling the application or the device linked to those drivers can solve the issue, and you will have to wait until the publisher rolls out compatible drivers before using the applications associated with it.

If uninstalling the application or the device doesn’t solve the issue, you will have to uninstall the incompatible driver yourself. To do so, firstly, note down the “published name” of the driver when you receive the error message.

Then, follow the steps below:

Here, type the following command to get a list of all third-party drivers on your system:

dism /online /get-drivers /format:table

Hit Enter. You will now get a list of all third-party drivers on your system, including additional information about them such as the provider’s name, date published, version, etc.

To uninstall the one that is causing the problems, type the following command:

pnputil /delete-driver (driver's published name) /uninstall /force

Make sure you type the correct published name. Otherwise, you may end up deleting a working driver and cause problems with your peripherals and applications. Hit Enter after typing the command.

You will now have removed the problematic driver and can turn on memory integrity via the methods given above.

FAQs

1. Should I turn on memory integrity on Windows 11?

Memory Integrity is a crucial feature of Windows security, in that it creates another layer of security for the core components that operate from the virtual environment. Without it turned on, you’re basically leaving your system vulnerable to threats of different kinds that can jeopardize not just your system but your data as well.

That said, if you’re only disabling it for a short period of time, say while you’re playing a game, it shouldn’t cause too much trouble since there are other Windows security features that can protect you in its stead.

2. Does memory integrity slow down the PC?

In theory, memory integrity can have an impact on performance. However, in practical application, you may or may not feel a dip in performance at all. Only while running resource-intensive applications like games will you feel a slight slowdown. So, if you want to boost your gaming performance, you can try disabling memory integrity beforehand.

3. Is Memory Integrity on by default?

The Memory Integrity feature used to be turned off by default earlier. However, Microsoft has been pushing hard for users to adopt this as a security feature, and, ever since the 22H2 update, it has been turned on by default.

We hope you now have a better understanding of what memory integrity is, what it does, and how you can turn it on or off depending on whether you want to have better performance or better security on Windows 11.

Locate And Fix Windows 10 Memory Leaks

Windows 10 was released in 2023 and brought in many features that improved the usability of the operating system. It is, however, far from perfect as many users report numerous bugs, which plague their user experience on their devices.

One such issue is the memory leak in Windows 10 operating system. This is a result of faulty memory allocation, as one or many RAM locations remain unreleased. Here I shall discuss Windows 10 memory leak, and how to solve this issue.

We have shown a VIDEO walk through at the end of the post for easy solution.

Since this is a software bug, physically changing the memory module will not solve your issue. A memory leak affects your system in many ways. These include:

No free memory is available during idle tasks.

Many applications fail to run properly if sufficient ram not available to them.

Your system will feel slow and the performance will take a hit, as insufficient memory will lead to poor response time.

Many applications may crash, including Windows itself.

Continuous strain on the device may eventually lead to hardware issues as well.

If you see your device slow down even during idle stages, you can suspect a memory leak. To confirm this, you can use many memory diagnostic tools, which will help you confirm your suspicions.

You can use the built-in tool called Resource Monitor, which can be used to scan system resources. Use the Run dialog (Win + R), type resmon, and press Enter to launch the Resource monitor. Under the Memory tab, monitor the Standby (blue bar) with the applications you usually use running.

You can also use the Windows Memory diagnostic tool to scan the memory usage at boot. Use the Run dialog and type chúng tôi and press Enter. Select Restart now option, and Windows will scan your physical memory and device thoroughly at boot.

Microsoft has another great tool called RaMMap, which can be used to check how Windows assigns physical memory and cached data in RAM. Download RaMMap, and run it as an administrator to diagnose your device for any lost memory.

If you found a memory leak on your device, you must fix memory leak immediately to save your device from being damaged. A memory leak is an issue that needs to be solved by the product developers. Here are some of the ways in which you can attempt to solve a Windows 10 memory leak.

The task manager is a great place to monitor your current processes and how much resources they are occupying on your device. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc to launch the task manager, and use this tool to monitor the applications running on your device.

Outdated drivers also cause many problems, including memory leaks. Windows has included the inbuilt Device Manager tool that can be used to check outdated drivers on your device.

Open a Run dialog by pressing Win + R. Type chúng tôi and press Enter to launch the device manager.

The memory diagnostic tool that you used earlier can also be used to scan and fix errors associated with your physical memory. This can come in handy if you suspect that the physical memory altercations may be causing this error.

To run and schedule a memory scan, follow these steps:

Open a Run window by pressing Win + R.

Type mdsched.exe and press Enter to launch the Memory Diagnostic Tool.

Upon reboot, perform a basic scan, or go for the Advanced options like ‘Test mix’ or ‘Pass count’. Press F10 to start the test.

The diagnostic tool will scan and fix the bad sectors in your memory module, and may eventually fix memory leak on your device.

Many users have reported that there was a hidden malware on their device, which was causing the improper memory allocation on their devices. This is actually a common fault that many people face, as malware can hide itself on devices by disguising themselves as other popular apps.

If you already own premium anti-virus software, you can use that to run a malware scan. Alternatively, you can choose from other free options like Malwarebytes, which can do the basics for free.

Windows 10 usually defrags your hard drive automatically to prevent any memory and storage errors. However, you can occasionally do this manually as well to optimize your performance.

Select Properties from the context menu.

After you follow the on-screen instructions that follow, restart your device to save the new fragmentations.

You can use this simple registry tool, to clear the chúng tôi that Windows uses as Virtual Memory. When Windows runs out of physical memory, it uses Page File by writing some of the memory to the disk. Clearing this will increase the shutdown time of your device, but the memory allocation shall improve.

Open a Run window by pressing Win + R.

ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management

Change its value to 1.

Restart your device.

How To Fix ‘Failed To Add Member’ Issue On Groupme

Microsoft’s group messaging app, GroupMe, has picked up quite a following especially with the younger crowd. It is especially useful to keep up to date with school work, assignments, or even just catch up with friends. Unfortunately, users have noticed recently that they cannot add new members to their groups. This being the crux of the app, naturally, people are annoyed.

If you too have encountered this, read on to find out how you can solve the ‘failed to add member’ problem on GroupMe.

What is GroupMe

GroupMe is a messaging platform that focuses primarily on group messages. While users can also directly message each other, this is less common. GroupMe is cross-platform accessible making it a good way to stay in touch with users on different platforms. A unique aspect of the program is that you do not even need to have the app to chat with your friends. You can add a friend using just their phone number, and that person will be able to send and receive SMSs to the group.

Why can’t you add people to a group

Recently a slew of complaints has popped up touting the same concern. When you try to add someone to a group, you get the message ‘*Name cannot be added’. The problem does seem to be a bug preventing users from adding people to groups.

It has been noticed that the problem only surfaces when adding people that do not have the GroupMe app installed on their device. This contradicts the app’s claim that users do not need to have the app to communicate with their friends. It should be noted that you cannot add people to a closed group in which you are not the creator.

Possible fixes for the problem

Here are some possible fixes that should help you add your friends to a group. If one of them doesn’t work, do try the others.

Restart the device

As easy as the solution is, a simple restart (soft reset) is all you need to fix a bug nagging you, whether it’s an issue with the system app or a 3rd-party app like GroupMe. Press and hold the power button to get the Restart option. Tap on Restart to reboot your phone. Let it restart. Open the GroupMe app again and try to add a member now.

Refresh the app

If you have tried to add a person to a group and get the message ‘*Name cannot be added’, don’t worry. It seems like the most common fix to this is simply going back to the main (conversations) page of the app and refreshing it.

To refresh the page just swipe downward. You should see the page reload.

Now go back to that group. You should see a notification tell you that the person has been invited. Copy the link provided and send it to the person.

Share the group link

If you still cannot add the person even after they have used the download link, you can try sharing the invite to your group. Note: If the group is closed, only the creator of the group can send the group invite link. However, for open groups, any of the members can send out the link.

To send the group invite link first launch the GroupMe app and tap on the group in question.

Now tap on the three dots in the top right corner. Select ‘Share group’. Choose the app that you would like to use to send out the group invite.

Try using the website

If you don’t have your phone around, you can access your GroupMe groups via the GroupMe website. Some users have found that adding members to groups via the GroupMe website circumvents the problem.

To add a member using the website, first log in to the Website with your GroupMe credentials. Now select the group that you would like to add the person to.

Check if the person has left the group

GroupMe does not let you add users that have left a particular group, back to that same group. While the users who left can always opt to join back in, they cannot be added back by someone else.

Clear app’s cache, and data (Android only)

If clearing the cache didn’t help, you can clear its data. This removes all the data the app has stored on your device, and thus gives it a clean start again. This should fix the issue, we guess.

Delete the app and re-install (Android and iOS)

Factory Reset

If it is very important for you to use GroupMe and none of the features above are working for you, then the Hard Reset of your device is the last option for you that can fix the issue.

Yes, it’s a very painful option as resetting the device will delete everything on your phone and you will need to install all the apps again that didn’t come preinstalled. You will need to set up the phone and apps again, too. Also, be sure to back up everything you need to.

Here’s how to do a factory reset on Android.

Here’s how to do a factory reset on iOS.

Is there a limit on the number of people that can be in a group?

GroupMe allows up to 500 people to be in a single group. However, they claim that any more than 200 will make the group too noisy. This is also why they have a limit on the number of group members.

In order to remain in a group, each member must reply at least once in the group. This helps confirm that all the members of the group are active.
