Several analysts see Microsoft’s announcement of Windows Phone 7 Series this week at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, as a watershed event that very well could put the software giant back in the mobile operating system game.
However, the notable absence of much talk by Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) executives at the announcement about the current Windows Mobile 6.5, which just began shipping on new handsets in October, is perplexing to some.
The initial response, though, was overwhelmingly positive towards 7 Series, Microsoft’s competitor to the iPhone and Android, due out in time for this fall’s holiday sales.
Other pundits and analysts weighed in similarly.
The future of Windows 6.xMicrosoft has spent a lot of time and money promoting its Windows Mobile 6.x operating systems over the years as the supportable solution for smartphones used in corporate settings. The company had even been rumored to be ready to introduce a new release of 6.x — sometimes referred to as Windows Mobile 6.6 — at the MWC conference.
That rumored announcement never came, however.
Still, Microsoft officials claim that the 6.x line is not dead.
One outstanding question is whether corporate customers and partners with 6.x-based applications will be able to run those apps on 7 Series phones and, failing that, whether they will be able to easily port them to the new platform.
While the answer to that is still unknown, Microsoft is likely to provide at least some details next month at its MIX 2010 conference in Las Vegas, which has a range of sessions dedicated to Windows Phones.
A Microsoft spokesperson said its OEMs are seeing increased demand in emerging markets for smartphones with less demanding hardware components and lower price points. “Businesses want cost effective software to build vertical solutions and consumers want a lower cost alternative for work and play,” she said. “We created the Windows Phone 6 Starter Edition SKU to address these customer and partner needs.
In a related announcement, BSquare (NASDAQ: BSQR) announced Tuesday it is readying a mobile developers kit called Windows Phone 6 Starter Edition.
One well-known blogger attending MWC, Long Zheng, author of the “Istartedsomething” blog, said he learned during an interview with Microsoft at the event that the company sees the older operating system as co-existing with 7 Series for now.
“Going forward, Windows Mobile 6.5 (and Windows Mobile 6.5.3) will be rebranded as Windows Phones Classic, and presumably the devices as Windows Phones Classic Series,” he added.

“New technology typically goes through a testing cycle after a new platform is released. That cycle won’t start until the platform is finalized. Nokia And Windows Phone 7: Could Two Wrongs Make A Right?
This week, however, that speculation has reached a fever pitch as observers focused on the possibility of a partnership with Microsoft in particular.
Buoyed by an open letter in the Financial Times by Berenberg Bank analyst Adnaan Ahmad, the prospect of a deal with Microsoft has actually boosted Nokia’s shares every day so far this week, adding up to a 4 percent increase since Monday, The New York Times reported.
Android is “a no-go for now,” Ahmad wrote in his letter to Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “You will never be able to catch up with Samsung, which should rule the Android show midterm given its economies of scale, product breadth (TVs, PCs, phones and tablets), as well as its captive component base. And more significantly, how is anyone going to differentiate on Android long-term?”
An exclusive deal with Microsoft, on the other hand, is Ahmad’s suggestion.
‘The Biggest Joke in the Tech Industry’
Such a deal would give Nokia access to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 intellectual property “scot-free,” he wrote, as well as access to the U.S. market, which has been problematic for the company. It would also cut Nokia’s “bloated” R&D handset business budget by at least 30 percent, he suggested.
Instead, Nokia should focus its high-end portfolio around Windows Phone 7, Ahmad asserted, moving its Symbian solutions into the low to mid-range smartphone market quickly so as to defend against lowering costs on the Android side.
As for Microsoft, “two million units shipped in the last quarter is not really much to write home about, given $500m in marketing programmes (ouch), but with Nokia on-side, you get access to a potential 20-25 percent global share over time–and exclusivity,” Ahmad explained. “You need to tie yourself to a high-volume player to be relevant.”
A Losing Combination
Though not everyone agrees that Nokia needs to switch to one of the other existing operating environments to survive–it could also innovate a new one, at least in theory–I can certainly see that that might be the easiest route, at least for its short-term health. What I can’t see, however, is how Windows Phone 7 could possibly be the right choice, given its own lackluster performance in the market.
Microsoft and mobile just don’t seem to be a successful mix; why would a world leader like Nokia want to attach itself to that generally losing combination? Android would be a far better choice.
I also disagree with Ahmad’s assertion that Nokia would be unable to differentiate itself in the Android arena. It may not be a leader in the United States, but Nokia has incredibly strong brand recognition around the world, and its low-priced handsets are still doing well in many developing economies. In fact, Nokia is actually on the rise in China–one of the most vast markets on the planet–with sales climbing 24 percent in the last quarter, according to Forbes .
A Compelling Mix
I believe Ahmad is grossly underestimating Nokia’s brand potential and its ability to stand out among a crowd of Android competitors. Personally, I think an Android phone with the Nokia name would be an incredibly compelling combination, and could stand far above its competitors, even in the United States.
Which way will Nokia go–if, indeed, in either of these directions? Presumably we’ll find out on Feb. 11, when the company is expected to deliver its next strategy and financial briefing. In the meantime, I’m hoping that Nokia doesn’t take Ahmad’s arguments too seriously.

Infrared Hot Yoga Mimics The Power Of The Sun. But Is That … Good?
Another fitness trend is heating up across the US—and it involves stretching and sweating in dry, desert-like heat.
Rather than cranking up the temperatures in studios with traditional forced air systems, infrared hot yoga uses heated panels to mimic the sun’s warmth. The radiant energy warms practitioners’ bodies and the floor rather than the surrounding air.
“It was definitely a different sensation, practicing in the dry heated conditions,” says Stacy D. Hunter, the director of the Cardiovascular Physiology Lab at Texas State University, who has practiced hot yoga for more than a decade and studies how the heated and non-heated forms affect vascular health. “It didn’t really feel hotter [at first] because there was practically no humidity there, but when you get to practicing … it’s very difficult, it feels very hot, and it’s very mentally challenging.”
Hot yoga vs. regular yoga“Yoga in general is great for so many reasons, for physical and mental health,” says Cara Hall, a physician who specializes in primary care sports medicine at Keck Medicine of USC.
The movements improve strength, flexibility, and balance. Research also indicates that yoga can ease lower back and neck pain, reduce stress, and improve sleep. When practiced consistently, Hunter says, it can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and helps the blood vessels dilate to improve blood flow. She and her collaborators are further investigating how non-heated yoga affects immune function.
During a hot yoga class, the room is heated to around 90 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, which lets participants limber up and sweat more. This variation is intended to further boost flexibility and deepen stretches.
“For someone who is training or conditioning to do some sort of performance event in a hot place or just trying to peak their performance, hot yoga may be a good way to kind of acclimate to that environment or to be able to push yourself a little more,” Hall says.

However, Hunter notes, the overall amount of calories burned during hot yoga and other traditional yoga styles are pretty similar. She and her team have further found that hot yoga and non-heated yoga have similar effects on blood vessel dilation. “It didn’t appear that the heat conferred any additional benefit in terms of vascular function,” she says.
“A lot is still undocumented in terms of the benefits of hot yoga,” Hunter adds. “Some of the claims that have been made about it have definitely preceded the evidence to back that up.”

Let’s talk about detoxingOne particularly shaky claim is that hot yoga, and infrared hot yoga in particular, help with “detoxification.” But the main thing to remember is that the primary role of sweating is to cool the body, not to flush out harmful substances. In fact, when you work up a sweat, you lose electrolytes, which include minerals that are essential for many bodily functions. “I am unaware of any detoxification through sweating,” Hunter says.
The liver is the main organ responsible for dealing with waste products and any damaging substances that a person might encounter, like ammonia. “When we’re talking about losing toxins, I would leave that to the liver,” Hall says.
In general, it’s possible that practicing in dry heat could lessen the risk of overheating during class, Hunter says, although more data is needed to confirm this. “Humidity makes it harder for sweat to evaporate … it’s really the evaporation of the sweat that carries the heat away from the body,” she says. “With the dry infrared heat you can definitely tolerate higher temperatures as well, compared to the heat combined with the humidity like in the Bikram, or traditional, hot yoga style.” (Bikram is a particularly intense form of hot yoga popularized in the 1970s by a self-prescribed Indian guru, who later fled the US after multiple accusations of sexual assault).

Regular hot yoga can be pretty “sticky,” Hall acknowledges. “The infrared [heat] may make it a more pleasant experience, which may help you further along your practice because it feels less stuffy, more natural, etcetera,” she says. “I think the main target for this is going to be the people who are doing hot yoga to begin with and potentially make it more comfortable.”
Hunter is also running a study to determine whether infrared hot yoga may improve vascular health in Black adults in the US, who tend to be disproportionately sensitive to blood pressure changes. Still, she suspects that the practice doesn’t offer many health benefits beyond the classic kinds of yoga.
What to consider before you try infrared hot yogaThere are a few potential risks to keep in mind when practicing infrared and other other kinds of hot yoga.
Practicing in toasty conditions makes for a vigorous workout, but it can lead to injuries when people push themselves too far because they’re looser than usual. Hot yoga also comes with an increased risk of dehydration and overheating.

“I caution people not to go past their point of comfort; it should feel like a bit of a stretch but nothing extreme and definitely do not push through pain,” she says. “That is a risk that you run with hot yoga: overdoing it.”
It’s also important to familiarize yourself with the signs of heat-related illnesses. “I have been in situations in which there has been someone in the room who starts to be disoriented, or maybe they look like they’re going to pass out, and the instructor will tell them not to leave the room. That is dangerous,” Hunter says. “Definitely don’t listen to that instruction.”
There are a number of conditions that can make it unsafe for people to practice infrared and other forms of hot yoga, Hunter says, such as heart disease, pregnancy, very high blood pressure, or being on certain medications.
If you end up committing to an infrared hot yoga practice, “just set your expectations realistically going into it,” Hall says. “The focus should be on it getting you stronger, potentially some mental health benefits, and flexibility benefits, rather than, ‘How much can I sweat?’”

3. Hack ItIf the idea of bricking your old console isn’t a deal breaker, you might want to try modding. There are a number of passionate modding communities that have developed ways to repurpose your old console. Modding a Wii or Wii U is fairly easy and can open the door to strong homebrew communities. You can also experiment by flashing custom firmware on your Xbox 360 to play backups of your games from a hard drive. In addition, you can even install Linux on your PS3 for a console-turned-PC or file server.
Note: the legality of modding/hacking your console depends on what you are planning to do with it. Be aware that altering your console will definitely void your warranty.
4. Gut ItWith the NES and SNES Classic tapping in to nostalgia, why not make your own? Simply gut your old console’s insides and replace them with a Raspberry Pi. You’ll end up with an emulation machine housed in a legit retro console shell that can play a heck of a lot more than 30 games. You can even cram a Raspberry Pi Zero in an old controller or game cartridge!
Personally, the thought of opening up one of my beloved old consoles and ripping its guts out is horrifying. However, if you have an old console that doesn’t work anymore or is destined for the trash heap, you might want to consider it.
5. Use It as a Media CenterWho needs a Fire Stick or Apple TV when you have a perfectly good media player in the form of your old console? Older consoles from the last generation or two like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can play physical media like DVDs and Blu-rays.

In addition, older consoles can also play back media files housed on external USB flash drives and hard drives. Furthermore, these consoles often support a wide range of video streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube. Finally, grab a media remote and ditch the controller to complete the transformation!
6. Set Up a Game RoomOne of the most obvious things to do with an old console is to hook it up and revisit your old favorites. If you’ve got the space, you might want to consider creating a dedicated videogame room. Be aware that connecting older consoles to modern TVs does require some extra hardware.
Alternatively, you can grab a few cheap CRT TVs from Craigslist or a local thrift store for a more authentic experience. Last but not least, snag some videogame paraphernalia to scatter around and viola, you have a dedicated game room.
7. Recycle ItIf none of the above appeals to you, you might be leaning towards simply throwing your console out. Just don’t dump it in the trash. Old electronics, including video game consoles, have a number of hazardous chemicals inside them. Over time the electrical components inside your console corrode and poison the environment.
Instead, do Mother Nature a favor and recycle your old console. Best Buy and Nintendo of America both have game console recycling programs. Alternatively, you can find a local e-waste recycling center by checking the e-Stewards website.

DesignThanks to Apple’s new iOS 7 design, Readdle has decided to flatten out its printer app, too. Now, Printer Pro sports an iOS 7 style with simple, one-touch access to all of your printing needs.
Users add a printer to the app and then have the option to print from a number of locations in their iOS device. Choose from specific documents, clipboard text, contacts, photos, and more.
Each section offers a detailed summary of how to print from the selected location. For example, under the Documents section, read how to use the “Open In” feature that lets you save files to a variety of locations. Once Printer Pro is in your iPhone or iPad, the app will be added to the list of places you will be able to open a file or document in. Once added to Printer Pro, you can select it from the app to print it.
One big change in version 5 is the addition of printing options. When you are ready to print a document for the first time on iOS, you will be able to select specific pages to print, change page size and orientation, and print multiple pages to a single sheet of paper. You will even be able to preview the page to make sure it looks the way you want it to before sending it to the printer.
App UseThe first thing you will need to do in order to print from Printer Pro is add a device. If you have an AirPrint compatible or Wi-Fi printer in your house, it will automatically show up in the list of printers to connect to Printer Pro. If you only have a USB connected printer, you can still use this app with the help of a companion app that you can install on your Mac or PC. The free Printer Pro Desktop add-on allows users to print from a USB printer that is connected to a Mac or PC. Once you have connected a printer to your iOS device through the Printer Pro app, you are ready to go.
Adding a document to Printer Pro is as simple as tapping a button. No matter what app you are using, if there is a way to share a document or web page, you’ll be able to print it. To begin, go to the document you would like to print and then tap the icon that represents the Share feature. It looks like a box with an arrow pointing into it from above. Then, tap “Open In” to access a variety of apps that you will be able to save the document to. Scroll to Printer Pro and tap the icon. It will automatically be sent to the app where you can print immediately by tapping the “Print” button in the bottom right corner. Or, you can make adjustments to how you want to print the document by tapping the “Options” button in the upper right corner.
Print options include the ability to switch between landscape and portrait mode, toggle the auto rotation feature on, and choose the paper size from 3.5 x 5 all the way up to 11.7 x 16.5 inches. Scale the document to its original size or adjust it to fit the page or fill the page. Select the number of pages to print on a single sheet of paper between one and 16 pages. You can also print multiple copies of one document at a time.
To print a specific page, tap the “Print all pages” bar and type in the page numbers that you want to print.
To add an email, or webpage to Printer Pro, copy the text and then open the app and tap the “Clipboard” tab. For example, if you want to print an email from someone, tap and hold your finger on the email until the options appear. Then, drag the blue markers to cover the section of the email that you want to print and tap “Copy.” Open Printer Pro and select Clipboard and the email will automatically be ready to print.
The same goes for web pages. Copy the URL link and when you open Clipboard, it will be ready for you to print.
To print an attachment or image from an email, tap and hold the included document until the Open In feature appears. Tap Open in Printer Pro and the document will automatically be ready to be printed.
You can open documents from Dropbox, Pages, and any other app that includes an Open In feature by selecting Printer Pro from the list of apps to open the document in. All documents will be saved in the app’s “Choose Document” section until you want to delete them.
You can also print images and contacts directly from within the app. Select the Contacts tab to see a list of all of your iOS contacts. You can select multiple contacts and print them all on a single sheet. Select the Photos tab to select an image from your camera roll or shared photo stream. You can also take a picture from within the app to print
The GoodThis app is unbelievably easy to use. You can print just about anything without needing to rename a document. You don’t even have to have an AirPrint compatible printer in order to print directly from your iPhone or iPad.
The BadThe only thing that could possibly be considered a negative for this app is the price. While $4.99 ($6.99 for the iPad version) is a very reasonable price for an app of this capability, the fact that it is not universal makes it a little overpriced. If you want to be able to print from your iPhone and iPad both, it will cost you about $12.
ValuePrinter Pro costs $4.99 for the iPhone and $6.99 for the iPad. As I mentioned above, the price is very reasonable for individual devices, but is a bit overpriced if you want to be able to use it from both. It would be better if the app were universally available for $6.99 total instead. If you have both an iPhone and iPad, I recommend downloading it for the iPad because it just looks better on the larger screen. You can then download DeskConnect and send documents to your iPad from any device and print it from Printer Pro.
ConclusionThis is an amazing app that gives you more control over printing options than any other printer app. It is worth downloading just to be able to print multiple pages on one sheet of paper. Plus, you can adjust the size, select the page to print, and even print to a USB printer from your iPhone. Even if you have an AirPrint printer, it is worth buying for the print options. Download it for the iPhone or iPad in the App Store today.
